The shortage of people trained in STEM fields is becoming acute, and universities and colleges are straining to satisfy this demand. In the case of computer science, for instance, the number of US students taking introductory courses has grown three-fold in the past decade. Recently, massive open online courses (MOOCs) have been promoted as a way to ease this strain. This at best provides access to education. The bigger challenge though is co** with heterogeneous backgrounds of different students, retention, providing feedback, and assessment. Personalized education relying on computational tools can address this challenge.
While automated tutoring has been studied at different times in different communities, recent advances in computing and education technology offer exciting opportunities to transform the manner in which students learn. In particular, at least three trends are significant. First, progress in logical reasoning, data analytics, and natural language processing has led to tutoring tools for automatic assessment, personalized instruction including targeted feedback, and adaptive content generation for a variety of subjects. Second, research in the science of learning and human-computer interaction is leading to a better understanding of how different students learn, when and what types of interventions are effective for different instructional goals, and how to measure the success of educational tools. Finally, the recent emergence of online education platforms, both in academia and industry, is leading to new opportunities for the development of a shared infrastructure. This CCC workshop brought together researchers develo** educational tools based on technologies such as logical reasoning and machine learning with researchers in education, human-computer interaction, and cognitive psychology.

The Computing Community Consortium (CCC), along with the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), and the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), co-sponsored a public workshop on Artificial Intelligence for Social Good on June 7th, 2016 in Washington, DC. This was one of five workshops that OSTP co-sponsored and held around the country to spur public dialogue on artificial intelligence, machine learning, and to identify challenges and opportunities related to AI. In the AI for Social Good workshop, the successful deployments and the potential use of AI in various topics that are essential for social good were discussed, including but not limited to urban computing, health, environmental sustainability, and public welfare. This report highlights each of these as well as a number of crosscutting issues.

Increasingly, smart computing devices, with powerful sensors and internet connectivity, are being embedded into all new forms of infrastructure, from hospitals to roads to factories. These devices are part of the Internet of Things (IoT) and the economic value of their widespread deployment is estimated to be trillions of dollars, with billions of devices deployed. Consider the example of "smart meters" for electricity utilities. Because of clear economic benefits, including a reduction in the cost of reading meters, more precise information about outages and diagnostics, and increased benefits from predicting and balancing electric loads, such meters are already being rolled out across North America. With residential solar collection, smart meters allow individuals to sell power back to the grid providing economic incentives for conservation. Similarly, smart water meters allow water conservation in a drought. Such infrastructure upgrades are infrequent (with smart meters expected to be in service for 20-30 years) but the benefits from the upgrade justify the significant cost. A long-term benefit of such upgrades is that unforeseen savings might be realized in the future when new analytic techniques are applied to the data that is collected. The same benefits accrue to any infrastructure that embeds increased sensing and actuation capabilities via IoT devices, including roads and traffic control, energy and water management in buildings, and public health monitoring.

A recent McKinsey report estimates the economic impact of the Internet of Things (IoT) to be between $3.9 to $11 trillion dollars by 20251 . IoT has the potential to have a profound impact on our daily lives, including technologies for the home, for health, for transportation, and for managing our natural resources. The Internet was largely driven by information and ideas generated by people, but advances in sensing and hardware have enabled computers to more easily observe the physical world. Coupling this additional layer of information with advances in machine learning brings dramatic new capabilities including the ability to capture and process tremendous amounts of data; to predict behaviors, activities, and the future in uncanny ways; and to manipulate the physical world in response. This trend will fundamentally change how people interact with physical objects and the environment. Success in develo** value-added capabilities around IoT requires a broad approach that includes expertise in sensing and hardware, machine learning, networked systems, human-computer interaction, security, and privacy. Strategies for making IoT practical and spurring its ultimate adoption also require a multifaceted approach that often transcends technology, such as with concerns over data security, privacy, public policy, and regulatory issues. In this paper we argue that existing best practices in building robust and secure systems are insufficient to address the new challenges that IoT systems will present. We provide recommendations regarding investments in research areas that will help address inadequacies in existing systems, practices, tools, and policies.

Today's cities face many challenges due to population growth, aging population, pedestrian and vehicular traffic congestion, water usage increase, increased electricity demands, crumbling physical infrastructure of buildings, roads, water sewage, power grid, and declining health care services. Moreover, major trends indicate the global urbanization of society, and the associated pressures it brings, will continue to accelerate. One of the approaches to assist in solving some of the challenges is to deploy extensive IT technology. It has been recognized that cyber-technology plays a key role in improving quality of people's lives, strengthening business and hel** government agencies serve citizens better. In this white paper, we discuss the benefits and challenges of cyber-technologies within "Smart Cities", especially the IoT (Internet of Things) for smart communities, which means considering the benefits and challenges of IoT cyber-technologies on smart cities physical infrastructures and their human stakeholders. To point out the IoT challenges, we will first present the framework within which IoT lives, and then proceed with the challenges, conclusions and recommendations.
