We have carried out a detailed study to investigate the existence of an insulating parent phase for FeSe superconductor. The insulating Fe4Se5 with specific Fe-vacancy order shows a 3D-Mott variable range hop** behavior with a Verwey-like electronic correlation at around 45 K. The application of the RTA process at 450 celcius degree results in the destruction of Fe-vacancy order and induces more electron carriers by increasing the Fe3+ valence state. Superconductivity emerges with Tc ~ 8K without changing the chemical stoichiometry of the sample after the RTA process by resulting in the addition of extra carriers in favor of superconductivity.

We studied the electrical transport on $β$-Fe$_{4+δ}$Se$_{5}$ single-crystal nanowires, exhibiting $\sqrt{5}\times\sqrt{5}$ Fe-vacancy order and mixed valence of Fe. We observed a first-order metal-insulator transition of the transition temperature at $\sim$28~K at zero magnetic field. The dielectric relaxation reveals that the transition is related to an energy gap expansion of $\sim$12~meV, involving the charge-orbital ordering. At nearly 28~K, colossal positive magnetoresistance emerges, resulting from the magnetic-field dependent shift of the transition temperature. Through the transition, the magnetotransport behavior transits from two-dimension-like to one-dimension-like conduction. The transition temperature demonstrates anisotropy with the $c$-axis as the preferred orientation in magnetic fields, suggesting the spin-orbital coupling. Our findings demonstrate the novel magnetoresistive transition intimating a topological transition in the Fe-vacancy-ordered $β$-Fe$_{4+δ}$Se$_{5}$ nanowires. The results provide valuable information to better understand the orbital nature and the emergence of superconductivity in FeSe-based materials.

We report high pressure structural phase transformation sequence in a layered Iron-based superconducting compound FeSe0.3Te0.7 to 31 GPa at room temperature. The ambient pressure PbO type tetragonal phase (Space Group - P4/nmm) transforms to a monoclinic phase (Space group - P21/m) at a pressure of 7.3 \pm 0.9 GPa. This monoclinic phase is similar to the one observed below 100 K at ambient pressure. On further increase of pressure above 12 GPa, a transformation to an amorphous phase is observed that is completed by 20 GPa. The amorphous phase is found to be stable to the highest pressure of 31 GPa. This structural sequence of tetragonal \to monoclinic \to amorphous phase transformation appears to be a common feature of iron-based layered superconductors under compression. The pressure induced structural phase transformations are likely to play a key role in the superconductivity in these materials at high pressures.

LiCu2O2 is the first multiferroic cuprate to be reported and its ferroelectricity is induced by complex magnetic ordering in ground state, which is still in controversy today. Herein, we have grown nearly untwinned LiCu2O2 single crystals of high quality and systematically investigated their dielectric and ferroelectric behaviours in external magnetic fields. The highly anisotropic response observed in different magnetic fields apparently contradicts the prevalent bc- or ab- plane cycloidal spin model. Our observations give strong evidence supporting a new helimagnetic picture in which the normal of the spin helix plane is along the diagonal of CuO4 squares which form the quasi-1D spin chains by edge-sharing. Further analysis suggests that the spin helix in the ground state is elliptical and in the intermediate state the present c-axis collinear SDW model is applicable with some appropriate modifications. In addition, our studies show that the dielectric and ferroelectric measurements could be used as probes for the characterization of the complex spin structures in multiferroic materials due to the close tie between their magnetic and electric orderings.

We report the magnetic, dielectric and ferroelectric properties of polycrystalline iron vanadate(FeVO4), which has been recently found to exhibit multiferroicity in low temperature with noncollinear magnetic orderings. The influence of external magnetic field up to 9T on these properties is systematically investigated. Besides the suppressing effect on the original ferroelectric transition, the strong magnetic field seems to induce a secondary ferroelectric transition at a slight lower temperature. And the corresponding magnetization measurement reveals a field-induced metamagnetic transition at low temperatures. Our results will help to clarify the complex magnetic structure and microscopic mechanism of multiferroicity in FeVO4.

The ability to visually observe the locally heated melt, and ease of use and control of the image furnace make this method a promising and time-efficient way for obtaining high-quality FeSe1-xTex crystals. Our results indicate that with adequate heat treatment, the non-uniform distribution of Se and Te atoms in crystal lattice can be effectively eliminated, while the transition width of superconductivity can be reduced to about 2 K, which suggest the crystals are homogeneous in nature.

In the case of germanium, a small increase of the absorption occurs at intermediate THz pulse energies. The recovery of the free carrier absorption was monitored by time-resolved THz-pump/THz-probe measurements. At short probe delay times, the frequency response of germanium cannot be fitted by the Drude model. We attribute these unique phenomena of Ge to dynamical overpopulation of the high mobility gamma conduction band valley.

The onset of a well defined absorption peak at 1.2 THz is an indication of changes in LO and LA phonon populations due to cooling of the hot electrons.

Fe$_{1.068}$Te exhibits a first order phase transition near 67 K with a tetragonal to monoclinic structural transition and simultaneously develops a collinear antiferromagnetic (AF) order responsible for the entropy change across the transition. Systematic studies of FeSe$%_{1-x}$Te$_x$ system reveal that the AF structure and lattice distortion in these materials are different from those of FeAs-based pnictides. These results call into question the conclusions of present density functional calculations, where FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_x$ and FeAs-based pnictides are expected to have similar Fermi surfaces and therefore the same spin-density-wave AF order.

The pressure-enhanced Tc of FeSe0.5Te0.5 is more than 10 times larger than that of FeSe. Interestingly, FeTe is no longer superconducting. A low temperature structural distortion changes FeTe from triclinic symmetry to orthorhombic symmetry. We believe that this structural change breaks the magnetic symmetry and suppresses superconductivity in FeTe.

The recent discovery of superconductivity with relatively high transition temperature Tc in the layered iron-based quaternary oxypnictides La[ O1-xFx] FeAs was a real surprise. The excitement generated can be seen by the number of subsequent works published within a very short period of time. Although there exists superconductivity in alloy that contains Fe element, LaOMPn (with M= Fe, Ni; and Pn=P and As) is the first system where Fe-element plays the key role to the occurrence of superconductivity. LaOMPn has a layered crystal structure with an Fe-based plane. It is quite natural to ask whether there exists other Fe based planar compounds that exhibit superconductivity. Here we report the observation of superconductivity with zero resistance transition temperature at 8K in the PbO-type alpha-FeSe compound. Although FeSe has been studied quite extensively, a key observation is that the clean superconducting phase exists only in those samples prepared with intentional Se deficiency. What is truly striking, is that this compound has the same, perhaps simpler, planar crystal sublattice as the layered oxypnictides. Furthermore, FeSe is, compared with LaOFeAs, much easier to handle and fabricate. In view of the abundance of compounds with PbO type structure, this result opens a new route to the search for unconventional superconductors.
