Our analysis revealed two overarching areas of concern in these AI generators, including (1) systematic gender and racial biases, and (2) subtle biases in facial expressions… ▽ More This study analyzed images generated by three popular generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools - Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, and DALLE 2 - representing various occupations to investigate potential bias in AI generators. Our analysis revealed two overarching areas of concern in these AI generators, including (1) systematic gender and racial biases, and (2) subtle biases in facial expressions and appearances. Firstly, we found that all three AI generators exhibited bias against women and African Americans. Moreover, we found that the evident gender and racial biases uncovered in our analysis were even more pronounced than the status quo when compared to labor force statistics or Google images, intensifying the harmful biases we are actively striving to rectify in our society. Secondly, our study uncovered more nuanced prejudices in the portrayal of emotions and appearances. For example, women were depicted as younger with more smiles and happiness, while men were depicted as older with more neutral expressions and anger, posing a risk that generative AI models may unintentionally depict women as more submissive and less competent than men. Such nuanced biases, by their less overt nature, might be more problematic as they can permeate perceptions unconsciously and may be more difficult to rectify. Although the extent of bias varied depending on the model, the direction of bias remained consistent in both commercial and open-source AI generators. As these tools become commonplace, our study highlights the urgency to identify and mitigate various biases in generative AI, reinforcing the commitment to ensuring that AI technologies benefit all of humanity for a more inclusive future. △ Less

"We care": Improving Code Mixed Speech Emotion Recognition in Customer-Care Conversations

In natural settings such as a cu… ▽ More Speech Emotion Recognition (SER) is the task of identifying the emotion expressed in a spoken utterance. Emotion recognition is essential in building robust conversational agents in domains such as law, healthcare, education, and customer support. Most of the studies published on SER use datasets created by employing professional actors in a noise-free environment. In natural settings such as a customer care conversation, the audio is often noisy with speakers regularly switching between different languages as they see fit. We have worked in collaboration with a leading unicorn in the Conversational AI sector to develop Natural Speech Emotion Dataset (NSED). NSED is a natural code-mixed speech emotion dataset where each utterance in a conversation is annotated with emotion, sentiment, valence, arousal, and dominance (VAD) values. In this paper, we show that by incorporating word-level VAD value we improve on the task of SER by 2%, for negative emotions, over the baseline value for NSED. High accuracy for negative emotion recognition is essential because customers expressing negative opinions/views need to be pacified with urgency, lest complaints and dissatisfaction snowball and get out of hand. Escalation of negative opinions speedily is crucial for business interests. Our study then can be utilized to develop conversational agents which are more polite and empathetic in such situations. △ Less

SIS Epidemic Model under Mobility on Multi-layer Networks

We model the mobility of individuals of each class across different patches through an associated Continuous Time Markov C… ▽ More We study the influence of heterogeneous mobility patterns in a population on the SIS epidemic model. In particular, we consider a patchy environment in which each patch comprises individuals belonging the different classes, e.g., individuals in different socio-economic strata. We model the mobility of individuals of each class across different patches through an associated Continuous Time Markov Chain (CTMC). The topology of these multiple CTMCs constitute the multi-layer network of mobility. At each time, individuals move in the multi-layer network of spatially-distributed patches according to their CTMC and subsequently interact with the local individuals in the patch according to an SIS epidemic model. We derive a deterministic continuum limit model describing these mobility-epidemic interactions. We establish the existence of a Disease-Free Equilibrium (DFE) and an Endemic Equilibrium (EE) under different parameter regimes and establish their (almost) global asymptotic stability using Lyapunov techniques. We derive simple sufficient conditions that highlight the influence of the multi-layer network on the stability of DFE. Finally, we numerically illustrate that the derived model provides a good approximation to the stochastic model with a finite population and also demonstrate the influence of the multi-layer network structure on the transient performance. △ Less

Eat & Tell: A Randomized Trial of Random-Loss Incentive to Increase Dietary Self-Tracking Compliance

In study designs where repeated administration of… ▽ More A growing body of evidence has shown that incorporating behavioral economics principles into the design of financial incentive programs helps improve their cost-effectiveness, promote individuals' short-term engagement, and increase compliance in health behavior interventions. Yet, their effects on long-term engagement have not been fully examined. In study designs where repeated administration of incentives is required to ensure the regularity of behaviors, the effectiveness of subsequent incentives may decrease as a result of the law of diminishing marginal utility. In this paper, we introduce random-loss incentive -- a new financial incentive based on loss aversion and unpredictability principles -- to address the problem of individuals' growing insensitivity to repeated interventions over time. We evaluate the new incentive design by conducting a randomized controlled trial to measure the influences of random losses on participants' dietary self-tracking and self-reporting compliance using a mobile web application called Eat & Tell. The results show that random losses are significantly more effective than fixed losses in encouraging long-term engagement. △ Less

Does Journaling Encourage Healthier Choices? Analyzing Healthy Eating Behaviors of Food Journalers

However, the links between journaling and healthy eating have not been thoroughly examined. Beyond caloric restriction, do journalers consistently and sufficiently consume healthful diets? How different are their eating habits compared to those of average consumers who tend to be less conscious about health? In this study, we analyze the healthy eating behaviors of active food journalers using data from MyFitnessPal. Surprisingly, our findings show that food journalers do not eat as healthily as they should despite their proclivity to health eating and their food choices resemble those of the general populace. Furthermore, we find that the journaling duration is only a marginal determinant of healthy eating outcomes and sociodemographic factors, such as gender and regions of residence, are much more predictive of healthy food choices. △ Less

On the Incentive to Deviate in Core Selecting Combinatorial Auctions

For example, the prices could be the projection of Vikrey prices onto the core of reported prices. For example, the prices could be the projection of Vikrey prices onto the core of reported prices. The use of Vikrey prices should lead to more straightforward bidding, but the projection reverses some of the incentive for bidders to report truthfully. Still, we conjecture that the price paid by a winning buyer increases no faster than the bid, as in a first price auction. It would be rather disturbing if the conjecture is false. The conjecture is established for a buyer interacting with disjoint groups of other buyers in a star network setting. It is also shown that for any core-selecting payment rule and any integer w greater than or equal to two, there is a market setting with w winning buyers such that the price paid by some winning buyer increases at least (1-1/w) times as fast as the price bid. △ Less

Fixed and Market Pricing for Cloud Services

Motivated by the problem of pricing cloud instances, we model a cloud computing service as linked $GI/GI/\cdot$ queuing systems where the provider chooses to offer a fixed pricing service, a dynamic market based service, or a hybrid of both, where jobs can be preempted in the market-based service. Motivated by the problem of pricing cloud instances, we model a cloud computing service as linked $GI/GI/\cdot$ queuing systems where the provider chooses to offer a fixed pricing service, a dynamic market based service, or a hybrid of both, where jobs can be preempted in the market-based service. Users (jobs), who are heterogeneous in both the value they place on service and their cost for waiting, then choose between the services offered. Combining insights from auction theory with queuing theory we are able to characterize user equilibrium behavior, and show its insensitivity to the precise market design mechanism used. We then provide theoretical and simulation based evidence suggesting that a fixed price typically, though not always, generates a higher expected revenue than the hybrid system for the provider. △ Less

On Bidding with Securities: Risk Aversion and Positive Dependence

(2005) consider auctions in which bids are selected from a completely ordered family of securities whose values are tied to the resource being auctioned. The paper defines a notion of relative steepness of families of securities and shows that a steeper family provides greater expected revenue to the seller. Two assumptions are: the buyers are risk-neutral; the random variables through which values and signals of the buyers are realized are affiliated. We show that this revenue ranking holds for the second price auction in the case of risk-aversion. However, it does not hold if affiliation is relaxed to a less restrictive form of positive dependence, namely first order stochastic dominance (FOSD). We define the relative strong steepness of families of securities and show that it provides a necessary and sufficient condition for comparing two families in the FOSD case. The winning buyer in turn develops this resource to generate profit. Two forms of payment are considered: charging the winning buyer a one-time payment, or an initial payment plus a profit sharing contract (PSC). We consider a symmetric interdependent values model with risk averse or risk neutral buyers and a risk neutral seller. For the second price auction and the English auction, we show that the seller's expected total revenue from the auction where he also takes a fraction of the positive profit is higher than the expected revenue from the auction with only a one-time payment. Moreover, the seller can generate an even higher expected total revenue if, in addition to taking a fraction of the positive profit, he also takes the same fraction of any loss incurred from develo** the resource. Moving beyond simple PSCs, we show that the auction with a PSC from a very general class generates higher expected total revenue than the auction with only a one-time payment. Finally, we show that suitable PSCs provide higher expected total revenue than a one-time payment even when the incentives of the winning buyer to develop the resource must be addressed by the seller. △ Less

Our focus is on auctions with single-parameter buyers and where buyers' valuation sets are finite. For binary valued single-parameter buyers with independent (not necessarily identically distributed) private valuations, we show that the worst case efficiency loss ratio (ELR) is no worse than it is with only one buyer; moreover, it is at most 1/2. Moving beyond the case of binary valuations but restricting to single item auctions, where buyers' private valuations are independent and identically distributed, we obtain bounds on the worst case ELR as a function of number of buyers, cardinality of buyers' valuation set, and ratio of maximum to minimum possible values that buyers can have for the item. △ Less

Each buyer is interested only in a specific bundle of items and has a value for the same. Both his bundle and its value are his private information. The bundles that buyers are interested in and their corresponding values are assumed to be realized from known probability distributions independent across the buyers. We identify revenue optimal auctions with a simple structure, if the conditional distribution of any buyer's valuation is nondecreasing, in the hazard rates ordering of probability distributions, as a function of the bundle the buyer is interested in. The revenue optimal auction is given by the solution of a maximum weight independent set problem. We provide a novel graphical construction of the weights and highlight important properties of the resulting auction. △ Less
