The conventional non-coherent differential detection of continuous phase modulation (CPM) is quite robust to channel impairments such as phase and Doppler shifts. Its implementation is on top of that simple. It consists in multiplying the received baseband signal by its conjugate and delayed version of one symbol period. However it suffers from a signal-to-noise ratio gap compared to the optimum coherent detection. In this paper, we improve the error rate performance of the conventional differential detection by using a delay higher than one symbol period. We derive the trellis description as well as the branch and cumulative metric that take into account a delay of $K$ symbol periods. We then derive an optimization criterion of $K$ based on the minimum Euclidean distance between two differential signals. We finally determine optimized delays for some popular CPM formats whose values are confirmed by error rate simulations.

Abstract:
The objective of this paper is to minimize the energy consumption of a quantized Min-Sum LDPC decoder, by considering aggressive voltage downscaling of the decoder circuit. Since low power supply may introduce faults in the memories used by the decoder architecture, this paper proposes to optimize the energy consumption of the faulty Min-Sum decoder while satisfying a given performance criterion.…

The objective of this paper is to minimize the energy consumption of a quantized Min-Sum LDPC decoder, by considering aggressive voltage downscaling of the decoder circuit. Since low power supply may introduce faults in the memories used by the decoder architecture, this paper proposes to optimize the energy consumption of the faulty Min-Sum decoder while satisfying a given performance criterion. The proposed optimization method relies on a coordinate descent algorithm that optimizes code and decoder parameters which have a strong influence on the decoder energy consumption: codeword length, number of quantization bits, and failure probability of the memories. Optimal parameter values are provided for several codes defined by their protographs, and significant energy gains are observed compared to non-optimized setups.

Considering a short frame length, which is typical in Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency and massive Machine Type Communications, a trade-off exists between improving the performance of frame synchronization (FS) and improving the performance of information throughput. In this paper, we consider the case of continuous transmission over AWGN channels where the synchronization sequence is superimposed to the data symbols, as opposed to being added as a frame header. The advantage of this superposition is that the synchronization length is as long as the frame length. On the other hand, its power has to be traded-off not to degrade the code performance. We first provide the analysis of FS error probability using an approximation of the probability distribution of the overall received signal. Numerical evaluations show the tightness of our analytic results. Then we optimize the fraction of power allocated to the superimposed synchronization sequence in order to maximize the probability of receiving a frame without synchronization errors nor decoding errors. Comparison of the theoretical model predictions to a practical setup show very close optimal power allocation policies.

Abstract:
We design new continuous phase modulation (CPM) formats which are based on the combination of a proper precoder with binary input and a ternary CPM. The proposed precoder constrains the signal phase evolution in order to increase the minimum Euclidean distance, and to limit the bandwidth expansion due to the use of a ternary CPM. The resulting schemes are highly spectrally efficient and outperform classical binary and quaternary formats in terms of coded and uncoded performance.
