The magnetic propagation vector is found to be ${\bf k}=(1/2, 1/2, 0)$, an unusual wave-vector in the garnet structure. The associated complex magnetic structure highlights the role of exchange interactions in a nearly isotropic system dominated by dipolar interactions and finds echos with exotic structures theoretically proposed. Reduced values of the ordered moments may indicate significant quantum fluctuations in this effective spin-1/2 geometrically frustrated magnet.

FePSe3 is a collinear honeycomb antiferromagnet with an easy-axis anisotropy and large spins S=2. It belongs to a family of magnetic van der Waals materials, which recently attracted a considerable attention. In this work we present an experimental magneto-optical study of the low-energy excitation spectrum in FePSe3, together with its theoretical description. The observed response contains several types of magnon excitations. Two of them are conventional transverse magnons described by a classical theory of antiferromagnetic resonance. Two other modes are identified as multimagnon hexadecapole excitations with an anomalous g factor approximately equal to four times the g factor of a single Fe^2+ ion. These quasiparticles correspond to full reversals of iron spins that coherently propagate in the up-down antiferromagnetic structure. They constitute a novel type of collective excitations in anisotropic magnetic solids, called longitudinal magnons. Comparison between theory and experiment allows us to estimate the microscopic parameters of FePSe3 including exchange coupling constants and the single-ion anisotropy.

We study a Heisenberg-Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Hamiltonian on AB-stacked kagome bilayers at finite temperature. In a large portion of the parameter space, we observe three transitions upon cooling the system: a crossover from Heisenberg to the XY chiral paramagnet, Kosterlitz-Thouless transition to a chiral nematic phase, and a fluctuation-induced first-order transition to an Ising-like phase. We characterize the properties of phases numerically using Monte Carlo finite-size analysis. To further explain the nature of the observed phase transitions, we develop an analytical coarse-graining procedure that maps the Hamiltonian onto a generalized XY model on a triangular lattice. To leading order, this effective model includes both bilinear and biquadratic interactions and is able to correctly predict the two phase transitions. Lastly, we study the Ising fluctuations at low temperatures and establish that the origin of the first-order transition stems from the quasi-degenerate ring manifold in the momentum space.

Competition between exchange interactions and magnetocrystalline anisotropy may bring new magnetic states that are of great current interest. An applied hydrostatic pressure can further be used to tune their balance. In this work we investigate the magnetization process of a biaxial antiferromagnet in an external magnetic field applied along the easy axis. We find that the single metamagnetic transition of the Ising type observed in this material under ambient pressure transforms under hydrostatic pressure into two transitions, a first-order spin flop transition followed by a second order transition towards a polarized ferromagnetic state near saturation. This reversible tuning into a new magnetic phase is obtained in layered bulk CrSBr at low temperature by varying the interlayer distance using high hydrostatic pressure, which efficiently acts on the interlayer magnetic exchange, and is probed by magneto-optical spectroscopy.

As materials with suppressed ordering temperatures and enhanced ground state entropies, frustrated magnetic oxides are ideal candidates for cryogenic magnetocaloric refrigeration. While previous materials design has focused on tuning the magnetic moments, their interactions, and density of moments on the lattice, there has been relatively little attention to frustrated lattices. Prior theoretical work has shown that the magnetocaloric cooling rate at the saturation field is proportional to a macroscopic number of soft mode excitations that arise due to the classical ground state degeneracy. The number of these modes is directly determined by the geometry of the frustrating lattice. For corner-sharing geometries, the pyrochlore has 50\% more modes than the garnet and kagome lattices, whereas the edge-sharing \emph{fcc} has only a subextensive number of soft modes. Here, we study the role of soft modes in the magnetocaloric effect of four large-spin Gd$^{3+}$ ($L=0$, $J=S=7/2$) Heisenberg antiferromagnets on a kagome, garnet, pyrochlore, and \emph{fcc} lattice. By comparing measurements of the magnetic entropy change $ΔS_m$ of these materials at fields up to $9$~T with predictions using mean-field theory and Monte Carlo simulations, we are able to understand the relative importance of spin correlations and quantization effects. We observe that tuning the value of the nearest neighbor coupling has a more dominant contribution to the magnetocaloric entropy change in the liquid-He cooling regime ($2$-$20$~K), rather than tuning the number of soft mode excitations. Our results inform future materials design in terms of dimensionality, degree of magnetic frustration, and lattice geometry.

Our measurements reveal an excitation that closely resembles the antiferromagnetic resonance mode typical of easy-axis antiferromagnets, nevertheless, it displays an unusual, four-times larger Zeeman splitting in an applied magnetic field. We identify this excitation with an $|S_z|=4$ multipolar magnon -- a single-ion 4-magnon bound state -- that corresponds to a full reversal of a single magnetic moment of the Fe$^{2+}$ ion. We argue that condensation of multipolar magnons in large-spin materials with a strong magnetic anisotropy can produce new exotic states.

The field dependence of two resonance modes is measured in an applied field parallel to the three principal crystallographic directions, revealing anisotropies and magnetic transitions in this material. Low-temperature electron paramagnetic resonance measurements are performed on single crystals of LiY_{1-x}Gd_xF_4 with weak x=0.005 and moderate x=0.05 concentration of Gd ions. Modeling of the experimental spectra allows us to precisely determine microscopic parameters of the spin Hamiltonian of the parent LiGdF4 material, including the nearest-neighbor exchange constant. The obtained parameters are further tested by comparing a strongly anisotropic Curie-Weiss temperature obtained for LiGdF4 in our static magnetization measurements with theoretically computed values. We find a fine balance between principal magnetic interactions in LiGdF4, which results in a hidden magnetic frustration presumably leading to a delayed magnetic ordering and an enhanced magnetocaloric effect at low temperatures.

We provide strong evidence of the spin-nematic state in a paradigmatic ferro-antiferromagnetic $J_1$--$J_2$ model using analytical and density-matrix renormalization group methods. In zero field, the attraction of spin-flip pairs leads to a first-order transition and no nematic state, while pair-repulsion at larger $J_2$ stabilizes the nematic phase in a narrow region near the pair-condensation field. A devil's staircase of multi-pair condensates is conjectured for weak pair-attraction. A suppression of the spin-flip gap by many-body effects leads to an order-of-magnitude contraction of the nematic phase compared to naïve expectations. The proposed phase diagram should be broadly valid.

We study the nearest-neighbor Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a face-centered cubic lattice with arbitrary spin S. The model exhibits degenerate classical ground states including two collinear structures AF1 and AF3 described by different propagation vectors that are prime candidates for the quantum ground state. We compute the energy for each of the two states as a function of S using the spin-wave theory that includes magnon-magnon interaction in a self-consistent way and the numerical coupled cluster method. Our results unambiguously demonstrate that quantum fluctuations stabilize the AF1 state for realistic values of spin. Transition to the harmonic spin-wave result, which predicts the AF3 state, takes place only for S > 10. We also study quantum renormalization of the magnon spectra for both states as a function of spin.

We investigate analytically and numerically the classical ground states of frustrated Heisenberg models on pyrochlore and kagome lattices in zero and finite magnetic fields. Each model has a wide region in the microscopic parameter space, where the propagation vector is turned to a commensurate position equal to a half of the reciprocal lattice vector with a nontrivial star. Within these regions the zero-field ground states for both models correspond to noncoplanar triple-k spin configurations. A universal appearance of the 3-k states can be related to the spin-space dimensionality. A strong magnetic field freezes the longitudinal spin component reducing the spin-space dimensionality. Accordingly, we find transitions into the double-k magnetic structures induced by applied field for both spin models. The predicted transition between 3-k and 2-k states may explain the hitherto unexplained transitions observed experimentally in cubic spinels GeNi2O4 and GeCo2O4 under magnetic field.

We investigate ytterbium gallium garnet Yb$_{3}$Ga$_{5}$O$_{12}$ in the paramagnetic phase above the supposed magnetic transition at $T_λ \approx 54$ mK. Our study combines susceptibility and specific heat measurements with neutron scattering experiments and theoretical calculations. Below 500 mK, the elastic neutron response is strongly peaked in the momentum space. Along with that the inelastic spectrum develops flat excitation modes. In magnetic field, the lowest energy branch follows a Zeeman shift in accordance with the field-dependent specific heat data. An intermediate state with spin canting away from the field direction is evidenced in small magnetic fields. In the field of 2 T, the total magnetization almost saturates and the measured excitation spectrum is well reproduced by the spin-wave calculations taking into account solely the dipole-dipole interactions. The small positive Curie-Weiss temperature derived from the susceptibility measurements is also accounted for by the dipole spin model. Altogether, our results suggest that Yb$_{3}$Ga$_{5}$O$_{12}$ is a quantum dipolar magnet.

Novel effects induced by nonmagnetic impurities in frustrated magnets and quantum spin liquid represent a highly nontrivial and interesting problem. A theoretical proposal of extended modulated spin structures induced by do** of such magnets, distinct from the well-known skyrmions has attracted significant interest. Here, we demonstrate that nonmagnetic impurities can produce such extended spin structures in h-YMnO3, a triangular antiferromagnet with noncollinear magnetic order. Using inelastic neutron scattering (INS), we measured the full dynamical structure factor in Al-doped h-YMnO3 and confirmed the presence of magnon dam** with a clear momentum dependence. Our theoretical calculations can reproduce the key features of the INS data, supporting the formation of the proposed spin textures. As such, our study provides the first experimental confirmation of the impurity-induced spin textures. We argue that the state selection may have different outcomes for quantum and thermal order by disorder. As an example, we consider the semiclassical Heisenberg fcc antiferromagnet with only the nearest-neighbor interactions. Zero-point oscillations select the type 3 collinear antiferromagnetic state at T=0. Thermal fluctuations favor instead the type 1 antiferromagnetic structure. The opposite tendencies result in a finite-temperature transition between the two collinear states. Competition between effects of quantum and thermal order by disorder is a general phenomenon and is also realized in the J1-J2 square-lattice antiferromagnet at the critical point J2 = 0.5 J1.

FePS$_3$ is a van der Waals compound with a honeycomb lattice that is a good example of a two-dimensional antiferromagnet with Ising-like anisotropy. Neutron spectroscopy data from FePS3 were previously analysed using a straight-forward Heisenberg Hamiltonian with a single-ion anisotropy. The analysis captured most of the elements of the data, however some significant discrepancies remained. The discrepancies were most obvious at the Brillouin zone boundaries. The data are subsequently reanalysed allowing for unequal exchange between nominally equivalent nearest-neighbours, which resolves the discrepancies. The source of the unequal exchange is attributed to a biquadratic exchange term in the Hamiltonian which most probably arises from a strong magnetolattice coupling. The new parameters show that there are features consistent with Dirac magnon nodal lines along certain Brillouin zone boundaries.

This material consists of weakly coupled spin-1/2 chains of copper ions with frustrated ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions. The resonance frequencies and their field dependence are analyzed combining microscopic and macroscopic theoretical approaches and precise values of magnetic anisotropy constants are obtained. We conclude that possible realization of exotic multipolar quantum states in this material is greatly influenced by the biaxial anisotropy.

Multiple superconducting order parameters are extremely rare. Here we show that a very small pressure can induce this phenomenon in the recently discovered heavy fermion superconductor UTe2. This nearly ferromagnetic system shows several intriguing phenomena, including an extraordinary reinforcement of superconductivity in very strong magnetic fields. We find that pressure can tune the system to a more correlated state and probable magnetic order. The superconducting critical temperature is strongly enhanced, reaching almost 3K, a new record for Ce- and U-based heavy fermion superconductors. Most spectacularly under pressure we find a transition within the superconducting state, putting UTe2 among the very rare systems having multiple superconducting phases. UTe2 under pressure is a treasure trove of several of the most fascinating phenomena in unconventional superconductivity and may well be a keystone in their understanding.

We study the low temperature static and dynamical properties of the classical bond-disordered antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice. This model has recently been shown to host a new type of spin liquid exhibiting an exponentially large number of discrete ground states. Surprisingly, despite the rigidity of the groundstates, we establish the vanishing of the corresponding spin stiffness. Locally, the low-lying eigenvectors of the Hessian appear to exhibit a fractal inverse participation ratio. Its spin dynamics resembles that of Coulomb Heisenberg spin liquids, but exhibits a new low-temperature dynamically arrested regime, which however gets squeezed out with increasing system size. We also probe the properties of the energy landscape underpinning this behaviour, and find energy barriers between distinct ground states vanishing with system size. In turn the local minima appear highly connected and the system tends to lose memory of its inital state in an accumulation of soft directions.

The mineral linarite, PbCuSO$_4$(OH)$_2$, is a spin 1/2 chain with frustrating nearest neighbor ferromagnetic and next-nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic exchange interactions. Our inelastic neutron scattering experiments performed above the saturation field establish that the ratio between these exchanges is such that linarite is extremely close to the quantum critical point between spin-multipolar phases and the ferromagnetic state. However, the measured complex magnetic phase diagram depends strongly on the magnetic field direction. The field-dependent phase sequence is explained by our classical simulations of a nearly critical model with tiny orthorhombic exchange anisotropy. The simulations also capture qualitatively the measured variations of the wave vector as well as the staggered and the uniform magnetizations in an applied field.

We observe a disappearance of the 1/3 magnetization plateau and a striking change of the magnetic configuration under a moderate do** of the model triangular antiferromagnet RbFe(MoO4)2. The reason is an effective lifting of degeneracy of mean-field ground states by a random potential of impurities, which compensates, in the low temperature limit, the fluctuation contribution to free energy. These results provide a direct experimental confirmation of the fluctuation origin of the ground state in a real frustrated system. The change of the ground state to a least collinear configuration reveals an effective positive biquadratic exchange provided by the structural disorder. On heating, doped samples regain the structure of a pure compound thus allowing for an investigation of the remarkable competition between thermal and structural disorder.

We study a class of disordered continuous classical spin systems including the kagome Heisenberg magnet. While each term in its local Hamiltonian can be independently minimised, we find {\it discrete} degenerate ground states whose number grows exponentially with system size. These states do not exhibit zero-energy `excitations' characteristic of highly frustrated magnets but instead are local minima of the energy landscape, albeit with an anomalously soft excitation spectrum. This represents a spin liquid version of the phenomenon of jamming familiar from granular media and structural glasses. Correlations of this jammed spin liquid, which upon increasing the disorder strength gives way to a conventional spin glass, may be algebraic (Coulomb-type) or exponential.

We propose a superconducting spin-triplet valve, which consists of a superconductor and an itinerant magnetic material, with the magnet showing an intrinsic non-collinear order characterized by a wave vector that may be aligned in a few equivalent preferred directions under control of a weak external magnetic field. Re-orienting the spiral direction allows one to controllably modify long-range spin-triplet superconducting correlations, leading to spin-valve switching behavior. Our results indicate that the spin-valve effect may be noticeable. This bilayer may be used as a magnetic memory element for cryogenic nanoelectronics. It has the following advantages in comparison to superconducting spin valves proposed previously: (i) it contains only one magnetic layer, which may be more easily fabricated and controlled, (ii) its ground states are separated by a potential barrier, which solves the "half-select" problem of the addressed switch of memory elements.

We investigate field-induced transformations in the dynamical response of the $XXZ$ model on the triangular lattice that are associated with the anharmonic magnon coupling and decay phenomena. A set of concrete theoretical predictions is made for a close physical realization of the spin-1/2 $XXZ$ model, Ba$_3$CoSb$_2$O$_9$. We demonstrate that dramatic modifications in magnon spectrum must occur in low out-of-plane fields that are easily achievable for this material. The hallmark of the effect is a coexistence of the clearly distinct well-defined magnon excitations with significantly broadened ones in different regions of the ${\bf k}-ω$ space. The field-induced decays are generic for this class of models and become more prominent at larger anisotropies and in higher fields.

We extend these results to the whole family the $XY$ pyrochlore antiferromagnets and show that presence and number of low-field transitions for different orientations can be used for locating a given material in the parameter space of anisotropic pyrochlores. We systematically investigate the ground-state and the spectral properties of antiferromagnets on a kagomé lattice with several common types of the planar anisotropy: $XXZ$, single-ion, and out-of-plane Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya. Our main focus is on the role of nonlinear, anharmonic terms, which are responsible for the quantum order-by-disorder effect and for the corresponding selection of the ground-state spin structure in many of these models. The $XXZ$ and the single-ion anisotropy models exhibit a quantum phase transition between the ${\bf q}\!=\!0$ and the $\sqrt{3}\times\!\sqrt{3}$ states as a function of the anisotropy parameter, offering a rare example of the quantum order-by-disorder fluctuations favoring a ground state which is different from the one selected by thermal fluctuations. The nonlinear terms are also shown to be crucial for a very strong near-resonant decay phenomenon leading to the quasiparticle breakdown in the kagomé-lattice antiferromagnets whose spectra are featuring flat or weakly dispersive modes. The effect is shown to persist even in the limit of large spin values and should be common to other frustrated magnets with flat branches of excitations. Model calculations of the spectrum of the $S=5/2$ Fe-jarosite with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya anisotropy provide a convincing and detailed characterization of the proposed scenario.

We theoretically investigate the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a triangular lattice doped with nonmagnetic impurities. Two nontrivial effects resulting from collective impurity behavior are predicted. The first one is related to presence of uncompensated magnetic moments localized near vacancies as revealed by the low-temperature Curie tail in the magnetic susceptibility. These moments exhibit an anomalous growth with the impurity concentration, which we attribute to the clustering mechanism. In an external magnetic field, impurities lead to an even more peculiar phenomenon lifting the classical ground-state degeneracy in favor of the conical state. We analytically demonstrate that vacancies spontaneously generate a positive biquadratic exchange, which is responsible for the above degeneracy lifting.

We calculate magnon lifetime in an easy-plane ferromagnet on a tetragonal lattice in transverse magnetic field. At zero temperature magnons are unstable with respect to spontaneous decay into two other magnons. Varying ratio of intrachain to interchain exchanges in this model we consider the effect of dimensionality on spontaneous magnon decay. The strongest magnon dam** is found in the quasi-one-dimensional case for momenta near the Brillouin zone boundary. The sign of a weak interchain coupling has a little effect on the magnon decay rate. The obtained theoretical results suggest possibility of experimental observation of spontaneous magnon decay in a quasi-one-dimensional ferromagnet CsNiF$_3$. We also find an interesting enhancement of the magnon decay rate for a three-dimensional ferromagnet. The effect is present only for the nearest-neighbor model and is related to effective dimensionality reduction in the two-magnon continuum.

We study the finite-temperature transition in a model XY antiferromagnet on a pyrochlore lattice, which describes the pyrochlore material Er2Ti2O7. The ordered magnetic structure selected by thermal fluctuations is six-fold degenerate. Nevertheless, our classical Monte Carlo simulations show that the critical behavior corresponds to the three-dimensional XY universality class. We determine an additional critical exponent nu_6=0.75>nu characteristic of a dangerously irrelevant scaling variable. Persistent thermal fluctuations in the ordered phase are revealed in Monte Carlo simulations by the peculiar coexistence of Bragg peaks and diffuse magnetic scattering, the feature also observed in neutron diffraction experiments.

Spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$ and Cs$_2$CuBr$_4$ with distorted triangular-lattice structures are studied by means of electron spin resonance spectroscopy in magnetic fields up to the saturation field and above. In the magnetically saturated phase, quantum fluctuations are fully suppressed, and the spin dynamics is defined by ordinary magnons. This allows us to accurately describe the magnetic excitation spectra in both materials and, using the harmonic spin-wave theory, to determine their exchange parameters. The viability of the proposed method was proven by applying it to Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$, yielding $J/k_B=4.7(2)$ K, $J'/k_B=1.42(7)$ K [$J'/J\simeq 0.30$] and revealing good agreement with inelastic neutron-scattering results. For the isostructural Cs$_2$CuBr$_4$, we obtain $J/k_B=14.9(7)$ K, $J'/k_B=6.1(3)$ K, [$J'/J\simeq 0.41$], providing exact and conclusive information on the exchange couplings in this frustrated spin system.

We present analytical arguments confirmed by numerical calculations that at zero temperature vacancies stabilize a conical state providing an example of "order by quenched disorder" effect. Competition between thermal fluctuations and the site disorder leads to a complicated H-T phase diagram, which is deduced from the classical Monte Carlo simulations for a representative vacancy concentration. Noticeably, the transition into the long-range magnetically ordered phase does not significantly affect the size of the gap, suggesting that even below $T_N$ the high-energy spin dynamics in Cs$_2$CuBr$_4$ is determined by short-range-order spin correlations. The experimental data are compared with results of model spin-wave-theory calculations for spin-1/2 triangle-lattice antiferromagnet.

In low magnetic fields up to $h_{c1}/J_1\approx 2.9$ the $Z_3$ rotational lattice symmetry is spontaneously broken while a 1/2-magnetization plateau is stabilized around $h_{c2}/J_1=4$. The collinear plateau state and the coplanar state in higher fields break the $Z_4$ translational symmetry and correspond to triple-$q$ magnetic structures. The intermediate phase $h_{c1}<h<h_{c2}$ has an interesting symmetry structure, breaking simultaneously the $Z_3$ and $Z_4$ symmetries. At much lower temperatures the spatial broken discrete symmetries coexist with the quasi long-range order of the transverse spin components.

A theoretical overview of the phenomenon of spontaneous magnon decays in quantum antiferromagnets is presented. The intrinsic zero-temperature dam** of magnons in quantum spin systems is a fascinating many-body effect, which has recently attracted significant attention in view of its possible observation in neutron-scattering experiments. An introduction to the theory of magnon interactions and a discussion of necessary symmetry and kinematic conditions for spontaneous decays are provided. Various parallels with the decays of anharmonic phonons and excitations in superfluid 4He are extensively used. Three principal cases of spontaneous magnon decays are considered: field-induced decays in Heisenberg antiferromagnets, zero-field decays in spiral antiferromagnets, and triplon decays in quantum-disordered magnets. Analytical results are compared with available numerical data and prospective materials for experimental observation of the decay-related effects are briefly discussed.

Motivated by recent neutron scattering experiments, we derive and study an effective "pseudo-dipolar" spin-1/2 model for the XY pyrochlore antiferromagnet Er2Ti2O7. While a bond-dependent in-plane exchange anisotropy removes any continuous symmetry, it does lead to a one-parameter `accidental' classical degeneracy. This degeneracy is lifted by quantum fluctuations in favor of the non-coplanar spin structure observed experimentally -- a rare experimental instance of quantum order by disorder. A non-Goldstone low-energy mode is present in the excitation spectrum in accordance with inelastic neutron scattering data. Our theory also resolves the puzzle of the experimentally observed continuous ordering transition, absent from previous models.

We study high-field magnon dynamics and examine the dynamical structure factor in the quasi-2D tetragonal Heisenberg antiferromagnet with interlayer coupling corresponding to realistic materials. Within spin-wave theory, we show that a non-zero interlayer coupling mitigates singular corrections to the excitation spectrum occurring in the high-field regime that would otherwise require a self-consistent approach beyond the 1/S approximation. For the fields between the threshold for decays and saturation field we observe widening of the two-magnon sidebands with significant shifting of the spectral weight away from the quasiparticle peak. We find spectrum broadening throughout large regions of the Brillouin zone, dramatic redistributions of spectral weight to the two-magnon continuum, two-peak structures and other features clearly unlike conventional single-particle peaks.

BaMn2As2 is unique among BaT2As2 compounds crystallizing in the body-centered-tetragonal ThCr2Si2 structure, which contain stacked square lattices of 3d transition metal T atoms, since it has an insulating large-moment (3.9 muB/Mn) G-type (checkerboard) antiferromagnetic AF ground state. We report measurements of the anisotropic magnetic susceptibility chi versus temperature T from 300 to 1000 K of single crystals of BaMn2As2, and magnetic inelastic neutron scattering measurements at 8 K and 75As NMR measurements from 4 to 300 K of polycrystalline samples. The Neel temperature determined from the chi(T) measurements is TN = 618(3) K. The measurements are analyzed using the J1-J2-Jc Heisenberg model. Linear spin wave theory for G-type AF ordering and classical and quantum Monte Carlo simulations and molecular field theory calculations of chi(T) and of the magnetic heat capacity Cmag(T) are presented versus J1, J2 and Jc. We also obtain band theoretical estimates of the exchange couplings in BaMn2As2. From analyses of our chi(T), NMR, neutron scattering, and previously published heat capacity data for BaMn2As2 on the basis of the above theories for the J1-J2-Jc Heisenberg model and our band-theoretical results, our best estimates of the exchange constants in BaMn2As2 are J1 = 13 meV, J2/J1 = 0.3 and Jc/J1 = 0.1, which are all antiferromagnetic. From our classical Monte Carlo simulations of the G-type AF ordering transition, these exchange parameters predict TN = 640 K for spin S = 5/2, in close agreement with experiment. Using spin wave theory, we also utilize these exchange constants to estimate the suppression of the ordered moment due to quantum fluctuations for comparison with the observed value and again obtain S = 5/2 for the Mn spin.

In zero field the dam** is determined by three-magnon decay processes, whereas decays in the two-particle channel dominate in a transverse magnetic field. Explicit calculations of the magnon dam** are performed in the framework of the spin-wave theory for the $XXZ$ square-lattice ferromagnet with an anisotropy parameter $λ<1$. In zero magnetic field the decays occur for $λ^*<λ<1$ with $λ^*\approx 1/7$. We also discuss possibility of experimental observation of the predicted effect in a number of ferromagnetic insulators.

We investigate the effect of geometrical frustration on the $H$--$T$ phase diagrams of the classical Heisenberg antiferromagnets on triangular and kagome lattices. The phase diagrams for the two models are obtained from large scale Monte Carlo simulations. For the kagome antiferromagnet thermal fluctuations are unable to lift completely degeneracy and stabilize translationally disordered multipolar phases. We find a substantial difference in the temperature scales of the order by disorder effect related to different degeneracy of the low- and the high-field classical ground states in the kagome antiferromagnet. In the low-field regime, the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition into a spin-nematic phase is produced by unbinding of half-quantum vortices.

Temperature and magnetic field studies of the elastic constants of the chromium spinel CdCr_2O_4 show pronounced anomalies related to strong spin-phonon coupling in this frustrated antiferromagnet. A detailed comparison of the longitudinal acoustic mode propagating along the [111] direction with theory based on an exchange-striction mechanism leads to an estimate of the strength of the magneto-elastic interaction. The derived spin-phonon coupling constant is in good agreement with previous determinations based on infrared absorption. Further insight is gained from intermediate and high magnetic field experiments in the field regime of the magnetization plateau. The role of the antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction discussed and we compare the spin-phonon coupling in CdCr_2O_4 in both the ordered and disordered states.

Dynamical properties of the square-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet in applied magnetic field are studied for arbitrary value S of the spin. Above the threshold field for two-particle decays, the standard spin-wave theory yields singular corrections to the excitation spectrum with logarithmic divergences for certain momenta. We develop a self-consistent approximation applicable for S >= 1, which avoids such singularities and provides regularized magnon decay rates. Results for the dynamical structure factor obtained in this approach are presented for S = 1 and S = 5/2.

Competing ferro- and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions may lead to the formation of bound magnon pairs in the high-field phase of a frustrated quantum magnet. With decreasing field, magnon pairs undergo a Bose-condensation prior to the onset of a conventional one-magnon instability. We develop an analytical approach to study the zero-temperature properties of the magnon-pair condensate, which is a bosonic analog of the BCS superconductors. Representation of the condensate wave-function in terms of the coherent bosonic states reveals the spin-nematic symmetry of the ground-state and allows one to calculate various static properties. Sharp quasiparticle excitations are found in the nematic state with a small finite gap. We also predict the existence of a long-range ordered spin-nematic phase in the frustrated chain material LiCuVO4 at high fields.
