Cellular user positioning is a promising service provided by Fifth Generation New Radio (5G NR) networks. Besides, Machine Learning (ML) techniques are foreseen to become an integrated part of 5G NR systems improving radio performance and reducing complexity. In this paper, we investigate ML techniques for positioning using 5G NR fingerprints consisting of uplink channel estimates from the physical layer channel. We show that it is possible to use Sounding Reference Signals (SRS) channel fingerprints to provide sufficient data to infer user position. Furthermore, we show that small fully-connected moderately Deep Neural Networks, even when applied to very sparse SRS data, can achieve successful outdoor user positioning with meter-level accuracy in a commercial 5G environment.

Abstract:
The multi-armed bandit (MAB) problem models a decision-maker that optimizes its actions based on current and acquired new knowledge to maximize its reward. This type of online decision is prominent in many procedures of Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) and MAB has previously been used to investigate, e.g., what mental commands to use to optimize BCI performance. However, MAB optimization in the co…

However, MAB optimization in the context of BCI is still relatively unexplored, even though it has the potential to improve BCI performance during both calibration and real-time implementation. Therefore, this review aims to further introduce MABs to the BCI community. The review includes a background on MAB problems and standard solution methods, and interpretations related to BCI systems. Moreover, it includes state-of-the-art concepts of MAB in BCI and suggestions for future research.

The energy-optimal scheme is found for communicating one bit over a memoryless Gaussian channel with an ideal feedback channel. It is assumed that the channel is allowed to be used at most N times before decoding. The optimal coding/decoding strategy is derived by dynamic programming. It is found that feedback gives a significant performance gain and that the optimal strategies are discontinuous. It is also shown that most of the performance increase can be obtained even with a one-bit feedback channel. The optimal scheme is compared with the strategy by Kailath-Schalkwijk and is found to be significantly more effective. For the case of a diagonal MIMO channel where measurement noise variances are equal along the sub channels we also show that the problem can be reduced to the previous case of transmitting one bit over a scalar feedback channel.

Abstract:
The problem of joint source-channel coding is considered for a stationary remote (noisy) Gaussian source and a Gaussian channel. The encoder and decoder are assumed to be causal and their combined operations are subject to a delay constraint. The problem of joint source-channel coding is considered for a stationary remote (noisy) Gaussian source and a Gaussian channel. The encoder and decoder are assumed to be causal and their combined operations are subject to a delay constraint. It is shown that, under the mean-square error distortion metric, an optimal encoder-decoder pair from the linear and time-invariant (LTI) class can be found by minimization of a convex functional and a spectral factorization. The functional to be minimized is the sum of the well-known cost in a corresponding Wiener filter problem and a new term, which is induced by the channel noise and whose coefficient is the inverse of the channel's signal-to-noise ratio. This result is shown to also hold in the case of vector-valued signals, assuming parallel additive white Gaussian noise channels. It is also shown that optimal LTI encoders and decoders generally require infinite memory, which implies that approximations are necessary. A numerical example is provided, which compares the performance to the lower bound provided by rate-distortion theory.
