This paper presents an ontology of portions of matter with practical implications across scientific and industrial domains. The ontology is developed under the Unified Foundational Ontology (UFO), which uses the concept of quantity to represent topologically maximally self-connected portions of matter. The proposed ontology introduces the granuleOf parthood relation, holding between objects and portions of matter. It also discusses the constitution of quantities by collections of granules, the representation of sub-portions of matter, and the tracking of matter provenance between quantities using historical relations. Lastly, a case study is presented to demonstrate the use of the portion of matter ontology in the geology domain for an Oil & Gas industry application. In the case study, we model how to represent the historical relation between an original portion of rock and the sub-portions created during the industrial process. Lastly, future research directions are outlined, including investigating granularity levels and defining a taxonomy of events.

Measuring similarity between RDF graphs is essential for various applications, including knowledge discovery, semantic web analysis, and recommender systems. However, traditional similarity measures often treat all properties equally, potentially overlooking the varying importance of different properties in different contexts. Consequently, exploring weighted property approaches for RDF graph similarity measure presents an intriguing avenue for investigation. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a weighted property approach for RDF graph similarity measure to address this limitation. Our approach incorporates the relative importance of properties into the similarity calculation, enabling a more nuanced and context-aware measures of similarity. We evaluate our approach through a comprehensive experimental study on an RDF graph dataset in the vehicle domain. Our results demonstrate that the proposed approach achieves promising accuracy and effectively reflects the perceived similarity between RDF graphs.

In today's data-rich environment, recommender systems play a crucial role in decision support systems. They provide to users personalized recommendations and explanations about these recommendations. Embedding-based models, despite their widespread use, often suffer from a lack of interpretability, which can undermine trust and user engagement. This paper presents an approach that combines embedding-based and semantic-based models to generate post-hoc explanations in recommender systems, leveraging ontology-based knowledge graphs to improve interpretability and explainability. By organizing data within a structured framework, ontologies enable the modeling of intricate relationships between entities, which is essential for generating explanations. By combining embedding-based and semantic based models for post-hoc explanations in recommender systems, the framework we defined aims at producing meaningful and easy-to-understand explanations, enhancing user trust and satisfaction, and potentially promoting the adoption of recommender systems across the e-commerce sector.

This study addresses the challenge of identifying similarities within a wide range of crisis-related information. To overcome this challenge, we employed an ontology-based crisis situation knowledge base enriched with crisis-related information. Additionally, we implemented a semantic similarity measure to assess the degree of similarity between crisis situations. Our investigation specifically focuses on recognizing similar crises through the application of ontology-based knowledge mining. Through our experiments, we demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of our approach to recognizing similar crises. These findings highlight the potential of ontology-based knowledge mining for enhancing crisis recognition processes and improving overall crisis management strategies.

Crisis situations can present complex and multifaceted challenges, often requiring the involvement of multiple organizations and stakeholders with varying areas of expertise, responsibilities, and resources. Acquiring accurate and timely information about impacted areas is crucial to effectively respond to these crises. In this paper, we investigate how collaborative and social technologies help to contextualize crises, including identifying impacted areas and real-time needs. To this end, we define CORec-Cri (Contextulized Ontology-based Recommender system for crisis management) based on existing work. Our motivation for this approach is two-fold: first, effective collaboration among stakeholders is essential for efficient and coordinated crisis response; second, social computing facilitates interaction, information flow, and collaboration among stakeholders. We detail the key components of our system design, highlighting its potential to support decision-making, resource allocation, and communication among stakeholders. Finally, we provide examples of how our system can be applied to contextualize crises to improve crisis management.

This requires the creation of user contextual profiles that combine user profiles with contextual information. However, there is a lack of research on the integration of contextual information with different user profiles. This study aims to address this gap by designing a user contextual profile ontology that considers both user profiles and contextual information on each profile. Specifically, we present a design and development of the user contextual profile ontology with a focus on the vehicle sales domain. Our designed ontology serves as a structural foundation for standardizing the representation of user profiles and contextual information, enhancing the system's ability to capture user preferences and contextual information of the user accurately. Moreover, we illustrate a case study using the User Contextual Profile Ontology in generating personalized recommendations for vehicle sales domain.

The use of knowledge graphs for information modeling has attracted interest in recent years. In recommender systems, items and users can be mapped and integrated into the knowledge graph, which can represent more links and relationships between users and items. Constraint-based recommender systems are based on the idea of explicitly exploiting deep recommendation knowledge through constraints to identify relevant recommendations. When combined with knowledge graphs, a constraint-based recommender system gains several benefits in terms of constraint sets. In this paper, we investigate and propose the construction of a constraint-based recommender system via RDF knowledge graphs applied to the vehicle purchase/sale domain. One way of framing these impulses of solidarity would be to be able to list in real-time the citizens/volunteers available with their vehicles (land, sea, air, etc.), to be able to geolocate them according to the risk areas to be evacuated, and adding them to the evacuation/rescue vehicles. Because it is difficult to propose an effective real-time operational system on the field in a real crisis situation, in this work, we propose to add a module for recommending driver/vehicle pairs (with their specificities) to a system of crisis management simulation. Geological modeling currently uses various computer-based applications. Data harmonization at the semantic level by means of ontologies is essential for making these applications interoperable. Since geo-modeling is currently part of multidisciplinary projects, semantic harmonization is required to model not only geological knowledge but also to integrate other domain knowledge at a general level. For this reason, the domain ontologies used for describing geological knowledge must be based on a sound ontology background to ensure the described geological knowledge is integratable. This paper presents a domain ontology: GeoFault, resting on the Basic Formal Ontology BFO (Arp et al., 2015) and the GeoCore ontology (Garcia et al., 2020). It models the knowledge related to geological faults. Faults are essential to various industries but are complex to model. They can be described as thin deformed rock volumes or as spatial arrangements resulting from the different displacements of geological blocks. At a broader scale, faults are currently described as mere surfaces, which are the components of complex fault arrays. The reference to the BFO and GeoCore package allows assigning these various fault elements to define ontology classes and their logical linkage within a consistent ontology framework. The GeoFault ontology covers the core knowledge of faults 'strico sensu,' excluding ductile shear deformations. This considered vocabulary is essentially descriptive and related to regional to outcrop scales, excluding microscopic, orogenic, and tectonic plate structures. The ontology is molded in OWL 2, validated by competency questions with two use cases, and tested using an in-house ontology-driven data entry application. The work of GeoFault provides a solid framework for disambiguating fault knowledge and a foundation of fault data integration for the applications and the users.

Recently, the term explainable AI became known as an approach to produce models from artificial intelligence which allow interpretation. Since a long time, there are models of symbolic regression in use that are perfectly explainable and mathematically tractable: in this contribution we demonstrate how to use symbolic regression methods to infer the optimal control of a dynamical system given one or several optimization criteria, or cost functions. In previous publications, network control was achieved by automatized machine learning control using genetic programming. Here, we focus on the subsequent analysis of the analytical expressions which result from the machine learning. In particular, we use AUTO to analyze the stability properties of the controlled oscillator system which served as our model. As a result, we show that there is a considerable advantage of explainable models over less accessible neural networks.

For this we consider systems perturbed by an external force. This allows us to not merely predict the time evolution of the system, but also study its dynamical properties, such as bifurcations, dynamical response curves, characteristic exponents etc. It is shown that they can be effectively estimated even in some regions of the state space where no input data were given. We consider several different oscillatory examples, including self-sustained, excitatory, time-delay and chaotic systems. Furthermore, with a statistical analysis we assess the amount of training data required for effective inference for two common recurrent neural network cells, the long short-term memory and the gated recurrent unit.

When I was smaller, a five megabyte fixed disk cost $5,000, a 300 bps modem cost hundreds of dollars, and communication links were intercepted by attaching devices to the target subscriber's local loop. From then to now there have been three great implosions: the cost of storage, the cost of bandwidth, and the cost of surveillance. The wake of the first two implosions sheared away most obstacles to using one-time pads to encrypt data in flight, and the final imposition -- I mean implosion -- now makes consideration of one-time pads a practical necessity.
So far as assurance of confidentiality is concerned, today's block ciphers and public key cryptosystems flunk the exam. I don't know how to recover an AES key or compute the discrete logarithm of an elliptic curve element, but there exists no proof that another cannot. Moreover, encrypted communications can be recorded and stored for later attack by algorithms and devices yet to be discovered. Equally concerning is that when a significant "break" is discovered for solving either puzzle, the safety of an entire planet's communication and data dissolves like instant pudding.
The world is unready to ingest so much pudding. We need balance in our cryptographic diet, and we need that balance now. In this paper, I discredit many myths concerning one-time pads, discuss practical steps to address perceived shortcomings, and shatter the notion that secure generation, distribution, and use of mammoth cryptographic keys cannot be practiced in every home, church, school, and business. I also discuss my own implementations, their capabilities and track record, and where they should lead.

Development of efficient business process models and determination of their characteristic properties are subject of intense interdisciplinary research. Here, we consider a business process model as a directed graph. Its nodes correspond to the units identified by the modeler and the link direction indicates the causal dependencies between units. It is of primary interest to obtain the stationary flow on such a directed graph, which corresponds to the steady-state of a firm during the business process. Following the ideas developed recently for the World Wide Web, we construct the Google matrix for our business process model and analyze its spectral properties. The importance of nodes is characterized by Page-Rank and recently proposed CheiRank and 2DRank, respectively. The results show that this two-dimensional ranking gives a significant information about the influence and communication properties of business model units. We argue that the Google matrix method, described here, provides a new efficient tool hel** companies to make their decisions on how to evolve in the exceedingly dynamic global market.
