This paper investigates a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided wideband massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system with low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). Frequency-selective Rician fading channels are considered, and the OFDM data transmission process is presented in time domain. This paper derives the closed-form approximate expression of the uplink achievable rate, based on which the asymptotic system performance is analyzed when the number of the antennas at the base station and the number of reflecting elements at the RIS grow to infinity. Besides, the power scaling laws of the considered system are revealed to provide energy-saving insights. Furthermore, this paper proposes a gradient ascent-based algorithm to design the phase shifts of the RIS for maximizing the minimum user rate. Finally, numerical results are presented to verify the correctness of analytical conclusions and draw insights.

In recent years, advances in immersive multimedia technologies, such as extended reality (XR) technologies, have led to more realistic and user-friendly devices. However, these devices are often bulky and uncomfortable, still requiring tether connectivity for demanding applications. The deployment of the fifth generation of telecommunications technologies (5G) has set the basis for XR offloading solutions with the goal of enabling lighter and fully wearable XR devices. In this paper, we present a traffic dataset for two demanding XR offloading scenarios that are complementary to those available in the current state of the art, captured using a fully developed end-to-end XR offloading solution. We also propose a set of accurate traffic models for the proposed scenarios based on the captured data, accompanied by a simple and consistent method to generate synthetic data from the fitted models. Finally, using an open-source 5G radio access network (RAN) emulator, we validate the models both at the application and resource allocation layers. Overall, this work aims to provide a valuable contribution to the field with data and tools for designing, testing, improving, and extending XR offloading solutions in academia and industry.

This letter focuses on the pilot contamination problem in the uplink and downlink of cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output networks with different degrees of cooperation between access points. The optimum minimum mean square error processing can take advantage of large-scale fading coefficients for canceling the interference of pilot-sharing user-equipments and thus achieves asymptotically unbounded capacity. However, it is computationally demanding and can only be implemented in a fully centralized network. Here, sub-optimal schemes are derived that provide unbounded capacity with linear-growing complexity and using only local channel estimates but global channel statistics. This makes them suited for both centralized and distributed networks. In this latter case, the best performance is achieved with a generalized maximum ratio combiner that maximizes a capacity bound based on channel statistics only.

The Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) constitutes one of the prominent technologies for the next 6-th Generation (6G) of wireless communications. It is envisioned to enhance signal coverage in cases where obstacles block the direct communication from Base Stations (BSs), and when high carrier frequencies are used that are sensitive to attenuation losses. In the literature, the exploitation of RISs is exclusively based on traditional coherent demodulation, which necessitates the availability of Channel State Information (CSI). Given the CSI, a multi-antenna BS or a dedicated controller computes the pre/post spatial coders and the RIS configuration. The latter tasks require significant amount of time and resources, which may not be affordable when the channel is time-varying or the CSI is not accurate enough. In this paper, we consider the uplink between a single-antenna user and a multi-antenna BS and present a novel RIS-empowered Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) communication system based on the differential phase shift keying, which is suitable for high noise and/or mobility scenarios. Considering both an idealistic and a realistic channel model, analytical expressions for the Signal-to-Interference and Noise Ratio (SINR) and the Symbol Error Probability (SEP) of the proposed non-coherent RIS-empowered system are presented. Our extensive computer simulation results verify the accuracy of the presented analysis and showcase the proposed system's performance and superiority over coherent demodulation in different mobility and spatial correlation scenarios.

Various types of communication networks are constantly emerging to improve the connectivity services and facilitate the interconnection of various types of devices. This involves the development of several technologies, such as device-to-device communications, wireless sensor networks and vehicular communications. The various services provided have heterogeneous requirements on the quality metrics such as throughput, end-to-end latency and jitter. Furthermore, different network technologies have inherently heterogeneous restrictions on resources, e.g., power, interference management requirements, computational capabilities, etc. As a result, different network operations such as spectrum management, routing, power control and offloading need to be performed differently. Mathematical optimization techniques have always been at the heart of such design problems to formulate and propose computationally efficient solution algorithms. One of the existing powerful techniques of mathematical optimization is Benders decomposition (BD), which is the focus of this article. Here, we briefly review different BD variants that have been applied in various existing network types and different design problems. These main variants are the classical, the combinatorial, the multi-stage, and the generalized BD. We discuss compelling BD applications for various network types including heterogeneous cellular networks, infrastructure wired wide area networks, smart grids, wireless sensor networks, and wireless local area networks. Mainly, our goal is to assist the readers in refining the motivation, problem formulation, and methodology of this powerful optimization technique in the context of future networks. We also discuss the BD challenges and the prospective ways these can be addressed when applied to communication networks' design problems.

Visible-light communication (VLC) has emerged as a prominent technology to address the radio spectrum shortage. It is characterized by the unlicensed and unexploited high bandwidth, and provides the system with cost-effective advantages because of the dual-use of light bulbs for illumination and communication and the low complexity design. It is considered to be utilized in various telecommunication systems, including 5G, and represents the key technology for light-fidelity. To this end, VLC has to be integrated into the existing telecommunication networks. Therefore, its analysis as a network technology is momentous. In this article, we consider the feasibility of using VLC as a network technology and discuss the challenges related to the implementation of a VLC-based network, as well as the integration of VLC into existing conventional networks and its inclusion in standards.
