New determination of the magnetic anisotropy from single crystals of (Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$B alloys are presented. The anomalous temperature dependence of the anisotropy constant is discussed using the standard Callen-Callen theory, which is shown to be insufficient to explain the experimental results. A more material specific study using first-principles calculations with disordered moments approach gives a much more consistent interpretation of the experimental data. Since the intrinsic properties of the alloys with $x=0.3-0.35$ are promising for permanent magnets applications, initial investigation of the extrinsic properties are described, in particular the crystallization of melt spun ribbons with Cu, Al, and Ti additions. Previous attempts at develo** a significant hysteresis have been unsuccessful in this system. Our melt-spinning experiment indicates that this system shows rapid crystallization.

The electronic structure and half-metallic gap of Co$_{2}$MnSi in the presence of crystallographic defects, partial Fe substitution for Mn, and thermal spin fluctuations are studied using the coherent potential approximation and the disordered local moment method. In the presence of 5\% Co or Mn vacancies the Fermi level shifts down to the minority-spin valence-band maximum. In contrast to NiMnSb, both types of Mn antisite defects in Co$_{2}$MnSi are strongly exchange-coupled to the host magnetization, and thermal spin fluctuations do not strongly affect the half-metallic gap. Partial substitution of Mn by Fe results in considerable changes in the Bloch spectral function near the Fermi level, which strongly deviate from the rigid-band picture. In particular, a light band with the Fe character crosses the Fermi level at about 50\% concentration. At room temperature, Fe substitution of up to 30\% slightly increases the spin polarization at the Fermi level.

Information can be stored in the antiferromagnetic domain state, while writing and readout can rely on the existence of the surface magnetization. It is predicted, based on first-principles calculations, that easy-axis anisotropy can be achieved in bulk CuMnAs by substituting a few percent of As atoms by Ge, Si, Al, or B. This effect is attributed to the changing occupation of certain electronic bands near the Fermi level induced by the hole do**. The calculated temperature dependence of the magnetic anisotropy does not exhibit any anomalies. Thin CuMnAs(001) films are also predicted to have perpendicular magnetic anisotropy.

Antiferromagnetic MnPt exhibits a spin reorientation transition (SRT) as a function of temperature, and off-stoichiometric Mn-Pt alloys also display SRTs as a function of concentration. The magnetocrystalline anisotropy in these alloys is studied using first-principles calculations based on the coherent potential approximation and the disordered local moment method. The anisotropy is fairly small and sensitive to the variations in composition and temperature due to the cancellation of large contributions from different parts of the Brillouin zone. Concentration and temperature-driven SRTs are found in reasonable agreement with experimental data. Contributions from specific band-structure features are identified and used to explain the origin of the SRTs.

Bulk Au-Fe alloys separate into Au-based fcc and Fe-based bcc phases, but L1$_0$ and L1$_2$ orderings were reported in single-phase Au-Fe nanoparticles. Motivated by these observations, we study the structural and ordering energetics in this alloy by combining density functional theory (DFT) calculations with effective Hamiltonian techniques: a cluster expansion with structural filters, and the configuration-dependent lattice deformation model. The phase separation tendency in Au-Fe persists even if the fcc-bcc decomposition is suppressed. The relative stability of disordered bcc and fcc phases observed in nanoparticles is reproduced, but the fully ordered L1$_0$ AuFe, L1$_2$ Au$_3$Fe, and L1$_2$ AuFe$_3$ structures are unstable in DFT. However, a tendency to form concentration waves at the corresponding [001] ordering vector is revealed in nearly-random alloys in a certain range of concentrations. This incipient ordering requires enrichment by Fe relative to the equiatomic composition, which may occur in the core of a nanoparticle due to the segregation of Au to the surface. Effects of magnetism on the chemical ordering are also discussed.

Electronic structure calculations are used to examine the magnetic properties of Fe$_2$P-based alloys and the mechanisms through which the Curie temperature and magnetocrystalline anisotropy can be optimized for specific applications. It is found that at elevated temperatures the magnetic interaction in pure Fe$_2$P develops a pronounced two-dimensional character due to the suppression of the magnetization in one of the sublattices, but the interlayer coupling is very sensitive to band filling and structural distortions. This feature suggests a natural explanation of the observed sharp enhancement of the Curie temperature by alloying with multiple elements, such as Co, Ni, Si, and B. The magnetocrystalline anisotropy is also tunable by electron do**, reaching a maximum near the electron count of pure Fe$_2$P. These findings enable the optimization of the alloy content, suggesting co-alloying of Fe$_2$P with Co (or Ni) and Si as a strategy for maximizing the magnetocrystalline anisotropy at and above room temperature.

The origins of the anomalous temperature dependence of magnetocrystalline anisotropy in (Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$B alloys are elucidated using first-principles calculations within the disordered local moment model. Excellent agreement with experimental data is obtained. The anomalies are associated with the changes in band occupations due to Stoner-like band shifts and with the selective suppression of spin-orbit "hot spots" by thermal spin fluctuations. Under certain conditions, the anisotropy can increase, rather than decrease, with decreasing magnetization due to these peculiar electronic mechanisms, which contrast starkly with those assumed in existing models.

The harmonic Kanzaki-Krivoglaz-Khachaturyan model of strain-induced interaction is generalized to concentrated size-mismatched alloys and adapted to first-principles calculations. The configuration dependence of both Kanzaki forces and force constants is represented by real-space cluster expansions that can be constructed based on the calculated forces. The model is implemented for the fcc lattice and applied to Cu$_{1-x}$Au$_x$ and Fe$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$ alloys for concentrations $x=0.25$, 0.5, and 0.75. The asymmetry between the $3d$ and $5d$ elements leads to large quadratic terms in the occupation-number expansion of the Kanzaki forces and thereby to strongly non-pairwise long-range interaction. The main advantage of the full configuration-dependent lattice deformation model is its ability to capture this singular many-body interaction. The roles of ordering striction and anharmonicity in Cu-Au and Fe-Pt alloys are assessed. Although the harmonic force constants defined with respect to the unrelaxed lattice are unsuitable for the calculation of the vibrational entropies, the phonon spectra for ordered and disordered alloys are found to be in good agreement with experimental data. The model is further adapted to concentration wave analysis and Monte Carlo simulations by means of an auxiliary multi-parametric real-space cluster expansion, which is used to find the ordering temperatures. Good agreement with experiment is found for all systems except CuAu$_3$ (due to the known failure of the generalized gradient approximation) and FePt$_3$, where the discrepancy is likely due to the neglect of magnetic disorder.

The earlier-suggested master equation approach is used to develop the consistent statistical theory of diffusion in alloys using the five-frequency model of FCC alloys as an example. Expressions for the Onsager coefficients in terms of microscopic interatomic interactions and some statistical averages are presented. We discuss methods of calculations of these averages using both the mean-field and the pair-cluster approximation to describe influence of vacancy-solute and solute-solute interactions, and both the nearest-neighbor and the second-shell approximation to describe vacancy correlation effects. The methods developed are used for calculations of enhancement factors which determine the concentration dependence of tracer self-diffusion and tracer solute diffusion in dilute FCC alloys. For the tracer self-diffusion, we show that some significant contribution to the enhancement factor related to the thermodynamic activity of vacancies was missed in the previous treatments of this problem. It implies that the most of existing estimates of parameters of the five-frequency model for real alloys should be revised. For the tracer solute diffusion, the expression for the enhancement factor seems to be presented for the first time. The results obtained are used to estimate the microscopic parameters important for diffusion, including the vacancy-solute interaction, in several FCC alloys for which necessary experimental data are available.

Kinetics of homogeneous nucleation and growth of copper precipitates under electron irradiation of Fe_{1-x}Cu_x alloys at concentrations x from 0.06 at.% to 0.4 at.% and temperatures T from 290 to 450C is studied using the kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) simulations and the statistical theory of nucleation (STN). The conventional assumption about the similarity of mechanisms of precipitation under electron irradiation and during thermal aging is adopted. The earlier-developed ab initio model of interactions in Fe-Cu alloys is used for both the KMC simulations and the STN calculations. Values of the nucleation barrier F_c and the prefactor J_0 in the Zeldovich-Volmer relation for the nucleation rate J are calculated for a number of concentrations and temperatures. For the dilute alloys with x less then 0.2%, the STN and the KMC results for the nucleation barrier F_c do virtually coincide with each other, which seems to confirm a high reliability of the STN for this problem. The STN calculations are also used to estimate the temperature dependencies of concentrations which correspond to the homogeneous or the heterogeneous precipitation limit and both dependencies are found to be rather sharp.

The earlier-developed ab initio model and the kinetic Monte Carlo method (KMCM) are used to simulate precipitation in a number of iron-copper alloys with different copper concentrations x and temperatures T. The same simulations are also made using the improved version of the earlier-suggested stochastic statistical method (SSM). The results obtained enable us to make a number of general conclusions about the dependencies of the decomposition kinetics in Fe-Cu alloys on x and T. We also show that the SSM describes the precipitation kinetics in a fair agreement with the KMCM, and employing the SSM in conjunction with the KMCM enables us to extend the KMC simulations to the longer evolution times. The results of simulations seem to agree with available experimental data for Fe-Cu alloys within statistical errors of simulations and the scatter of experimental results. Comparison of results of simulations to experiments for some multicomponent Fe-Cu-based alloys enables us to make certain conclusions about the influence of alloying elements in these alloys on the precipitation kinetics at different stages of evolution.

Basic equations of diffusional kinetics in alloys are statistically derived using the master equation approach. To describe diffusional transformations in substitution alloys, we derive the "quasi-equilibrium" kinetic equation which generalizes its earlier versions by taking into account possible "interaction renormalization" effects. For the interstitial alloys Me-X, we derive the explicit expression for the diffusivity D of an interstitial atom X which notably differs from those used in previous phenomenological treatments. This microscopic expression for D is applied to describe the diffusion of carbon in austenite basing on some simple models of carbon-carbon interaction. The results obtained enable us to make certain conclusions about the real form of these interactions, and about the scale of the "transition state entropy" for diffusion of carbon in austenite.
