In this era of exoplanet characterisation with JWST, the need for a fast implementation of classical forward models to understand the chemical and physical processes in exoplanet atmospheres is more important than ever. Notably, the time-dependent ordinary differential equations to be solved by chemical kinetics codes are very time-consuming to compute. In this study, we focus on the implementation of neural networks to replace mathematical frameworks in one-dimensional chemical kinetics codes. Using the gravity profile, temperature-pressure profiles, initial mixing ratios, and stellar flux of a sample of hot-Jupiters atmospheres as free parameters, the neural network is built to predict the mixing ratio outputs in steady state. The architecture of the network is composed of individual autoencoders for each input variable to reduce the input dimensionality, which is then used as the input training data for an LSTM-like neural network. Results show that the autoencoders for the mixing ratios, stellar spectra, and pressure profiles are exceedingly successful in encoding and decoding the data. Our results show that in 90% of the cases, the fully trained model is able to predict the evolved mixing ratios of the species in the hot-Jupiter atmosphere simulations. The fully trained model is ~1000 times faster than the simulations done with the forward, chemical kinetics model while making accurate predictions.

We present a framework for web-scale archiving of the dark web. While commonly associated with illicit and illegal activity, the dark web provides a way to privately access web information. This is a valuable and socially beneficial tool to global citizens, such as those wishing to access information while under oppressive political regimes that work to limit information availability. However, little institutional archiving is performed on the dark web (limited to the Archive.is dark web presence, a page-at-a-time archiver). We use surface web tools, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) and adapt them for archiving the dark web. We demonstrate the viability of our framework in a proof-of-concept and narrowly scoped prototype, implemented with the following lightly adapted open source tools: the Brozzler crawler for capture, WARC file for storage, and pywb for replay. Using these tools, we demonstrate the viability of modified surface web archiving TTPs for archiving the dark web.

As digital games continue to be explored as solutions to educational and behavioural challenges, the need for evaluation methodologies which support both the unique nature of the format and the need for comparison with other approaches continues to increase. In this workshop paper, a range of challenges are described related specifically to the case of cultural learning using digital games, in terms of how it may best be assessed, understood, and sustained through an iterative process supported by research. An evaluation framework is proposed, identifying metrics for reach and impact and their associated challenges, as well as presenting ethical considerations and the means to utilize evaluation outcomes within an iterative cycle, and to provide feedback to learners. Presenting as a case study a serious game from the Mobile Assistance for Social Inclusion and Empowerment of Immigrants with Persuasive Learning Technologies and Social Networks (MASELTOV) project, the use of the framework in the context of an integrative project is discussed, with emphasis on the need to view game-based learning as a blended component of the cultural learning process, rather than a standalone solution. The particular case of mobile gaming is also considered within this case study, providing a platform by which to deliver and update content in response to evaluation outcomes. Discussion reflects upon the general challenges related to the assessment of cultural learning, and behavioural change in more general terms, suggesting future work should address the need to provide sustainable, research-driven platforms for game-based learning content.
