Open Science is a paradigm in which scientific data, procedures, tools and results are shared transparently and reused by society as a whole. The initiative known as the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) is an effort in Europe to provide an open, trusted, virtual and federated computing environment to execute scientific applications, and to store, share and re-use research data across borders and scientific disciplines. Additionally, scientific services are becoming increasingly data-intensive, not only in terms of computationally intensive tasks but also in terms of storage resources. Computing paradigms such as High Performance Computing (HPC) and Cloud Computing are applied to e-science applications to meet these demands. However, adapting applications and services to these paradigms is not a trivial task, commonly requiring a deep knowledge of the underlying technologies, which often constitutes a barrier for its uptake by scientists in general. In this context, EOSC-SYNERGY, a collaborative project involving more than 20 institutions from eight European countries pooling their knowledge and experience to enhance EOSC's capabilities and capacities, aims to bring EOSC closer to the scientific communities. This article provides a summary analysis of the adaptations made in the ten thematic services of EOSC-SYNERGY to embrace this paradigm. These services are grouped into four categories: Earth Observation, Environment, Biomedicine, and Astrophysics. The analysis will lead to the identification of commonalities, best practices and common requirements, regardless of the thematic area of the service. Experience gained from the thematic services could be transferred to new services for the adoption of the EOSC ecosystem framework.

The project aimed to define the rules and develop a technological solution to automatically identify a set of attributes within free-text clinical records written in Portuguese. The first application developed and implemented on this basis was a structured summary of a patient's clinical history, including previous diagnoses and procedures, usual medication, and relevant characteristics or conditions for clinical decisions, such as allergies, being under anticoagulant therapy, etc. The project's goal was achieved by a multidisciplinary team that included clinicians, epidemiologists, computational linguists, machine learning researchers and software engineers, bringing together the expertise and perspectives of a public hospital, the university and the private sector. Relevant benefits to users and patients are related with facilitated access to the patient's history, which translates into exhaustiveness in apprehending the patient's clinical past and efficiency due to time saving.

OSLO: On-the-Sphere Learning for Omnidirectional images and its application to 360-degree image compression

State-of-the-art 2D image compression schemes rely on the power of convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Although CNNs offer promising perspectives for 2D image compression, extending such models to omnidirectional images is not straightforward. First, omnidirectional images have specific spatial and statistical properties that can not be fully captured by current CNN models. Second, basic mathematical operations composing a CNN architecture, e.g., translation and sampling, are not well-defined on the sphere. In this paper, we study the learning of representation models for omnidirectional images and propose to use the properties of HEALPix uniform sampling of the sphere to redefine the mathematical tools used in deep learning models for omnidirectional images. In particular, we: i) propose the definition of a new convolution operation on the sphere that keeps the high expressiveness and the low complexity of a classical 2D convolution; ii) adapt standard CNN techniques such as stride, iterative aggregation, and pixel shuffling to the spherical domain; and then iii) apply our new framework to the task of omnidirectional image compression. Our experiments show that our proposed on-the-sphere solution leads to a better compression gain that can save 13.7% of the bit rate compared to similar learned models applied to equirectangular images. Also, compared to learning models based on graph convolutional networks, our solution supports more expressive filters that can preserve high frequencies and provide a better perceptual quality of the compressed images. Such results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed framework, which opens new research venues for other omnidirectional vision tasks to be effectively implemented on the sphere manifold.

We propose a new method for the visual quality assessment of 360-degree (omnidirectional) videos. The proposed method is based on computing multiple spatio-temporal objective quality features on viewports extracted from 360-degree videos. A new model is learnt to properly combine these features into a metric that closely matches subjective quality scores. The main motivations for the proposed approach are that: 1) quality metrics computed on viewports better captures the user experience than metrics computed on the projection domain; 2) the use of viewports easily supports different projection methods being used in current 360-degree video systems; and 3) no individual objective image quality metric always performs the best for all types of visual distortions, while a learned combination of them is able to adapt to different conditions. Experimental results, based on both the largest available 360-degree videos quality dataset and a cross-dataset validation, demonstrate that the proposed metric outperforms state-of-the-art 360-degree and 2D video quality metrics.

Omnidirectional (or 360-degree) images and videos are emergent signals in many areas such as robotics and virtual/augmented reality. In particular, for virtual reality, they allow an immersive experience in which the user is provided with a 360-degree field of view and can navigate throughout a scene, e.g., through the use of Head Mounted Displays. Since it represents the full 360-degree field of view from one point of the scene, omnidirectional content is naturally represented as spherical visual signals. Current approaches for capturing, processing, delivering, and displaying 360-degree content, however, present many open technical challenges and introduce several types of distortions in these visual signals. Some of the distortions are specific to the nature of 360-degree images, and often different from those encountered in the classical image communication framework. This paper provides a first comprehensive review of the most common visual distortions that alter 360-degree signals undergoing state of the art processing in common applications. While their impact on viewers' visual perception and on the immersive experience at large is still unknown ---thus, it stays an open research topic--- this review serves the purpose of identifying the main causes of visual distortions in the end-to-end 360-degree content distribution pipeline. It is essential as a basis for benchmarking different processing techniques, allowing the effective design of new algorithms and applications. It is also necessary to the deployment of proper psychovisual studies to characterise the human perception of these new images in interactive and immersive applications.

This is an opinion paper regarding a proposal of a model for a Ecosystemm Governance. In the globalized world the importance of Information Systems (IS) and Information Technology (IT) become increasingly relevant regarding the requirements imposed by competition. Both the knowledge of the business as the rapid flow of information are fundamental for a enterprise decision making. Whereas the basic definition of IT = hardware + software, i.e., tools that has been used to create, store and disseminate data and information in the creation of knowledge, and IS = IT + People + procedures that collect, process and disseminate the information to support decision making, coordination, control, analysis and visualization in the organization [01], it makes implicit the understanding of IS is essential to create competitive companies, to manage global corporations and provide customers with products and services of value. In this work we are correlating IS with the governance of management of an ecosystem. Yet, as IT is redefining the foundations of business, then the customer service, operations, strategies of product marketing and its distribution and even the knowledge management (KM) depends very much, or sometimes even completely, on the IS. The IT and its costs have become a part of day-to-day business [02]. In order to meet this complexity of business needs, today is not possible to disregard the IT and its available resources, which makes very dificult to draw up IS. Therefore, the perspective view of the Sociotehcnical Aspects of an IS are directly concerned with governance and the model proposed regarding an ecosystem. Finally, whereas the summary above, the main objective of this opinion paper is to propose the guidelines for a Sociotechnical Management Model of Governance for an Ecosystem.
