Predicting events such as political protests, flu epidemics, and criminal activities is crucial to proactively taking necessary measures and implementing required responses to address emerging challenges. Capturing contextual information from textual data for event forecasting poses significant challenges due to the intricate structure of the documents and the evolving nature of events. Recently, dynamic Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have been introduced to capture the dynamic patterns of input text graphs. However, these models only utilize node-level representation, causing the loss of the global information from graph-level representation. On the other hand, both node-level and graph-level representations are essential for effective event prediction as node-level representation gives insight into the local structure, and the graph-level representation provides an understanding of the global structure of the temporal graph. To address these challenges, in this paper, we propose a Dynamic Graph Contrastive Learning (DyGCL) method for event prediction. Our model DyGCL employs a local view encoder to learn the evolving node representations, which effectively captures the local dynamic structure of input graphs. Additionally, it harnesses a global view encoder to perceive the hierarchical dynamic graph representation of the input graphs. Then we update the graph representations from both encoders using contrastive learning. In the final stage, DyGCL combines both representations using an attention mechanism and optimizes its capability to predict future events. Our extensive experiment demonstrates that our proposed method outperforms the baseline methods for event prediction on six real-world datasets.

Echocardiography (echo) is the first imaging modality used when assessing cardiac function. The measurement of functional biomarkers from echo relies upon the segmentation of cardiac structures and deep learning models have been proposed to automate the segmentation process. However, in order to translate these tools to widespread clinical use it is important that the segmentation models are robust to a wide variety of images (e.g. acquired from different scanners, by operators with different levels of expertise etc.). To achieve this level of robustness it is necessary that the models are trained with multiple diverse datasets. A significant challenge faced when training with multiple diverse datasets is the variation in label presence, i.e. the combined data are often partially-labelled. Adaptations of the cross entropy loss function have been proposed to deal with partially labelled data. In this paper we show that training naively with such a loss function and multiple diverse datasets can lead to a form of shortcut learning, where the model associates label presence with domain characteristics, leading to a drop in performance. To address this problem, we propose a novel label dropout scheme to break the link between domain characteristics and the presence or absence of labels. We demonstrate that label dropout improves echo segmentation Dice score by 62% and 25% on two cardiac structures when training using multiple diverse partially labelled datasets.

Understanding crack propagation in structures subjected to fluid loads is crucial in various engineering applications, ranging from underwater pipelines to aircraft components. This study investigates the dynamic response of structures, including their damage and fracture behaviour under hydrodynamic load, emphasizing the fluid-structure interaction (FSI) phenomena by applying Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH). The developed framework employs weakly compressible SPH (WCSPH) to model the fluid flow and a pseudo-spring-based SPH solver for modelling the structural response. For improved accuracy in FSI modelling, the $δ$-SPH technique is implemented to enhance pressure calculations within the fluid phase. The pseudo-spring analogy is employed for modelling material damage, where particle interactions are confined to their immediate neighbours. These particles are linked by springs, which don't contribute to system stiffness but determine the interaction strength between connected pairs. It is assumed that a crack propagates through a spring connecting a particle pair when the damage indicator of that spring exceeds a predefined threshold. The developed framework is extensively validated through a dam break case, oscillation of a deformable solid beam, dam break through a deformable elastic solid, and breaking dam impact on a deformable solid obstacle. Numerical outcomes are subsequently compared with the findings from existing literature. The ability of the framework to accurately depict material damage and fracture is showcased through a simulation of water impact on a deformable solid obstacle with an initial notch.

Persistent homology is a mathematical tool used for studying the shape of data by extracting its topological features. It has gained popularity in network science due to its applicability in various network mining problems, including clustering, graph classification, and graph neural networks. The definition of persistent homology for graphs is relatively straightforward, as graphs possess distinct intrinsic distances and a simplicial complex structure. However, hypergraphs present a challenge in preserving topological information since they may not have a simplicial complex structure. In this paper, we define several topological characterizations of hypergraphs in defining hypergraph persistent homology to prioritize different higher-order structures within hypergraphs. We further use these persistent homology filtrations in classifying four different real-world hypergraphs and compare their performance to the state-of-the-art graph neural network models. Experimental results demonstrate that persistent homology filtrations are effective in classifying hypergraphs and outperform the baseline models. To the best of our knowledge, this study represents the first systematic attempt to tackle the hypergraph classification problem using persistent homology.

However, the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources can make it challenging to manage the power grid and ensure a stable supply of electricity, which is crucial for achieving SDG 9. In this paper, we propose a deep learning-based approach for predicting energy demand in a smart power grid, which can improve the integration of renewable energy sources by providing accurate predictions of energy demand. Our approach aligns with SDG 13 on climate action, enabling more efficient management of renewable energy resources. We use long short-term memory networks, well-suited for time series data, to capture complex patterns and dependencies in energy demand data. The proposed approach is evaluated using four historical short-term energy demand data datasets from different energy distribution companies, including American Electric Power, Commonwealth Edison, Dayton Power and Light, and Pennsylvania-New Jersey-Maryland Interconnection. The proposed model is also compared with three other state-of-the-art forecasting algorithms: Facebook Prophet, Support Vector Regression, and Random Forest Regression. The experimental results show that the proposed REDf model can accurately predict energy demand with a mean absolute error of 1.4%, indicating its potential to enhance the stability and efficiency of the power grid and contribute to achieving SDGs 7, 9, and 13. The proposed model also has the potential to manage the integration of renewable energy sources in an effective manner.

Graph Neural networks (GNNs) have recently become a powerful technique for many graph-related tasks including graph classification. Current GNN models apply different graph pooling methods that reduce the number of nodes and edges to learn the higher-order structure of the graph in a hierarchical way. All these methods primarily rely on the one-hop neighborhood. However, they do not consider the higher- order structure of the graph. In this work, we propose a multi-channel Motif-based Graph Pooling method named (MPool) captures the higher-order graph structure with motif and local and global graph structure with a combination of selection and clustering-based pooling operations. As the first channel, we develop node selection-based graph pooling by designing a node ranking model considering the motif adjacency of nodes. As the second channel, we develop cluster-based graph pooling by designing a spectral clustering model using motif adjacency. As the final layer, the result of each channel is aggregated into the final graph representation. We perform extensive experiments on eight benchmark datasets and show that our proposed method shows better accuracy than the baseline methods for graph classification tasks.

Sequence classification has a wide range of real-world applications in different domains, such as genome classification in health and anomaly detection in business. However, the lack of explicit features in sequence data makes it difficult for machine learning models. While Neural Network (NN) models address this with learning features automatically, they are limited to capturing adjacent structural connections and ignore global, higher-order information between the sequences. To address these challenges in the sequence classification problems, we propose a novel Hypergraph Attention Network model, namely Seq-HyGAN. To capture the complex structural similarity between sequence data, we first create a hypergraph where the sequences are depicted as hyperedges and subsequences extracted from sequences are depicted as nodes. Additionally, we introduce an attention-based Hypergraph Neural Network model that utilizes a two-level attention mechanism. This model generates a sequence representation as a hyperedge while simultaneously learning the crucial subsequences for each sequence. We conduct extensive experiments on four data sets to assess and compare our model with several state-of-the-art methods. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed Seq-HyGAN model can effectively classify sequence data and significantly outperform the baselines. We also conduct case studies to investigate the contribution of each module in Seq-HyGAN.

Substance abuse is the unrestrained and detrimental use of psychoactive chemical substances, unauthorized drugs, and alcohol. Continuous use of these substances can ultimately lead a human to disastrous consequences. As patients display a high rate of relapse, prevention at an early stage can be an effective restraint. We therefore propose a binary classifier to identify any individual's present vulnerability towards substance abuse by analyzing subjects' socio-economic environment. We have collected data by a questionnaire which is created after carefully assessing the commonly involved factors behind substance abuse. Pearson's chi-squared test of independence is used to identify key feature variables influencing substance abuse. Later we build the predictive classifiers using machine learning classification algorithms on those variables. Logistic regression classifier trained with 18 features can predict individual vulnerability with the best accuracy.

The lack of standard labeled datasets in the Bengali domain makes the task of SA even harder. In this paper, we present manually tagged 2-class and 3-class SA datasets in Bengali. We also demonstrate that the multi-lingual BERT model with relevant extensions can be trained via the approach of transfer learning over those novel datasets to improve the state-of-the-art performance in sentiment classification tasks. This deep learning model achieves an accuracy of 71\% for 2-class sentiment classification compared to the current state-of-the-art accuracy of 68\%. We also present the very first Bengali SA classifier for the 3-class manually tagged dataset, and our proposed model achieves an accuracy of 60\%. We further use this model to analyze the sentiment of public comments in the online daily newspaper. Our analysis shows that people post negative comments for political or sports news more often, while the religious article comments represent positive sentiment. Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a pandemic disease, which has already caused thousands of causalities and infected several millions of people worldwide. Any technological tool enabling rapid screening of the COVID-19 infection with high accuracy can be crucially helpful to healthcare professionals. The main clinical tool currently in use for the diagnosis of COVID-19 is the Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), which is expensive, less-sensitive and requires specialized medical personnel. X-ray imaging is an easily accessible tool that can be an excellent alternative in the COVID-19 diagnosis. This research was taken to investigate the utility of artificial intelligence (AI) in the rapid and accurate detection of COVID-19 from chest X-ray images. The aim of this paper is to propose a robust technique for automatic detection of COVID-19 pneumonia from digital chest X-ray images applying pre-trained deep-learning algorithms while maximizing the detection accuracy. A public database was created by the authors combining several public databases and also by collecting images from recently published articles. The database contains a mixture of 423 COVID-19, 1485 viral pneumonia, and 1579 normal chest X-ray images. Transfer learning technique was used with the help of image augmentation to train and validate several pre-trained deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). The networks were trained to classify two different schemes: i) normal and COVID-19 pneumonia; ii) normal, viral and COVID-19 pneumonia with and without image augmentation. In medical science, the use of computer science in disease detection and diagnosis is gaining popularity. Previously, the detection of disease used to take a significant amount of time and was less reliable. Machine learning (ML) techniques employed in recent biomedical researches are making revolutionary changes by gaining higher accuracy with more concise timing. At present, it is even possible to automatically detect diseases from the scanned images with the help of ML. In this research, we have taken such an attempt to detect retinal diseases from optical coherence tomography (OCT) X-ray images. Here, we propose a deep learning (DL) based approach in detecting retinal diseases from OCT images which can identify three conditions of the retina. Four different models used in this approach are compared with each other. On the test set, the detection accuracy is 98.00\% for a vanilla convolutional neural network (CNN) model, 99.07\% for Xception model, 97.00\% for ResNet50 model, and 99.17\% for MobileNetV2 model. The MobileNetV2 model acquires the highest accuracy, and the closest to the highest is the Xception model. The proposed approach has a potential impact on creating a tool for automatically detecting retinal diseases.

Conventional smoothed particle hydrodynamics based on Eulerian kernels (CESPH) is widely-used in large deformation analysis in geomaterials. Despite being popular, it suffers from tensile instability and rank-deficiency; thus, it needs several numerical treatments to be stable. In this work, we present a stabilized total-Lagrangian SPH method (TLSPH), which is inherently free of tensile instability. A stiffness-based hourglass control algorithm is employed to cure the hourglass mode caused by rank-deficiency. Periodic update of reference configuration is used in simulations to allow TLSPH to model large deformation and post-failure flow in geomaterials. Several numerical examples are presented to show the performance of the stabilized TLSPH method. The comparison between TLSPH and CESPH are discussed. The influences of hourglass control and configuration update are also discussed and shown in the numerical examples. It is found that the presented stabilized TLSPH is robust and can model large deformation and plastic flows in geomaterials. Particularly, the stabilized TLSPH delivers accurate and smooth stress results.

In this paper crack initiation, propagation and branching phenomena are simulated using the Pseudo-Spring Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) in two and three-dimensional domains. The pseudo-spring analogy is used to model material damage. Here, the interaction of particles is limited to its initial immediate neighbours. The particles are connected via springs. These springs do not provide any extra stiffness in the system but only define the level of interaction between the connecting pairs. It is assumed that a crack has passed through a spring connecting a particle pair if the damage indicator of that spring becomes more than a predefined value. The crack branching of a pre-notched plate under dynamic loading and the effect of loading amplitude are studied here. The computed crack speeds, crack paths and surfaces are compared with experimental and numerical results available in the literature and are found to be in good agreement. The effect of notch location for a plate with a circular hole is studied here. The ability of the framework to model arbitrary crack paths and surfaces are demonstrated via three-dimensional simulations of chalk under torsion, Kalthoff-Winkler experiment and Taylor bullet impact.

This paper presents numerical simulations of metal machining processes with Eulerian and Total Lagrangian Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH). Being a mesh-free method, SPH can conveniently handle large deformation and material separation. However, the Eulerian SPH (ESPH) in which the kernel functions are computed based on the current particle positions suffers from the tensile instability. The Total Lagrangian SPH (TLSPH) is free of this instability as the kernel functions are calculated in the reference configurations. In this work, the metals are modelled using the Johnson-Cook constitutive model, which can capture strain hardening and thermal softening in metals. The processing/cutting tools are modelled as rigid bodies, while the metal-tool contact forces are considered using the standard SPH interaction and the particle-particle pinball contact in ESPH and TLSPH, respectively. The two methods are employed to model several cases with impact, pressing, and cutting; the results are compared with reference experimental and numerical results. It is found that both the two SPH methods can capture the salient phenomena in metal processing, e.g. strain localisation, large deformation, and material separation. However, the TLSPH approach provides a better simulation of strain localisation and chip morphology. This work shows that the TLSPH method has the potential to model the metal machining processes efficiently without any numerical instabilities.

An algorithm is proposed to model crack initiation and propagation within the total Lagrangian Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (TLSPH) framework. TLSPH avoids the two main deficiencies of conventional SPH, i.e., tensile instability and inconsistency, by making use of the Lagrangian kernel and gradient correction, respectively. In the present approach, the support domain of a particle is modified, where it only interacts with its immediately neighbouring particles. A virtual link defines the level of interaction between each particle pair. The state of the virtual link is determined by damage law or cracking criterion. The virtual link approach allows easy and natural modelling of cracking surfaces without explicit cracking treatments such as particle splitting, field enrichment or visibility criterion. The performance of the proposed approach is demonstrated via a few numerical examples of both brittle and ductile failure under impact loading.
