We report an Fe $K$-edge resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) study of K$_{0.83}$Fe$_{1.53}$Se$_2$. This material is an insulator, unlike many parent compounds of iron-based superconductors. We found a sharp excitation around 1 eV, which is resonantly enhanced when the incident photon energy is tuned near the pre-edge region of the absorption spectrum. The spectral weight and line shape of this excitation exhibit clear momentum dependence. In addition, we observe momentum-independent broad interband transitions at higher excitation energy of 3-7 eV. Calculations based on a 70 band $dp$ orbital model, using a moderate $U_{\rm eff}\approx 2.5$ eV, indicate that the $\sim$1 eV feature originates from the correlated Fe 3$d$ electrons, with a dominant $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbital character. We find that a moderate $U_{\rm eff}$ yields a satisfying agreement with the experimental spectra, suggesting that the electron correlations in the insulating and metallic iron based superconductors are comparable.

The occurrences of collective quantum states, such as superconductivity (SC) and charge- or spin-densitywaves (CDWs or SDWs), are among the most fascinating phenomena in solids. To date much effort has been made to explore the interplay between different orders, yet little is known about the relationship of multiple orders of the same type. Here we report optical spectroscopy study on CDWs in the rare-earth tri-telluride compounds RTe3 (R = rare earth elements). Besides the prior reported two CDW orders, the study reveals unexpectedly the presence of a third CDW order in the series which evolves systematically with the size of R element. With increased chemical pressure, the first and third CDW orders are both substantially suppressed and compete with the second one by depleting the low energy spectral weight. A complete phase diagram for the multiple CDW orders in this series is established.

Combining superconductor and semiconductors in nanostructure junctions was a challenging technological problem that attracted attention for long time [van Wees]. The radiative recombination of Cooper pairs was demonstrated, using a Nb/n-InGaAs/p-InP heterostructure [EL_Hayashi, PL_Hayashi], called Cooper pair LED [PL_Suemune, R_Suemune]. It has been suggested that the junction could produce entangled photon pairs [Benson, Gywat] needed for quantum information processing and communication. Here we demonstrate an enhanced radiative recombination of electron Copper pairs in inhomogeneous K$_{0.75}$Fe$_{1.75}$Se$_{2}$ (KFS) subjected to laser light upon cooling below superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ 28 K. The observation of this phenomena is possible due to fulfillment of the following three conditions: (1) Phase separation in superconducting KFS crystals is realized via naturally occurring heterostructure [mic_Charnukha, TEM_Wang]; (2) Partial Fe-vacancy ordered $n$-type semiconducting regions, sandwiched between Fe-vacancy free SC and vacancy-ordering AFM structure, forming active layers. The electronic structure of those active layer is tuned to induce Cooper pairs by the proximity effect [de Gennes] and/or to accept Cooper pair tunneling from the SC phase. In the active layer, the electron Cooper pair can radiatively recombine with two p-type holes [Asano] produced by laser photoexcitation; (3) In KFS nature provides at least 10$^{9}$ SC/$n$-type semiconducting/AFM insulating junctions per cm$^{3}$. For laser excitation energy of 1.92 eV ($λ$=647.1 nm) and power 0.68 mW focused to the spot of 40x80 $μ$m$^{2}$ the estimated internal quantum efficiency of the natural heterostructure at 10 K in the luminescence range of 700 to 1300 nm is close to 100% and is likely limited by availability of the $p$-type holes.

We perform in-plane optical spectroscopy measurement on (00l) FeSe thin-film grown on SrTiO$_3$ substrate by pulsed laser deposition method. The study indicates that the low frequency conductivity consists of two Drude components, a broad one which takes up most of the spectral weight and a very narrow one roughly below 100-150 \cm. The narrow Drude component locates at so low frequencies that no such behavior was observed in iron pnictides. The overall plasma frequency is found to be smaller than the FeAs based compounds, suggesting a stronger correlation effect. Similar to iron pnictides, a temperature-induced spectral weight transfer is observed for FeSe. However, the relevant energy scale is lower. Additionally, different from a recent ARPES measurement which revealed a spin density wave (SDW) order at low temperature for FeSe thin films grown on SrTiO$_3$ substrate, no signature of the band structure reconstruction arising from the formation of the SDW order is seen by optical measurement in the thick FeSe films.

We present the specific heat, magnetization, optical spectroscopy measurements and the firstprinciple calculations on the Weberite structure Ca2Os2O7 single crystal/polycrystalline sample. The Ca2Os2O7 shows a Curie-Weiss nature at high temperature and goes into a ferrimagnetic insulating state at 327 K on cooling. A λ-like peak is observed at 327 K in the specific heat implying a second-order phase transition. The vanishing electronic specific heat at low temperature suggests a full energy gap. At high temperature above the transition, small amount of itinerant carriers with short life time τare observed, which is gapped at 20 K with a direct gap of 0:24 eV . Our first principle calculations indicate that the anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) correlation with intermediate Coulomb repulsion U could effectively split Os(4b) t2g bands and push them away from Fermi level(EF). On the other hand, a non-collinear magnetic interaction is needed to push the Os(4c) bands away from EF, which could be induced by Os(4c)-Os(4c) frustration. Therefore, AFM correlation, Coulomb repulsion U and non-collinear interaction all play important roles for the insulating ground state in Ca2Os2O7.

Electronic transport measurement reveals that the coupling between conducting carriers and magnetic order in CaCo$_{2}$As$_{2}$ is much weaker comparing to the parent compounds of iron pnictide. Applying magnetic field along \emph{c} axis induces two successive spin-flop transitions in its magnetic state. The magnetization saturation behaviors with \emph{\textbf{H}$\parallel$c} and \emph{\textbf{H}$\parallel$ab} at 10K indicate that the antiferromagnetic coupling along \emph{c} direction is very weak. A pronounced Drude component, which exists at all measurement temperatures, demonstrates the partial gap character of both CDW orders. About half of the unmodulated Fermi surface (FS) remains in the CDW state at the lowest measurement temperature. The study also reveals that fluctuation effect is still prominent in this two-dimensional (2D) material.

We report optical spectroscopic measurements on electron- and hole-doped BaFe2As2. We show that the compounds in the normal state are not simple metals. The optical conductivity spectra contain, in addition to the free carrier response at low frequency, a temperature-dependent gap-like suppression at rather high energy scale near 0.6 eV. This suppression evolves with the As-Fe-As bond angle induced by electron- or hole-do**. Furthermore, the feature becomes much weaker in the Fe-chalcogenide compounds. We elaborate that the feature is caused by the strong Hund's rule coupling effect between the itinerant electrons and localized electron moment arising from the multiple Fe 3d orbitals. Our experiments demonstrate the coexistence of itinerant and localized electrons in iron-based compounds, which would then lead to a more comprehensive picture about the metallic magnetism in the materials.

We report an in-plane optical spectroscopy study on the iron-selenide superconductor K$_{0.75}$Fe$_{1.75}$Se$_2$. The measurement revealed the development of a sharp reflectance edge below T$_c$ at frequency much smaller than the superconducting energy gap on a relatively incoherent electronic background, a phenomenon which was not seen in any other Fe-based superconductors so far investigated. Furthermore, the feature could be noticeably suppressed and shifted to lower frequency by a moderate magnetic field. Our analysis indicates that this edge structure arises from the development of a Josephson-coupling plasmon in the superconducting condensate. Together with the transmission electron microscopy analysis, our study yields compelling evidence for the presence of nanoscale phase separation between superconductivity and magnetism. The results also enable us to understand various seemingly controversial experimental data probed from different techniques.

Our measurement revealed two peculiar spectral structures: a double peak structure between 4000-6000 cm$^{-1}$ and abundant phonon modes much more than those expected for a 122 structure. We elaborate that those features could be naturally explained from the blocked antiferromagnetism due to the presence of Fe vacancy ordering as determined by recent neutron diffraction experiments. The double peaks reflect the coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic couplings between the neighboring Fe sites.

The optical spectra are found to display very strong temperature dependence. Besides a large and pronounced CDW energy gap being present already at room temperature as observed in earlier studies, the present measurement revealed the formation of another energy gap at smaller energy scale at low temperature. The second CDW gap removes the electrons near E$_F$ which undergo stronger scattering. The study yields evidence for the presence of multiple CDW orders or strong fluctuations in the light rare-earth element tri-telluride.

We show that the spectral features corresponding to the partial energy gaps in the spin-density-wave (SDW) state are present below the structural phase transition. This indicates that the electronic state below the structural phase transition is already very close to that in the SDW state. We also show that in-plane infrared phonon modes display systematic shifts towards high frequency upon rare-earth element substitutions for La, suggesting a strong enhancement of the bonding strength. Furthermore, an asymmetric line-shape of the in-plane phonon mode is observed, implying the presence of an electron-phonon coupling effect in Fe-pnictides.

A sizable electronic correlation effect was indicated from the analysis of the free-carrier spectral weight. With decreasing temperature from 300 K, we observed a continuous suppression of the spectral weight near 0.6 eV. But a spin-density-wave gap formation at lower energy scale was seen only in the broken-symmetry state. We elaborate that both the itinerancy and local spin interactions of Fe\emph{3d} electrons are present for the FeAs-based systems; however, the establishment of the long-range magnetic order at low temperature has a dominantly itinerant origin.
