Spontaneous Emergence of Computation in Network Cascades
Abstract: Neuronal network computation and computation by avalanche supporting networks are of interest to the fields of physics, computer science (computation theory as well as statistical or machine learning) and neuroscience. Here we show that computation of complex Boolean functions arises spontaneously in threshold networks as a function of connectivity and antagonism (inhibition), computed by logic au… ▽ More

Disentangling high-order mechanisms and high-order behaviours in complex systems
Abstract: Battiston et al. (arXiv:2110.06023) provide a comprehensive overview of how investigations of complex systems should take into account interactions between more than two elements, which can be modelled by hypergraphs and studied via topological data analysis. Following a separate line of enquiry, a broad literature has developed information-theoretic tools to characterize high-order interdependenc… ▽ More

Quantifying High-order Interdependencies via Multivariate Extensions of the Mutual Information
Abstract: This article introduces a model-agnostic approach to study statistical synergy, a form of emergence in which patterns at large scales are not traceable from lower scales. Our framework leverages various multivariate extensions of Shannon's mutual information, and introduces the O-information as a metric capable of characterising synergy- and redundancy-dominated systems. We develop key analytical… ▽ More

Revisiting Interval Graphs for Network Science
Abstract: The vertices of an interval graph represent intervals over a real line where overlap** intervals denote that their corresponding vertices are adjacent. This implies that the vertices are measurable by a metric and there exists a linear structure in the system. The generalization is an embedding of a graph onto a multi-dimensional Euclidean space and it was used by scientists to study the multi-r… ▽ More

Citation Analysis with Mark-and-Recapture
Abstract: Mark-and-Recapture is a methodology from Population Biology to estimate the number of a species without counting every individual. This is done by multiple samplings of the species using traps and discounting the instances that were caught repeated. In this paper we show that this methodology is applicable for citation analysis as it is also not feasible to count all the relevant publications of a… ▽ More

Comparison of Communities Detection Algorithms for Multiplex
Abstract: Multiplex is a set of graphs on the same vertex set, i.e. $\{G(V,E_1),\ldots,G(V,E_m)\}$. It is a generalized graph to model multiple relationships with parallel edges between vertices. This paper is a literature review of existing communities detection algorithms for multiplex and a comparative analysis of them.

Stability of the Centrality of Unions of Networks on the Same Vertex Set
Abstract: Let $G^1(V,E_1)$ and $G^2(V,E_2)$ be two networks on the same vertex set $V$ and consider the union of edges $G(V, E_1 \cup E_2)$. This paper studies the stability of the Degree, Betweenness and Eigenvector Centrality of the resultant network, $G(V, E_1 \cup E_2)$. Specifically assume $v^1_{max}$ and $v^c_{max}$ are the highest centrality vertices of $G^1(V,E_1)$ and $G(V, E_1 \cup E_2)$ respectiv… ▽ More

Quantifying 'causality' in complex systems: Understanding Transfer Entropy
Abstract: 'Causal' direction is of great importance when dealing with complex systems. Often big volumes of data in the form of time series are available and it is important to develop methods that can inform about possible causal connections between the different observables. Here we investigate the ability of the Transfer Entropy measure to identify causal relations embedded in emergent coherent correlati… ▽ More

Edge Union of Networks on the Same Vertex Set
Abstract: Random networks generators like Erdoes-Renyi, Watts-Strogatz and Barabasi-Albert models are used as models to study real-world networks. Let G^1(V,E_1) and G^2(V,E_2) be two such networks on the same vertex set V. This paper studies the degree distribution and cluster coefficient of the resultant networks, G(V, E_1 U E_2).
