Enhancing Federated Learning with spectrum allocation optimization and device selection

Federated Learning (FL), which is a promising approach to implement machine learning while addressing data privacy concerns, typically involves a large number of wireless mobile devices to collect model training data. Under such circumstances, FL is expected to meet stringent training latency requirements in the face of limited resources such as demand for wireless bandwidth, power consumption, and computation constraints of participating devices. Due to practical considerations, FL selects a portion of devices to participate in the model training process at each iteration. Therefore, the tasks of efficient resource management and device selection will have a significant impact on the practical uses of FL. In this paper, we propose a spectrum allocation optimization mechanism for enhancing FL over a wireless mobile network. Specifically, the proposed spectrum allocation optimization mechanism minimizes the time delay of FL while considering the energy consumption of individual participating devices; thus ensuring that all the participating devices have sufficient resources to train their local models. In this connection, to ensure fast convergence of FL, a robust device selection is also proposed to help FL reach convergence swiftly, especially when the local datasets of the devices are not independent and identically distributed (non-iid). Experimental results show that (1) the proposed spectrum allocation optimization method optimizes time delay while satisfying the individual energy constraints; (2) the proposed device selection method enables FL to achieve the fastest convergence on non-iid datasets. △ Less

Optimizing Semi-Stream CACHEJOIN for Near-Real-Time Data Warehousing

For this purpose, an adaptive semi-stream join algorithm called CACHEJOIN (Cache Join) focusing non-uniform stream data is provided in the literature. However, this algorithm cannot exploit the memory and CPU resources optimally and consequently it leaves its service rate suboptimal due to sequential execution of both of its phases, called stream-probing (SP) phase and disk-probing (DP) phase. By integrating the advantages of CACHEJOIN, in this paper we present two modifications in it. First is called P-CACHEJOIN (Parallel Cache Join) that enables the parallel processing of two phases in CACHEJOIN. This increases number of joined stream records and therefore improves throughput considerably. Second is called OP-CACHEJOIN (Optimized Parallel Cache Join) that implements a parallel loading of stored data into memory while the DP phase is executing. An Intelligent Data Analysis for Hotel Recommendation Systems using Machine Learning

The Collaborative Filtering (CF) approach is one of the most popular techniques of the RS to generate recommendations. We have proposed a novel CF recommendation approach in which opinion based sentiment analysis is used to achieve hotel feature matrix by polarity identification. Our approach combines lexical analysis, syntax analysis and semantic analysis to understand sentiment towards hotel features and the profiling of guest type (solo, family, couple etc). The proposed system recommends hotels based on the hotel features and guest type as additional information for personalized recommendation. The developed system not only has the ability to handle heterogeneous data using big data Hadoop platform but it also recommend hotel class based on guest type using fuzzy rules. Different experiments are performed over the real world dataset obtained from two hotel websites. Moreover, the values of precision and recall and F-measure have been calculated and results are discussed in terms of improved accuracy and response time, significantly better than the traditional approaches. △ Less

Speeding up SOR Solvers for Constraint-based GUIs with a Warm-Start Strategy

Most GUIs do not have a fixed layout, but are resizable and able to adapt themselves. Constraints are a powerful tool for specifying adaptable GUI layouts: they are used to specify a layout in a general form, and a constraint solver is used to find a satisfying concrete layout, e.g.\ for a specific GUI size. The constraint solver has to calculate a new layout every time a GUI is resized or changed, so it needs to be efficient to ensure a good user experience. One approach for constraint solvers is based on the Gauss-Seidel algorithm and successive over-relaxation (SOR). Our observation is that a solution after resizing or changing is similar in structure to a previous solution. Thus, our hypothesis is that we can increase the computational performance of an SOR-based constraint solver if we reuse the solution of a previous layout to warm-start the solving of a new layout. In this paper we report on experiments to test this hypothesis experimentally for three common use cases: big-step resizing, small-step resizing and constraint change. In our experiments, we measured the solving time for randomly generated GUI layout specifications of various sizes. For all three cases we found that the performance is improved if an existing solution is used as a starting solution for a new layout. △ Less

Constraint Solvers for User Interface Layout

Resizing behavior is very important in GUIs because areas have domain specific parameters such as form the resizing of windows. If linear objective function is used and window is resized then error is not distributed equally. To distribute the error equally, a quadratic objective function is introduced. Different algorithms are widely used for solving linear constraints and quadratic problems in a variety of different scientific areas. The linear relxation, Kaczmarz, direct and linear programming methods are common methods for solving linear constraints for GUI layout. The interior point and active set methods are most commonly used techniques to solve quadratic programming problems. Current constraint solvers designed for GUI layout do not use interior point methods for solving a quadratic objective function subject to linear equality and inequality constraints. In this paper, performance aspects and the convergence speed of interior point and active set methods are compared along with one most commonly used linear programming method when they are implemented for graphical user interface layout. The performance and convergence of the proposed algorithms are evaluated empirically using randomly generated UI layout specifications of various sizes. The results show that the interior point algorithms perform significantly better than the Simplex method and QOCA-solver, which uses the active set method implementation for solving quadratic optimization. △ Less
