A surgeon's physiological hand tremor can significantly impact the outcome of delicate and precise retinal surgery, such as retinal vein cannulation (RVC) and epiretinal membrane peeling. Robot-assisted eye surgery technology provides ophthalmologists with advanced capabilities such as hand tremor cancellation, hand motion scaling, and safety constraints that enable them to perform these otherwise challenging and high-risk surgeries with high precision and safety. Steady-Hand Eye Robot (SHER) with cooperative control mode can filter out surgeon's hand tremor, yet another important safety feature, that is, minimizing the contact force between the surgical instrument and sclera surface for avoiding tissue damage cannot be met in this control mode. Also, other capabilities, such as hand motion scaling and haptic feedback, require a teleoperation control framework. In this work, for the first time, we implemented a teleoperation control mode incorporated with an adaptive sclera force control algorithm using a PHANTOM Omni haptic device and a force-sensing surgical instrument equipped with Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors attached to the SHER 2.1 end-effector. This adaptive sclera force control algorithm allows the robot to dynamically minimize the tool-sclera contact force. Moreover, for the first time, we compared the performance of the proposed adaptive teleoperation mode with the cooperative mode by conducting a vessel-following experiment inside an eye phantom under a microscope.

Images captured in dusty environments suffering from poor visibility and quality. Enhancement of these images such as sand dust images plays a critical role in various atmospheric optics applications. In this work, proposed a new model based on Color Correction and new membership function to enhance san dust images. The proposed model consists of three phases: correction of color shift, removal of haze, and enhancement of contrast and brightness. The color shift is corrected using a new membership function to adjust the values of U and V in the YUV color space. The Adaptive Dark Channel Prior (A-DCP) is used for haze removal. The stretching contrast and improving image brightness are based on Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE). The proposed model tests and evaluates through many real sand dust images. The experimental results show that the proposed solution is outperformed the current studies in terms of effectively removing the red and yellow cast and provides high quality and quantity dust images.

The combination of artificial intelligence and extended reality (AI-XR) technologies has the potential to create a surgical metaverse, a virtual environment where surgeries can be planned and performed. This paper aims to provide insight into the various potential applications of an AI-XR surgical metaverse and the challenges that must be addressed to bring its full potential to fruition. It is important for the community to focus on these challenges to fully realize the potential of the AI-XR surgical metaverses. Furthermore, to emphasize the need for secure and robust AI-XR surgical metaverses and to demonstrate the real-world implications of security threats to the AI-XR surgical metaverses, we present a case study in which the ``an immersive surgical attack'' on incision point localization is performed in the context of preoperative planning in a surgical metaverse.

Retinal microsurgery is a high-precision surgery performed on an exceedingly delicate tissue. It now requires extensively trained and highly skilled surgeons. Given the restricted range of instrument motion in the confined intraocular space, and also potentially restricting instrument contact with the sclera, snake-like robots may prove to be a promising technology to provide surgeons with greater flexibility, dexterity, space access, and positioning accuracy during retinal procedures requiring high precision and advantageous tooltip approach angles, such as retinal vein cannulation and epiretinal membrane peeling. Kinematics modeling of these robots is an essential step toward accurate position control, however, as opposed to conventional manipulators, modeling of these robots does not follow a straightforward method due to their complex mechanical structure and actuation mechanisms. Especially, in wire-driven snake-like robots, the hysteresis problem due to the wire tension condition can have a significant impact on the positioning accuracy of these robots. In this paper, we proposed an experimental kinematics model with a hysteresis compensation algorithm using the probabilistic Gaussian mixture models (GMM) Gaussian mixture regression (GMR) approach. Experimental results on the two-degree-of-freedom (DOF) integrated robotic intraocular snake (I2RIS) show that the proposed model provides 0.4 deg accuracy, which is an overall 60% and 70% of improvement for yaw and pitch degrees of freedom, respectively, compared to a previous model of this robot.

Software-Defined Networking (SDN) is the next generation to change the architecture of traditional networks. SDN is one of the promising solutions to change the architecture of internet networks. Attacks become more common due to the centralized nature of SDN architecture. It is vital to provide security for the SDN. In this study, we propose a Network Intrusion Detection System-Deep Learning module (NIDS-DL) approach in the context of SDN. Our suggested method combines Network Intrusion Detection Systems (NIDS) with many types of deep learning algorithms. Our approach employs 12 features extracted from 41 features in the NSL-KDD dataset using a feature selection method. We employed classifiers (CNN, DNN, RNN, LSTM, and GRU). When we compare classifier scores, our technique produced accuracy results of (98.63%, 98.53%, 98.13%, 98.04%, and 97.78%) respectively. The novelty of our new approach (NIDS-DL) uses 5 deep learning classifiers and made pre-processing dataset to harvests the best results. Our proposed approach was successful in binary classification and detecting attacks, implying that our approach (NIDS-DL) might be used with great efficiency in the future.

Developers frequently use APIs to implement certain functionalities, such as parsing Excel Files, reading and writing text files line by line, etc. Developers can greatly benefit from automatic API usage sequence generation based on natural language queries for building applications in a faster and cleaner manner. Existing approaches utilize information retrieval models to search for matching API sequences given a query or use RNN-based encoder-decoder to generate API sequences. As it stands, the first approach treats queries and API names as bags of words. It lacks deep comprehension of the semantics of the queries. The latter approach adapts a neural language model to encode a user query into a fixed-length context vector and generate API sequences from the context vector.
We want to understand the effectiveness of recent Pre-trained Transformer based Models (PTMs) for the API learning task. These PTMs are trained on large natural language corpora in an unsupervised manner to retain contextual knowledge about the language and have found success in solving similar Natural Language Processing (NLP) problems. However, the applicability of PTMs has not yet been explored for the API sequence generation task. We use a dataset that contains 7 million annotations collected from GitHub to evaluate the PTMs empirically. This dataset was also used to assess previous approaches. Based on our results, PTMs generate more accurate API sequences and outperform other related methods by around 11%. We have also identified two different tokenization approaches that can contribute to a significant boost in PTMs' performance for the API sequence generation task.

Collecting API examples, usages, and mentions relevant to a specific API method over discussions on venues such as Stack Overflow is not a trivial problem. It requires efforts to correctly recognize whether the discussion refers to the API method that developers/tools are searching for. The content of the thread, which consists of both text paragraphs describing the involvement of the API method in the discussion and the code snippets containing the API invocation, may refer to the given API method. Leveraging this observation, we develop FACOS, a context-specific algorithm to capture the semantic and syntactic information of the paragraphs and code snippets in a discussion. FACOS combines a syntactic word-based score with a score from a predictive model fine-tuned from CodeBERT. FACOS beats the state-of-the-art approach by 13.9% in terms of F1-score.

The BraTS 2021 challenge celebrates its 10th anniversary and is jointly organized by the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), the American Society of Neuroradiology (ASNR), and the Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Interventions (MICCAI) society. Since its inception, BraTS has been focusing on being a common benchmarking venue for brain glioma segmentation algorithms, with well-curated multi-institutional multi-parametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) data. Gliomas are the most common primary malignancies of the central nervous system, with varying degrees of aggressiveness and prognosis. The RSNA-ASNR-MICCAI BraTS 2021 challenge targets the evaluation of computational algorithms assessing the same tumor compartmentalization, as well as the underlying tumor's molecular characterization, in pre-operative baseline mpMRI data from 2,040 patients. Specifically, the two tasks that BraTS 2021 focuses on are: a) the segmentation of the histologically distinct brain tumor sub-regions, and b) the classification of the tumor's O[6]-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) promoter methylation status. The performance evaluation of all participating algorithms in BraTS 2021 will be conducted through the Sage Bionetworks Synapse platform (Task 1) and Kaggle (Task 2), concluding in distributing to the top ranked participants monetary awards of $60,000 collectively.

Context: Mobile app reviews written by users on app stores or social media are significant resources for app developers.Analyzing app reviews have proved to be useful for many areas of software engineering (e.g., requirement engineering, testing). Automatic classification of app reviews requires extensive efforts to manually curate a labeled dataset. When the classification purpose changes (e.g. identifying bugs versus usability issues or sentiment), new datasets should be labeled, which prevents the extensibility of the developed models for new desired classes/tasks in practice. Recent pre-trained neural language models (PTM) are trained on large corpora in an unsupervised manner and have found success in solving similar Natural Language Processing problems. However, the applicability of PTMs is not explored for app review classification Objective: We investigate the benefits of PTMs for app review classification compared to the existing models, as well as the transferability of PTMs in multiple settings. Method: We empirically study the accuracy and time efficiency of PTMs compared to prior approaches using six datasets from literature. In addition, we investigate the performance of the PTMs trained on app reviews (i.e. domain-specific PTMs) . We set up different studies to evaluate PTMs in multiple settings: binary vs. multi-class classification, zero-shot classification (when new labels are introduced to the model), multi-task setting, and classification of reviews from different resources. The datasets are manually labeled app review datasets from Google Play Store, Apple App Store, and Twitter data. In all cases, Micro and Macro Precision, Recall, and F1-scores will be used and we will report the time required for training and prediction with the models.

Analysis of mobile app reviews has shown its important role in requirement engineering, software maintenance and evolution of mobile apps. Mobile app developers check their users' reviews frequently to clarify the issues experienced by users or capture the new issues that are introduced due to a recent app update. App reviews have a dynamic nature and their discussed topics change over time. The changes in the topics among collected reviews for different versions of an app can reveal important issues about the app update. A main technique in this analysis is using topic modeling algorithms. However, app reviews are short texts and it is challenging to unveil their latent topics over time. Conventional topic models suffer from the sparsity of word co-occurrence patterns while inferring topics for short texts. Furthermore, these algorithms cannot capture topics over numerous consecutive time-slices. Online topic modeling algorithms speed up the inference of topic models for the texts collected in the latest time-slice by saving a fraction of data from the previous time-slice. But these algorithms do not analyze the statistical-data of all the previous time-slices, which can confer contributions to the topic distribution of the current time-slice.
We propose Adaptive Online Biterm Topic Model (AOBTM) to model topics in short texts adaptively. AOBTM alleviates the sparsity problem in short-texts and considers the statistical-data for an optimal number of previous time-slices. We also propose parallel algorithms to automatically determine the optimal number of topics and the best number of previous versions that should be considered in topic inference phase. Automatic evaluation on collections of app reviews and real-world short text datasets confirm that AOBTM can find more coherent topics and outperforms the state-of-the-art baselines.

Improving the energy efficiency of mobile applications is a topic that has gained a lot of attention recently. It has been addressed in a number of ways such as identifying energy bugs and develo** a catalog of energy patterns. Previous work shows that users discuss the battery-related issues (energy inefficiency or energy consumption) of the apps in their reviews. However, there is no work that addresses the automatic extraction of battery-related issues from users' feedback. In this paper, we report on a visualization tool that is developed to empirically study machine learning algorithms and text features to automatically identify the energy consumption specific reviews with the highest accuracy. Other than the common machine learning algorithms, we utilize deep learning models with different word embeddings to compare the results. Furthermore, to help the developers extract the main topics that are discussed in the reviews, two states of the art topic modeling algorithms are applied. The visualizations of the topics represent the keywords that are extracted for each topic along with a comparison with the results of string matching. The developed web-browser based interactive visualization tool is a novel framework developed with the intention of giving the app developers insights about running time and accuracy of machine learning and deep learning models as well as extracted topics. The tool makes it easier for the developers to traverse through the extensive result set generated by the text classification and topic modeling algorithms. The dynamic-data structure used for the tool stores the baseline-results of the discussed approaches and is updated when applied on new datasets. The tool is open-sourced to replicate the research results.

All over the world, numerous organizations maintain a considerable number of open databases containing a lot of facts and numbers. However, most of them do not offer a concise and insightful data interpretation or visualization tool, which can help users to process all of the information in a consistently comparable way. Canadian Federal and Provincial Elections is an example of these databases. This information exists in numerous websites, as separate tables so that the user needs to traverse through a tree structure of scattered information on the site, and the user is left with the comparison, without providing proper tools, data-interpretation or visualizations. In this paper, we provide technical details of addressing this problem, by using the Canadian Elections data (since 1867) as a specific case study as it has numerous technical challenges. We hope that the methodology used here can help in develo** similar tools to achieve some of the goals of publicly available datasets. Having a cognitive and self-optimizing network that proactively adapts not only to channel conditions, but also according to its users needs can be one of the highest forthcoming priorities of future 6G Heterogeneous Networks (HetNets). In this paper, we introduce an interdisciplinary approach linking the concepts of e-healthcare, priority, big data analytics (BDA) and radio resource optimization in a multi-tier 5G network. We employ three machine learning (ML) algorithms, namely, naive Bayesian (NB) classifier, logistic regression (LR), and decision tree (DT), working as an ensemble system to analyze historical medical records of stroke out-patients (OPs) and readings from body-attached internet-of-things (IoT) sensors to predict the likelihood of an imminent stroke. We convert the stroke likelihood into a risk factor functioning as a priority in a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) optimization model. Hence, the task is to optimally allocate physical resource blocks (PRBs) to HetNet users while prioritizing OPs by granting them high gain PRBs according to the severity of their medical state. Thus, empowering the OPs to send their critical data to their healthcare provider with minimized delay. To that end, two optimization approaches are proposed, a weighted sum rate maximization (WSRMax) approach and a proportional fairness (PF) approach. The proposed approaches increased the OPs average signal to interference plus noise (SINR) by 57% and 95%, respectively. The WSRMax approach increased the system total SINR to a level higher than that of the PF approach, nevertheless, the PF approach yielded higher SINRs for the OPs, better fairness and a lower margin of error.

In this paper, we introduce machine learning approaches that are used to prioritize outpatients (OP) according to their current health state, resulting in self-optimizing heterogeneous networks (HetNet) that intelligently adapt according to users' needs. We use a naïve Bayesian classifier to analyze data acquired from OPs' medical records, alongside data from medical Internet of Things (IoT) sensors that provide the current state of the OP. We use this machine learning algorithm to calculate the likelihood of a life-threatening medical condition, in this case an imminent stroke. An OP is assigned high-powered resource blocks (RBs) according to the seriousness of their current health state, enabling them to remain connected and send their critical data to the designated medical facility with minimal delay. Using a mixed integer linear programming formulation (MILP), we present two approaches to optimizing the uplink side of a HetNet in terms of user-RB assignment: a Weighted Sum Rate Maximization (WSRMax) approach and a Proportional Fairness (PF) approach. Using these approaches, we illustrate the utility of the proposed system in terms of providing reliable connectivity to medical IoT sensors, enabling the OPs to maintain the quality and speed of their connection. Moreover, we demonstrate how system response can change according to alterations in the OPs' medical conditions.

Big data analytics is one of the state-of-the-art tools to optimize networks and transform them from merely being a blind tube that conveys data, into a cognitive, conscious, and self-optimizing entity that can intelligently adapt according to the needs of its users. This, in fact, can be regarded as one of the highest forthcoming priorities of future networks. In this paper, we propose a system for Out-Patient (OP) centric Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) network optimization. Big data harvested from the OPs' medical records, along with current readings from their body sensors are processed and analyzed to predict the likelihood of a life-threatening medical condition, for instance, an imminent stroke. This prediction is used to ensure that the OP is assigned an optimal LTE-A Physical Resource Blocks (PRBs) to transmit their critical data to their healthcare provider with minimal delay. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time big data analytics are utilized to optimize a cellular network in an OP-conscious manner. The PRBs assignment is optimized using Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) and a real-time heuristic. Two approaches are proposed, the Weighted Sum Rate Maximization (WSRMax) approach and the Proportional Fairness (PF) approach. The approaches increased the OPs' average SINR by 26.6% and 40.5%, respectively. The WSRMax approach increased the system's total SINR to a level higher than that of the PF approach, however, the PF approach reported higher SINRs for the OPs, better fairness and a lower margin of error.

Currently, the world is witnessing a mounting avalanche of data due to the increasing number of mobile network subscribers, Internet websites, and online services. This trend is continuing to develop in a quick and diverse manner in the form of big data. Big data analytics can process large amounts of raw data and extract useful, smaller-sized information, which can be used by different parties to make reliable decisions. In this paper, we conduct a survey on the role that big data analytics can play in the design of data communication networks. Integrating the latest advances that employ big data analytics with the networks control/traffic layers might be the best way to build robust data communication networks with refined performance and intelligent features. First, the survey starts with the introduction of the big data basic concepts, framework, and characteristics. Second, we illustrate the main network design cycle employing big data analytics. This cycle represents the umbrella concept that unifies the surveyed topics. Third, there is a detailed review of the current academic and industrial efforts toward network design using big data analytics. Forth, we identify the challenges confronting the utilization of big data analytics in network design. Finally, we highlight several future research directions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first survey that addresses the use of big data analytics techniques for the design of a broad range of networks.

In the second stage, we optimize transponder configuration including spectrum and transmit power parameters to minimize transponder power consumption. We show how QoS and transponder power consumption are represented by convex expressions and use the results to formulate a convex problem for configuring transponders in which transmit optical power is an optimization variable. Simulation results demonstrate that the power consumption is reduced by 9% when the proposed routing and grooming algorithm is applied to European Cost239 network with aggregate traffic 60 Tbps. It is shown that our convex formulation for transponder parameter assignment is considerably faster than its MINLP counterpart and its ability to optimize transmit optical power improves transponder power consumption by 8% for aggregate traffic 60 Tbps. Furthermore, we investigate the effect of adaptive modulation assignment and transponder capacity on inherent tradeoff between network CAPEX and OPEX.

Resource allocation with quality of service constraints is one of the most challenging problems in elastic optical networks which is normally formulated as an MINLP optimization program. In this paper, we focus on novel properties of geometric optimization and provide a heuristic approach for resource allocation which is very faster than its MINLP counterpart. Our heuristic consists of two main parts for routing/traffic ordering and power/spectrum assignment. It aims at minimization of transmitted optical power and spectrum usage constrained to quality of service and physical requirements. We consider three routing/traffic ordering procedures and compare them in terms of total transmitted optical power, total received noise power and total nonlinear interference including self- and cross-channel interferences. We propose a posynomial expression for optical signal to noise ratio in which fiber nonlinearities and spontaneous emission noise have been addressed. We also propose posynomial expressions that relate modulation spectral efficiency to its corresponding minimum required optical signal to noise ratio. We then use the posynomial expressions to develop six geometric formulations for power/spectrum assignment part of the heuristic which are different in run time, complexity and accuracy. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed solution has a very good accuracy and much lower computational complexity in comparison with MINLP formulation. As example for European Cost239 optical network with 46 transmit transponders, the geometric formulations can be more than 59 times faster than its MINLP counterpart. Numerical results also reveal that in long-haul elastic optical networks, considering the product of the number of common fiber spans and the transmission bit rate is a better goal function for routing/traffic ordering sub-problem.

The common and traditional method for dispersion compensation in optical domain is concatenating the transmit optical fiber by a compensating optical fiber having high-negative dispersion coefficient. In this paper, we take an opposite direction and show how an optical fiber with high-positive dispersion coefficient can also be used for dispersion compensation. Our optical dispersion compensating structure is the optical implementation of an iterative algorithm in signal processing. The proposed dispersion compensating system is constructed by cascading a number of compensating sub-systems and its compensation capability is improved by increasing the number of embedded sub-systems. We also show that the compensation capability is a trade-off between transmission length and bandwidth. We use simulation results to validate the performance of the introduced dispersion compensating module. Photonic crystal fibers with high-positive dispersion coefficient can be used for constructing the proposed optical dispersion compensating module.

Spectrum conversion can improve the performance of OFDM-based Elastic Optical Networks (EONs) by relaxing the continuity constraint and consequently reducing connection request blocking probability during Routing and Spectrum Assignment (RSA) process. We propose three different architectures for including spectrum conversion capability in Bandwidth-Variable Wavelength Cross-Connects (BVWXCs). To compare the capability of the introduced architectures, we develop an analytical method for computing average connection request blocking probability in a spectrum-convertible OFDM-based EON in which all, part or none of the BVWXCs can convert the spectrum. An algorithm for distributing a limited number of Spectrum-Convertible Bandwidth-Variable Wavelength Cross-Connects (SCBVWXCs) in an OFDM-based EON is also proposed. Finally, we use simulation results to evaluate the accuracy of the proposed method for calculating connection request blocking probability and the capability of the introduced algorithm for SCBVWXC placement.

OCDMA systems can support multiple classes of service by differentiating code parameters, power level and diversity order. In this paper, we analyze BER performance of a multi-class 1D/2D OCDMA system and propose a new approximation method that can be used to generate accurate estimation of system BER using a simple mathematical form. The proposed approximation provides insight into proper system level analysis, system level design and sensitivity of system performance to the factors such as code parameters, power level and diversity order. Considering code design, code cardinality and system performance constraints, two design problems are defined and their optimal solutions are provided. We then propose an adaptive OCDMA-PON that adaptively shares unused resources of inactive users among active ones to improve upstream system performance. Using the approximated BER expression and defined design problems, two adaptive code allocation algorithms for the adaptive OCDMA-PON are presented and their performances are evaluated by simulation. Simulation results show that the adaptive code allocation algorithms can increase average transmission rate or decrease average optical power consumption of ONUs for dynamic traffic patterns. According to the simulation results, for an adaptive OCDMA-PON with BER value of 1e-7 and user activity probability of 0.5, transmission rate (optical power consumption) can be increased (decreased) by a factor of 2.25 (0.27) compared to fixed code assignment.
