Fault diagnosis is an essential component in process supervision. Indeed, it determines which kind of fault has occurred, given that it has been previously detected, allowing for appropriate intervention. Automatic fault diagnosis systems use machine learning for predicting the fault type from sensor readings. Nonetheless, these models are sensible to changes in the data distributions, which may be caused by changes in the monitored process, such as changes in the mode of operation. This scenario is known as Cross-Domain Fault Diagnosis (CDFD). We provide an extensive comparison of single and multi-source unsupervised domain adaptation (SSDA and MSDA respectively) algorithms for CDFD. We study these methods in the context of the Tennessee-Eastmann Process, a widely used benchmark in the chemical industry. We show that using multiple domains during training has a positive effect, even when no adaptation is employed. As such, the MSDA baseline improves over the SSDA baseline classification accuracy by 23% on average. In addition, under the multiple-sources scenario, we improve classification accuracy of the no adaptation setting by 8.4% on average.

We propose a grid-like computational model of tubular reactors. The architecture is inspired by the computations performed by solvers of partial differential equations which describe the dynamics of the chemical process inside a tubular reactor. The proposed model may be entirely based on the known form of the partial differential equations or it may contain generic machine learning components such as multi-layer perceptrons. We show that the proposed model can be trained using limited amounts of data to describe the state of a fixed-bed catalytic reactor. The trained model can reconstruct unmeasured states such as the catalyst activity using the measurements of inlet concentrations and temperatures along the reactor.

Quantification of economic uncertainty is a key concept for the prediction of macro economic variables such as gross domestic product (GDP), and it becomes particularly relevant on real-time or short-time predictions methodologies, such as nowcasting, where it is required a large amount of time series data, commonly with different structures and frequencies. Most of the data comes from the official agencies statistics and non-public institutions, however, relying our estimates in just the traditional data mentioned before, have some disadvantages. One of them is that economic uncertainty could not be represented or measured in a proper way based solely in financial or macroeconomic data, another one, is that they are susceptible to lack of information due to extraordinary events, such as the current COVID-19 pandemic. For these reasons, it is very common nowadays to use some non-traditional data from different sources, such as social networks or digital newspapers, in addition to the traditional data from official sources. The economic policy uncertainty (EPU) index, is the most used newspaper-based indicator to quantify the uncertainty, and is based on topic modeling of newspapers. In this paper, we propose a methodology to estimate the EPU index, which incorporates a fast and efficient method for topic modeling of digital news based on semantic clustering with word embeddings, allowing to update the index in real-time, which is a drawback with another proposals that use computationally intensive methods for topic modeling, such as Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA). We show that our proposal allow us to update the index and significantly reduces the time required for new document assignation into topics.

Patients undergoing physical rehabilitation therapy must perform series of exercises regularly over a long period of time to improve, or at least not to worsen, their condition. Rehabilitation can easily become boring because of the tedious repetition of simple exercises, which can also cause mild pain and discomfort. As a consequence, patients often fail to follow their rehabilitation schedule with the required regularity, thus endangering their recovery. In the last decade, video games have become largely popular and the availability of advanced input controllers has made them a viable approach to make physical rehabilitation more entertaining while increasing patients motivation. In this paper, we present a framework integrating serious games for the lower-limb rehabilitation of children suffering from Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA). The framework comprises games that implement parts of the therapeutic protocol followed by the young patients and provides modules to tune, control, record, and analyze the therapeutic sessions. We present the result of a preliminary validation we performed with patients at the clinic under therapists supervision. The feedback we received has been overall very positive both from patients, who enjoyed performing their usual therapy using video games, and therapists, who liked how the games could keep the children engaged and motivated while performing the usual therapeutic routine.

Rehabilitation is a painful and tiring process involving series of exercises that patients must repeat over a long period. Unfortunately, patients often grow bored, frustrated, and lose motivation making rehabilitation less effective. In the recent years video games have been widely used to implement rehabilitation protocols so as to make the process more entertaining, engaging and to keep patients motivated. In this paper, we present an integrated framework we developed for the wrist rehabilitation of patients affected by Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) following a therapeutic protocol at the Clinica Pediatrica G. e D. De Marchi. The framework comprises four video games and a set modules that let the therapists tune and control the exercises the games implemented, record all the patients actions, replay and analyze the sessions. We present the result of a preliminary validation we performed with four poliarticular JIA patients at the clinic under the supervision of the therapists. Overall, we received good feedback both from the young patients, who enjoyed performing known rehabilitation exercises using video games, and therapists who were satisfied with the framework and its potentials for engaging and motivating the patients.
