Wide bandgap (WBG) semiconductors (Eg >2.0 eV) are integral to the advancement of next generation electronics, optoelectronics, and power industries, owing to their capability for high temperature operation, high breakdown voltage and efficient light emission. Enhanced power efficiency and functional performance can be attained through miniaturization, specifically via the integration of device fabrication into two-dimensional (2D) structure enabled by WBG 2D semiconductors. However, as an essential subgroup of WBG semiconductors, 2D transition metal oxides (TMOs) remain largely underexplored in terms of physical properties and applications in 2D opto-electronic devices, primarily due to the scarcity of sufficiently large 2D crystals. Thus, our goal is to develop synthesis pathways for 2D TMOs possessing large crystal domain (e.g. >10 nm), expanding the 2D TMOs family and providing insights for future engineering of 2D TMOs. Here, we demonstrate the synthesis of WBG 2D nickel oxide (NiO) (Eg > 2.7 eV) thermally converted from 2D nickel hydroxide (Ni(OH)2) with the lateral domain size larger than 10 um. Moreover, the conversion process is investigated using various microscopic techniques such as atomic force microscopy (AFM), Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), providing significant insights on the morphology and structure variation under different oxidative conditions. The electronic structure of the converted NixOy is further investigated using multiple soft X-ray spectroscopies, such as X-ray absorption (XAS) and emission spectroscopies (XES).

Laser metal additive manufacturing technology is capable of producing components with complex geometries and compositions that cannot be realized by conventional manufacturing methods. However, a large number of pores generated during the additive manufacturing process greatly affect the mechanical properties of the additively manufactured parts, and the mechanism of such pore generation has not been revealed by direct observation clearly. Here, we report the mechanism of pore generation in the laser direct energy deposition process as revealed by {\it in-situ} high-speed high-resolution synchrotron X-ray imaging. We found that dissolution and re-precipitation of external gases and precipitation of metal vapors are the two main mechanisms of pore formation. We further explored the effects of different process parameters on the generation of pores and optimized the process to suppress pore generation. This work provides important insights into the formation of porosity defects during laser metal additive manufacturing, and can provide guidance for related process optimization.

Floquet (periodically driven) systems can give rise to unique non-equilibrium phases of matter without equilibrium analogs. The most prominent example is the realization of discrete time crystals. An intriguing question emerges: what other novel phases can manifest when the constraint of time periodicity is relaxed? In this study, we explore quantum systems subjected to a quasi-periodic drive. Leveraging a strongly interacting spin ensemble in diamond, we identify the emergence of long-lived discrete time quasi-crystals. Unlike conventional time crystals, time quasi-crystals exhibit robust sub-harmonic responses at multiple incommensurate frequencies. Furthermore, we show that the multi-frequency nature of the quasi-periodic drive allows for the formation of diverse patterns associated with different discrete time quasi-crystalline phases. Our findings demonstrate the existence of non-equilibrium phases in quasi-Floquet settings, significantly broadening the catalog of novel phenomena in driven many-body quantum systems.

The microscopic arrangement of atoms and molecules is the determining factor in how materials behave and perform. Beyond the long-range periodicity, the local disorder with local structures deviating from the average lattice structure plays a vital role in determining the physical properties of the phonon, electron and spin subsystems in crystalline functional materials. Experimentally characterizing the 3D atomic configuration of such local disorder and correlating it with the advanced functions remain a big challenge. Time-domain evolution of the local disorder, either static or dynamical, is lost due to the characterization at equilibrium state with conventional probing techniques. With the combination of femtosecond electron diffraction, structure factor calculation and TDDFT-MD simulation, we exclusively identify the static local disorder and the local anharmonicity of it in thermoelectric SnSe. The ultrafast structural dynamics in time domain reveal a dominant static off-symmetry displacement of Sn (~0.4 angstrom) and the anharmonicity of this local disorder induces an ultrafast atomic displacement within 100 fs after photoexcitation. The microscopic picture of the local anharmonicity indicates a direct and first signature of the THz Einstein oscillators in real space. Therefore, a glass-like thermal transport channel with the local disorder, the Einstein oscillators and the local anharmonicity, updates the fundamental insight into the long-debated ultralow thermal conductivity in SnSe. The local disorder over one to a few unit cells is pervasive and indispensable in thermoelectric materials, multiferroic materials and correlated electronic materials. Our method of revealing the 3D local disorder and the local correlated interactions by ultrafast structural dynamics will inspire broad interest in construction of the structure-property relationship in material science.

Bismuth vanadate - bismuth molybdate solid-solution was prepared to elaborate ceramics with different amounts of cation vacancies. Dense ceramics with similar microstructures were obtained and the evolution of their melting point, specific heat, thermal diffusivity, and conductivity as a function of the amount of vacancy was evaluated. At room temperature, the thermal conductivity decreases from 1.74 W m$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$ for BiVO$_{4}$ (x=0) to 1.12 W m$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$ for Bi$_{0.867}$$\square$$_{0.133}$Mo$_{0.4}$V$_{0.6}$O$_{4}$ (x=0.4). Moreover, we show that a very small amount of vacancy (1.7%, x=0.05) is enough to provide a large decrease in thermal conductivity by more than 15%, in agreement with a mass fluctuation scattering model. However, the temperature of the melting point also decreases with increasing amount of vacancy. Our results suggest adding only a very small amount of vacancy as the best strategy to obtain superior materials for thermal barriers and thermoelectric devices, with ultra-low thermal conductivity and high-temperature stability.

We present a quantum transport theory for hybrid superconducting systems based on our exact master equation approach. The total transient transport current is decomposed into components that describe coherent transports through different paths of particle and hole channels. We show that the coherent transports are resultant interferences of numerous repeated tunneling processes and cannot be rendered as a simple normal transmission or Andreev reflection as usually described quantum transport involving superconductivity. As a practical application, we find that the coherent transport currents passing through a pair of well-separated Majorana zero modes vanish due to the totally destructive interference between the particle and hole channels.

The strange-metal state is a crucial problem in condensed matter physics highlighted by its ubiquity in almost all major correlated systems[1-7]. Its understanding could provide important insight into high-Tc superconductivity[2] and quantum criticality[8]. However, with the Fermi liquid theory failing in strange metals, understanding the highly unconventional behaviors has been a long-standing challenge. Fundamental aspects of strange metals remain elusive, including the nature of their charge carriers[1]. Here, we report the observation of a giant Nernst response in the strange-metal state in a two-dimensional superconductor 2M-WS2. A giant Nernst coefficient comparable to the vortex Nernst signal in superconducting cuprates, and its high sensitivity to carrier mobility, are found when the system enters the strange-metal state from the Fermi liquid state. The temperature and magnetic field dependence of the giant Nernst peak rule out the relevance of both Landau quasiparticles and superconductivity. Instead, the giant Nernst peak at the crossover indicates a dramatic change in carrier entropy when entering the strange-metal state. The presence of such an anomalous Nernst response is further confirmed in other iconic strange metals, suggesting its universality and places stringent experimental constraints on the mechanism of strange metals.

The recent discovery of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates generates tremendous research endeavors, but the ground state of their parent compounds is still under debate. Here, we report experimental evidences for the dominant role of Kondo scattering in the underdoped Nd1-xSrxNiO2 thin films. A resistivity minimum associated with logarithmic temperature dependence in both longitudinal and Hall resistivities are observed in the underdoped Nd1-xSrxNiO2 samples before the superconducting transition. A linear scaling behavior $σ_{xy}^{AHE}\simσ_{xx}$ between anomalous Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}^{AHE}$ and conductivity $σ_{xx}$ is revealed, verifying the dominant Kondo scattering at low temperature. The effect of weak (anti-)localization is found to be secondary. Our experiments can help clarifying the basic physics in the underdoped Nd1-xSrxNiO2 infinite-layer thin films.

We propose to use quantum computers to simulate infection spreading in networks. We first show the analogy between the infection distribution and spin-lattice configurations with Ising-type interactions. Then, since the spreading process can be modeled as a classical Markovian process, we show that the spreading process can be simulated using the evolution of a quantum thermal dynamic model with a parameterized Hamiltonian. In particular, we analytically and numerically analyze the evolution behavior of the Hamiltonian, and prove that the evolution simulates a classical Markovian process, which describes the well-known epidemiological stochastic susceptible and infectious (SI) model. A practical method to determine the parameters of the thermal dynamic Hamiltonian from epidemiological inputs is exhibited. As an example, we simulate the infection spreading process of the SARS-Cov-2 variant Omicron in a small-world network.

In this paper, we investigate the non-Markovian quantum transport dynamics of a two-terminal Majorana device that is made of an asymmetric topological superconducting chain coupled to two leads. This asymmetric superconducting chain is analytically solvable and can be realized by a hybrid system of semiconductor nanowire coupled to superconductors or by 1D transverse-field Ising chains. In such asymmetric superconducting chains, by the change of chemical potential, its ground state undergoes a topological quantum phase transition from the topological Majorana bound state to the trivial Andreev bound state while the ground state energy remains zero. We solve the exact transient transport current and the corresponding differential conductance. The results show that the presence or absence of the interference between the left and right Majorana zero modes plays an important role on the topological phase transition of conductance. It cause the edge-localized topologically trivial states to be insulated with zero conductance, while the nonlocally distributed topologically nontrivial states always have a quantized conductance 2e^2/h. This dramatic change associated with topological phase transition for zero-mode differential conductance at zero bias is independent of the structure of leads and the coupling strength. We also examine the finite size effect of the superconducting chain and the coherence effect between zero mode and non-zero energy modes on the differential conductance in this two-terminal Majorana device.

Dualities are hidden symmetries that map seemingly unrelated physical systems onto each other. The goal of this work is to systematically construct families of Hamiltonians endowed with a given duality and to provide a universal description of Hamiltonians families near self-dual points. We focus on tight-binding models (also known as coupled-mode theories), which provide an effective description of systems composed of coupled harmonic oscillators across physical domains. We start by considering the general case in which group-theoretical arguments suffice to construct families of Hamiltonians with dualities by combining irreducible representations of the duality operation in parameter space and in operator space. When additional constraints due to system specific features are present, a purely group theoretic approach is no longer sufficient. To overcome this complication, we reformulate the existence of a duality as a minimization problem which is amenable to standard optimization and numerical continuation algorithms. Combined with existing procedures to physically implement coupled-resonator Hamiltonians, our approach enables on demand design of photonic, mechanical, thermal, or electronic metamaterials with dualities.

The topological nodal-line semimetals (NLSMs) possess a loop of Dirac nodes in the k space with linear dispersion, different from the point nodes in Dirac/Weyl semimetals. While the quantum transport associated with the topologically nontrivial Dirac fermions has been investigated extensively, features uniquely associated with the extended nodal lines remain to be demonstrated. Here, we investigate the quantum oscillations (QOs) in the nodal-line semimetal ZrSiS, with the electron transport along the c axis, and magnetic field rotating in the ab plane. The extremal orbits identified through the field orientation dependence of the QOs interlock with the nodal line, leading to a nonzero Berry phase. Most importantly, the Berry phase shows a significant dependence on the magnetic field orientation, which we argue to be due to the finite spin-orbit coupling gap. Our results demonstrate the importance of the spin-orbit coupling and the nodal-line dispersion in understanding the quantum transport of NLSMs.

Nowadays the development of high-field magnets strongly relies on the performance of superconducting materials. Iron-based superconductors exhibit high upper critical fields and low electromagnetic anisotropy, making them particularly attractive for high-field applications, especially in particle accelerator magnets, nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers, medical magnetic resonance imaging systems and nuclear fusion reactors. Herein, through an industrially scalable and cost-effective manufacturing strategy, a practical level critical current density up to 1.1x10^5 A/cm2 at 4.2 K in an external magnetic field of 10 T was achieved in Cu/Ag composite sheathed Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 superconducting tapes. The preparation strategy combines flat rolling to induce grain texture and a subsequent hot-isostatic-pressing densification. By varying the parameters of rolling, the degree of grain texture was engineered. It is found that the transport properties of the Ba1-xKxFe2As2 tapes can be enhanced by applying a large amount of deformation during rolling, which can be attributed to the improved degree of c-axis texture. Microstructure characterizations on the highest-performance tape demonstrate that the Ba1-xKxFe2As2 phase has a uniform element distribution and small grains with good connectivity. Grain boundary pinning is consequently enhanced as proved by large currents circulating through the sample even at 25 K. Our work proves that Cu/Ag composite sheathed Ba1-xKxFe2As2 superconducting tapes can be a promising competitor for practical high-field applications in terms of the viable, scalable and cost-effective fabrication strategy applied and the high transport properties achieved in this work.

Combining the bond-order-length-strength (BOLS) and bonding and binding energy (BB) models with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we studied the atomic bonding and binding energy behavior of Bi atoms adsorbed on the Li(110) surface. We found that the Bi atoms adsorbed on the Li(110) surface form two-dimensional (2D) geometric structures, including letter-, hexagon-, galaxy-, crown-, field-, and cobweb-shaped structures. Thus, we obtained the following quantitative information: (i) the field-shaped structure can be considered the bulk structure; (ii) the field-shaped structure of Bi atom formation has a 5d energy level of 22.727 eV, and in the letter shape structure, this energy is shifted to values greater than 0.342 eV;and (iii) the Bi/Li(110) heterojunction transfers charge from the inner Li atomic layer to the outermost Bi atomic layer. In addition, we analyzed the bonding and electronic dynamics involved in the formation of the Bi/Li(110) heterojunctions using zone-selective electron spectroscopy technology. This work provides a theoretical reference for the fine tuning of binding energies and chemical bonding at the interfaces of 2D metallic materials.

We benchmark write energy and speed performances of type Y SOT cells based on various SOT materials experimentally reported in the literature, including heavy metals, topological insulators and semimetals. The electronic structures and bond relaxation of two-dimensional (2D) Sb/transition metal disulfides (TMDs, MoSe2, and MoTe2) van der Waals heterostructures were systematically studied using the bond-charge (BC) correlation and hybrid density functional theory. We found that the Sb/MoSe2 and Sb/MoTe2 heterostructures had indirect band gaps of 0.701 and 0.808 eV, respectively; further, these heterostructures effectively modulated the band gaps of MoSe2 (1.463 eV) and MoTe2 (1.173 eV). The BC correlation revealed four bonding and electronic contributions (electron-holes, antibonding, nonbonding, and bonding states) of the heterostructures. Our results provide an in-depth understanding of the Sb/TMD van der Waals heterojunction, which should be utilised to design 2D metal/semiconductor-based devices.

We investigated the mechanism of Na/Ta(110) and Ta/Na(110) interfaces using a combination of bond band barrier (BBB) and zone selective electron spectroscopy (ZES) correlation. We found that 7/9 ML and 8/9 ML Ta metal on a Na(110) surface form one dimensional (1D) chain and two dimensional (2D) ring structures, respectively. Moreover, we show that on Na(110), the Ta-induced Na(110) surface binding energy (BE) shifts are dominated by quantum entrapment. On the contrary, on a Ta(110) surface, the Na-induced Ta(110) surface BE shifts are dominated by polarization. Thus, the BBB and ZES strategy could potentially be used for designing 1D and 2D metals with desired structures and properties.

Silver (Ag) coatings have been widely used in many industry areas due to their excellent conductivity. However, wider applications of Ag coatings have been hindered by their poor mechanical properties. In this research, to improve the mechanical performance, Ag-Bi nano-composite coatings were prepared by a novel ionic co-discharge method. A systematic study of the microstructure, mechanical properties, electrical conductivity and antibacterial behavior of the resulting coating was performed. The results indicated that after adding an appropriate amount of Bi containing solution into the Ag plating solution, Ag-Bi nano-particles were in-situ formed and distributed uniformly throughout the coating matrix, resulting in a significant improvement in the mechanical properties. The hardness of Ag-Bi coating was increased by 60% compared to that of the pure Ag coating. The corrosion resistance of Ag-Bi coatings was also enhanced. The outcome of this research may find a broader application in electronics, jewelry, aerospace and other industries.

We comparatively studied the critical current density, magnetization and specific heat of the rolled and the hot-pressed Sr1-xKxFe2As2 tapes. The Schottky anomaly that is obvious in the specific heat of the rolled tape disappears in the hot-pressed tape. Moreover, the hot-pressed tape has a higher fraction of superconductivity and a narrower distribution of superconducting transition temperature than the rolled tape. Combined with the magnetization data, we conclude that sintering under high pressure provides a better environment for complete chemical reaction and more homogenous dopant distribution, which is beneficial to the global current of a superconductor.

The high upper critical field and low anisotropy of iron-based superconductors make them being particularly attractive for high-field applications. However, the current carrying capability needs to be enhanced by overcoming the weak-link effect between misaligned grains inside wire and tape conductors. Here we demonstrate a high transport critical current density (Jc) reaching 1.5x10^5 A/cm^2 (Ic = 437 A) at 4.2 K and 10 T in Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 (Ba-122) tapes prepared by a combination of conventional powder-in-tube method and optimized hot-press technique. The transport Jc measured at 4.2 K under high magnetic fields of 27 T is still on the level of 5.5x10^4 A/cm^2, which is much higher than those of low-temperature superconductors. This is the first report of hot-pressed Ba-122 superconducting tapes and these Jc values are by far the highest ever reported for iron-based superconducting wires and tapes. These high-performance tapes exhibit high degree of c-axis texture of Ba-122 grains and low anisotropy of transport Jc, showing great potential for construction of high-field superconducting magnets.

The local electronic and atomic structures of the high-quality single crystal of SrFeO3-{delta} ({delta}~0.19) were studied using temperature-dependent x-ray absorption and valence-band photoemission spectroscopy (VB-PES) to investigate the origin of anisotropic resistivity in the ab-plane and along the c-axis close to the region of thermal hysteresis (near temperature for susceptibility maximum, Tm~78 K). All experiments herein were conducted during warming and cooling processes. The Fe L3,2-edge X-ray linear dichrois results show that during cooling from room temperature to below the transition temperature, the unoccupied Fe 3d eg states remain in persistently out-of-plane 3d3z2-r2 orbitals. In contrast, in the warming process below the transition temperature, they change from 3d3z2-r2 to in-plane 3dx2-y2 orbitals. The nearest-neighbor (NN) Fe-O bond lengths also exhibit anisotropic behavior in the ab-plane and along the c-axis below Tm. The anisotropic NN Fe-O bond lengths and Debye-Waller factors stabilize the in-plane Fe 3dx2-y2 and out-of-plane 3d3z2-r2 orbitals during warming and cooling, respectively. Additionally, a VB-PES study further confirms that a relative band gap opens at low temperature in both the ab-plane and along the c-axis, providing the clear evidence of the charge-density-wave nature of SrFeO3-{delta} ({delta}~ 0.19) single crystal.

Iron-pnictides are hotly studied since 2008 in the superconducting materials research area, due to their special properties and unclear mechanism. Big achievement has been made in the pnictide research during the past years. For practical uses, pnictide superconductor should be fabricated in a long wire form which can be used for different devices. In this work, 100 m class 7-core Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2 (Sr122) tapes have been made using the powder-in-tube technique, which is reported for the first time. Clearly, an average Jc of 1.3x10^4 A/cm^2 at 10 T was reached over the 115 meter length, showing a high property and good uniformity of 100 meter level Sr122 tapes. Using the 10 m long Sr122 tapes, two double-pancake coils were fabricated by a wind and reaction technique. No transport current could be measured for the coil made from the mono-filamentary tape. However, transport Ic was obtained in the coil made from the 7-filamentary tape. The factors which affect the superconducting property of the coil were discussed in this work.

We have studied vortex pinning and dynamics in a Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2 superconducting tape with critical current density Jc~0.1 MA/cm2 at 4.2 K and 10 T. It is found that grain boundary pinning is dominant in the vortex pinning mechanism. Furthermore, we observe large density of dislocations which can also serve as effective pinning centers. We find that the temperature dependence of critical current density is in agreement with the model of vortices pinned via spatial fluctuation of charge carrier mean free path. Magnetic relaxation measurement indicates that the magnetization depends on time in a logarithmic way. The relaxation rate in the low and intermediate temperature region is small, and it exhibits a weak temperature and field dependence. A crossover from elastic creep to plastic creep regime is observed. Finally, we conclude a vortex phase diagram for the high performance Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2 superconducting tape.

In this work, 7-,19- and 114-filament Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2 (Sr-122) superconducting wires and tapes with silver as matrix and iron as outer reinforcing sheath were produced by the ex situ powder-in-tube method. The mass densities of Sr-122 phase in 7- and 19-filament conductors were investigated by microhardness characterization, which revealed a positive correlation between hardness and transport critical current density (Jc) in round wires and flat tapes with various thicknesses. For Sr-122/Ag/Fe 114-filament conductors, in which an average cross-sectional filament size smaller than 50 microns was achieved by drawing into round wires of 2.0 mm in diameter, the transport Jc can be significantly enhanced by flat rolling, as for the 7- and 19-filament conductors. The highest transport Jc of the 7-,19- and 114-filament Sr-122/Ag/Fe tapes reached 1.4x10^4, 8.4x10^3 and 6.3x10^3 A cm-2 (4.2 K, 10 T), respectively, showing a Jc degradation with the increase of filament number. This Jc degradation can be ascribed to the sausage effect for filaments in longitudinal direction and the grain refinement in these very fine filaments.

A tunable double optomechanically induced transparency (OMIT) with a squeezed field is investigated in a system consisting of an optomechanical cavity coupled to a charged nanomechanical resonator via Coulomb interaction. Such a double OMIT can be achieved by adjusting the strength of the Coulomb interaction, and observed even with a single-photon squeezed field at finite temperature. Since it is robust against the cavity decay, but very sensitive to some parameters, such as the environmental temperature, the model under our consideration can be applied as a quantum thermometer for precision measurement of the environmental temperature within the reach of current techniques.

Copper sheath is the first choice for manufacturing high-Tc superconducting wires and tapes because of its high electrical and thermal conductivities, low cost and good mechanical properties. However, Cu can easily react with superconducting cores, such as BSCCO, MgB2 and pnictides, during high-temperature sintering process and therefore drastically decrease the transport Jc. Here, we report the fabrication of Cu-sheathed Sr1-xKxFe2As2 tapes with superior Jc performance using a simple hot pressing method that is capable of eliminating the lengthy high-temperature sintering required by conventional process. We obtained high-quality Sr1-xKxFe2As2 tapes with processing at 800oC for 30 minutes and measured high Tc and sharp transition. This rapid fabrication method can effectively thwart the diffusion of Cu into polycrystalline Sr-122 core. As a consequence, we achieved high transport Jc of 3.1x10^4 A/cm^2 in 10 T and 2.7x10^4 A/cm^2 in 14 T at 4.2 K. The in-field Jc performance is by far the highest reported for Cu-sheathed high-Tc conductors. Dispersed barrier-hardening (DBH) model was applied to predict the hardness increments based on TEM analysis. The predicted hardness increments are consistent with the values obtained by nanoindentation tests. It is found that dislocation loops and He bubbles are hard barriers against dislocation motion and they are the main contributions to He irradiation-induced hardening of MNHS steel. The obstacle strength of He bubbles is stronger than the obstacle strength of dislocation loops.

High-performance Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2 (Sr-122) tapes have been successfully fabricated using hot pressing (HP) process. The effect of HP temperatures (850-925 C) on the c-axis texture, resistivity, Vickers micro-hardness, microstructure and critical current properties has been systematically studied. Taking advantage of high degree of c-axis texture, well grain connectivity and and large concentration of strong-pinning defects, we are able to obtain an excellent Jc of 1.2x10^5 A/cm^2 at 4.2 K and 10 T for Sr-122 tapes. More importantly, the field dependence of Jc turns out to be very weak, such that in 14 T the Jc remains ~1.0x10^5 A/cm^2. These Jc values are the highest ever reported so far for iron-pnictide wires and tapes, achieving the level desired for practical applications. Our results clearly strengthen the position of iron-pnictide conductors as a competitor to the conventional and MgB2 superconductors for high field applications.

Successful magnet applications require fabrication of polycrystalline superconducting wires that exhibit large in-field Jc, which is limited by poor grain coupling and weak-link behavior at grain boundaries. Here we report our recent achievement in the develo** Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2 tapes with transport Jc up to 0.1 MA/cm2 at 10 T and 4.2 K. This value is by far the highest ever recorded for iron based superconducting wires and has surpassed the threshold for practical application for the first time. The synergy effects of enhanced grain connectivity, alleviation of the weak-link behavior at grain boundaries, and the strong intrinsic pinning characteristics led to the superior Jc performance exhibited in our samples. We report unconventional thermoelectric power (Seebeck coefficient, S) in L10 structured FePt films. The temperature dependence of S can be well fitted by a phenomenological expression consisting of electron diffusion and magnon-drag contributions. Interestingly, the magnon drag coefficient carries an opposite sign to that of electron diffusion, revealing a dominant contribution from the elusive electron-magnon Umklapp scattering. DFT calculations identify several bands crossing the Brillouin zone boundaries, facilitating the Umklapp process. The large spin-orbit coupling in FePt results in strong mixing of majority and minority spins among some of those bands, greatly enhancing the electron-magnon scattering.

Improving transport current has been the primary issue for practical application of superconducting wires and tapes. However, the porous nature of powder-in-tube (PIT) processed iron-based superconducting tapes is thought to be one of the important reasons for the low Jc values. In this work, the superconducting core density of ex-situ Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2 tapes was significantly improved by employing a simple hot pressing as an alternative route for final sintering. At 4.2 K, the transport Jc values showed excellent values of 5.1x10^4 A/cm^2 at 10 T and 4.3x10^4 A/cm^2 at 14 T, respectively, which attain the Jc level desired for practical applications. Moreover, the Jc values exhibited extremely weak magnetic field dependence. These results clearly demonstrate that PIT pnictide wire conductors are very promising for high field magnet applications.

Crystal structures and microstructural features, such as structural phase transitions, defect structures, chemical and structural inhomogeneities, are known to have profound effects on the physical properties of superconducting materials. Recently, a large amount of works on the structural properties of Fe-based high-Tc superconductors have been published. This review article will mainly focus on typical microstructural features in samples that have been well characterized by physical measurements. (a) Certain common structural features are discussed. In particular, crystal structural features for different superconducting families, local structural distortions in the Fe2Pn2 (Pn=P, As, Sb) or Fe2Ch2 (Ch=S, Se, Te) blocks, and structural transformations in the 122 system. (b) In FeTe(Se) (11-family), the superconductivity, chemical and structural inhomogeneities are investigated and discussed in correlation with superconductivity. (c) In K0.8Fe1.6+xSe2 system, we focus on typical compounds with emphasis on Fe-vacancy order and phase separations. The microstructural features in other superconducting materials are also briefly discussed.

We report the temperature dependence of the transport critical current density (Jc) in textured Sr1-xKxFe2As2/Fe (Sr122) tapes fabricated by an ex situ powder-in-tube process. Critical currents were measured in magnetic fields up to 0-15 T and/or the temperature range 4.2-30 K by using a dc four-probe method. It was found that textured Sr122 tapes heat-treated at low temperatures showed higher transport Jc performance due to much improved intergrain connections. At temperatures of 20 K, easily obtained using a cryocooler, Jc reached ~ 10^4 A/cm^2 in self field, which is the highest transport value of ferropnictide wires and tapes reported so far. Magneto-optical imaging observations further revealed significant and well distributed global Jc at 20 K in our tapes. These results demonstrate that 122 type superconducting tapes are promising for high-field applications at around 20 K.

At 4.2 K, the Jc values show extremely weak magnetic field dependence and reach high values of 1.7x10^4 A/cm^2 at 10 T and 1.4x10^4 A/cm^2 at 14 T, respectively, these values are by far the highest ever reported for iron based wires and approach the Jc level desired for practical applications. Transmission electron microscopy investigations revealed that amorphous oxide layers at grain boundaries were significantly reduced by Sn addition which resulted in greatly improved intergranular connectivity. Our results demonstrated the strong potential of using iron based superconductors for high field applications.

Seven-core Ag/Fe sheathed Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2 (Sr-122) superconducting wires were produced by the ex situ powder-in-tube (PIT) method. The relationship between the cold-work deformation process and the superconducting properties of wires were systematically studied. It was found that flat rolling can efficiently increase the density of the superconducting core and largely improve the transport critical current density (Jc) of as-drawn wires. The Jc of the best sample achieved 21.1 kA/cm^2 at 4.2 K in self field, and showed very weak magnetic field dependence in high fields. Our result suggested a promising future of multifilamentary iron-based superconductors in practical application.

The effect of annealing time and different dopants on the transport properties of the BaxK1-xFe2As2 tapes were systematically studied. By co-do** with Ag and Pb, the transport critical current density Jc of BaxK1-xFe2As2 tapes was significantly improved in whole field region and the highest transport Jc was up to 1.4x10^4 A/cm^2 (Ic=100 A) at 4.2K in self field. It is proposed that the superior Jc in the co-doped samples are due to the combine effect of Pb do** at low fields and Ag do** at high fields.

Compared with the other samples, the samples fabricated by SmAs, FeO, Fe2As, and SmF3 have the smallest arsenide impurity phase and voids. As a result, these samples possess much denser structure and better grain connectivity. Moreover, among the three kinds of samples fabricated in this work, this kind of sample has the highest zero-resistivity temperature ~40 K and largest critical current density ~4600 A/cm^2 in self-field at 4.2 K. This is the highest Jc values reported so far for SmFeAsO1-xFx wires and tapes.

In this paper we report the superconductivity above 40 K in the electron do** single crystal Ca1-xRexFe2As2 (Re = La, Ce, Pr). The x-ray diffraction patterns indicate high crystalline quality and c-axis orientation. the resistivity anomaly in the parent compound CaFe2As2 is completely suppressed by partial replacement of Ca by rare earth and a superconducting transition reaches as high as 43 K, which is higher than the value in electron do** FeAs-122 compounds by substituting Fe ions with transition metal, even surpasses the highest values observed in hole do** systems with a transition temperature up to 38 K. The upper critical field has been determined with the magnetic field along ab-plane and c-axis, yielding the anisotropy of 2~3. Hall-effect measurements indicate that the conduction in this material is dominated by electron like charge carriers. Our results explicitly demonstrate the feasibility of inducing superconductivity in Ca122 compounds via electron do** using aliovalent rare earth substitution into the alkaline earth site, which should add more ingredients to the underlying physics of the iron-based superconductors.

We report here an atomic resolution study of the structure and composition of the grain boundaries in polycrystalline Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2 superconductor. A large fraction of grain boundaries contain amorphous layers larger than the coherence length, while some others contain nanometer-scale particles sandwiched in between amorphous layers. We also find that there is significant oxygen enrichment at the grain boundaries. Such results explain the relatively low transport critical current density (Jc) of polycrystalline samples with respect to that of bicrystal films.
