Workplace communications around the world were drastically altered by Covid-19, related work-from-home orders, and the rise of remote work. To understand these shifts, we analyzed aggregated, anonymized metadata from over 360 billion emails within 4,361 organizations worldwide. By comparing month-to-month and year-over-year metrics, we examined changes in network community structures over 24 months before and after Covid-19. We also examined shifts across multiple communication media (email, instant messages, video calls, and calendaring software) within a single global organization, and compared them to communications shifts that were driven by changes in formal organizational structure. We found that, in 2020, organizations around the world became more siloed than in 2019, evidenced by increased modularity. This shift was concurrent with decreased stability within silos. Collectively, our analyses indicate that following the onset of Covid-19, employees began to shift more dynamically between subcommunities (teams, workgroups or functional areas). At the same time, once in a subcommunity, they limited their communication to other members of that community. We term these network changes dynamic silos. We provide initial insights into the meaning and implications of dynamic silos for the future of work.

Feature selection, as a critical pre-processing step for machine learning, aims at determining representative predictors from a high-dimensional feature space dataset to improve the prediction accuracy. However, the increase in feature space dimensionality, comparing to the number of observations, poses a severe challenge to many existing feature selection methods with respect to computational efficiency and prediction performance. This paper presents a new hybrid two-layer feature selection approach that combines a wrapper and an embedded method in constructing an appropriate subset of predictors. In the first layer of the proposed method, the Genetic Algorithm(GA) has been adopted as a wrapper to search for the optimal subset of predictors, which aims to reduce the number of predictors and the prediction error. As one of the meta-heuristic approaches, GA is selected due to its computational efficiency; however, GAs do not guarantee the optimality. To address this issue, a second layer is added to the proposed method to eliminate any remaining redundant/irrelevant predictors to improve the prediction accuracy. Elastic Net(EN) has been selected as the embedded method in the second layer because of its flexibility in adjusting the penalty terms in regularization process and time efficiency. This hybrid two-layer approach has been applied on a Maize genetic dataset from NAM population, which consists of multiple subsets of datasets with different ratio of the number of predictors to the number of observations. The numerical results confirm the superiority of the proposed model.

There is a significantly accelerating trend in the application of the marine wave energy converters in recent years. As a result, it is imperative to adopt a suitable point for implementing these systems. Besides, the Caspian Sea, as one of the most important marine renewable energy sources in Asia, is capable of supplying the coastal areas with a large amount of energy. Therefore, areas around nine ports in the southern coasts of the Caspian Sea were selected to measure their wave energy potential. Initially, the amount of energy on these points was measured using the irregular energy theory. It was observed that the wave power was higher in the southwestern areas (within the Kiashahr coast and Anzali port) than the southeastern areas. A new approach was developed to compare these points and measure their fitnesses in supplying the maximum energy using the Grey Wolf optimizer (GWO) algorithm and time history analysis. In this method, the optimal parameters were first extracted from the algorithm for assessing the points within the southern areas of the Caspian Sea. These values were regarded as the assessment indices. Then, the fitness of each point was obtained using the correlation function and the norm vector to present the most optimal position with maximum wave energy exploitation potential. This new approach was validated with analytical data, and its accuracy in predicting and comparing the wave power on different points was approved. Finally, by a side-by-side comparison of the parameters affecting the wave energy, the optimum range of significant wave height and wave energy period was achieved.
