Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are increasingly used to enable wireless communications. Due to their characteristics, such as the ability to hover and carry cargo, UAVs can serve as communications nodes, including Wi-Fi Access Points and Cellular Base Stations. In previous work, we proposed the Sustainable multi-UAV Performance-aware Placement (SUPPLY) algorithm, which focuses on the energy-efficient placement of multiple UAVs acting as Flying Access Points (FAPs). Additionally, we developed the Multi-UAV Energy Consumption (MUAVE) simulator to evaluate the UAV energy consumption, specifically when using the SUPPLY algorithm. However, MUAVE was initially designed to compute the energy consumption for rotary-wing UAVs only.
In this paper, we propose eMUAVE, an enhanced version of the MUAVE simulator that allows the evaluation of the energy consumption for both rotary-wing and fixed-wing UAVs. Our energy consumption evaluation using eMUAVE considers reference and random networking scenarios. The results show that fixed-wing UAVs can be employed in the majority of networking scenarios. However, rotary-wing UAVs are typically more energy-efficient than fixed-wing UAVs when following the trajectories defined by SUPPLY.

Each generation of cellular networks is characterized by its distinct capabilities and innovations, which reflect the significant milestones reached with each new release. 5G has made substantial progress through the deployment of advanced encoding and modulation techniques, nearly reaching the Shannon physical capacity limit. In light of the requirements of Beyond-5G technologies, there is the need of a paradigm shift in the development of communication systems.
Recent developments in the realm of Artificial Intelligence (AI) have enabled the deployment of tools with high abstraction capabilities, relevant for feature extraction processes and End-to-End system optimization tasks. In this context, Semantic Communications has emerged as a novel information transmission system, with AI as one of the core components in its implementation. This communication paradigm relies on the extraction and transmission of the "semantic meaning" of the source information using AI techniques, diverging from the conventional systems that primarily focus on ensuring the successful reception of the transmitted bits.
The purpose of this survey is to provide a comprehensive overview of the fundamental concepts underlying Semantic Communications, including Shannon's Information Theory, classical and modern theories of semantic information, and an examination of the framework and system design of Semantic Communications. Additionally, recent implementations are reviwed, including the analysis of Semantic Communications systems according to the information object transmitted and the objective of the information transmission. Moreover, an in-depth study of prototypes and demonstrations are presented, supporting the viability of the Semantic Communications systems. Finally, some of the most relevant open challenges are detailed, highlighting open research questions to be pursued in Semantic Communications.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are used for a wide range of applications. Due to characteristics such as the ability to hover and carry cargo on-board, rotary-wing UAVs have been considered suitable platforms for carrying communications nodes, including Wi-Fi Access Points and cellular Base Stations. This gave rise to the concept of Flying Networks (FNs), now making part of the so-called Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTNs) defined in 3GPP. In scenarios where the deployment of terrestrial networks is not feasible, the use of FNs has emerged as a solution to provide wireless connectivity. However, the management of the communications resources in FNs imposes significant challenges, especially regarding the positioning of the UAVs so that the Quality of Service (QoS) offered to the Ground Users (GUs) and devices is maximized. Moreover, unlike terrestrial networks that are directly connected to the power grid, UAVs typically rely on on-board batteries that need to be recharged. In order to maximize the UAVs' flying time, the energy consumed by the UAVs needs to be minimized. When it comes to multi-UAV placement, most state-of-the-art solutions focus on maximizing the coverage area and assume that the UAVs keep hovering in a fixed position while serving GUs. Also, they do not address the energy-aware multi-UAV placement problem in networking scenarios where the GUs may have different QoS requirements and may not be uniformly distributed across the area of interest. In this work, we propose the Sustainable multi-UAV Performance-aware Placement (SUPPLY) algorithm. SUPPLY defines the energy and performance-aware positioning of multiple UAVs in an FN. To accomplish this, SUPPLY defines trajectories that minimize UAVs' energy consumption, while ensuring the targeted QoS levels. The obtained results show up to 25% energy consumption reduction with minimal impact on throughput and delay.

Temporal expression identification is crucial for understanding texts written in natural language. Although highly effective systems such as HeidelTime exist, their limited runtime performance hampers adoption in large-scale applications and production environments. In this paper, we introduce the TEI2GO models, matching HeidelTime's effectiveness but with significantly improved runtime, supporting six languages, and achieving state-of-the-art results in four of them. To train the TEI2GO models, we used a combination of manually annotated reference corpus and developed ``Professor HeidelTime'', a comprehensive weakly labeled corpus of news texts annotated with HeidelTime. This corpus comprises a total of $138,069$ documents (over six languages) with $1,050,921$ temporal expressions, the largest open-source annotated dataset for temporal expression identification to date. By describing how the models were produced, we aim to encourage the research community to further explore, refine, and extend the set of models to additional languages and domains. Code, annotations, and models are openly available for community exploration and use. The models are conveniently on HuggingFace for seamless integration and application.

Telecommunications and computer vision have evolved separately so far. Yet, with the shift to sub-terahertz (sub-THz) and terahertz (THz) radio communications, there is an opportunity to explore computer vision technologies together with radio communications, considering the dependency of both technologies on Line of Sight. The combination of radio sensing and computer vision can address challenges such as obstructions and poor lighting. Also, machine learning algorithms, capable of processing multimodal data, play a crucial role in deriving insights from raw and low-level sensing data, offering a new level of abstraction that can enhance various applications and use cases such as beamforming and terminal handovers.
This paper introduces CONVERGE, a pioneering vision-radio paradigm that bridges this gap by leveraging Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) to facilitate a dual "View-to-Communicate, Communicate-to-View" approach. CONVERGE offers tools that merge wireless communications and computer vision, establishing a novel Research Infrastructure (RI) that will be open to the scientific community and capable of providing open datasets. This new infrastructure will support future research in 6G and beyond concerning multiple verticals, such as telecommunications, automotive, manufacturing, media, and health.

The recent advances in natural language processing (NLP) are linked to training processes that require vast amounts of corpora. Access to this data is commonly not a trivial process due to resource dispersion and the need to maintain these infrastructures online and up-to-date. New developments in NLP are often compromised due to the scarcity of data or lack of a shared repository that works as an entry point to the community. This is especially true in low and mid-resource languages, such as Portuguese, which lack data and proper resource management infrastructures. In this work, we propose PT-Pump-Up, a set of tools that aim to reduce resource dispersion and improve the accessibility to Portuguese NLP resources. Our proposal is divided into four software components: a) a web platform to list the available resources; b) a client-side Python package to simplify the loading of Portuguese NLP resources; c) an administrative Python package to manage the platform and d) a public GitHub repository to foster future collaboration and contributions. All four components are accessible using: https://linktr.ee/pt_pump_up

The emerging 6G paradigm and the proliferation of wireless devices require flexible network infrastructures capable of meeting the increasing Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. Mobile Robotic Platforms (MRPs) acting as mobile communications cells are a promising solution to provide on-demand wireless connectivity in dynamic networking scenarios. However, the energy consumption of MRPs is a challenge that must be considered, in order to maximize the availability of the wireless networks created.
The main contribution of this paper is the experimental evaluation of the energy consumption of an MRP acting as a mobile communications cell. The evaluation considers different actions performed by a real MRP, showing that the energy consumption varies significantly with the type of action performed. The obtained results pave the way for optimizing the MRP movement in dynamic networking scenarios so that the wireless network's availability is maximized while minimizing the MRP's energy consumption.

The 6G paradigm and the massive usage of interconnected wireless devices introduced the need for flexible wireless networks. A promising approach lies in employing Mobile Robotic Platforms (MRPs) to create communications cells on-demand. The challenge consists in positioning the MRPs to improve the wireless connectivity offered. This is exacerbated in millimeter wave (mmWave), Terahertz (THz), and visible light-based networks, which imply the establishment of short-range, Line of Sight (LoS) wireless links to take advantage of the ultra-high bandwidth channels available.
This paper proposes a solution to enable the obstacle-aware, autonomous positioning of MRPs and provide LoS wireless connectivity to communications devices. It consists of 1) a Vision Module that uses video data gathered by the MRP to determine the location of obstacles, wireless devices and users, and 2) a Control Module, which autonomously positions the MRP based on the information provided by the Vision Module. The proposed solution was validated in simulation and through experimental testing, showing that it is able to position an MRP while ensuring LoS wireless links between a mobile communications cell and wireless devices or users.

Management of network resources in advanced IoT applications is a challenging topic due to their distributed nature from the Edge to the Cloud, and the heavy demand of real-time data from many sources to take action in the deployment. FANETs (Flying Ad-hoc Networks) are a clear example of heterogeneous multi-modal use cases, which require strict quality in the network communications, as well as the coordination of the computing capabilities, in order to operate correctly the final service. In this paper, we present a Virtual Network Embedding (VNE) framework designed for the allocation of dataflow applications, composed of nano-services that produce or consume data, in a wireless infrastructure, such as an airborne network. To address the problem, an anypath-based heuristic algorithm that considers the quality demand of the communication between nano-services is proposed, coined as Quality-Revenue Paired Anypath Dataflow VNE (QRPAD-VNE). We also provide a simulation environment for the evaluation of its performance according to the virtual network (VN) request load in the system. Finally, we show the suitability of a multi-parameter framework in conjunction with anypath routing in order to have better performance results that guarantee minimum quality in the wireless communications.

The importance of systems that can extract structured information from textual data becomes increasingly pronounced given the ever-increasing volume of text produced on a daily basis. Having a system that can effectively extract such information in an interoperable manner would be an asset for several domains, be it finance, health, or legal. Recent developments in natural language processing led to the production of powerful language models that can, to some degree, mimic human intelligence. Such effectiveness raises a pertinent question: Can these models be leveraged for the extraction of structured information? In this work, we address this question by evaluating the capabilities of two state-of-the-art language models -- GPT-3 and GPT-3.5, commonly known as ChatGPT -- in the extraction of narrative entities, namely events, participants, and temporal expressions. This study is conducted on the Text2Story Lusa dataset, a collection of 119 Portuguese news articles whose annotation framework includes a set of entity structures along with several tags and attribute values. We first select the best prompt template through an ablation study over prompt components that provide varying degrees of information on a subset of documents of the dataset. Subsequently, we use the best templates to evaluate the effectiveness of the models on the remaining documents. The results obtained indicate that GPT models are competitive with out-of-the-box baseline systems, presenting an all-in-one alternative for practitioners with limited resources. By studying the strengths and limitations of these models in the context of information extraction, we offer insights that can guide future improvements and avenues to explore in this field.

However, current UAV positioning solutions typically neglect the impact of Rate Adaptation (RA) algorithms or simplify its effect by considering ideal and non-implementable RA algorithms. This work proposes the Rate Adaptation aware RL-based Flying Gateway Positioning (RARL) algorithm, a positioning method for Flying Gateways that applies Deep Q-Learning, accounting for the dynamic data rate imposed by the underlying RA algorithm. The RARL algorithm aims to maximize the throughput of the flying wireless links serving one or more Flying Access Points, which in turn serve ground terminals. The increasing complexity of recent Wi-Fi amendments is making the use of traditional algorithms and heuristics unfeasible to address the Rate Adaptation (RA) problem. This is due to the large combination of configuration parameters along with the high variability of the wireless channel. Recently, several works have proposed the usage of Reinforcement Learning (RL) techniques to address the problem. However, the proposed solutions lack sufficient technical explanation. Also, the lack of standard frameworks enabling the reproducibility of results and the limited availability of source code, makes the fair comparison with state of the art approaches a challenge. This paper proposes a framework, named RateRL, that integrates state of the art libraries with the well-known Network Simulator 3 (ns-3) to enable the implementation and evaluation of RL-based RA algorithms. To the best of our knowledge, RateRL is the first tool available to assist researchers during the implementation, validation and evaluation phases of RL-based RA algorithms and enable the fair comparison between competing algorithms.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are increasingly used as cost-effective and flexible Wi-Fi Access Points (APs) and cellular Base Stations (BSs) to enhance Quality of Service (QoS). In disaster management scenarios, UAV-based networks provide on-demand wireless connectivity when traditional infrastructures fail. In obstacle-rich environments like urban areas, reliable high-capacity communications links depend on Line-of-Sight (LoS) availability, especially at higher frequencies. Positioning UAVs to consider obstacles and enable LoS communications represents a promising solution that requires further exploration and development. The main contribution of this paper is the Traffic- and Obstacle-aware UAV Positioning Algorithm (TOPA). TOPA takes into account the users' traffic demand and the need for LoS between the UAV and the ground users in the presence of obstacles. Despite the trend towards ubiquitous wireless connectivity, there are scenarios where the communications infrastructure is damaged and wireless coverage is insufficient or does not exist, such as in natural disasters and temporary crowded events. Flying networks, composed of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), have emerged as a flexible and cost-effective solution to provide on-demand wireless connectivity in these scenarios. UAVs have the capability to operate virtually everywhere, and the growing payload capacity makes them suitable platforms to carry wireless communications hardware. The state of the art in the field of flying networks is mainly focused on the optimal positioning of the flying nodes, while the wireless link parameters are configured with default values. On the other hand, current link adaptation algorithms are mainly targeting fixed or low mobility scenarios.
We propose a novel rate adaptation approach for flying networks, named Trajectory Aware Rate Adaptation (TARA), which leverages the knowledge of flying nodes' movement to predict future channel conditions and perform rate adaptation accordingly. Simulation results of 100 different trajectories show that our solution increases throughput by up to 53% and achieves an average improvement of 14%, when compared with conventional rate adaptation algorithms such as Minstrel-HT.

Several research works have applied Reinforcement Learning (RL) algorithms to solve the Rate Adaptation (RA) problem in Wi-Fi networks. The dynamic nature of the radio link requires the algorithms to be responsive to changes in link quality. Delays in the execution of the algorithm may be detrimental to its performance, which in turn may decrease network performance. This aspect has been overlooked in the state of the art. In this paper, we present an analysis of common computational delays in RL-based RA algorithms, and propose a methodology that may be applied to reduce these computational delays and increase the efficiency of this type of algorithms. We apply the proposed methodology to an existing RL-based RA algorithm. Digital twins have been emerging as a hybrid approach that combines the benefits of simulators with the realism of experimental testbeds. The accurate and repeatable set-ups replicating the dynamic conditions of physical environments, enable digital twins of wireless networks to be used to evaluate the performance of next-generation networks. In this paper, we propose the Position-based Machine Learning Propagation Loss Model (P-MLPL), enabling the creation of fast and more precise digital twins of wireless networks in ns-3. Based on network traces collected in an experimental testbed, the P-MLPL model estimates the propagation loss suffered by packets exchanged between a transmitter and a receiver, considering the absolute node's positions and the traffic direction. The P-MLPL model is validated with a test suite. The results show that the P-MLPL model can predict the propagation loss with a median error of 2.5 dB, which corresponds to 0.5x the error of existing models in ns-3. Moreover, ns-3 simulations with the P-MLPL model estimated the throughput with an error up to 2.5 Mbit/s, when compared to the real values measured in the testbed.

Temporal information extraction (TIE) has attracted a great deal of interest over the last two decades, leading to the development of a significant number of datasets. Despite its benefits, having access to a large volume of corpora makes it difficult when it comes to benchmark TIE systems. On the one hand, different datasets have different annotation schemes, thus hindering the comparison between competitors across different corpora. On the other hand, the fact that each corpus is commonly disseminated in a different format requires a considerable engineering effort for a researcher/practitioner to develop parsers for all of them. This constraint forces researchers to select a limited amount of datasets to evaluate their systems which consequently limits the comparability of the systems. Yet another obstacle that hinders the comparability of the TIE systems is the evaluation metric employed. While most research works adopt traditional metrics such as precision, recall, and $F_1$, a few others prefer temporal awareness -- a metric tailored to be more comprehensive on the evaluation of temporal systems. Although the reason for the absence of temporal awareness in the evaluation of most systems is not clear, one of the factors that certainly weights this decision is the necessity to implement the temporal closure algorithm in order to compute temporal awareness, which is not straightforward to implement neither is currently easily available. All in all, these problems have limited the fair comparison between approaches and consequently, the development of temporal extraction systems. To mitigate these problems, we have developed tieval, a Python library that provides a concise interface for importing different corpora and facilitates system evaluation. In this paper, we present the first public release of tieval and highlight its most relevant features.

The efficient resolution of optimization problems is one of the key issues in today's industry. This task relies mainly on classical algorithms that present scalability problems and processing limitations. Quantum computing has emerged to challenge these types of problems. In this paper, we focus on the Metropolis-Hastings quantum algorithm that is based on quantum walks. We use this algorithm to build a quantum software tool called Quantum Metropolis Solver (QMS). We validate QMS with the N-Queen problem to show a potential quantum advantage in an example that can be easily extrapolated to an Artificial Intelligence domain. We carry out different simulations to validate the performance of QMS and its configuration.

The creation of digital twins of experimental testbeds allows the validation of novel wireless networking solutions and the evaluation of their performance in realistic conditions, without the cost, complexity and limited availability of experimental testbeds. Current trace-based simulation approaches for ns-3 enable the repetition and reproduction of the same exact conditions observed in past experiments. However, they are limited by the fact that the simulation setup must exactly match the original experimental setup, including the network topology, the mobility patterns and the number of network nodes. In this paper, we propose the Machine Learning based Propagation Loss (MLPL) module for ns-3. Based on network traces collected in an experimental testbed, the MLPL module estimates the propagation loss as the sum of a deterministic path loss and a stochastic fast-fading loss. The MLPL module is validated with unit tests. Moreover, we test the MLPL module with real network traces, and compare the results obtained with existing propagation loss models in ns-3 and real experimental results. The results obtained show that the MLPL module can accurately predict the propagation loss observed in a real environment and reproduce the experimental conditions of a given testbed, enabling the creation of digital twins of wireless network environments in ns-3.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) acting as Flying Access Points (FAPs) are being used to provide on-demand wireless connectivity in extreme scenarios. Despite ongoing research, the optimization of UAVs' positions according to dynamic users' traffic demands remains challenging. We propose the Traffic-aware UAV Placement Algorithm (TUPA), which positions a UAV acting as FAP according to the users' traffic demands, in order to maximize the network utility. Using a DRL approach enables the FAP to autonomously learn and adapt to dynamic conditions and requirements of networking scenarios. Moreover, the proposed DRL methodology allows TUPA to generalize knowledge acquired during training to unknown combinations of users' positions and traffic demands, with no additional training. TUPA is trained and evaluated using network simulator ns-3 and ns3-gym framework. The results demonstrate that TUPA increases the network utility, compared to baseline solutions, increasing the average network utility up to 4x in scenarios with heterogeneous traffic demands.

The increasing complexity of recent Wi-Fi amendments is making optimal Rate Adaptation (RA) a challenge. The use of classic algorithms or heuristic models to address RA is becoming unfeasible due to the large combination of configuration parameters along with the variability of the wireless channel. Machine Learning-based solutions have been proposed in the state of art, to deal with this complexity. However, they typically use complex models and their implementation in real scenarios is difficult. We propose a simple Deep Reinforcement Learning approach for the automatic RA in Wi-Fi networks, named Data-driven Algorithm for Rate Adaptation (DARA). DARA is standard-compliant. It dynamically adjusts the Wi-Fi Modulation and Coding Scheme (MCS) solely based on the observation of the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) of the received frames at the transmitter. Our simulation results show that DARA achieves up to 15\% higher throughput when compared with Minstrel High Throughput (HT) and equals the performance of the Ideal Wi-Fi RA algorithm.

This has led to the concept of flying networks composed of UAVs as a flexible and agile solution to provide on-demand wireless connectivity anytime, anywhere. However, state of the art works have been focused on optimizing the placement of the access network providing connectivity to ground users, overlooking the backhaul network design. In order to improve the overall Quality of Service (QoS) offered to ground users, the placement of Flying Gateways (FGWs) and the size of the queues configured in the UAVs need to be carefully defined to meet strict performance requirements. The main contribution of this article is a traffic-aware gateway placement and queue management (GPQM) algorithm for flying networks. GPQM takes advantage of knowing in advance the positions of the UAVs and their traffic demand to determine the FGW position and the queue size of the UAVs, in order to maximize the aggregate throughput and provide stochastic delay guarantees. GPQM is evaluated by means of ns-3 simulations, considering a realistic wireless channel model. The results demonstrate significant gains in the QoS offered when GPQM is used.

Developments in Genome-Wide Association Studies have led to the increasing notion that future healthcare techniques will be personalized to the patient, by relying on genetic tests to determine the risk of develo** a disease. To this end, the detection of gene interactions that cause complex diseases constitutes an important application. Similarly to many applications in this field, extensive data sets containing genetic information for a series of patients are used (such as Single-Nucleotide Polymorphisms), leading to high computational complexity and memory utilization, thus constituting a major challenge when targeting high-performance execution in modern computing systems. To close this gap, this work proposes several novel approaches for the detection of three-way gene interactions in modern CPUs and GPUs, making use of different optimizations to fully exploit the target architectures. Crucial insights from the Cache-Aware Roofline Model are used to ensure the suitability of the applications to the computing devices. An extensive study of the architectural features of 13 CPU and GPU devices from all main vendors is also presented, allowing to understand the features relevant to obtain high-performance in this bioinformatics domain. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to perform such evaluation for epistasis detection. The proposed approaches are able to surpass the performance of state-of-the-art works in the tested platforms, achieving an average speedup of 3.9$\times$ (7.3$\times$ on CPUs and 2.8$\times$ on GPUs) and maximum speedup of 10.6$\times$ on Intel UHD P630 GPU.

Network slicing emerged in 5G networks as a key component to enable the use of multiple services with different performance requirements on top of a shared physical network infrastructure. A major challenge lies on ensuring wireless coverage and enough communications resources to meet the target Quality of Service (QoS) levels demanded by these services, including throughput and delay guarantees. The challenge is exacerbated in temporary events, such as disaster management scenarios and outdoor festivities, where the existing wireless infrastructures may collapse, fail to provide sufficient wireless coverage, or lack the required communications resources. Flying networks, composed of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), emerged as a solution to provide on-demand wireless coverage and communications resources anywhere, anytime. However, existing solutions mostly rely on best-effort networks. The main contribution of this paper is SLICER, an algorithm enabling the placement and allocation of communications resources in slicing-aware flying networks. The evaluation carried out by means of ns-3 simulations shows SLICER can meet the targeted QoS levels, while using the minimum amount of communications resources.

Predicting the 3D structure of proteins is one of the most important problems in current biochemical research. In this article, we explain how to combine recent deep learning advances with the well known technique of quantum walks applied to a Metropolis algorithm. The result, QFold, is a fully scalable hybrid quantum algorithm that, in contrast to previous quantum approaches, does not require a lattice model simplification and instead relies on the much more realistic assumption of parameterization in terms of torsion angles of the amino acids. We compare it with its classical analog for different annealing schedules and find a polynomial quantum advantage, and implement a minimal realization of the quantum Metropolis in the IBMQ Casablanca quantum system.

5G is designed to be an essential enabler and a leading infrastructure provider in the communication technology industry by supporting the demand for the growing data traffic and a variety of services with distinct requirements. The use of deep learning and computer vision tools has the means to increase the environmental awareness of the network with information from visual data. Information extracted via computer vision tools such as user position, movement direction, and speed can be promptly available for the network. However, the network must have a mechanism to match the identity of a user in both visual and radio systems. This mechanism is absent in the present literature. Therefore, we propose a framework to match the information from both visual and radio domains. This is an essential step to practical applications of computer vision tools in communications. We detail the proposed framework training and deployment phases for a presented setup. We carried out practical experiments using data collected in different types of environments. The work compares the use of Deep Neural Network and Random Forest classifiers and shows that the former performed better across all experiments, achieving classification accuracy greater than 99%.

The ability to operate anywhere, anytime, as well as their capability to hover and carry cargo on board make Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) suitable platforms to act as Flying Gateways (FGWs) to the Internet. The problem is the optimal placement of the FGWs within the flying network, such that the Quality of Service (QoS) offered is maximized. The literature has been focused on optimizing the placement of the Flying Access Points (FAPs), which establish high-capacity small cells to serve the users on the ground, overlooking the backhaul network design, including the FGW placement. The FGW placement problem is exacerbated in highly dynamic flying networks, where the dynamic traffic demand and the movements of the users may induce frequent changes in the placement of the FAPs.
The main contribution of this paper is a fast gateway placement (F-GWP) algorithm for flying networks that determines the optimal position of a FGW. With F-GWP, backhaul communications paths with high enough capacity are established between the FAPs and the FGW, in order to accommodate the traffic demand of the users on the ground. Simulation and experimental results show F-GWP is two orders of magnitude faster than its state of the art counterpart, while ensuring the same flying network performance.

The ability to move and hover has made rotary-wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) suitable platforms to act as Flying Communications Relays (FCR), aiming at providing on-demand, temporary wireless connectivity when there is no network infrastructure available or a need to reinforce the capacity of existing networks. However, since UAVs rely on their on-board batteries, which can be drained quickly, they typically need to land frequently for recharging or replacing them, limiting their endurance and the flying network availability. The problem is exacerbated when a single FCR UAV is used. The FCR UAV energy is used for two main tasks: communications and propulsion. The literature has been focused on optimizing both the flying network performance and energy-efficiency from the communications point of view, overlooking the energy spent for the UAV propulsion. Yet, the energy spent for communications is typically negligible when compared with the energy spent for the UAV propulsion.
In this article we propose Energy-aware RElay Positioning (EREP), an algorithm for positioning the FCR taking into account the energy spent for the UAV propulsion. Building upon the conclusion that hovering is not the most energy-efficient state, EREP defines the trajectory and speed that minimize the energy spent by the FCR UAV on propulsion, without compromising in practice the Quality of Service offered by the flying network. The EREP algorithm is evaluated using simulations. The obtained results show gains up to 26% in the FCR UAV endurance for negligible throughput and delay degradation.

Aerial networks, composed of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) acting as Wi-Fi access points or cellular base stations, are emerging as an interesting solution to provide on-demand wireless connectivity to users, when there is no network infrastructure available, or to enhance the network capacity. This article proposes a traffic-aware topology control solution for aerial networks that holistically combines the placement of UAVs with a predictive and centralized routing protocol. The synergy created by the combination of the UAV placement and routing solutions allows the aerial network to seamlessly update its topology according to the users' traffic demand, whilst minimizing the disruption caused by the movement of the UAVs. As a result, the Quality of Service (QoS) provided to the users is improved. The components of the proposed solution are described and evaluated individually in this article by means of simulation and an experimental testbed. The results show that all the components improve the QoS provided to the users when compared to the corresponding baseline solutions.

Event extraction (EE) is one of the core information extraction tasks, whose purpose is to automatically identify and extract information about incidents and their actors from texts. This may be beneficial to several domains such as knowledge bases, question answering, information retrieval and summarization tasks, to name a few. The problem of extracting event information from texts is longstanding and usually relies on elaborately designed lexical and syntactic features, which, however, take a large amount of human effort and lack generalization. More recently, deep neural network approaches have been adopted as a means to learn underlying features automatically. However, existing networks do not make full use of syntactic features, which play a fundamental role in capturing very long-range dependencies. Also, most approaches extract each argument of an event separately without considering associations between arguments which ultimately leads to low efficiency, especially in sentences with multiple events. To address the two above-referred problems, we propose a novel joint event extraction framework that aims to extract multiple event triggers and arguments simultaneously by introducing shortest dependency path (SDP) in the dependency graph. We do this by eliminating irrelevant words in the sentence, thus capturing long-range dependencies. Also, an attention-based graph convolutional network is proposed, to carry syntactically related information along the shortest paths between argument candidates that captures and aggregates the latent associations between arguments; a problem that has been overlooked by most of the literature. Our results show a substantial improvement over state-of-the-art methods.

In wireless networking R&D we typically depend on simulation and experimentation to evaluate and validate new networking solutions. While simulations allow full control over the scenario conditions, real-world experiments are influenced by external random phenomena and may produce hardly repeatable and reproducible results, impacting the validation of the solution under evaluation. Previously, we have proposed the Trace-based Simulation (TS) approach to address the problem. TS uses traces of radio link quality and position of nodes to accurately reproduce past experiments in ns-3. Yet, in its current version, the TS approach is not compatible with scenarios where the radio spectrum is shared with concurrent networks, as it does not reproduce their channel occupancy. In this paper, we introduce the InterferencePropagationLossModel and a modified MacLow to allow reproducing the channel occupancy experienced in past experiments. To validate the proposed models, the network throughput was measured in different experiments performed in the w-iLab.t testbed, controlling the channel occupancy introduced by concurrent networks. The experimental results were then compared with the network throughput achieved using the improved TS approach, the legacy TS approach, and pure simulation, validating the new proposed models and confirming their relevance to reproduce experiments previously executed in real environments.

The growing demand for broadband communications anytime, anywhere has paved the way to the usage of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for providing Internet access in areas without network infrastructure and enhancing the performance of existing networks. However, the usage of Flying Multi-hop Networks (FMNs) in such scenarios brings up significant challenges concerning network routing, in order to permanently provide the Quality of Service expected by the users. The problem is exacerbated in crowded events, where the FMN may be formed by many UAVs to address the traffic demand, causing inter-flow interference within the FMN. Typically, estimating inter-flow interference is not straightforward and requires the exchange of probe packets, thus increasing network overhead. The main contribution of this paper is an inter-flow interference-aware routing metric, named I2R, designed for centralized routing in FMNs with controllable topology. I2R does not require any control packets and enables the configuration of paths with minimal Euclidean distance formed by UAVs with the lowest number of neighbors in carrier-sense range, thus minimizing inter-flow interference in the FMN. Simulation results show the I2R superior performance, with significant gains in terms of throughput and end-to-end delay, when compared with state of the art routing metrics.

The inefficiency of the fundamental access method of the IEEEE 802.11 standard is a well-known problem in scenarios where multiple long range and faulty links compete for the shared medium. The alternatives found in the literature are mostly focused on point-to-point and rarely on long range links. Currently, there is no solution optimized for maritime scenarios, where the point-to-multipoint links can reach several tens of kilometers, while suffering from degradation due to the harsh environment. This paper presents a novel MAC protocol that uses explicit signalling messages to control access to the medium by a central node. In this solution, this role is played by an Access Point that sends token messages addressed to each associated station, which is granted exclusive access to the medium and assigned a number of credits; after sending its own packets (if any), a station must release control of the token. Simulation results show that this mechanism has superior performance in point-to-multipoint, long range and faulty links, allowing a fairly and more efficient usage of the shared resources among all nodes.

To properly validate wireless networking solutions we depend on experimentation. Simulation very often produces less accurate results due to the use of models that are simplifications of the real phenomena they try to model. Networking experimentation may offer limited repeatability and reproducibility. Being influenced by external random phenomena such as noise, interference, and multipath, real experiments are hardly repeatable. In addition, they are difficult to reproduce due to testbed operational constraints and availability. Without repeatability and reproducibility, the validation of the networking solution under evaluation is questionable. In this paper, we show how the Trace-based Simulation (TS) approach can be used to accurately repeat and reproduce real experiments and, consequently, introduce a paradigm shift when it comes to the evaluation of wireless networking solutions. We present an extensive evaluation of the TS approach using the Fed4FIRE+ w-iLab.2 testbed. This paper uses robust statistics and curvelet transform to learn a general-purpose no-reference (NR) image quality assessment (IQA) model. The new approach, here called M1, competes with the Curvelet Quality Assessment proposed in 2014 (Curvelet2014). The central idea is to use descriptors based on robust statistics to extract features and predict the human opinion about degraded images. To show the consistency of the method the model is tested with 3 different datasets, LIVE IQA, TID2013 and CSIQ. To test evaluation, it is used the Wilcoxon test to verify the statistical significance of results and promote an accurate comparison between new model M1 and Curvelet2014. The results show a gain when robust statistics are used as descriptor.

Due to recent technological developments, Machine Learning (ML), a subfield of Artificial Intelligence (AI), has been successfully used to process and extract knowledge from a variety of complex problems. However, a thorough ML approach is complex and highly dependent on the problem at hand. Additionally, implementing the logic required to execute the experiments is no small nor trivial deed, consequentially increasing the probability of faulty code which can compromise the results. Propheticus is a data-driven framework which results of the need for a tool that abstracts some of the inherent complexity of ML, whilst being easy to understand and use, as well as to adapt and expand to assist the user's specific needs. Propheticus systematizes and enforces various complex concepts of an ML experiment workflow, taking into account the nature of both the problem and the data. It contains functionalities to execute all the different tasks, from data preprocessing, to results analysis and comparison. Notwithstanding, it can be fairly easily adapted to different problems due to its flexible architecture, and customized as needed to address the user's needs.

The fitness landscape metaphor plays a central role on the modeling of optimizing principles in many research fields, ranging from evolutionary biology, where it was first introduced, to management research. Here we consider the ensemble of trajectories of the imitative learning search, in which agents exchange information on their fitness and imitate the fittest agent in the population aiming at reaching the global maximum of the fitness landscape. We assess the degree to which the starting and ending points determine the learning trajectories using two measures, namely, the predictability that yields the probability that two randomly chosen trajectories are the same, and the mean path divergence that gauges the dissimilarity between two learning trajectories. We find that the predictability is greater in rugged landscapes than in smooth ones. The mean path divergence, however, is strongly affected by the search parameters -- population size and imitation propensity -- that obliterate the influence of the underlying landscape. The learning trajectories become more deterministic, in the sense that there are fewer distinct trajectories and those trajectories are more similar to each other, with increasing population size and imitation propensity. In addition, we find that the roughness of the learning trajectories, which measures the deviation from additivity of the fitness function, is always greater than the roughness estimated over the entire fitness landscape.

The increasing trend in wireless Internet access has been boosted by IEEE 802.11. However, the application scenarios are still limited by its short radio range. Stub Wireless Multi-hop Networks (WMNs) are a robust, flexible, and cost-effective solution to the problem. Yet, typically they are formed by single radio mesh nodes and suffer from hidden node, unfairness, and scalability problems.
We propose a simple multi-radio, multi-channel WMN solution, named Wi-Fi network Infrastructure eXtension - Dual-Radio (WiFIX-DR), to overcome these problems. WiFIX-DR reuses IEEE 802.11 built-in mechanisms and beacons to form a Stub WMN as a set of self-configurable interconnected Basic Service Sets (BSSs). Experimental results show the improved scalability enabled by the proposed solution when compared to single-radio WMNs.
