Tactile feedback is critical for understanding the dynamics of both rigid and deformable objects in many manipulation tasks, such as non-prehensile manipulation and dense packing. We introduce an approach that combines visual and tactile sensing for robotic manipulation by learning a neural, tactile-informed dynamics model. Our proposed framework, RoboPack, employs a recurrent graph neural network to estimate object states, including particles and object-level latent physics information, from historical visuo-tactile observations and to perform future state predictions. Our tactile-informed dynamics model, learned from real-world data, can solve downstream robotics tasks with model-predictive control. We demonstrate our approach on a real robot equipped with a compliant Soft-Bubble tactile sensor on non-prehensile manipulation and dense packing tasks, where the robot must infer the physics properties of objects from direct and indirect interactions. Trained on only an average of 30 minutes of real-world interaction data per task, our model can perform online adaptation and make touch-informed predictions. Through extensive evaluations in both long-horizon dynamics prediction and real-world manipulation, our method demonstrates superior effectiveness compared to previous learning-based and physics-based simulation systems.

Although semantic communication (SC) has shown its potential in efficiently transmitting multi-modal data such as text, speeches and images, SC for videos has focused primarily on pixel-level reconstruction. However, these SC systems may be suboptimal for downstream intelligent tasks. Moreover, SC systems without pixel-level video reconstruction present advantages by achieving higher bandwidth efficiency and real-time performance of various intelligent tasks. The difficulty in such system design lies in the extraction of task-related compact semantic representations and their accurate delivery over noisy channels. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end SC system for video question answering (VideoQA) tasks called VideoQA-SC. Our goal is to accomplish VideoQA tasks directly based on video semantics over noisy or fading wireless channels, bypassing the need for video reconstruction at the receiver. To this end, we develop a spatiotemporal semantic encoder for effective video semantic extraction, and a learning-based bandwidth-adaptive deep joint source-channel coding (DJSCC) scheme for efficient and robust video semantic transmission. Experiments demonstrate that VideoQA-SC outperforms traditional and advanced DJSCC-based SC systems that rely on video reconstruction at the receiver under a wide range of channel conditions and bandwidth constraints. In particular, when the signal-to-noise ratio is low, VideoQA-SC can improve the answer accuracy by 5.17% while saving almost 99.5% of the bandwidth at the same time, compared with the advanced DJSCC-based SC system. Our results show the great potential of task-oriented SC system design for video applications.

In this paper, we investigate the amalgamation of cell-free (CF) and extremely large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (XL-MIMO) technologies, referred to as a CF XL-MIMO, as a promising advancement for enabling future mobile networks. To address the computational complexity and communication power consumption associated with conventional centralized optimization, we focus on user-centric dynamic networks in which each user is served by an adaptive subset of access points (AP) rather than all of them. We begin our research by analyzing a joint resource allocation problem for energy-efficient CF XL-MIMO systems, encompassing cooperative clustering and power control design, where all clusters are adaptively adjustable. Then, we propose an innovative double-layer multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL)-based scheme, which offers an effective strategy to tackle the challenges of high-dimensional signal processing. In the section of numerical results, we compare various algorithms with different network architectures. These comparisons reveal that the proposed MARL-based cooperative architecture can effectively strike a balance between system performance and communication overhead, thereby improving energy efficiency performance. It is important to note that increasing the number of user equipments participating in information sharing can effectively enhance SE performance, which also leads to an increase in power consumption, resulting in a non-trivial trade-off between the number of participants and EE performance.

In this paper, we investigate a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided multiple-input single-output (MISO) system in the presence of electromagnetic interference (EMI) and channel aging with a Rician fading channel model between the base station (BS) and user equipment (UE). Specifically, we derive the closed-form expression for downlink spectral efficiency (SE) with maximum ratio transmission (MRT) precoding. The Monte-Carlo simulation supports the theoretical results, demonstrating that amplifying the weight of the line-of-sight (LoS) component in Rician fading channels can boost SE, while EMI has a detrimental impact. Furthermore, continuously increasing the number of RIS elements is not an optimal choice when EMI exists. Nonetheless, RIS can be deployed to compensate for SE degradation caused by channel aging effects. Finally, enlarging the RIS elements size can significantly improve system performance.

The design of precoding plays a crucial role in achieving a high downlink sum-rate in multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. In this correspondence, we propose a deep learning based joint CSI feedback and multiuser precoding method in frequency division duplex systems, aiming at maximizing the downlink sum-rate performance in an end-to-end manner. Specifically, the eigenvectors of the CSI matrix are compressed using deep joint source-channel coding techniques. This compression method enhances the resilience of the feedback CSI information against degradation in the feedback channel. A joint multiuser precoding module and a power allocation module are designed to adjust the precoding direction and the precoding power for users based on the feedback CSI information. Experimental results demonstrate that the downlink sum-rate can be significantly improved by using the proposed method, especially in scenarios with low signal-to-noise ratio and low feedback overhead.

Cell-free (CF) massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) is a promising technique for achieving high spectral efficiency (SE) using multiple distributed access points (APs). However, harsh propagation environments often lead to significant communication performance degradation due to high penetration loss. To overcome this issue, we introduce the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) into the CF mMIMO system as a low-cost and power-efficient solution. In this paper, we focus on optimizing the joint precoding design of the RIS-aided CF mMIMO system to maximize the sum SE. This involves optimizing the precoding matrix at the APs and the reflection coefficients at the RIS. To tackle this problem, we propose a fully distributed multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) algorithm that incorporates fuzzy logic (FL). Unlike conventional approaches that rely on alternating optimization techniques, our FL-based MARL algorithm only requires local channel state information, which reduces the need for high backhaul capacity. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed FL-MARL algorithm effectively reduces computational complexity while achieving similar performance as conventional MARL methods.

In this paper, we propose an end-to-end (E2E) semantic molecular communication system, aiming to enhance the efficiency of molecular communication systems by reducing the transmitted information. Furthermore, we propose a channel network to enable the E2E learning over the non-differentiable molecular channel. Networks designed for massive connectivity, comprising numerous Internet of Things (IoT) devices, are at the forefront of this advancement. In this paper, we consider Wireless Power Transfer (WPT)-enabled networks that support these IoT devices with massive Ultra-Reliable and Low-Latency Communication (mURLLC) services. The focus of such networks is information freshness, with the Age-of-Information (AoI) serving as the pivotal performance metric. In particular, we aim to minimize the maximum AoI among IoT devices by optimizing the scheduling policy. Our analytical findings establish the convexity property of the problem, which can be solved efficiently. Furthermore, we introduce the concept of AoI-oriented cluster capacity, examining the relationship between the number of supported devices and the AoI performance in the network. Numerical simulations validate the advantage of our proposed approach in enhancing AoI performance, indicating its potential to guide the design of future THz communication systems for IoT applications requiring mURLLC services.

To support extremely high data rates, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted terahertz (THz) communication is considered to be a promising technology for future sixth-generation networks. However, due to the typical employment of hybrid beamforming architecture in THz systems, as well as the passive nature of RIS which lacks the capability to process pilot signals, obtaining channel state information (CSI) is facing significant challenges. To accurately estimate the cascaded channel, we propose a novel low-complexity channel estimation scheme, which includes three steps. Specifically, we first estimate full CSI within a small subset of subcarriers (SCs). Then, we acquire angular information at base station and RIS based on the full CSI. Finally, we derive spatial directions and recover full-CSI for the remaining SCs. Theoretical analysis and simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can achieve superior performance in terms of normalized mean-square-error and exhibit a lower computational complexity compared with the existing algorithms.

In this paper, we develop an effective degrees of freedom (EDoF) performance analysis framework specifically tailored for near-field XL-MIMO systems. We explore five representative distinct XL-MIMO hardware designs, including uniform planar array (UPA)-based with point antennas, two-dimensional (2D) continuous aperture (CAP) plane-based, UPA-based with patch antennas, uniform linear array (ULA)-based, and one-dimensional (1D) CAP line segment-based XL-MIMO systems. Our analysis encompasses two near-field channel models: the scalar and dyadic Green's function-based channel models. More importantly, when applying the scalar Green's function-based channel, we derive EDoF expressions in the closed-form, characterizing the impacts of the physical size of the transceiver, the transmitting distance, and the carrier frequency. In our numerical results, we evaluate and compare the EDoF performance across all examined XL-MIMO designs, confirming the accuracy of our proposed closed-form expressions. Furthermore, we observe that with an increasing number of antennas, the EDoF performance for both UPA-based and ULA-based systems approaches that of 2D CAP plane and 1D CAP line segment-based systems, respectively. Moreover, we unveil that the EDoF performance for near-field XL-MIMO systems is predominantly determined by the array aperture size rather than the sheer number of antennas.

As required by Industry 4.0, companies will move towards flexible and individual manufacturing. To succeed in this transition, convergence of 5G and time-sensitive networks (TSN) is the most promising technology and has thus attracted considerable interest from industry and standardization groups. However, the delay and jitter of end-to-end (e2e) transmission will get exacerbated if the transmission opportunities are missed in TSN due to the 5G transmission jitter and the clock skew between the two network systems. To mitigate this phenomenon, we propose a novel asynchronous access mechanism (AAM) that isolates the jitter only in the 5G system and ensures zero transmission jitter in TSN. We then exploit AAM to develop an e2e asynchronous traffic scheduling model for coordinated allocation of resources for 5G and TSN to provide e2e transmission delay guarantees for time-critical flows. The results of our extensive simulation of AAM on OMNET++ corroborate the superior performance of AAM and the scheduling model.

However, mmWave signals ncounter severe losses when passing through the carriage, which decreases the quality of services on board. In this paper, we investigate an intelligent refracting surface (IRS)-assisted HST communication system. Herein, an IRS is deployed on the train window to dynamically reconfigure the propagation environment, and a hybrid time division multiple access-nonorthogonal multiple access scheme is leveraged for interference mitigation. We aim to maximize the overall throughput while taking into account the constraints imposed by base station beamforming, IRS discrete phase shifts and transmit power. To obtain a practical solution, we employ an alternating optimization method and propose a two-stage algorithm. In the first stage, the successive convex approximation method and branch and bound algorithm are leveraged for IRS phase shift design. In the second stage, the Lagrangian multiplier method is utilized for power allocation. Simulation results demonstrate the benefits of IRS adoption and power allocation for throughput improvement in mmWave HST networks.

The concept of age of information (AoI) has been proposed to quantify information freshness, which is crucial for time-sensitive applications. However, in millimeter wave (mmWave) communication systems, the link blockage caused by obstacles and the severe path loss greatly impair the freshness of information received by the user equipments (UEs). In this paper, we focus on reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted mmWave communications, where beamforming is performed at transceivers to provide directional beam gain and a RIS is deployed to combat link blockage. We aim to maximize the system sum rate while satisfying the information freshness requirements of UEs by jointly optimizing the beamforming at transceivers, the discrete RIS reflection coefficients, and the UE scheduling strategy. To facilitate a practical solution, we decompose the problem into two subproblems. For the first per-UE data rate maximization problem, we further decompose it into a beamforming optimization subproblem and a RIS reflection coefficient optimization subproblem. Considering the difficulty of channel estimation, we utilize the hierarchical search method for the former and the local search method for the latter, and then adopt the block coordinate descent (BCD) method to alternately solve them. For the second scheduling strategy design problem, a low-complexity heuristic scheduling algorithm is designed. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can effectively improve the system sum rate while satisfying the information freshness requirements of all UEs.

With singular value decomposition (SVD)-based precoding scheme, the MIMO channel can be decomposed into various sub-channels, and the feature outputs will experience sub-channels with different channel qualities. In the serial structure, one single network is used at both the transmitter and the receiver to jointly process data streams of all MIMO subchannels, while data steams of different MIMO subchannels are processed independently via multiple sub-networks in the parallel structure. The attention modules in both serial and parallel architectures enable the system to adapt to varying channel qualities and adjust the quantity of information outputs in accordance with the channel qualities. Experimental results demonstrate the proposed DJSCC structures have improved image transmission performance, and reveal the phenomenon via non-parameter entropy estimation that the learned DJSCC transceivers tend to transmit more information over better sub-channels.

Extremely large-scale multiple-input-multiple output (XL-MIMO) is a promising technology to achieve high spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE) in future wireless systems. The larger array aperture of XL-MIMO makes communication scenarios closer to the near-field region. Therefore, near-field resource allocation is essential in realizing the above key performance indicators (KPIs). Moreover, the overall performance of XL-MIMO systems heavily depends on the channel characteristics of the selected users, eliminating interference between users through beamforming, power control, etc. The above resource allocation issue constitutes a complex joint multi-objective optimization problem since many variables and parameters must be optimized, including the spatial degree of freedom, rate, power allocation, and transmission technique. The data-driven approach to robot control has been gathering pace rapidly, yet generalization to unseen task domains remains a critical challenge. We argue that the key to generalization is representations that are (i) rich enough to capture all task-relevant information and (ii) invariant to superfluous variability between the training and the test domains. We experimentally study such a representation -- containing both depth and semantic information -- for visual navigation and show that it enables a control policy trained entirely in simulated indoor scenes to generalize to diverse real-world environments, both indoors and outdoors. Further, we show that our representation reduces the A-distance between the training and test domains, improving the generalization error bound as a result. Our proposed approach is scalable: the learned policy improves continuously, as the foundation models that it exploits absorb more diverse data during pre-training.

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) emerges as an efficient and promising technology for the next wireless generation networks and has attracted a lot of attention owing to the capability of extending wireless coverage by reflecting signals toward targeted receivers. In this paper, we consider a RIS-assisted high-speed train (HST) communication system to enhance wireless coverage and improve coverage probability. First, coverage performance of the downlink single-input-single-output system is investigated, and the closed-form expression of coverage probability is derived. Moreover, travel distance maximization problem is formulated to facilitate RIS discrete phase design and RIS placement optimization, which is subject to coverage probability constraint. Simulation results validate that better coverage performance and higher travel distance can be achieved with deployment of RIS. The impacts of some key system parameters including transmission power, signal-to-noise ratio threshold, number of RIS elements, number of RIS quantization bits, horizontal distance between base station and RIS, and speed of HST on system performance are investigated. In addition, it is found that RIS can well improve coverage probability with limited power consumption for HST communications.

Cell-free (CF) extremely large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (XL-MIMO) is regarded as a promising technology for enabling future wireless communication systems. Significant attention has been generated by its considerable advantages in augmenting degrees of freedom. In this paper, we first investigate a CF XL-MIMO system with base stations equipped with XL-MIMO panels under a dynamic environment. Then, we propose an innovative multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL)-based power control algorithm that incorporates predictive management and distributed optimization architecture, which provides a dynamic strategy for addressing high-dimension signal processing problems. Specifically, we compare various MARL-based algorithms, which shows that the proposed MARL-based algorithm effectively strikes a balance between spectral efficiency (SE) performance and convergence time. Moreover, we consider a double-layer power control architecture based on the large-scale fading coefficients between antennas to suppress interference within dynamic systems. Compared to the single-layer architecture, the results obtained unveil that the proposed double-layer architecture has a nearly24% SE performance improvement, especially with massive antennas and smaller antenna spacing.

In Time-Triggered (TT) or time-sensitive networks, the transmission of a TT frame is required to be scheduled at a precise time instant for industrial distributed real-time control systems. Other (or {\em best-effort} (BE)) frames are forwarded in a BE manner. Under this scheduling strategy, the transmission of a TT frame must wait until its scheduled instant even if it could have been transmitted sooner. On the other hand, BE frames are transmitted whenever possible but may miss deadlines or may even be dropped due to congestion. As a result, TT transmission and BE delivery are incompatible with each other.
To remedy this incompatibility, we propose a synergistic switch architecture (SWA) for TT transmission with BE delivery to dynamically improve the end-to-end (e2e) latency of TT frames by opportunistically exploiting BE delivery. Given a TT frame, the SWA generates and transmits a cloned copy with BE delivery. The first frame arriving at the receiver device is delivered with a configured jitter and the other copy ignored. So, the SWA achieves shorter latency and controllable jitter, the best of both worlds. We have implemented SWA using FPGAs in an industry-strength TT switches and used four test scenarios to demonstrate SWA's improvements of e2e latency and controllable jitter over the state-of-the-art TT transmission scheme.

Semantic communication (SemCom) holds promise for reducing network resource consumption while achieving the communications goal. However, the computational overheads in jointly training semantic encoders and decoders-and the subsequent deployment in network devices-are overlooked. Recent advances in Generative artificial intelligence (GAI) offer a potential solution. The robust learning abilities of GAI models indicate that semantic decoders can reconstruct source messages using a limited amount of semantic information, e.g., prompts, without joint training with the semantic encoder. A notable challenge, however, is the instability introduced by GAI's diverse generation ability. This instability, evident in outputs like text-generated images, limits the direct application of GAI in scenarios demanding accurate message recovery, such as face image transmission. To solve the above problems, this paper proposes a GAI-aided SemCom system with multi-model prompts for accurate content decoding. Moreover, in response to security concerns, we introduce the application of covert communications aided by a friendly jammer. The system jointly optimizes the diffusion step, jamming, and transmitting power with the aid of the generative diffusion models, enabling successful and secure transmission of the source messages.

Extremely large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (XL-MIMO) is a promising technique to enable versatile applications for future wireless communications. To realize the huge potential performance gain, accurate channel state information is a fundamental technical prerequisite. In conventional massive MIMO, the channel is often modeled by the far-field planar-wavefront with rich sparsity in the angular domain that facilitates the design of low-complexity channel estimation. However, this sparsity is not conspicuous in XL-MIMO systems due to the non-negligible near-field spherical-wavefront. To address the inherent performance loss of the angular-domain channel estimation schemes, we first propose the polar-domain multiple residual dense network (P-MRDN) for XL-MIMO systems based on the polar-domain sparsity of the near-field channel by improving the existing MRDN scheme. Furthermore, a polar-domain multi-scale residual dense network (P-MSRDN) is designed to improve the channel estimation accuracy. Finally, simulation results reveal the superior performance of the proposed schemes compared with existing benchmark schemes and the minimal influence of the channel sparsity on the proposed schemes.

The cell-free (CF) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system is considered a cutting-edge technology in next-generation mobile communication due to its ability to provide high-performance coverage seamlessly and uniformly. This paper aims to mitigate the negative impact of channel aging due to the movement of user equipment in CF massive MIMO systems by utilizing rate-splitting (RS) technology. Taking into account the outdated channel state information, we obtain the achievable sum spectral efficiency (SE) of the RS-assisted CF massive MIMO system, where the private messages can directly adopt conventional maximum ratio, local minimum mean square error (MMSE), and centralized MMSE precoding schemes. Moreover, we propose a bisection-based precoding scheme that maximizes the minimum SE of common messages, which outperforms the superposition-based and random precoding schemes and exhibits strong robustness in complex mobile scenarios. Furthermore, we derive a novel closed-form sum SE expression for the considered system. The results demonstrate that RS technology can mitigate interference in mobile CF massive MIMO systems, improving overall system performance.

The flexible-position multiple-input multiple-output (FLP-MIMO), such as fluid antennas and movable antennas, is a promising technology for future wireless communications. This is due to the fact that the positions of antennas at the transceiver and reflector can be dynamically optimized to achieve better channel conditions and, as such, can provide high spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE) gains with fewer antennas. In this article, we introduce the fundamentals of FLP-MIMO systems, including hardware design, structure design, and potential applications. We shall demonstrate that FLP-MIMO, using fewer flexible antennas, can match the channel hardening achieved by a large number of fixed antennas. We will then analyze the SE-EE relationship for FLP-MIMO and fixed-position MIMO. Furthermore, we will design the optimal trajectory of flexible antennas to maximize system sum SE or total EE at a fixed travel distance of each antenna. Finally, several important research directions regarding FLP-MIMO communications are presented to facilitate further investigation.

With the help of mobile relays (MRs) installed on the roof of the train, the application of Millimeter-Wave (mm-wave) communication which has rich spectrum resources to the train-ground communication system can realize high data rate, so as to meet users' increasing demand for broad-band multimedia access. In this paper, we formulate the user association and transmission scheduling problem in the mm-wave train-ground communication system with MR operating in the FD mode as a nonlinear programming problem. In order to maximize the system throughput and the number of users meeting quality of service (QoS) requirements, we propose an algorithm based on coalition game to solve the challenging NP-hard problem, and also prove the convergence and Nash-stable structure of the proposed algorithm. In order to achieve higher network capacity with limited resources and meet the quality of service (QoS) requirements of more users in the integrated mmWave access and terahertz backhaul network, this paper formulates a problem of maximizing the number of users successfully served in both the access and backhaul links. Since the problem is a non-linear integer optimization problem, a minimum rate ratio user association and transmission scheduling algorithm is proposed to obtain a suboptimal solution. The proposed algorithm takes the minimum rate ratio as the user association criterion and schedules first the users with fewer backhaul transmission slots. In addition, the algorithm will update the number of access transmission slots allocated to users and the access scheduling results after the backhaul scheduling phase. One technology that has the potential to improve wireless communications in years to come is integrated sensing and communication (ISAC). In this study, we take advantage of reconfigurable intelligent surface's (RIS) potential advantages to achieve ISAC while using the same frequency and resources. Specifically, by using the reflecting elements, the RIS dynamically modifies the radio waves' strength or phase in order to change the environment for radio transmission and increase the ISAC systems' transmission rate. We investigate a single cell downlink communication situation with RIS assistance. Combining the ISAC base station's (BS) beamforming with RIS's discrete phase shift optimization, while guaranteeing the sensing signal, The aim of optimizing the sum rate is specified. We take advantage of alternating maximization to find practical solutions with dividing the challenge into two minor issues. The increasing entertainment needs of passengers, safety control information exchanges of trains, etc., make train-to-train (T2T) communications face the challenge of achieving high-capacity and high-quality data transmissions. In order to greatly increase the communication capacity, it is urgent to introduce millimeter wave (mmWave) technology. Faced with the problem that mmWave link is easy to be blocked, this paper leverages the existing equipment to assist relay, and proposes an effective transmission scheduling scheme to improve the robustness of T2T communication systems. First of all, we formulate a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) optimization problem the transmission scheduling in T2T communication systems where mobile relays (MRs) are all working in the full-duplex (FD) mode. With the rapid growth of mobile data traffic, the shortage of radio spectrum resource has become increasingly prominent. Millimeter wave (mmWave) small cells can be densely deployed in macro cells to improve network capacity and spectrum utilization. Such a network architecture is referred to as mmWave heterogeneous cellular networks (HetNets). Compared with the traditional wired backhaul, The integrated access and backhaul (IAB) architecture with wireless backhaul is more flexible and cost-effective for mmWave HetNets. However, the imbalance of throughput between the access and backhaul links will constrain the total system throughput. Consequently, it is necessary to jointly design of radio access and backhaul link. In this paper, we study the joint optimization of user association and backhaul resource allocation in mmWave HetNets, where different mmWave bands are adopted by the access and backhaul links. Considering the non-convex and combinatorial characteristics of the optimization problem and the dynamic nature of the mmWave link, we propose a multi-agent deep reinforcement learning (MADRL) based scheme to maximize the long-term total link throughput of the network. The simulation results show that the scheme can not only adjust user association and backhaul resource allocation strategy according to the dynamics in the access link state, but also effectively improve the link throughput under different system configurations.

Due to the development of communication technology and the rise of user network demand, a reasonable resource allocation for wireless networks is the key to guaranteeing regular operation and improving system performance. Various frequency bands exist in the natural network environment, and heterogeneous cellular network (HCN) has become a hot topic for current research. Meanwhile, Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) has become a key technology for develo** next-generation wireless networks. By modifying the phase of the incident signal arriving at the RIS surface, RIS can improve the signal quality at the receiver and reduce co-channel interference. In this paper, we develop a RIS-assisted HCN model for a multi-base station (BS) multi-frequency network, which includes 4G, 5G, millimeter wave (mmwave), and terahertz networks, and considers the case of multiple network coverage users, which is more in line with the realistic network characteristics and the concept of 6G networks. We propose the optimization objective of maximizing the system sum rate, which is decomposed into two subproblems, i.e., the user resource allocation and the phase shift optimization problem of RIS components. Due to the NP-hard and coupling relationship, we use the block coordinate descent (BCD) method to alternately optimize the local solutions of the coalition game and the local discrete phase search algorithm to obtain the global solution. In contrast, most previous studies have used the coalition game algorithm to solve the resource allocation problem alone. Simulation results show that the algorithm performs better than the rest of the algorithms, effectively improves the system sum rate, and achieves performance close to the optimal solution of the traversal algorithm with low complexity.

This paper investigates the system model and the transmit beamforming design for the Cell-Free massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system. The impact of the uncertainty of the target locations on the propagation of wireless signals is considered during both uplink and downlink phases, and especially, the main statistics of the MIMO channel estimation error are theoretically derived in the closed-form fashion. A fundamental performance metric, termed communication-sensing (C-S) region, is defined for the considered system via three cases, i.e., the sensing-only case, the communication-only case and the ISAC case. The transmit beamforming design problems for the three cases are respectively carried out through different reformulations, e.g., the Lagrangian dual transform and the quadratic fractional transform, and some combinations of the block coordinate descent method and the successive convex approximation method. Numerical results present a 3-dimensional C-S region with a dynamic number of access points to illustrate the trade-off between communication and radar sensing. The advantage for radar sensing of the Cell-Free massive MIMO system is also studied via a comparison with the traditional cellular system. Finally, the efficacy of the proposed beamforming scheme is validated in comparison with zero-forcing and maximum ratio transmission schemes.

Cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) and extremely large-scale MIMO (XL-MIMO) are regarded as promising innovations for the forthcoming generation of wireless communication systems. Their significant advantages in augmenting the number of degrees of freedom have garnered considerable interest. In this article, we first review the essential opportunities and challenges induced by XL-MIMO systems. We then propose the enhanced paradigm of cell-free XL-MIMO, which incorporates multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) to provide a distributed strategy for tackling the problem of high-dimension signal processing and costly energy consumption. Based on the unique near-field characteristics, we propose two categories of the low-complexity design, i.e., antenna selection and power control, to adapt to different cell-free XL-MIMO scenarios and achieve the maximum data rate. For inspiration, several critical future research directions pertaining to green cell-free XL-MIMO systems are presented.

Cell-free (CF) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) are two promising technologies for realizing future beyond-fifth generation (B5G) networks. In this paper, we consider a practical spatially correlated RIS-aided CF massive MIMO system with multi-antenna access points (APs) over spatially correlated fading channels. Different from previous work, the electromagnetic interference (EMI) at RIS is considered to further characterize the system performance of the actual environment. Then, we derive the closed-form expression for the system spectral efficiency (SE) with the maximum ratio (MR) combining at the APs and the large-scale fading decoding (LSFD) at the central processing unit (CPU). Moreover, to counteract the near-far effect and EMI, we propose practical fractional power control (FPC) and max-min power control algorithms to further improve the system performance. We unveil the impact of EMI, channel correlations, and different signal processing methods on the uplink SE of user equipments (UEs). The accuracy of our derived analytical results is verified by extensive Monte-Carlo simulations. Our results show that the EMI can substantially degrade the SE, especially for those UEs with unsatisfactory channel conditions. Besides, increasing the number of RIS elements is always beneficial in terms of the SE, but with diminishing returns when the number of RIS elements is sufficiently large. Furthermore, the existence of spatial correlations among RIS elements can deteriorate the system performance when RIS is impaired by EMI.

The explosive growth of data results in more scarce spectrum resources. It is important to optimize the system performance under limited resources. In this paper, we investigate how to achieve weighted throughput (WTP) maximization for cell-free (CF) multiuser MIMO (MU-MIMO) multicarrier (MC) systems through resource allocation (RA), in the cases of finite blocklength (FBL) and infinite blocklength (INFBL) regimes. To ensure the quality of service (QoS) of each user, particularly for the block error rate (BLER) and latency in the FBL regime, the WTP gets maximized under the constraints of total power consumption and required QoS metrics. Since the channels vary in different subcarriers (SCs) and inter-user interference strengths, the WTP can be maximized by scheduling the best users in each time-frequency (TF) resource and advanced beamforming design, while the resources can be fully utilized. With this motivation, we propose a joint user scheduling (US) and beamforming design algorithm based on the successive convex approximation (SCA) and gene-aided (GA) algorithms, to address a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed RA outperforms the comparison schemes. And the CF system in our scenario is capable of achieving higher spectral efficiency than the centralized antenna systems (CAS).

CANDECOMP/PARAFAC (CP) decomposition is the mostly used model to formulate the received tensor signal in a multi-domain massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, as the receiver generally sums the components from different paths or users. To achieve accurate and low-latency channel estimation, good and fast CP decomposition algorithms are desired. The CP alternating least squares (CPALS) is the workhorse algorithm for calculating the CP decomposition. However, its performance depends on the initializations, and good starting values can lead to more efficient solutions. Existing initialization strategies are decoupled from the CPALS and are not necessarily favorable for solving the CP decomposition. To enhance the algorithm's speed and accuracy, this paper proposes a deep-learning-aided CPALS (DL-CPALS) method that uses a deep neural network (DNN) to generate favorable initializations. The proposed DL-CPALS integrates the DNN and CPALS to a model-based deep learning paradigm, where it trains the DNN to generate an initialization that facilitates fast and accurate CP decomposition. Moreover, benefiting from the CP low-rankness, the proposed method is trained using noisy data and does not require paired clean data. The proposed DL-CPALS is applied to millimeter wave MIMO orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (mmWave MIMO-OFDM) channel estimation. Experimental results demonstrate the significant improvements of the proposed method in terms of both speed and accuracy for CP decomposition and channel estimation.

Extremely large-scale multiple-input-multipleoutput (XL-MIMO) has been reviewed as a promising technology for future sixth-generation (6G) networks to achieve higher performance. In practice, various linear precoding schemes, such as zero-forcing (ZF) and regularized ZF (RZF) precoding, are sufficient to achieve near-optimal performance in traditional massive MIMO (mMIMO) systems. It is critical to note that in large-scale antenna arrays the operation of channel matrix inversion poses a significant computational challenge for these precoders. Therefore, we explore several iterative methods for determining the precoding matrix for XL-MIMO systems instead of direct matrix inversion. Taking into account small- and large-scale fading as well as spatial correlation between antennas, we study their computational complexity and convergence rate. Furthermore, we propose the Jacobi-Preconditioning Conjugate Gradient (Jac-PCG) iterative inversion method, which enjoys a faster convergence speed than the CG method. Besides, the closed-form expression of spectral efficiency (SE) considering the interference between subarrays in downlink XL-MIMO systems is derived. In the numerical results, it is shown that the complexity given by the Jac-PCG algorithm has about 54% reduction than the traditional RZF algorithm at basically the same SE performance.

Systems for serving inference requests on graph neural networks (GNN) must combine low latency with high throughout, but they face irregular computation due to skew in the number of sampled graph nodes and aggregated GNN features. This makes it challenging to exploit GPUs effectively: using GPUs to sample only a few graph nodes yields lower performance than CPU-based sampling; and aggregating many features exhibits high data movement costs between GPUs and CPUs. Therefore, current GNN serving systems use CPUs for graph sampling and feature aggregation, limiting throughput.
We describe Quiver, a distributed GPU-based GNN serving system with low-latency and high-throughput. Quiver's key idea is to exploit workload metrics for predicting the irregular computation of GNN requests, and governing the use of GPUs for graph sampling and feature aggregation: (1) for graph sampling, Quiver calculates the probabilistic sampled graph size, a metric that predicts the degree of parallelism in graph sampling. Quiver uses this metric to assign sampling tasks to GPUs only when the performance gains surpass CPU-based sampling; and (2) for feature aggregation, Quiver relies on the feature access probability to decide which features to partition and replicate across a distributed GPU NUMA topology. We show that Quiver achieves up to 35 times lower latency with an 8 times higher throughput compared to state-of-the-art GNN approaches (DGL and PyG).

In recent years, with the explosive growth of data traffic, communication base stations (BSs) need to serve more and more users. Offloading traffic from BSs has become an efficient way to reduce the burden on BSs. Device-to-Device (D2D) communications have emerged to improve spectrum utilization by reusing the frequency spectrum of the cellular frequency band. In the general environment, Heterogeneous Cellular Networks (HCNs) including millimeter wave (mm-wave) have appeared. Since the D2D link allows to share of spectrum resources with the cellular user, it will bring potential interference to the cellular user. Fortunately, an emerging technology called Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) can mitigate the severe interference caused by D2D links by sha** the incident beam and improving the multipath phase shift. In this paper, we study the resource allocation scheme to maximize the system sum rate, in the RISassisted single-cell heterogeneous D2D communication scenario. To solve the Block Coordinate Descent (BCD) problem, the problem of maximizing the sum rate is decomposed into three sub-problems. The resource allocation sub-problem is solved by a coalitional game method based on the game theory. The power allocation problem of the coalition converts the concave function into a convex optimization by mathematical transformation. The problem is solved by the gradient descent method. The local search method is adopted to find the optimum for the phase conversion problem. Then iterate until the difference of sum rate is less than the threshold. The simulation results show that the designed algorithm is superior to other benchmark schemes in the literature.

With the recent advancements in edge artificial intelligence (AI), future sixth-generation (6G) networks need to support new AI tasks such as classification and clustering apart from data recovery. Motivated by the success of deep learning, the semantic-aware and task-oriented communications with deep joint source and channel coding (JSCC) have emerged as new paradigm shifts in 6G from the conventional data-oriented communications with separate source and channel coding (SSCC). However, most existing works focused on the deep JSCC designs for one task of data recovery or AI task execution independently, which cannot be transferred to other unintended tasks. Differently, this paper investigates the JSCC semantic communications to support multi-task services, by performing the image data recovery and classification task execution simultaneously. First, we propose a new end-to-end deep JSCC framework by unifying the coding rate reduction maximization and the mean square error (MSE) minimization in the loss function. Here, the coding rate reduction maximization facilitates the learning of discriminative features for enabling to perform classification tasks directly in the feature space, and the MSE minimization helps the learning of informative features for high-quality image data recovery. Next, to further improve the robustness against variational wireless channels, we propose a new gated deep JSCC design, in which a gated net is incorporated for adaptively pruning the output features to adjust their dimensions based on channel conditions. Finally, we present extensive numerical experiments to validate the performance of our proposed deep JSCC designs as compared to various benchmark schemes.

To deal with the explosive growth of mobile traffic, millimeter-wave (mmWave) communications with abundant bandwidth resources have been applied to vehicular networks. As mmWave signal is sensitive to blockage, we introduce the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-aided two-way relaying system for vehicular connection enhancement and coverage expansion. How to improve transmission efficiency and to reduce latency time in such a dynamic scenario is a challenging problem. In this paper, we formulate the joint optimization problem of relay selection and transmission scheduling, aiming to reduce transmission time while meeting the throughput requirements. To solve this problem, two schemes are proposed. The first one is the random relay selection with concurrent scheduling (RCS), a low-complexity algorithm implemented in two steps. The second one is the joint relay selection with dynamic scheduling (JRDS), which fully avoids relay contentions and exploits potential concurrent ability, to obtain further performance enhancement over RCS. Through extensive simulations under different environments with various flow numbers and vehicle speeds, we demonstrate that both RCS and JRDS schemes outperform the existing schemes significantly in terms of transmission time and network throughput. We also analyze the impact of threshold selection on achievable performance.

In this paper, we investigate the uplink transmit power optimization problem in cell-free (CF) extremely large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (XL-MIMO) systems. Instead of applying the traditional methods, we propose two signal processing architectures: the centralized training and centralized execution with fuzzy logic as well as the centralized training and decentralized execution with fuzzy logic, respectively, which adopt the amalgamation of multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) and fuzzy logic to solve the design problem of power control for the maximization of the system spectral efficiency (SE). Furthermore, the uplink performance of the system adopting maximum ratio (MR) combining and local minimum mean-squared error (L-MMSE) combining is evaluated. Our results show that the proposed methods with fuzzy logic outperform the conventional MARL-based method and signal processing methods in terms of computational complexity. Also, the SE performance under MR combining is even better than that of the conventional MARL-based method.

Extremely large-scale multiple-input-multiple-output (XL-MIMO) is a promising technology for the future sixth-generation (6G) networks to achieve higher performance. In practice, various linear precoding schemes, such as zero-forcing (ZF) and regularized zero-forcing (RZF) precoding, are capable of achieving both large spectral efficiency (SE) and low bit error rate (BER) in traditional massive MIMO (mMIMO) systems. However, these methods are not efficient in extremely large-scale regimes due to the inherent spatial non-stationarity and high computational complexity. To address this problem, we investigate a low-complexity precoding algorithm, e.g., randomized Kaczmarz (rKA), taking into account the spatial non-stationary properties in XL-MIMO systems. Furthermore, we propose a novel mode of randomization, i.e., sampling without replacement rKA (SwoR-rKA), which enjoys a faster convergence speed than the rKA algorithm. Besides, the closed-form expression of SE considering the interference between subarrays in downlink XL-MIMO systems is derived. Numerical results show that the complexity given by both rKA and SwoR-rKA algorithms has 51.3% reduction than the traditional RZF algorithm with similar SE performance. More importantly, our algorithms can effectively reduce the BER when the transmitter has imperfect channel estimation.
