The roll out of 5G has been mainly characterized by its distinct support for vertical industries, especially manufacturing. Leveraging synergies among these two worlds, namely production facilities and network systems, is a fundamental aspect to enable flexibility and economic viability in future factories. This work highlights the potential for intelligent networking and advanced machine learning-based solutions in 5G-and-beyond systems in the context of Industry 4.0 and flexible manufacturing. The intersection thereof allows to create versatile machines and dynamic communication networks that can adapt to changes in the manufacturing process, factory layout and communication environment, supporting real-time interaction between humans, machines, and systems. We present a vision and corresponding framework by introducing the network-aware and production-aware principles, outlining results achieved in this context and summarizing them into three key use cases. Finally, we discuss a selection of remaining open challenges in private networks as well as give an outlook on future 6G research directions.

This paper introduces a physics-informed machine learning approach for pathloss prediction. This is achieved by including in the training phase simultaneously (i) physical dependencies between spatial loss field and (ii) measured pathloss values in the field. It is shown that the solution to a proposed learning problem improves generalization and prediction quality with a small number of neural network layers and parameters. The latter leads to fast inference times which are favorable for downstream tasks such as localization. Moreover, the physics-informed formulation allows training and prediction with a small amount of training data which makes it appealing for a wide range of practical pathloss prediction scenarios.

The problem of wireless M2M communication is twofold: the reliability aspect and the scalability aspect. The solution of this problem demands a delay constrained random access protocol. To this end we propose Admission Control based Traffic Agnostic Delay Constrained Random Access (AC/DC-RA) protocol. Our main contribution is enabling the stochastic delay constraints agnostic to the traffic, such that the stochastic delay constraint is valid with respect to varying number of arrivals. We achieve this with an admission control decision that uses a novel collision estimation algorithm for active number of arrivals per contention resource. We use an adaptive contention resolution algorithm to react to the varying number of arrivals. Using these tools, the admission control solves the stability problem. We show with simulations that AC/DC-RA provide stochastic delay constrained random access in a traffic agnostic way to sustain a stable performance against Poisson and Beta arrivals without any modification to the protocol.

Contention tree algorithm is initially invented as a solution to improve the stable throughput problem of Slotted ALOHA in multiple access schemes. Even though the throughput is stabilized in tree algorithms, the delay of requests may grow to infinity with respect to the arrival rate of the system. Delay depends heavily on the exploration of the tree structure, i.e., breadth search, or depth search. Breadth search is necessary for faster exploration of tree. The analytical probability distribution of delay, which is available mostly for depth search, is not generalizable to all breadth search. In this paper we fill this gap through though arbitrary grou** of branches and including this in the delay analysis. This enables obtaining the delay analysis of any contention tree algorithm that runs a breadth first search exploration. We show through simulations that the analysis is in agreement with the realizations.
