Towards a control-theoretic trivialization of ABR video streaming
Abstract: Combining flatness-based control, model-free control and algebraic estimation techniques permits to trivialize several key issues in the adaptive bitrate (ABR) setting, now the dominant industry approach in video streaming: 1) A straightforward open-loop strategy for the bitrate and the buffer level; 2) closing the loop permits not only to take into account unavoidable mismatches and disturbances,… ▽ More

Active queue management for alleviating Internet congestion via a nonlinear differential equation with a variable delay
Abstract: Active Queue Management (AQM) for mitigating Internet congestion has been addressed via various feedback control syntheses, especially P, PI, and PID regulators, by using a linear approximation where the ``round trip time'', i.e., the delay, is assumed to be constant. This constraint is lifted here by using a nonlinear modeling with a variable delay, introduced more than 20 years ago. This delay,… ▽ More

Active queue management: First steps toward a new control-theoretic viewpoint
Abstract: Active Queue Management (AQM) for mitigating Internet congestion has been addressed via various feedback control syntheses, among which P, PI, and PID regulators are quite popular and often associated to a Smith predictor. Here, to better account for the many uncertainties, like the round trip time or the number of TCP sessions, the above controllers are replaced by an intelligent proportional con… ▽ More

Data mining and time series segmentation via extrema: preliminary investigations
Abstract: Time series segmentation is one of the many data mining tools. This paper, in French, takes local extrema as perceptually interesting points (PIPs). The blurring of those PIPs by the quick fluctuations around any time series is treated via an additive decomposition theorem, due to Cartier and Perrin, and algebraic estimation techniques, which are already useful in automatic control and signal proc… ▽ More

Machine learning and control engineering: The model-free case
Abstract: This paper states that Model-Free Control (MFC), which must not be confused with Model-Free Reinforcement Learning, is a new tool for Machine Learning (ML). MFC is easy to implement and should be substituted in control engineering to ML via Artificial Neural Networks and/or Reinforcement Learning. A laboratory experiment, which was already investigated via today's ML techniques, is reported in ord… ▽ More

Model-Free Control as a Service in the Industrial Internet of Things: Packet loss and latency issues via preliminary experiments
Abstract: Model-Free Control (MFC), which is easy to implement both from software and hardware viewpoints, permits the introduction of a high level control synthesis for the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and the Industry 4.0. The choice of the User Diagram Protocol (UDP) as the Internet Protocol permits to neglect the latency. In spite of most severe packet losses, convincing computer simulations and… ▽ More

Easily implementable time series forecasting techniques for resource provisioning in cloud computing
Abstract: Workload predictions in cloud computing is obviously an important topic. Most of the existing publications employ various time series techniques, that might be difficult to implement. We suggest here another route, which has already been successfully used in financial engineering and photovoltaic energy. No mathematical modeling and machine learning procedures are needed. Our computer simulations… ▽ More

Improving resource elasticity in cloud computing thanks to model-free control
Abstract: In cloud computing management, the dynamic adaptation of computing resource allocations under time-varying workload is an active domain of investigation. Several control strategies were already proposed. Here the model-free control setting and the corresponding "intelligent" controllers, which are most successful in many concrete engineering situations, are employed for the "horizontal elasticity.… ▽ More

La production de nitrites lors de la dénitrification des eaux usées par biofiltration - Stratégie de contrôle et de réduction des concentrations résiduelles
Abstract: The recent popularity of post-denitrification processes in the greater Paris area wastewater treatment plants has caused a resurgence of the presence of nitrite in the Seine river. Controlling the production of nitrite during the post-denitrification has thus become a major technical issue. Research studies have been led in the MOCOPEE program (www.mocopee.com) to better understand the underlying… ▽ More

Un résultat intrigant en commande sans modèle
Abstract: An elementary mathematical example proves, thanks to the Routh-Hurwitz criterion, a result that is intriguing with respect to today's practical understanding of model-free control, i.e., an "intelligent" proportional controller (iP) may turn to be more difficult to tune than an intelligent proportional-derivative one (iPD). The vast superiority of iPDs when compared to classic PIDs is shown via co… ▽ More

On short-term traffic flow forecasting and its reliability
Abstract: Recent advances in time series, where deterministic and stochastic modelings as well as the storage and analysis of big data are useless, permit a new approach to short-term traffic flow forecasting and to its reliability, i.e., to the traffic volatility. Several convincing computer simulations, which utilize concrete data, are presented and discussed.

Solar energy production: Short-term forecasting and risk management
Abstract: Electricity production via solar energy is tackled via short-term forecasts and risk management. Our main tool is a new setting on time series. It allows the definition of "confidence bands" where the Gaussian assumption, which is not satisfied by our concrete data, may be abandoned. Those bands are quite convenient and easily implementable. Numerous computer simulations are presented.

Is a probabilistic modeling really useful in financial engineering? - A-t-on vraiment besoin d'un modèle probabiliste en ingénierie financière ?
Abstract: A new standpoint on financial time series, without the use of any mathematical model and of probabilistic tools, yields not only a rigorous approach of trends and volatility, but also efficient calculations which were already successfully applied in automatic control and in signal processing. It is based on a theorem due to P. Cartier and Y. Perrin, which was published in 1995. The above results a… ▽ More

Volatility made observable at last
Abstract: The Cartier-Perrin theorem, which was published in 1995 and is expressed in the language of nonstandard analysis, permits, for the first time perhaps, a clear-cut mathematical definition of the volatility of a financial asset.
