Zero-touch network is anticipated to inaugurate the generation of intelligent and highly flexible resource provisioning strategies where multiple service providers collaboratively offer computation and storage resources. This transformation presents substantial challenges to network administration and service providers regarding sustainability and scalability. This article combines Distributed Artificial Intelligence (DAI) with Zero-touch Provisioning (ZTP) for edge networks. This combination helps to manage network devices seamlessly and intelligently by minimizing human intervention. In addition, several advantages are also highlighted that come with incorporating Distributed AI into ZTP in the context of edge networks. Further, we draw potential research directions to foster novel studies in this field and overcome the current limitations.

By bringing computing capacity from a remote cloud environment closer to the user, fog computing is introduced. As a result, users can access the services from more nearby computing environments, resulting in better quality of service and lower latency on the network. From the service providers' point of view, this addresses the network latency and congestion issues. This is achieved by deploying the services in cloud and fog computing environments. The responsibility of service providers is to manage the heterogeneous resources available in both computing environments. In recent years, resource management strategies have made it possible to efficiently allocate resources from nearby fog and clouds to users' applications. Unfortunately, these existing resource management strategies fail to give the desired result when the service providers have the opportunity to allocate the resources to the users' application from fog nodes that are at a multi-hop distance from the nearby fog node. The complexity of this resource management problem drastically increases in a MultiFog-Cloud environment. This problem motivates us to revisit and present a novel Heuristic Resource Allocation and Optimization algorithm in a MultiFog-Cloud (HeRAFC) environment. Taking users' application priority, execution time, and communication latency into account, HeRAFC optimizes resource utilization and minimizes cloud load. The proposed algorithm is evaluated and compared with related algorithms. The simulation results show the efficiency of the proposed HeRAFC over other algorithms.

Renewable Energies (RE) have gained more attention in recent years since they offer clean and sustainable energy. One of the major sustainable development goals (SDG-7) set by the United Nations (UN) is to achieve affordable and clean energy for everyone. Among the world's all renewable resources, solar energy is considered as the most abundant and can certainly fulfill the target of SDGs. Solar energy is converted into electrical energy through Photovoltaic (PV) panels with no greenhouse gas emissions. However, power generated by PV panels is highly dependent on solar radiation received at a particular location over a given time period. Therefore, it is challenging to forecast the amount of PV output power. Predicting the output power of PV systems is essential since several public or private institutes generate such green energy, and need to maintain the balance between demand and supply. This research aims to forecast PV system output power based on weather and derived features using different machine learning models. The objective is to obtain the best-fitting model to precisely predict output power by inspecting the data. Moreover, different performance metrics are used to compare and evaluate the accuracy under different machine learning models such as random forest, XGBoost, KNN, etc.

With the increasing number of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, massive amounts of raw data is being generated. The latency, cost, and other challenges in cloud-based IoT data processing have driven the adoption of Edge and Fog computing models, where some data processing tasks are moved closer to data sources. Properly dealing with the flow of such data requires building data pipelines, to control the complete life cycle of data streams from data acquisition at the data source, edge and fog processing, to Cloud side storage and analytics. Data analytics tasks need to be executed dynamically at different distances from the data sources and often on very heterogeneous hardware devices. This can be streamlined by the use of a Serverless (or FaaS) cloud computing model, where tasks are defined as virtual functions, which can be migrated from edge to cloud (and vice versa) and executed in an event-driven manner on data streams. In this work, we investigate the benefits of building Serverless data pipelines (SDP) for IoT data analytics and evaluate three different approaches for designing SDPs: 1) Off-the-shelf data flow tool (DFT) based, 2) Object storage service (OSS) based and 3) MQTT based. Further, we applied these strategies on three fog applications (Aeneas, PocketSphinx, and custom Video processing application) and evaluated the performance by comparing their processing time (computation time, network communication and disk access time), and resource utilization. Results show that DFT is unsuitable for compute-intensive applications such as video or image processing, whereas OSS is best suitable for this task. However, DFT is nicely fit for bandwidth-intensive applications due to the minimum use of network resources. On the other hand, MQTT-based SDP is observed with increase in CPU and Memory usage as the number of...<truncted to fit character limit in Arxiv>

The recent advances in virtualization technology have enabled the sharing of computing and networking resources of cloud data centers among multiple users. Virtual Network Embedding (VNE) is highly important and is an integral part of the cloud resource management. The lack of historical knowledge on cloud functioning and inability to foresee the future resource demand are two fundamental shortcomings of the traditional VNE approaches. The consequence of those shortcomings is the inefficient embedding of virtual resources on Substrate Nodes (SNs). On the contrary, application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in VNE is still in the premature stage and needs further investigation. Considering the underlying complexity of VNE that includes numerous parameters, intelligent solutions are required to utilize the cloud resources efficiently via careful selection of appropriate SNs for the VNE. In this paper, Reinforcement Learning based prediction model is designed for the efficient Multi-stage Virtual Network Embedding (MUVINE) among the cloud data centers. The proposed MUVINE scheme is extensively simulated and evaluated against the recent state-of-the-art schemes. The simulation outcomes show that the proposed MUVINE scheme consistently outperforms over the existing schemes and provides the promising results.

In Cloud Computing, the tenants opting for the Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) send the resource requirements to the Cloud Service Provider (CSP) in the form of Virtual Network (VN) consisting of a set of inter-connected Virtual Machines (VM). Embedding the VN onto the existing physical network is known as Virtual Network Embedding (VNE) problem. One of the major research challenges is to allocate the physical resources such that the failure of the physical resources would bring less impact onto the users' service. Additionally, the major challenge is to handle the embedding process of growing number of incoming users' VNs from the algorithm design point-of-view. Considering both of the above-mentioned research issues, a novel Failure aware Semi-Centralized VNE (FSC-VNE) algorithm is proposed for the Fat-Tree data center network with the goal to reduce the impact of the resource failure onto the existing users. The impact of failure of the Physical Machines (PMs), physical links and network devices are taken into account while allocating the resources to the users. The beauty of the proposed algorithm is that the VMs are assigned to different PMs in a semi-centralized manner. In other words, the embedding algorithm is executed by multiple physical servers in order to concurrently embed the VMs of a VN and reduces the embedding time. Extensive simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can outperform over other VNE algorithms.

The serverless platform allows a customer to effectively use cloud resources and pay for the exact amount of used resources. A number of dedicated open source and commercial cloud data management tools are available to handle the massive amount of data. Such modern cloud data management tools are not enough matured to integrate the generic cloud application with the serverless platform due to the lack of mature and stable standards. One of the most popular and mature standards, TOSCA (Topology and Orchestration Specification for Cloud Applications), mainly focuses on application and service portability and automated management of the generic cloud application components. This paper proposes the extension of the TOSCA standard, TOSCAdata, that focuses on the modeling of data pipeline-based cloud applications. Kee** the requirements of modern data pipeline cloud applications, TOSCAdata provides a number of TOSCA models that are independently deployable, schedulable, scalable, and re-usable, while effectively handling the flow and transformation of data in a pipeline manner. We also demonstrate the applicability of proposed TOSCAdata models by taking a web-based cloud application in the context of tourism promotion as a use case scenario.

The applications that are deployed in the cloud to provide services to the users encompass a large number of interconnected dependent cloud components. Multiple identical components are scheduled to run concurrently in order to handle unexpected failures and provide uninterrupted service to the end user, which introduces resource overhead problem for the cloud service provider. Furthermore such resource-intensive fault tolerant strategies bring extra monetary overhead to the cloud service provider and eventually to the cloud users. In order to address these issues, a novel fault tolerant strategy based on the significance level of each component is developed. The communication topology among the application components, their historical performance, failure rate, failure impact on other components, dependencies among them, etc., are used to rank those application components to further decide on the importance of one component over others. Based on the rank, a Markov Decision Process (MDP) model is presented to determine the number of replicas that varies from one component to another. A rigorous performance evaluation is carried out using some of the most common practically useful metrics such as, recovery time upon a fault, average number of components needed, number of parallel components successfully executed, etc., to quote a few, with similar component ranking and fault tolerant strategies. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm reduces the required number of virtual and physical machines by approximately 10% and 4.2%, respectively, compared to other similar algorithms.

Fog computing is introduced by shifting cloud resources towards the users' proximity to mitigate the limitations possessed by cloud computing. Fog environment made its limited resource available to a large number of users to deploy their serverless applications, composed of several serverless functions. One of the primary intentions behind introducing the fog environment is to fulfil the demand of latency and location-sensitive serverless applications through its limited resources. The recent research mainly focuses on assigning maximum resources to such applications from the fog node and not taking full advantage of the cloud environment. This introduces a negative impact in providing the resources to a maximum number of connected users. To address this issue, in this paper, we investigated the optimum percentage of a user's request that should be fulfilled by fog and cloud. As a result, we proposed DeF-DReL, a Systematic Deployment of Serverless Functions in Fog and Cloud environments using Deep Reinforcement Learning, using several real-life parameters, such as distance and latency of the users from nearby fog node, user's priority, the priority of the serverless applications and their resource demand, etc. The performance of the DeF-DReL algorithm is further compared with recent related algorithms. From the simulation and comparison results, its superiority over other algorithms and its applicability to the real-life scenario can be clearly observed.
