Abstract:
The simple random walk on $\mathbb{Z}^p$ shows two drastically different behaviours depending on the value of $p$: it is recurrent when $p\in\{1,2\}$ while it escapes (with a rate increasing with $p$) as soon as $p\geq3$. This classical example illustrates that the asymptotic properties of a random walk provides some information on the structure of its state space. This paper aims to explore analo…

This paper aims to explore analogous questions on space made up of combinatorial objects with no algebraic structure. We take as a model for this problem the space of unordered unlabeled rooted trees endowed with Zhang edit distance. To this end, it defines the canonical unbiased random walk on the space of trees and provides an efficient algorithm to evaluate its escape rate. Compared to Zhang algorithm, it is incremental and computes the edit distance along the random walk approximately 100 times faster on trees of size $500$ on average. The escape rate of the random walk on trees is precisely estimated using intensive numerical simulations, out of reasonable reach without the incremental algorithm.

This paper investigates the impact of LiDAR configuration shifts on the performance of 3D LiDAR point cloud semantic segmentation models, a topic not extensively studied before. We explore the effect of using different LiDAR channels when training and testing a 3D LiDAR point cloud semantic segmentation model, utilizing Cylinder3D for the experiments. A Cylinder3D model is trained and tested on simulated 3D LiDAR point cloud datasets created using the Mississippi State University Autonomous Vehicle Simulator (MAVS) and 32, 64 channel 3D LiDAR point clouds of the RELLIS-3D dataset collected in a real-world off-road environment. Our experimental results demonstrate that sensor and spatial domain shifts significantly impact the performance of LiDAR-based semantic segmentation models. In the absence of spatial domain changes between training and testing, models trained and tested on the same sensor type generally exhibited better performance. Moreover, higher-resolution sensors showed improved performance compared to those with lower-resolution ones. However, results varied when spatial domain changes were present. In some cases, the advantage of a sensor's higher resolution led to better performance both with and without sensor domain shifts. In other instances, the higher resolution resulted in overfitting within a specific domain, causing a lack of generalization capability and decreased performance when tested on data with different sensor configurations.

Grasp planning and most specifically the grasp space exploration is still an open issue in robotics. This article presents an efficient procedure for exploring the grasp space of a multifingered adaptive gripper for generating reliable grasps given a known object pose. This procedure relies on a limited dataset of manually specified expert grasps, and use a mixed analytic and data-driven approach based on the use of a grasp quality metric and variational autoencoders. The performances of this method are assessed by generating grasps in simulation for three different objects. On this grasp planning task, this method reaches a grasp success rate of 99.91% on 7000 trials.

Grasp planning and most specifically the grasp space exploration is still an open issue in robotics. This article presents a data-driven oriented methodology to model the grasp space of a multi-fingered adaptive gripper for known objects. This method relies on a limited dataset of manually specified expert grasps, and uses variational autoencoder to learn grasp intrinsic features in a compact way from a computational point of view. The learnt model can then be used to generate new non-learnt gripper configurations to explore the grasp space.

As telecommunications technology progresses, telehealth frameworks are becoming more widely adopted in the context of long-term care (LTC) for older adults, both in care facilities and in homes. Today, robots could assist healthcare workers when they provide care to elderly patients, who constitute a particularly vulnerable population during the COVID-19 pandemic. Previous work on user-centered design of assistive technologies in LTC facilities for seniors has identified positive impacts. The need to deal with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic emphasizes the benefits of this approach, but also highlights some new challenges for which robots could be interesting solutions to be deployed in LTC facilities. This requires customization of telecommunication and audio/video/data processing to address specific clinical requirements and needs. This paper presents OpenTera, an open source telehealth framework, aiming to facilitate prototy** of such solutions by software and robotic designers. Designed as a microservice-oriented platform, OpenTera is an end-to-end solution that employs a series of independent modules for tasks such as data and session management, telehealth, daily assistive tasks/actions, together with smart devices and environments, all connected through the framework. After explaining the framework, we illustrate how OpenTera can be used to implement robotic solutions for different applications identified in LTC facilities and homes, and we describe how we plan to validate them through field trials.

The class of self-nested trees presents remarkable compression properties because of the systematic repetition of subtrees in their structure. In this paper, we provide a better combinatorial characterization of this specific family of trees. In particular, we show from both theoretical and practical viewpoints that complex queries can be quickly answered in self-nested trees compared to general trees. We also present an approximation algorithm of a tree by a self-nested one that can be used in fast prediction of edit distance between two trees.
