We report a detailed study of the magnetic properties of KBaGd(BO$_3$)$_2$, in which magnetic Gd$^{3+}$ ($S=7/2$) ions form into two-dimensional triangular layers. Magnetization, specific heat and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) measurements have been performed on KBaGd(BO$_3$)$_2$ single crystals. The results show that a long-range antiferromagnetic state is established below $T_{\rm N}=0.24$ K. In zero fields, only about half of the full entropy is released at $T_{\rm N}$, indicating that not all the magnetic moments are frozen below the ordering temperature, as expected from the geometrical frustration of the triangular spin lattice. Further studies under external fields were performed down to 50 mK, and the magnetic phase diagrams are established with magnetic fields applied both within and perpendicular to the triangular plane. KBaGd(BO$_3$)$_2$ serves as an example of a two-dimensional triangular lattice with large spin values ($S=7/2$) and can be directly compared with the iso-structure KBaR(BO$_3$)$_2$ (R = Dy-Yb) family of doublet ground states, which exhibit effective spins of $S=1/2$.

Spin-charge conversion via inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) is essential for enabling various applications of spintronics. The spin Hall response usually follows a universal scaling relation with longitudinal electric resistivity and has mild temperature dependence because elementary excitations play only a minor role in resistivity and hence ISHE. Here we report that the ISHE of metallic glasses shows nearly two orders of magnitude enhancements with temperature increase from a threshold of 80-100 K to glass transition points. As electric resistivity changes only marginally in the temperature range, the anomalous temperature dependence is in defiance of the prevailing scaling law. Such a giant temperature enhancement can be well described by a two-level thermal excitation model of glasses and disappears after crystallization, suggesting a new mechanism which involves unique thermal excitations of glasses. This finding may pave new ways to achieve high spin-charge conversion efficiency at room and higher temperatures for spintronic devices and to detect structure and dynamics of glasses using spin currents.

We study metal-insulator transitions between Mott insulators and metals. The transition mechanism completely different from the original dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) emerges from a cluster extension of it. A consistent picture suggests that the quasiparticle weight $Z$ remains nonzero through metals and suddenly jumps to zero at the transition, while the gap opens continuously in the insulators. This is in contrast with the original DMFT, where $Z$ continuously vanishes but the gap opens discontinuously. The present results arising from electron differentiation in momentum space agree with recent puzzling bulk-sensitive experiments on CaVO$_3$ and SrVO$_3$.

By using thermal and Lorentz force, the vortex motion is successfully manipulated in the mixed state of underdoped La$_{2 - x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ single crystals and optimally doped YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7 - δ}$ thin films. A conclusion is drawn that the strong Nernst signal above $T_{c}$ is induced by vortex motion. In the normal state, in order to reduce the dissipative contribution from the quasiparticle scattering and enhance the signal due to the possible vortex motion, a new measurement configuration is proposed. It is found that the in-plane Nernst signal ($H$ $| | $ $c$) can be measurable up to a high temperature in the pseudogap region, while the Abrikosov flux flow dissipation can only be measured up to $T_{c}$. This may point to different vortices below and above $T_{c}$ if we attribute the strong Nernst signal in the pseudogap region to the vortex motion. Below $T_{c}$ the dissipation is induced by the motion of the Abrikosov vortices. Above $T_{c}$ the dissipation may be caused by the motion of the spontaneously generated unbinded vortex-antivortex pairs.

The authors analyzed activation energies of HgBa$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{8+δ}$ thin films with a scaling relation, and defined four vortex regions for thin films. We find that the definitions of four vortex regions and the scaling relation are questionable when studying their definition of the resistivity range for thermally activated flux flow. Using the empirical activation energy form suggested by Zhang \textit{et al.} [Phys. Rev. B \textbf{71}, 052502 (2005)] for lower resistivity data, we find that the form is not only in good agreement with the resistivity $ρ(T,H)$, but also with the apparent activation energy $-\partial \ln ρ(T,H)/\partial T^{-1}$.

We develop a microscopic theory for the charge ordering (CO) transitions in the spinels AlV$_2$O$_4$ and LiV$_2$O$_4$ (under pressure). The high degeneracy of CO states is lifted by a coupling to the rhombohedral lattice deformations which favors transition to a CO state with inequivalent V(1) and V(2) sites forming Kagomé and trigonal planes respectively. We construct an extended Hubbard type model including a deformation potential which is treated in unrestricted Hartree Fock approximation and describes correctly the observed first-order CO transition. We also discuss the influence of associated orbital order. Furthermore we suggest that due to different band fillings AlV$_2$O$_4$ should remain metallic while LiV$_2$O$_4$ under pressure should become a semiconductor when charge disproportionation sets in.

We study the electronic structure and correlations in the geometrically frustrated two dimensional checkerboard lattice. In the large U limit considered here we start from an extended Hubbard model of spinless fermions at half-filling. We investigate the model within two distinct Green's function approaches: In the first approach a single-site representation decoupling scheme is used that includes the effect of nearest neighbor charge fluctuations. In the second approach a cluster representation leading to a 'multiorbital' model is investigated which includes intra-cluster correlations exactly and those between clusters on a mean field basis. It is demonstrated that with increasing nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction V both approaches lead to a metal-insulator transition with an associated 'Mott-Hubbard' like gap caused by V. Within the single site approach we also explore the possibility of charge order. Furthermore we investigate the evolution of the quasiparticle bands as funtion of V.

Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$($x\approx$0.5) thin films have been grown on SrTiO$_3$ and YSZ substrates by the pulsed laser ablation. The substrate temperature dependence of orientation and superconducting poperties were systematically studied. Good quality \textit{c} and {a}-axis orientated films can be obtained on SrTiO$_3$ via changing the substrate temperature solely. On YSZ, films with good \textit{c}-axis orientation can be grown, while it is hard to grow films with good \emph{a}-axis orientation by changing substrate temperature alone. The highest $T_{C0}$ is about 37K, which is found in the films grown on YSZ with a good \emph{c}-axis orientation. For the films grown on STO, however, the highest $T_{C0}$ is about 35.6K with a mixed orientation of \emph{c}-axis and \emph{a}-axis. In most of the superconducting films, the weak temperature dependence of the normal state resistivity, as characterized by small $R(290K)/R(50K)\leq2$ ratios, together with a weak localization behavior just above $T_C$ could be attributed to the essential scattering due to the localized electronic states. The superconducting transitions in a field up to 10 T along \textit{c}-axis have been measured on a \textit{c}-axis oriented film grown on SrTiO$_3$. The zero-temperature in-plane upper critical field $B^{ab}_{C2}$(0) is estimated from the resistivity transition data.

Density matrix renormalization group methods are used to investigate the quantum phase diagram of a one-dimensional half-filled ionic Hubbard model with bond-charge attraction, which can be mapped from the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger-type electron-phonon coupling at the antiadiabatic limit. A bond order wave (dimerized) phase which separates the band insulator from the Mott insulator always exists as long as electron-phonon coupling is present. This is qualitatively different from that at the adiabatic limit. Our results indicate that electron-electron interaction, ionic potential and quantum phonon fluctuations combine in the formation of the bond-order wave phase.

It is confirmed that the spin gap will be closed at U>8W. But the long-range bond order wave survives even when the spin gap is closed. It indicates that the ground state is a novel dimerized spin fluid at U>8W. By a charge-spin transformation, it is shown that there should be a dimerized metallic phase at U<-8W. Furthermore, it is found that the Hubbard interaction U enhances initially the dimerization for a weak bond charge attraction W whereas it reduces monotonously the dimerization for a stronger bond charge attraction W.
