Three-dimensional immersive sketching for content creation and modeling has been studied for some time. However, research in this domain mainly focused on CAVE-like scenarios. These setups can be expensive and offer a narrow interaction space. Building more affordable setups using head-mounted displays is possible, allowing greater immersion and a larger space for user physical movements. This paper presents a fully immersive environment using bi-manual gestures to sketch and create content freely in the virtual world. This approach can be applied to many scenarios, allowing people to express their ideas or review existing designs. To cope with known motor difficulties and inaccuracy of freehand 3D sketching, we explore proxy geometry and a laser-like metaphor to draw content directly from models and create content surfaces. Our current prototype offers 24 cubic meters for movement, limited by the room size. It features infinite virtual drawing space through pan and scale techniques and is larger than the typical 6-sided cave at a fraction of the cost. In a preliminary study conducted with architects and engineers, our system showed a clear promise as a tool for sketching and 3D content creation in virtual reality with a great emphasis on bi-manual gestures.

Progress on the numerical modeling of a prototype fuel cell is reported. Some known limitations of the previously published Alpha model are addressed, and the numerical uncertainty due to discretization of the improved model, Beta, was estimated. In Part 1, the Beta model is compared to Alpha, where significant albeit small differences are seen. Shortcomings of the improved model are discussed, paving the way forward, while a discrepancy with previous results is addressed, further suggesting the use of the Darcy-Brinkman over Stokes-Darcy formulation for free and porous media flow. Furthermore, a parametric study is carried out, constraining plausible values of the reaction rate constants identifying additional opportunities for validation. In Part 2, a mesh convergence study is carried out to estimate the discretization error of Beta model. A reduced, proxy geometry and two extrapolation schemes are used to estimate the exact solution, which is then used to estimate the model's uncertainty through the Grid Convergence Index framework. Error estimates are on average $\sim 10\%$ for the flow rate range simulated, larger than experimental ones available. Results suggest a difficulty in achieving mesh convergence in fuel cell-like models, even in simpler cases. Caution is thus suggested during validation or when devising predictions from numerical models. Finally, given the uncertainties in the numerical data and the available experimental data, the results lack validation power, highlighting the need for additional experimental data and improved precision for the numerical data.

Keyword extraction has received an increasing attention as an important research topic which can lead to have advancements in diverse applications such as document context categorization, text indexing and document classification. In this paper we propose STF-IDF, a novel semantic method based on TF-IDF, for scoring word importance of informal documents in a corpus. A set of nearly four million documents from health-care social media was collected and was trained in order to draw semantic model and to find the word embeddings. Then, the features of semantic space were utilized to rearrange the original TF-IDF scores through an iterative solution so as to improve the moderate performance of this algorithm on informal texts. After testing the proposed method with 200 randomly chosen documents, our method managed to decrease the TF-IDF mean error rate by a factor of 50% and reaching the mean error of 13.7%, as opposed to 27.2% of the original TF-IDF.

Modern research in content-based image retrieval systems (CIBR) has become progressively more focused on the richness of human semantics. Several approaches may be used to reduced the 'semantic gap' between the high-level human experience and the low level visual features of pictures. Object ontology, among others, is one of the methods. In this paper we investigate the use of a codified emotion ontology over global color features of images to annotate the images at a high semantic level. In order to speed up the annotation process the images are sampled so that each digital image is represented by a random subset of its content. We test within controlled conditions how this random subset may represent the adequate high level emotional concept presented in the image. We monitor this information reducing process with entropy measures, showing that controlled random sampling can capture with significant relevance high level concepts for picture representation.

The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) tear is a common medical condition that is treated using arthroscopy by pulling a tissue graft through a tunnel opened with a drill. The correct anatomical position and orientation of this tunnel is crucial for knee stability, and drilling an adequate bone tunnel is the most technically challenging part of the procedure. This paper presents, for the first time, a guidance system based solely on intra-operative video for guiding the drilling of the tunnel. Our solution uses small, easily recognizable visual markers that are attached to the bone and tools for estimating their relative pose. A recent registration algorithm is employed for aligning a pre-operative image of the patient's anatomy with a set of contours reconstructed by touching the bone surface with an instrumented tool. Experimental validation using ex-vivo data shows that the method enables the accurate registration of the pre-operative model with the bone, providing useful information for guiding the surgeon during the medical procedure.
