In this paper, we present our approach to tackle Qur'an QA 2023 shared tasks A and B. To address the challenge of low-resourced training data, we rely on transfer learning together with a voting ensemble to improve prediction stability across multiple runs. Additionally, we employ different architectures and learning mechanisms for a range of Arabic pre-trained transformer-based models for both tasks. To identify unanswerable questions, we propose using a thresholding mechanism. Our top-performing systems greatly surpass the baseline performance on the hidden split, achieving a MAP score of 25.05% for task A and a partial Average Precision (pAP) of 57.11% for task B.

In recent years, we witnessed great progress in different tasks of natural language understanding using machine learning. Question answering is one of these tasks which is used by search engines and social media platforms for improved user experience. Arabic is the language of the Holy Qur'an; the sacred text for 1.8 billion people across the world. Arabic is a challenging language for Natural Language Processing (NLP) due to its complex structures. In this article, we describe our attempts at OSACT5 Qur'an QA 2022 Shared Task, which is a question answering challenge on the Holy Qur'an in Arabic. We propose an ensemble learning model based on Arabic variants of BERT models. In addition, we perform post-processing to enhance the model predictions. Our system achieves a Partial Reciprocal Rank (pRR) score of 56.6% on the official test set.

Evolutionary Algorithms are naturally inspired approximation optimisation algorithms that usually interfere with science problems when common mathematical methods are unable to provide a good solution or finding the exact solution requires an unreasonable amount of time using traditional exhaustive search algorithms. The success of these population-based frameworks is mainly due to their flexibility and ease of adaptation to the most different and complex optimisation problems. This paper presents a metaheuristic algorithm called Stochastic Fractal Search, inspired by the natural phenomenon of growth based on a mathematical concept called the fractal, which is shown to be able to explore the search space more efficiently. This paper also focuses on the algorithm steps and some example applications of engineering design optimisation problems commonly used in the literature being applied to the proposed algorithm.
