We explore the potential of a simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) to enhance the performance of wireless surveillance systems. The STAR-RIS is deployed between a full-duplex (FD) multi-antenna legitimate eavesdropper (E) and a suspicious communication pair. It reflects the suspicious signal towards the suspicious receiver (SR), while simultaneously transmitting the same signal to E for interception purposes. Additionally, it enables the forwarding of a jamming signal from E to SR, which is located on the back side of the STAR-RIS. To enhance the eavesdrop** non-outage probability, we formulate a non-convex joint optimization problem to design the beamforming vectors at E and reflection/transmission phase shift matrices at the STAR-RIS. We adopt the block coordinate descent (BCD) algorithm and propose an approach, mainly based on semi-definite relaxation (SDR) and successive convex approximation (SCA), for solving the resulting decoupled sub-problems. Finally, we compare the performance of the proposed design against low-complexity zero-forcing (ZF)-based beamforming designs.

This letter investigates an intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS)-enhanced network from spectral efficiency enhancement point of view for downlink multi-user (MU) multi-input-single-output systems (MISO). In contrast to previous works which mainly focused on alternative optimization methods, we investigate the non-convex joint optimization problem of the active transmit beamforming matrix at the base station together with the passive phase shift matrix at the IRS by utilizing two deep reinforcement learning frameworks, i. e., deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) and twin delayed DDPG (TD3). Simulation results reveal that the neural networks in the latter scheme perform generally more satisfactorily in various situations.

Cellular communication is a widely used technology in the world where the coverage area is divided into multiple cells. Interference is one of the most important challenges in cellular networks which causes problems by reducing the quality of the service. Cell-Free (CF) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is a novel technolgy in which a large number of distributed access points (APs) are concurrently serving a small number of user equipment (UE). CF network can be an alternative technology to cellular networks for reducing interference. A challenging task in a CF network is scalability, where although the number of UEs tends to infinity, the computational complexity must remain finite in each AP or UE. In this paper, we provide two architectures of Dense fully connected neural network (Dense_Net) and 1D convolution neural network (Conv_Net) to be implemented in different cases in terms of the number of antennas in each AP/UE and the method for the combining vector. The Dense_Net outperforms the Conv_Net in all the cases. For instance, in the first case it has a %62.87 improvement in terms of loss. The results show that our proposed method performs better in terms of obtaining optimal values for spectral efficiency (SE).

High demand of data rate in the next generation of wireless communication could be ensured by Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) approach in the millimetre-wave (mmW) frequency band. Decreasing the interference on the other users while maintaining the bit rate via joint power allocation and beamforming is mandatory to guarantee the high demand of bit-rate. Furthermore, mmW frequency bands dictates the hybrid structure for beamforming because of the trade-off in implementation and performance, simultaneously. In this paper, joint power allocation and hybrid beamforming of mmW-NOMA systems is brought up via recent advances in machine learning and control theory approaches called Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL). Actor-critic phenomena is exploited to measure the immediate reward and providing the new action to maximize the overall Q-value of the network. Additionally, to improve the stability of the approach, we have utilized Soft Actor-Critic (SAC) approach where overall reward and action entropy is maximized, simultaneously. The immediate reward has been defined based on the soft weighted summation of the rate of all the users. The soft weighting is based on the achieved rate and allocated power of each user. Furthermore, the channel responses between the users and base station (BS) is defined as the state of environment, while action space is involved of the digital and analog beamforming weights and allocated power to each user. The simulation results represent the superiority of the proposed approach rather than the Time-Division Multiple Access (TDMA) and Non-Line of Sight (NLOS)-NOMA in terms of sum-rate of the users. It's outperformance is caused by the joint optimization and independency of the proposed approach to the channel responses.

The high demand for data rate in the next generation of wireless communication could be ensured by Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) approach in the millimetre-wave (mmW) frequency band. Joint power allocation and beamforming of mmW-NOMA systems is mandatory which could be met by optimization approaches. To this end, we have exploited Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) approach due to policy generation leading to an optimized sum-rate of users. Actor-critic phenomena are utilized to measure the immediate reward and provide the new action to maximize the overall Q-value of the network. The immediate reward has been defined based on the summation of the rate of two users regarding the minimum guaranteed rate for each user and the sum of consumed power as the constraints. The simulation results represent the superiority of the proposed approach rather than the Time-Division Multiple Access (TDMA) and another NOMA optimized strategy in terms of sum-rate of users.

In this paper, the robust distributed relay beamforming problem is solved using the worst case approach, where the problem solution has been involved because of the effect of uncertainty of channel knowledge on the quality of service (QoS) constraints. It is shown that the original robust design, which is a non-convex semi-infinite problem (SIP), can be relaxed and reformed to a semi-definite problem (SDP). Monte-Carlo simulations are presented to verify the performance improvement of our proposed robust problem over existing robust and non-robust problems in terms of transmit power and symbol error probability.

Motivated by the fact that full diversity order is achieved using the "best-relay" selection technique, we consider opportunistic amplify-and-forward and decode-and-forward relaying systems. We focus on the outage probability of such a systems and then derive closed-form expressions for the outage probability of these systems over independent but non-identical imperfect Log-normal fading channels. We consider the error of channel estimation as a Gaussian random variable. As a result the estimated channels distribution are not Log-normal either as would be in the case of the Rayleigh fading channels. This is exactly the reason why our simulation results do not exactly matched with analytical results. However, this difference is negligible for a wide variety of situations.

In this chapter, the authors present the performance of multi-antenna selective combining decode-and-forward (SC-DF) relay networks over independent and identically distributed (i.i.d) Nakagami-m fading channels. The outage probability, moment generation function, symbol error probability and average channel capacity are derived in closed-form using the Signal-to-Noise-Ratio (SNR) statistical characteristics. After that, the authors formulate the outage probability problem, optimize it with an approximated problem, and then solve it analytically. Finally, for comparison with analytical formulas, the authors perform some Monte-Carlo simulations.
