A single photodetector with tunable detection wavelengths and polarization sensitivity can potentially be harnessed for diverse optical applications ranging from imaging and sensing to telecommunications. Such a device will require the combination of multiple material systems with different structures, bandgaps, and photoelectrical responses, which is extremely difficult to engineer using traditional epitaxial films. Here, we develop a multi-functional and high-performance photosensor using all van der Waals materials. The device features a gate-tunable spectral response that is switchable between near-infrared/visible and short-/mid-wave infrared, as well as broadband operation, at room temperature. The linear polarization sensitivity in the telecommunications O-band can also be directly modulated between horizontal, vertical, and nonpolarizing modes. These effects originate from the balance of photocurrent generation in two of the active layers that can be manipulated by an electric field. The photodetector features high detectivity (>109 cmHz1/2W-1) together with fast operation speed (~ 1 MHz) and can be further exploited for dual visible and infrared imaging.

With extensive variational simulations, dissipative quantum phase transitions in the sub-Ohmic spin-boson model are numerically studied in a dense limit of environmental modes. By employing a generalized trial wave function composed of coherent-state expansions, transition points and critical exponents are accurately determined for various spectral exponents, demonstrating excellent agreement with those obtained by other sophisticated numerical techniques. Besides, the quantum-to-classical correspondence is fully confirmed over the entire sub-Ohmic range, compared with theoretical predictions of the long-range Ising model. Mean-field and non-mean-field critical behaviors are found in the deep and shallow sub-Ohmic regimes, respectively, and distinct physical mechanisms of them are uncovered.

With large-scale Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate the nonsteady relaxation at the dynamic depinning transition in the two-dimensional Gaussian random-field Ising model. The dynamic scaling behavior is carefully analyzed, and the transition fields as well as static and dynamic exponents are accurately determined based on the short-time dynamic scaling form. Different from the usual assumption, two distinguished growth processes of spatial correlation lengths for the velocity and height of the domain wall are found. Thus, the universality class of the depinning transition is established, which significantly differs from that of the quenched disorder equation but agrees with that of the recent experiment as well as other simulations works. Under the influence of the mesoscopic time regime, the crossover from the second-order phase transition to the first-order one is confirmed in the weak-disorder regime, yielding an abnormal disorder-dependent nature of the criticality.

Studying the upper critical field ($μ_0$$H$$_{\rm{c2}}$) and its anisotropy of superconductors is of great importance because it can provide an unusual insight into the pair-breaking mechanism. Since Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ exhibits the high $μ_0$$H$$_{\rm{c2}}$ and small anisotropic superconductivity, it has attracted considerable attention. However, some issues related to $μ_0$$H$$_{\rm{c2}}$ are still unknown, including the effect of excess Fe content on $μ_0$$H$$_{\rm{c2}}$ behavior and the origin of the crossover of the $μ_0H_{\rm{c2}}^c $ -- $ T$ and $μ_0H_{\rm{c2}}^{ab}$ -- $T$ curves. In this work, the value of $μ_0$$H$$_{\rm{c2}}$ of Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{0.6}$Se$_{0.4}$ single crystals with controlled amounts of excess Fe was obtained by resistivity measurements over a wide range of temperatures down to $\sim$ 1.5 K, and magnetic fields up to $\sim$ 60 T. The crossover of the $μ_0H_{\rm{c2}}^c $ -- $ T$ and $μ_0H_{\rm{c2}}^{ab}$ -- $T$ curves was found to be independent of the excess Fe content. The angle dependence of $μ_0H_{\rm{c2}}$ was also checked. The $μ_0H_{\rm{c2}}(θ)$ symmetry at higher temperature near $T_c$ could be fitted by anisotropic G-L model, and novel fourfold symmetry of $μ_0H_{\rm{c2}}$ at lower temperature was found. Based on our spin-locking pairing model, the crossover behavior originates from the anisotropic spin-paramagnetic effect, and the novel fourfold symmetry of $μ_0H_{\rm{c2}}$ could be understood by our extended anisotropic G-L model.

Superconducting transition temperature (Tc) and critical current density (Jc) are two key factors that are not only crucial for probing high-temperature superconducting mechanisms, but also for practical applications. The simple crystal structure of FeSe is very favorable for the fabrication of thin films and wires, but its application is limited by the relatively low Tc and small Jc. A previous study has found that the Tc of FeSe can be significantly enhanced over 40 K by using the protonation method. Here, we present a systematic study of Jc and vortex properties of H+-intercalated FeSe (Hx-FeSe) single crystals. The value of Jc for Hx-FeSe single crystal is significantly enhanced, exceeding 1.3*10^6 A/cm2 at 4 K, which is more than two orders of magnitude larger than 1.1*10^4 A/cm2 of pristine FeSe. The vortex pinning mechanism of Hx-FeSe is found to be surface pinning, which is different from the dominant strong point-like pinning in pristine FeSe. Moreover, the systematic study of the vortex phase transition and the underlying mechanism provides a wealth of information for the vortex phase diagram of Hx-FeSe single crystal. Our results confirm that the introduction of H+ intercalations into FeSe not only enhances the Tc, but also significantly increases the value of Jc, which is favorable for practical applications.

The second magnetization peak (SMP) appears in most superconductors and is crucial for the understanding of vortex physics as well as the application. Although it is well known that the SMP is related to the type and quantity of disorder/defects, the mechanism has not been universally understood. In this work, we selected three stoichiometric superconducting RbCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$ single crystals with identical superconducting critical temperature $T_c$ $\sim$ 31 K and similar self-field critical current density $J_c$, but with different amounts of disorder/defects, to study the SMP effect. It is found that only the sample S2 with a moderate disorder/defects shows a significant SMP effect. The evolution of the normalized pinning force density $f_p$ demonstrates that the dominant pinning mechanism changes from weak pinning at low temperatures to strong pinning at high temperatures. The microstructure study for sample S2 reveals some expanded Ca$_2$F$_2$ layers and dislocation defects in RbFe$_2$As$_2$ layers. The normalized magnetic relaxation results indicate that the SMP is strongly associated with the elastic to plastic (E-P) vortex transition. As temperature increases, the SMP gradually evolves into a step-like shape and then becomes a sharp peak near the irreversibility field similar to what is usually observed in low-temperature superconductors. Our findings connect the low field SMP of high-temperature superconductors and the high field peak of low-temperature superconductors, revealing the possible universal origin related to the E-P phase transition.

We study two configurations in floating sheets where the solid-vapor-liquid contact line is a straight line and a circle, respectively. In the former case, a rectangular sheet is lifted at its edge, whereas in the latter a gas bubble is injected beneath a floating sheet. We show that in both geometries the derivative of the sheet's curvature is discontinuous. We demonstrate that the boundary condition at the contact is identical in these two geometries, even though the shape of the contact line and the stress distribution in the sheet are sharply different.

We show that proceeding in Laplace space is unpractical and employ instead renewal processes to work directly in real time. We first validate our approach against data produced using agent-based simulations. This allows us to identify the length and time scales required for an accurate measurement of the motility parameters, including tumbling frequency and swim speed. We compare different models for the run-and-tumble dynamics by accounting for speed variability at the single-cell and population level, respectively. Finally, we apply our approach to experimental data on wild-type Escherichia coli obtained using differential dynamic microscopy.

Do high-entropy alloys and ceramics have their grain boundary (GB) counterparts? As the concept of high-entropy grain boundaries (HEGBs) was initially proposed in 2016, this article provides the first complete and rigorous discussion of the underlying interfacial thermodynamics. A simplified segregation model can illustrate both GB and bulk high-entropy effects, which reduce GB energy with increasing temperature for saturated multicomponent (conventional and high-entropy) alloys. HEGBs can be utilized to stabilize nanocrystalline alloys at high temperatures via thermodynamic and kinetic effects. GB structural disordering and transitions offer further opportunities to attain higher effective GB entropies. Future perspective is discussed.

By employing the spin-boson model in a dense limit of environmental modes, quantum entanglement and correlation of sub-Ohmic and Ohmic baths for dissipative quantum phase transitions are numerically investigated based on the variational principle. With several measures borrowed from quantum information theory, three different types of singularities are found for the first-order, second-order, and Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transitions, respectively, and the values of transition points and critical exponents are accurately determined. Besides, the scaling form of the quantum discord in the Ohmic case is identified, quite different from that in the sub-Ohmic regime. In a two-spin model, two distinct behaviors of the quantum discord are uncovered: one is related to the quantum entanglement between two spins and the other is decided by the correlation function in the position space rather than the entanglement.

The ability to perform broadband optical spectroscopy with sub-diffraction-limit resolution is highly sought-after for a wide range of critical applications. However, sophisticated tip-enhanced techniques are currently required to achieve this goal. We bypass this challenge by demonstrating an extremely broadband photodetector based on a two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals heterostructure that is sensitive to light across over a decade in energy from the mid-infrared (MIR) to deep-ultraviolet (DUV) at room temperature. The devices feature high detectivity (> 10^9 cm Hz^1/2 W^-1) together with high bandwidth (2.1 MHz). The active area can be further miniaturized to submicron dimensions, far below the diffraction limit for the longest detectable wavelength of 4.1 um, enabling such devices for facile measurements of local optical properties on atomic-layer-thickness samples placed in close proximity. This work can lead to the development of low-cost and high-throughput photosensors for hyperspectral imaging at the nanoscale.

We report on a synthesis protocol, experimental characterization and theoretical modeling of active pulsatile Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) hydrogels. Our two-step synthesis technique allows independent optimization of the geometry, the chemical, and the mechanical properties of BZ gels. We identify the role of the surrounding medium chemistry and gel radius for the occurrence of BZ gel oscillations, quantified by the Damkohler number, ratio of chemical reaction to diffusion rates. Tuning the BZ gel size to maximize its chemomechanical oscillation amplitude, we find that its oscillatory strain amplitude is limited by the timescale of gel swelling relative to the chemical oscillation period. Our experimental findings are in good agreement with a Vanag-Epstein model of BZ chemistry and a Tanaka Fillmore theory of gel swelling dynamics.

The superconducting transition temperature, $T_{\rm{c}}$, of FeSe can be significantly enhanced several-fold by applying pressure, electron do**, intercalating spacing layer, and reducing dimensionality. Various ordered electronic phases, such as nematicity and spin density waves, have also been observed accompanying high-$T_{\rm{c}}$ superconductivity. Investigation on the evolution of the electronic structure with $T_{\rm{c}}$ is essential to understanding electronic behavior and high-$T_{\rm{c}}$ superconductivity in FeSe and its derived superconductors. In this report, we have found a series of discrete superconducting phases, with a maximum $T_{\rm{c}}$ up to 44 K, in H$^+$-intercalated FeSe single crystals using an ionic liquid gating method. Accompanied with the increase of $T_{\rm{c}}$, suppression of the nematic phase and evolution from non-Fermi-liquid to Fermi-liquid behavior was observed. An abrupt change in the Fermi surface topology was proposed to explain the discrete superconducting phases. A band structure that favors the high-$T_{\rm{c}}$ superconducting phase was also revealed.

We report a systematic study of the superconducting (SC) and normal-state anisotropy of Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{0.6}$Se$_{0.4}$ single crystals with controlled amounts of excess Fe ($y$ = 0, 0.07, and 0.14). The SC state anisotropy $γ_{H}$ was obtained by measuring the upper critical fields under high magnetic fields over 50 T for both $H\parallel ab$ and $H\parallel c$. On the other hand, the normal state anisotropy $γ_ρ$ was obtained by measuring the resistivity with current flowing in the $ab$ plane ($ρ_{ab}$) and along the $c$ axis ($ρ_c$). To precisely measure $ρ_{ab}$ and $ρ_c$ in the same part of a specimen avoiding the variation dependent on pieces or parts, we adopt a new method using a micro-fabricated bridge with an additional neck part along $c$ axis. The $γ_{H}$ decreases from a value dependent on the amount of excess Fe at $T_{\rm{c}}$ to a common value $\sim$ 1 at 2 K. The different $γ_{H}$ at $T_{\rm{c}}$ ($\sim$1.5 for $y$ = 0, and 2.5 for $y$ = 0.14) suggests that the anisotropy of effective mass $m_c^*/m_{ab}^*$ increases from $\sim$ 2.25 ($y$ = 0) to 6.25 ($y$ = 0.14) with the excess Fe. The almost isotropic $γ_{H}$ at low temperatures is due to the strong spin paramagnetic effect at $H\parallel ab$. By contrast, the $γ_ρ$ shows a much larger value of $\sim$ 17 ($y$ = 0) to $\sim$ 50 ($y$ = 0.14) at the temperature just above $T_{\rm{c}}$. Combined the results of $γ_{H}$ and $γ_ρ$ near $T_{\rm{c}}$, we found out that the discrepant anisotropies between the SC and normal states originates from a large anisotropy of scattering time $τ_{ab}$/$τ_c$ $\sim$ 7.8. The $τ_{ab}$/$τ_c$ is found to be independent of the excess Fe.

A systematics of grain boundary (GB) segregation transitions and critical phenomena has been derived to expand the classical GB segregation theory. Using twist GBs as an example, this study uncovers when GB layering vs. prewetting transitions should occur and how they are related to one another. Moreover, a novel descriptor, normalized segregation strength (phi_seg), is introduced. It can represent several factors that control GB segregation, including strain and bond energies, as well as misorientation for small-angle GBs (in a mean-field approximation), which had to be treated separately in prior models. In a strong segregation system with a large phi_seg, first-order layering transitions occur at low temperatures and become continuous above GB roughing temperatures. With reducing phi_seg, the layering transitions gradually merge and finally lump into prewetting transitions without quantized layer numbers, akin to Cahn's critical-point wetting model. Furthermore, GB complexion diagrams with universal characters are constructed as the GB counterpart to the classical exemplar of Pelton-Thompson regular-solution binary bulk phase diagrams.

When exposed to high magnetic fields, certain materials manifest an exotic superconducting (SC) phase that has attracted considerable attention. A proposed explanation for the origin of the high-field SC phase is the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state. This state is characterized by inhomogeneous superconductivity, where the Cooper pairs have finite center-of-mass momenta. Recently, the high-field SC phase was observed in FeSe, and it was deemed to originate from the FFLO state. Here, we synthesize FeSe single crystals with different levels of disorder. The level of disorder is expressed by the ratio of the mean free path to the coherence length and ranges between 35 and 1.2. The upper critical field \textit{B}$_{\rm{c}2}$ was obtained by both resistivity and magnetic torque measurements over a wide range of temperatures, which went as low as $\sim$0.5 K, and magnetic fields, which went up to $\sim$38 T along the \textit{c} axis and in the \textit{ab} plane. In the high-field region parallel to the \textit{ab} plane, an unusual SC phase was confirmed in all the crystals, and the phase was found to be robust against disorder. This result suggests that the high-field SC phase in FeSe is not a conventional FFLO state.

Therefore, the electronic properties of single crystals with $0 < x \leq 0.5$ are crucial for probing the evolution of those intriguing properties as well as their relations. However, this study is still left blank due to the lack of single crystals because of phase separation. Here, we report the synthesis, magnetization, electronic transport properties, and hydrostatic pressure effect of FeSe$_{0.67}$Te$_{0.33}$ single crystals free of phase separation. A structural (nematic) transition is visible at $T_{s} = 39$ K, below which the resistivity exhibits a Fermi-liquid behavior. Analysis of upper critical fields suggests that spin-paramagnetic effect should be taken into account for both $H \parallel c$ axis and $H \parallel ab$ plane. A crossover from the low-$H$ quadratic to the high-$H$ quasi-linear behavior is observed in the magnetoresistance, signifying the possible existence of Dirac-cone state. Besides, the strong temperature dependence of Hall coefficient, violation of (modified) Kohler's rule, and two-band model analysis indicate the multiband effects in FeSe$_{0.67}$Te$_{0.33}$ single crystals. Hydrostatic pressure measurements reveal that $T_{s}$ is quickly suppressed with pressure while $T_{c}$ is monotonically increased up to 2.31 GPa, indicating the competition between nematicity and superconductivity. No signature of magnetic order that has been detected in FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_{x}$ is observed. Our findings fill up the blank of the knowledge on the basic properties of FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_{x}$ system with low-Te concentrations.

We report the successful synthesis of FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_{x}$ single crystals with $x$ ranging from 0 to 1 via a hydrothermal method. A complete phase diagram of FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_{x}$ has been obtained based on resistivity and magnetization measurements. The nematicity is suppressed with increasing $x$, and a small superconducting dome appears within the nematic phase. Outside the nematic phase, the superconductivity is continuously suppressed and reaches a minimum $T_c$ at $x$ = 0.45; beyond this point, $T_c$ slowly increases until $x$ = 1. Intriguingly, an anomalous resistivity upturn with a characteristic temperature $T^*$ in the intermediate region of $0.31 \leq x \leq 0.71$ is observed. $T^{*}$ shows a dome-like behavior with a maximum value at $x$ = 0.45, which is opposite the evolution of $T_c$, indicating competition between $T^*$ and superconductivity. The origin of $T^*$ is discussed in detail. Furthermore, the normal state resistivity evolves from non-Fermi-liquid to Fermi-liquid behavior with S do** at low temperatures, accompanied by a reduction in electronic correlations. Our study addresses the lack of single crystals in the high-S do** region and provides a complete phase diagram, which will promote the study of relations among nematicity, superconductivity, and magnetism.

The superconducting transition temperature, $T_{\rm{c}}$, is found to be robust against disorders, which suggests that the pairing should be sign-preserved rather than sign-reversed.

Many emerging applications in microscale engineering rely on the fabrication of three-dimensional architectures in inorganic materials. Small-scale additive manufacturing (AM) aspires to provide flexible and facile access to these geometries. Yet, the synthesis of device-grade inorganic materials is still a key challenge towards the implementation of AM in microfabrication. Here, we present a comprehensive overview of the microstructural and mechanical properties of metals fabricated by most state-of-the-art AM methods that offer a spatial resolution $\leq$10$μ$m. Standardized sets of samples were studied by cross-sectional electron microscopy, nanoindentation and microcompression. We show that current microscale AM techniques synthesize metals with a wide range of microstructures and elastic and plastic properties, including materials of dense and crystalline microstructure with excellent mechanical properties that compare well to those of thin-film nanocrystalline materials. The large variation in materials performance can be related to the individual microstructure, which in turn is coupled to the various physico-chemical principles exploited by the different printing methods. The study provides practical guidelines for users of small-scale additive methods and establishes a baseline for the future optimization of the properties of printed metallic objects $-$ a significant step towards the potential establishment of AM techniques in microfabrication.

In recent years, static and dynamic properties of non-$180^\circ$ domain walls in magnetic materials have attracted a great deal of interest. In this paper, spin-reorientation critical dynamics in the two-dimensional XY model is investigated with Monte Carlo simulations and theoretical analyses based on the Langevin equation. At the Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition, dynamic scaling behaviors of the magnetization and the two-time correlation function are carefully analyzed, and critical exponents are accurately determined. When the initial value of the angle between adjacent domains is slightly lower than $π$, a critical exponent is introduced to characterize the abnormal power-law increase of the magnetization in the horizontal direction inside the domain interface, which is measured to be $ψ=0.0568(8)$. Besides, the relation $ψ=η/2z$ is analytically deduced from the Langevin dynamics in the long-wavelength approximation, well consistent with numerical results.

By means of a trial wave function, the multi-D$_1$ ansatz, extensive variational calculations with more than ten thousand parameters have been carried out to study quantum phase transitions in the ground states of a two-impurity system embedded in a common Ohmic bath of bosons. Quantum criticality in both the impurity system and the Ohmic bosonic bath is investigated with relevant transition points and critical exponents determined accurately. With the linear grid of the Ohmic spectral density, our numerical calculations produce a much better description of the ground states with lower energies than other calculations employing a logarithmic grid with a discretization factor far greater than unity. It offers a possible solution to the considerable controversy on the critical coupling in the literature. Moreover, the ground-state phase transition is inferred to be of first order in the presence of strong antiferromagnetic spin-spin couplin}, at variance with that in the ferromagnetic regime or in the absence of spin-spin coupling where the transition belongs to the Kosterlitz-Thouless universality class.

By employing the Dirac-Frenkel time-dependent variational principle, we study the dynamical properties of the Holstein molecular crystal model with diagonal and off-diagonal exciton-phonon coupling. A linear combination of the Davydov D$_1$ (D$_2$) Anstaz, referred to as the multi-D$_1$ Ansatz (multi-D$_2$ Ansatz), is used as the trial state with enhanced accuracy but without sacrificing efficiency. The time evolution of the exciton probability is found to be in perfect agreement with that of the hierarchy equations of motion, demonstrating the promise the multiple Davydov trial states hold as an efficient, robust description of dynamics of complex quantum systems. In addition to the linear absorption spectra computed for both diagonal and off-diagonal cases, for the first time, $2$D spectra have been calculated for systems with off-diagonal exciton-phonon coupling by employing the multiple $D_2$ Ansatz to compute the nonlinear response function, testifying to the great potential of the multiple $D_2$ Ansatz for fast, accurate implementation of multidimensional spectroscopy. It is found that the signal exhibits a single peak for weak off-diagonal coupling, while a vibronic multi-peak structure appears for strong off-diagonal coupling.

High-entropy intermetallic compounds (HEICs) were fabricated by mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering to fill a knowledge gap between the traditional high-entropy alloys (HEAs) and emerging high-entropy ceramics (HECs). Notably, several four- or five-component equimolar aluminides, such as the B2-phase (Fe1/5Co1/5Ni1/5Mn1/5Cu1/5)Al, have been made into single-phase HEICs for the first time. Thermodynamic modeling and a reversible, temperature-dependent, phase-stability experiment suggest that such B2-phase HEICs are entropy-stabilized phases. The structure of these HEICs resembles that of HECs with high-entropy mixing of four or five elements of nearly equal fractions in one and only one sublattice, but with significant (~10%) anti-site defects (differing from typical HECs). A new phase stability rule for forming single B2-phase HEICs is proposed. Five additional HEICs of predominantly D022 phases have also been made. This study broadens the families of equimolar, single-phase, high-entropy materials that have been successfully fabricated.

Non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) phenomena associated with correlation effects have been widely observed in the phase diagrams of unconventional superconducting families. Exploration of the correlation between the normal state NFL, regardless of its microscopic origins, and the superconductivity has been argued as a key to unveiling the mystery of the high-Tc pairing mechanism. Here we systematically investigate the pressure-dependent in-plane resistivity and Hall coefficient (RH ) of a high-quality 112-type Fe-based superconductor Ca1-xLaxFe1-yCoyAs2 (x = 0.2,y = 0.02). With increasing pressure, the normal-state resistivity of the studied sample exhibits a pronounced crossover from non-Fermi-liquid to Fermi-liquid behaviors. Accompanied with this crossover, Tc is gradually suppressed. In parallel, the extremum in the Hall coefficient RH (T ) curve, possibly due to anisotropic scattering induced by spin fluctuations, is also gradually suppressed. The symbiosis of NFL and superconductivity implies that these two phenomena are intimately related. Further study on the pressure-dependent upper critical field reveals that the two-band effects are also gradually weakened with increasing pressure and reduced to the one-band Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg limit in the low-Tc regime. Overall, our paper supports the picture that NFL, multigap, and extreme RH (T ) are all of the same magnetic origin, i.e., the spin fluctuations in the 112 iron arsenide superconductors.

With this device, we study gate-tunable acoustoelectric transport in an exfoliated monolayer graphene device, measuring the voltage created as high-frequency surface acoustic waves dynamically drive the graphene charge carriers, the density of which we simultaneously control with a silicon back-gate. We demonstrate ambipolar dependence of the acoustoelectric signal, as expected from the sign of the graphene charge carriers. We observe a marked reduction in the magnitude of the acoustoelectric signal over a well-defined range of density in the vicinity of charge neutrality, which we attribute to a spatially heterogeneous charge-disorder landscape not directly revealed by conventional transport measurements.

Also, upon cooling cycle near $T_{\rm FM}$ we observe the first-order transition from the short period domain structure, which appears in the Meissner state, into the long period domain structure with spontaneous vortices. It is the first experimental observation of this scenario in the ferromagnetic superconductors. Low-temperature phase is characterized by much larger domains in V-AV state and peculiar branched striped structures at the surface, which are typical for uniaxial ferromagnets with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA). The domain wall parameters at various temperatures are estimated.

High-quality single crystal of Ca0.8La0.2Fe0.98Co0.02As2 has been successfully synthesized using a self-flux method. The magnetization measurement reveals a second peak effect and high critical current density exceeding 2*10^6 A/cm2 at 5 K(self-field). The upper critical field anisotropy was systematically studied by measuring the electrical resistivity under various magnetic fields and angles. The angle dependent magnetoresistance, by choosing an appropriate anisotropy parameter within the framework of the anisotropic Ginzburg Landau (AGL) theory, can be scaled onto one single curve. In the normal state, the negative Hall coefficient shows strong but nonmonotonic T-dependence through a minimum at 175 K. Moreover, it is shown that the magnetoresistance apparently violates the semiclassical Kohler's rule below 175 K but can be well scaled by the Hall angle instead. This suggests either the change of carriers with T or the exotic anisotropic scattering in the system.

With the developed "extended Monte Calro" (EMC) algorithm, we have studied the depinning transition in Ising-type lattice models by extensive numerical simulations, taking the random-field Ising model with a driving field and the driven bond-diluted Ising model as examples. In comparison with the usual Monte Carlo method, the EMC algorithm exhibits greater efficiency of the simulations. Based on the short-time dynamic scaling form, both the transition field and critical exponents of the depinning transition are determined accurately via the large-scale simulations with the lattice size up to L = 8 912, significantly refining the results in earlier literature. In the strong-disorder regime, a new universality class of the Ising-type lattice model is unveiled with the exponents β = 0.304(5), ν = 1.32(3), z = 1.12(1), and ζ = 0.90(1), quite different from that of the quenched Edwards-Wilkinson equation.

The new trial state by the name of the "multi-D$_2$ Ansatz" is a linear combination of Davydov D$_2$ trial states, and its validity is carefully examined by quantifying how faithfully it follows the Schrödinger equation. Considerable improvements in accuracy have been demonstrated in comparison with the usual Davydov trial states, i.e., the single D$_1$ and D$_2$ Ansätze. With an increase in the number of the Davydov D$_2$ trial states in the multi-D$_2$ Ansatz, deviation from the exact Schrödinger dynamics is gradually diminished, leading to a numerically exact solution to the Schrödinger equation.

The Seebeck coefficient $S(T)$ in the temperature range 5K$\leq$$T$$\leq$350K was found to be negative in sign, modest in magnitude and non-linear in temperature. In addition, the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ under hydrostatic pressure shows a marked non-monotonic variation, decreasing initially with the applied pressure up to $P_c$$\sim$5-10 kbar but then rising with further pressurization. The underlying physical mechanisms of all these findings have been discussed.

The linear magnetoresistance observed in Ta$_4$Pd$_3$Te$_{16}$ is found to be overall inconsistent with the interpretations based on the Dirac fermions in the quantum limit, charge conductivity fluctuations as well as quantum electron-electron interference. Moreover, it is observed that the Kohler's rule, regardless of the field orientations, is violated in its normal state. This result suggests the loss of charge carriers in the normal state of this chain-containing compound, due presumably to the charge-density-wave fluctuations.

A generalized trial wave function termed as the "multi-D1 Ansatz" has been developed to study the ground state of the spin-boson model with simultaneous diagonal and off-diagonal coupling in the sub-Ohmic regime. Ground-state properties including the energy and the spin polarization are investigated, and the results are consistent with those from the exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group approaches for the cases involving two oscillators and two baths described by a continuous spectral density function. Breakdown of the rotational and parity symmetries along the continuous quantum phase transition separating the localized phase from the critical phase has been uncovered. Moreover, the phase boundary is determined accurately with the corresponding symmetry parameters of the rotational and parity symmetries. A critical value of the spectral exponent s* = 0.49(1) is predicted in the weak coupling limit, which is in agreement with the mean-field prediction of 1/2, but much smaller than the earlier literature estimate of 0.75(1).

By employing the variational approach, density matrix renormalization group (DMRG), exact diagonalization as well as symmetry and mean-field analyses, the ground state properties of the two-bath spin boson model with simultaneous diagonal and off-diagonal coupling are systematically studied in the sub-Ohmic regime. A novel quantum phase transition from a doubly degenerate "localized phase" to the other doubly degenerate "delocalized phase" is uncovered. Via the multi-D1 ansatz as the variational wave function, transition points are determined accurately, consistent with the results from DMRG and exact diagonalization. An effective spatial dimension $d_{eff} = 2.37(6)$ is then estimated, which is found to be compatible with the mean-field prediction. Furthermore, the quantum phase transition is inferred to be of first order for the baths described by a continuous spectral density function. In the case of single mode, however, the transition is softened.

By systematic chemical substitution of Pt and Ni in the newly-discovered superconductor Nb$_2$PdS$_5$ ($T_c\sim$6 K), we study the evolution of its superconducting properties with do**, focussing on the behavior of the upper critical field $H_{c2}$. In contrast to the previous results of Se do** on S sites, superconductivity is found to be rather robust against the Pt and Ni dopants on the one-dimensional Pd chains. Most strikingly, the reduced $H_{c2}$, i.e., the ratio of $H_{c2}/T_c$, is seen to be significantly enhanced by the heavier Pt do** but suppressed in the Ni-doped counterparts, distinct from the nearly constant value in the Se doped samples. Our findings therefore suggest that the upper critical field of this system can be modified in a tunable fashion by chemical do** on the Pd chains with elements of varying mass numbers. The spin-orbit coupling on the Pd sites, by inference, should play an important role in the observed superconductivity and on the large upper critical field beyond the Pauli pair-breaking field.

Electronic nematics, an electron orientational order which breaks the underlying rotational symmetry, have been observed in iron pnictide superconductors several years after their discovery. However, the universality of the do** dependence of this phase and its relation to other symmetry-breaking orders (such as superconductivity) in distinct families of iron pnictides, remain outstanding questions. Here we use torque magnetometry as a probe to study the rotational symmetry breaking in EuFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ without introducing external pressure. The nematic phase is found to proliferate well above the structural transition and to persist into the superconducting regime at optimal do**, after which it becomes absent or very weak, in sharp contrast to the behaviour observed in BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$. These measurements suggest a putative quantum nematic transition near optimal do** under the superconducting dome.

With Monte Carlo simulations, the nonsteady dynamics properties of a domain wall have been systematically investigated for the thermally activated creep state under an alternating driving field. Taking the driven random-field Ising model in two dimensions as an example, two distinct growth stages of the domain interface are identified with both the correlation length and roughness function. One stage belongs to the universality class of the random depositions, and the other to that of the quenched Edwards-Wilkinson equation. In the latter case, due to the dynamic effect of overhangs, the domain interface may exhibit an intrinsic anomalous scaling behavior, different from that of the quenched Edwards-Wilkinson equation.

In this paper, we systematically study the electron do** effect in a new BiS2-based system Sr1-xLaxFBiS2(0<x<0.7) through multiple techniques of X-ray diffraction, electrical transport, magnetic susceptibility, and Hall effect measurements. The parent compound SrFBiS2 is found to possess a semiconducting-like ground state, with thermally activation energy Eg=38 meV. By the partial substitution of La for Sr, superconductivity emerges when x > 0.3, reaching its maximal superconducting transition temperature Tc=3.5 K at x=0.55. In the normal state of superconducting samples, it is clearly seen that there exists a crossover from metallic to semiconducting state below a temperature Tmin, which shifts to lower temperatures with increasing La content. Based on these measurements, the associated electronic phase diagram of Sr1-xLaxFBiS2 system has thus been established.

We study the isovalent substitution effect by partially introducing Se on S site in the newly discovered superconductor Nb$_2$PdS$_5$ ($T_c\sim$6 K) whose upper critical field is found to be far above its Pauli paramagnetic limit. In this Nb$_2$Pd(S$_{1-x}$Se$_x$)$_5$ (0$\leq$$x$$\leq$0.8) system, superconductivity is systematically suppressed by the Se concentration and ultimately disappears when $x\geq$ 0.5, after which a semiconducting-like ground state emerges. In spite of the considerably reduced $T_c$ with Se do**, the ratio of the upper critical field $H_{c2}$ to $T_c$, remains unaffected. Moreover, the size of the heat capacity jump at $T_c$ is smaller than that expected for a BCS superconductor, implying that a strong-coupling theory cannot be the origin of this large upper critical field. In addition, the low-lying quasiparticle excitations are consistent with a nodeless gap opening over the Fermi surface. These results combined impose severe constraints on any theory of exotic superconductivity in this system.

Based on the short-time dynamic approach, we determine the transition field and critical exponents. The results show that the critical exponents vary with the form of the random-field distribution and the strength of the random fields, and the roughening dynamics of the domain interface belongs to the new subclass with $ζ\neq ζ_{loc} \neq ζ_s$ and $ζ_{loc} \neq 1$. More importantly, we find that the transition field and critical exponents change with the initial orientations of the magnetization of the two ordered domains.

Taking the extended $J_1$-$J_2$ model as a minimal model, we investigate the finite-temperature magnetic phase transitions in a square lattice with a $\sqrt{5} \times \sqrt{5}$ vacancy superstructure by using large-scale Monte Carlo simulations. By the parallel tempering technique, the block spin checkerboard and stripe antiferromagnetic states are detected to be the groundstates for three representative sets of model parameters. The short-time dynamic approach is applied to accurately determine the critical temperature as well as the static and dynamic exponents. Our results indicate that the dramatic enhancement of the critical temperature as observed in experiments should be mainly due to a combination effect of the vacancy order and the block lattice contraction.

With Monte Carlo methods, we investigate the universality class of the depinning transition in the two-dimensional Ising model with quenched random fields. Based on the short-time dynamic approach, we accurately determine the depinning transition field and both static and dynamic critical exponents. The critical exponents vary significantly with the form and strength of the random fields, but exhibit independence on the updating schemes of the Monte Carlo algorithm. From the roughness exponents $ζ, ζ_{loc}$ and $ζ_s$, one may judge that the depinning transition of the random-field Ising model belongs to the new dynamic universality class with $ζ\neq ζ_{loc}\neq ζ_s$ and $ζ_{loc} \neq 1$. The crossover from the second-order phase transition to the first-order one is observed for the uniform distribution of the random fields, but it is not present for the Gaussian distribution.
