We report the magnetic properties of a cobalt oxalate metal-organic-framework featuring the hyperoctagon lattice. Our thermodynamic measurements reveal the $J_{\rm{eff}}$ = 1/2 state of the high-spin Co$^{2+}$ (3$\textit{d}^{7}$) ion and the two successive magnetic transitions at zero field with two-stage entropy release. $^{13}$C-NMR measurements reveal the absence of an internal magnetic field in the intermediate temperature phase. Multiple field-induced phases are observed before full saturation at around 40 T. We argue the unique cobalt oxalate network gives rise to the Kitaev interaction and/or a bond frustration effect, providing an unconventional platform for frustrated magnetism on the hyperoctagon lattice.

High magnetic fields up to 105 T have been utilized in deriving the upper critical field $B_{\rm c2}$ of LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$H$_x$ throughout whole temperatures below $T_{\rm c}$. Resistivity measurements demonstrate that $B_{\rm c2}$ behaves differently in samples with $x = 0.12$ (SC1) from those with 0.32 (SC2). In SC1, the two-band model assuming the $s$-wave pairing gives a good fitting with repulsive intraband interaction and dominant interband coupling. In SC2, we have to assume attractive intraband interaction with weak interband coupling, which in fact suggests a non-$s$-wave pairing in view of the strong Coulomb repulsion. These results support the possibility that SC1 and SC2 have different pairing symmetries.

The magnetic ground state of oxynitride pyrochlore Lu$_2$Mo$_2$O$_{5-y}$N$_2$, a candidate compound for the quantum spin liquid ($S=1/2$, Mo$^{5+}$), was studied by muon spin rotation/relaxation experiment. In contrast to Lu$_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$ ($S=1$, Mo$^{4+}$) which exhibits the spin-glass behavior with a freezing temperature $T_g\simeq16$ K, no such spin freezing or long range magnetic order was observed down to 0.3 K. Moreover, two separate magnetic domains were detected below $\sim$13 K, which were characterized by differences in spin dynamics. The first is the "sporadic" spin fluctuation seen in frustrated antiferromagnets, where the amplitude of the hyperfine fields suggests that the excitation comprises a local cluster of unpaired spins. The other is rapid paramagnetic fluctuation, which is only weakly suppressed at low temperatures. In place of the paramagnetic fluctuation, the volume fraction for the sporadic fluctuation steadily increases with decreasing temperature, indicating the formation of an excitation gap with a broad distribution of the gap energy involving null gap.

In the paramagnetic metallic state, the photo-reflectivity shows a sub-picosecond relaxation, followed by a featureless small offset. In the antiferromagnetic state slightly below $T_N$, however, the photo-reflectivity resurges over hundreds of picoseconds, which goes beyond the usual realm of the effective-temperature model. Our observations are consistent with the Lifshitz phase transition of Cd$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$ driven by the evolution of the local magnetic moment.

We report on a novel spin-charge fluctuation in the all-in-all-out pyrochlore magnet Cd$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$, where the spin fluctuation is driven by the conduction of thermally excited electrons/holes and associated fluctuation of Os valence. The fluctuation exhibits an activation energy significantly greater than the spin-charge excitation gap and a peculiar frequency range of $10^{6}$--$10^{10}$ s$^{-1}$. These features are attributed to the hop** motion of carriers as small polarons in the insulating phase, where the polaron state is presumably induced by the magnetoelastic coupling via the strong spin-orbit interaction. Such a coupled spin-charge-phonon fluctuation manifests as a part of the metal-insulator transition that is extended over a wide temperature range due to the modest electron correlation comparable with other interactions characteristic for 5$d$-subshell systems.

The spin-driven component of electric polarization in a single crystal of multiferroic BiFeO$_{3}$ was experimentally investigated in pulsed high magnetic fields up to 41 T. Sequential measurements of electric polarization for various magnetic field directions provide clear evidence of electric polarization normal to the hexagonal $c$ axis (${\bf P}_{\rm t}$) in not only the cycloidal phase, but also the field-induced canted antiferromagnetic phase. The direction of ${\bf P}_{\rm t}$ is directly coupled with the ferromagnetic moment in the canted antiferromagnetic phase, and thus controlled by changing the direction of the applied magnetic field. This magnetoelectric coupling is reasonably reproduced by the metal-ligand hybridization model.

We synthesized the 5d1-transition metal oxides AOsO4 (A = K, Rb, Cs) by solid-state reaction, and performed structure determination and magnetic and heat capacity measurements. It was found that they crystallize in a scheelite (A = K and Rb) or a quasi-scheelite structure (A = Cs) comprising of distorted diamond lattices of septivalent Os (d1) ions tetrahedrally coordinated by four oxide ions without local inversion symmetry; hence an antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling is expected in the crystals. The K and Rb compounds have Weiss temperatures of theta = -66 and -18 K, effective magnetic moments of mu_eff = 1.44 and 1.45 mu_B/Os, and antiferromagnetic transition temperatures of T_N = 36.9 and 21.0 K, respectively. In contrast, the Cs compound has theta = 12 K and mu_eff = 0.8 mu_B/Os without magnetic transition above 2 K, instead exhibiting a first-order structural transition at T_s = 152.5 K. The decline of the Os moment from 1.73 mu_B/Os for the simple d1 spin, particularly for Cs, is likely to originate from the antiparallel orbital moment, although the spin-orbit coupling is generally quenched in the low-lying e orbitals.

Inelastic neutron scattering was performed for an iron-based superconductor LaFeAsO0.9D0.1, where most of D (deuterium) replaces oxygen, while a tiny amount goes into interstitial sites. By first-principle calculation, we characterize the interstitial sites for D (and for H slightly mixed) with four equivalent potential minima. Below the superconducting transition temperature Tc = 26 K,new excitations emerge in the range 5-15 meV, while they are absent in the reference system LaFeAsO0.9F0.1. The strong excitations at 14.5 meV and 11.1 meV broaden rapidly around 15 K and 20 K, respectively, where each energy becomes comparable to twice of the superconducting gap. The strong excitations are ascribed to a quantum rattling, or a band motion of hydrogen, which arises only if the number of potential minima is larger than two.

High-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements ($Δ$E = 46 meV) have been performed on Cd$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$ through the metal-to-insulator transition (MIT). A magnetic excitation at 125 meV evolves continuously through the MIT, in agreement with recent Raman scattering results, and provides further confirmation for an all-in, all-out magnetic ground state. Asymmetry of this feature is likely a result of coupling between the electronic and magnetic degrees of freedom. We also observe a broad continuum of interband excitations centered at 0.3 eV energy loss. This is indicative of significant hybridization between Os 5$d$ and O 2$p$ states, and concurrent itinerant nature of the system. In turn, this suggests a possible break down of the free-ion model for Cd$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$.

The superconducting pyrochlore oxide Cd2Re2O7 is revisited with a particular emphasis on the sample-quality issue. The compound has drawn attention as the only superconductor (Tc = 1.0 K) that has been found in the family of α-pyrochlore oxides since its discovery in 2001. Moreover, it exhibits two characteristic structural transitions from the cubic pyrochlore structure, with the inversion symmetry broken at the first one at 200 K. Recently, it has attracted increasing attention as a candidate spin-orbit coupled metal (SOCM), in which specific Fermi liquid instability is expected to lead to an odd-parity order with spontaneous inversion-symmetry breaking [L. Fu, Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 026401 (2015)] and parity-mixing superconductivity [V. Kozii and L. Fu: Phys. Rev. Lett. 115 (2015) 207002; Y. Wang et al., Phys. Rev. B 93 (2016) 134512]. We review our previous experimental results in comparison with those of other groups in the light of the theoretical prediction of the SOCM, which we consider meaningful and helpful for future progress in understanding this unique compound.

A rich structural phase diagram is obtained, which contains at least seven phases and is almost consistent with the electronic phase diagram determined by previous resistivity measurements. Interestingly, the ISB transition vanishes at ~4 GPa, where the enhancement of the upper critical field was observed in resistivity. Moreover, it is shown that the point groups at 8 K, probably kept in the superconducting phases, sequentially transform into piezoelectric, ferroelectric, and centrosymmetric structures on the application of pressure.

In the 1/3 magnetization plateau above 28 T, the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 indicates an excitation gap with a large effective g factor in the range of 4.6-5.9, pointing to magnon bound states. Below 26 T where the gap has closed, the NMR spectra indicate small internal fields with a Gaussian-like distribution, whereas 1/T1 shows a power-law-like temperature dependence in the paramagnetic state, which resembles a slowing down of spin fluctuations associated with magnetic order. We discuss the possibility of an exotic spin state caused by the condensation of magnon bound states below the magnetization plateau.

In quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) system, the charge density wave (CDW) transition temperature TCDW is usually lower than the mean-field-theory predicted TMF and a CDW fluctuation region exists between them. Here, we investigate the physical properties of PdTeI single crystal containing quasi-1D PdTe chains. Surprisingly, we find that the carrier concentration decreases gradually before the long-range CDW ordering state occurring at T1 ~ 110 K, reflecting the existence of strong CDW fluctuation with possible pseudogap state at T >> T1 because of dynamic charge separation of Pd ions (Pd3+ -> Pd2+ + Pd4+). Moreover, the sliding CDW state appears below T2 ~ 6 K. Combined such low T2 with the feature of multiple quasi-1D bands, PdTeI exhibits exotic crossover behavior from negative to huge positive magnetoresistance under magnetic field and field-induced localization. Thus, PdTeI provides a novel platform for studying the CDW fluctuation and the interplay between magnetic field and CDW state.

We have synthesized high-quality single crystals of volborthite, a seemingly distorted kagome antiferromagnet, and carried out high-field magnetization measurements up to 74 T and 51V NMR measurements up to 30 T. An extremely wide 1/3 magnetization plateau appears above 28 T and continues over 74 T at 1.4 K, which has not been observed in previous study using polycrystalline samples. NMR spectra reveal an incommensurate order (most likely a spin-density wave order) below 22 T and a simple spin structure in the plateau phase. Moreover, a novel intermediate phase is found between 23 and 26 T, where the magnetization varies linearly with magnetic field and the NMR spectra indicate an inhomogeneous distribution of the internal magnetic field. This sequence of phases in volborthite bear a striking similarity to those of frustrated spin chains with a ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor coupling J1 competing with an antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor coupling J2.

The MIT and a magnetic transition to the all-in/all-out (AIAO) order occur simultaneously at 227 K. We propose a mechanism based on a Lifshitz transition induced by the AIAO magnetic order probably via strong spin-orbit couplings in the specific semimetallic band structure. It is suggested, moreover, that two observed puzzles, a finite conductivity near T = 0 and an emergence of weak ferromagnetic moments, are not bulk properties but originate at magnetic domain walls between two kinds of AIAO domains.

YbCo$_2$Ge$_4$ possesses the Ising-type ground-state doublet, namely the simplest ones of uniaxially up or down, $|\pm \sim 7/2\rangle$. It is clearly manifested through comprehensive resistivity, magnetization, specific heat, and NQR/NMR experiments. Large pseudospin state usually tends to order in simple magnetisms, or hard to be screened by Kondo effect. Therefore, the discovery of the quantum criticality of the fluctuating large spins opens a new door to new-material search and theoretical studies.

Two different antiferromagnetic domains related by time-reversal symmetry could be distinguished and have been mapped within the same single crystal. The two types of domains are akin to magnetic twins and were expected - yet unobserved so far - in the all-in/all-out model. Even though the magnetic domains are antiferromagnetic, we show that their distribution can be controlled using a magnetic field-cooling procedure.

Compositionally tunable vanadium oxyhydrides Sr2VO4-xHx (x = 0 - 1) without considerable anion vacancy were synthesized by high-pressure solid state reaction. The crystal structures and their properties were characterized by powder neutron diffraction, synchrotron X-ray diffraction, thermal desorption spectroscopy, and first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The hydrogen anions selectively replaced equatorial oxygen sites in the VO6 layers via statistical substitution of hydrogen in the low x region (x < 0.2). A new orthorhombic phase (Immm) with an almost entirely hydrogen-ordered structure formed from the K2NiF4-type tetragonal phase with x > 0.7. Based on the DFT calculations, the degree of oxygen/hydrogen anion ordering is strongly correlated with the bonding interaction between vanadium and the ligands.

The remarkable structural feature is to have the M-Ge-Ch pyrite-type building units, stacking with Ba-Ch layers alternatively along c axis. It is very rare and novel that pyrite-type subunits as the building blocks in the layered compounds. Theoretical calculations and experimental results indicate that there are strongly polarized covalent bonds between Ge and Ch atoms, forming heteromolecule-like anions in these compounds. Moreover, Ge atoms in this structure exhibit unusual valence state (~ +1) due to the tetrahedral coordination environment of Ge atoms along with M and Ch atoms simultaneously.

High-temperature (high-$T_{\rm c}$) superconductivity appears as a consequence of the carrier-do** of an undoped parent compound exhibiting antiferromagnetic order; thereby, ground-state properties of the parent compound are closely relevant to the superconducting state. On the basis of the concept, a spin-fluctuation has been addressed as an origin of pairing of the superconducting electrons in cuprates. Whereas, there is growing interest in the pairing mechanism such as an unconventional spin-fluctuation or an advanced orbital-fluctuation due to the characteristic multi-orbital system in iron-pnictides. Here, we report the discovery of an antiferromagnetic order as well as a unique structural transition in electron-overdoped LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$H$_x$ ($x$ ~ 0.5), whereby another parent phase was uncovered, albeit heavily doped. The unprecedented two-dome superconducting phases observed in this material can be interpreted as a consequence of the carrier-do** starting from the original at $x\sim0$ and advanced at $x\sim0.5$ parent phases toward the intermediate region. The bipartite parent phases with distinct physical properties in the second magnetic phase provide us with an interesting example to illustrate the intimate interplay among the magnetic interaction, structural change and orbital degree of freedom in iron-pnictides.

Rattling dynamics have been identified as fundamental to superconductivity in defect pyrochlore osmates and aluminium vanadium intermetallics, as well as low thermal conductivity in clathrates and filled skutterudites. Combining inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements and ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we use a new approach to investigate rattling in the Al-doped defect pyrochlore tungstates: AAl0.33W1.67O6 (A = K, Rb, Cs). We find that although all the alkali metals rattle, the rattling of the K atoms is unique, involving local diffusion within a cage as well as vibrations at a range of frequencies. We show that the novel K rattling is driven by the strong anharmonicity and anisotropy of the local potentials around the K atoms, both of which are a consequence of the small size of the K rattler. Our findings may open new possibilities for phonon engineering in thermoelectric materials.

Spinodal decomposition is a ubiquitous phenomenon leading to phase separation from a uniform solution. We show that a spinodal decomposition occurs in a unique combination of two rutile compounds of TiO2 and VO2, which are chemically and physically distinguished from each other: TiO2 is a wide-gap insulator with photo catalytic activities and VO2 is assumed to be a strongly correlated electron system which exhibits a dramatic metal-insulator transition at 342 K. The spinodal decomposition takes place below 830 K at a critical composition of 34 mol% Ti, generates a unidirectional composition modulation along the c axis with a wavelength of approximately 6 nm, and finally results in the formation of self-assembled lamella structures made up of Ti-rich and V-rich layers stacked alternately with 30-50 nm wavelengths. A metal-insulator transition is not observed in quenched solid solutions with intermediate compositions but emerges in the thin V-rich layers as the result of phase separation. Interestingly, the metal-insulator transition remains as sharp as in pure VO2 even in such thin layers and takes place at significantly reduced temperatures of 310-340 K, which is probably due to a large misfit strain induced by lattice matching at the coherent interface.

We show that YCr6Ge6, comprising a kagome lattice made up of Cr atoms, is a plausible candidate compound for a kagome metal that is expected to exhibit anomalous phenomena such as flat-band ferromagnetism. Resistivity, magnetization, and heat capacity are measured on single crystals of YCr6Ge6, and band structure calculations are performed to investigate the electronic structure. Curie-Weiss-like behavior in magnetic susceptibility, T2 dependence in resistivity, and a Sommerfeld coefficient doubly enhanced from a calculated value indicate a moderately strong electron correlation. Interestingly, the in-plane resistivity is twice as large as the interplane resistivity, which is contrary to the simple expectation from the layered structure. Band structure calculations demonstrate that there are partially flat bands slightly below the Fermi level near the Γ point, which is ascribed to Cr 3d3z2-r2 bands and may govern the properties of this compound.

Resonant x-ray diffraction experiments were performed for the metallic iridium oxide IrO$_{2}$. We observed anisotropic tensor of susceptibility (ATS) scattering, the spectrum of which shows a sharp contrast between the $L_{3}$ and $L_{2}$ edges. At the $L_{3}$ edge, resonance excitations were clearly observed from the core 2$p$ orbitals to both the 5$d$ $t_{2g}$ and $e_{g}$ orbitals. In contrast, the resonance mode associated with 5$d$ $t_{2g}$ orbitals was indiscernible at the $L_{2}$ edge. This contrasting behavior indicates that Ir 5$d$ $t_{2g}$ orbitals are fairly close to the $J_{\rm eff}$ = 1/2 state due to the strong spin--orbit coupling in 5$d$ transition metal ions, as in the Mott insulator Sr$_{2}$IrO$_{4}$. Our results clearly demonstrate that ATS scattering is a useful probe for investigating complex orbital states in a metallic state. Such states induce novel phenomena such as the spin Hall effect.

Low-energy rattling modes and their effects on superconductivity are studied in the cage compound GaxV2Al20. A series of polycrystalline samples of 0 < x =< 0.6 are examined through resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity measurements. A weak-coupling BCS superconductivity is observed below Tc = 1.4-1.7 K for all the samples. For small Ga contents below 0.20, approximately 30% of the cages are occupied by rattling Al atoms having an Einstein temperature TE of 23 K, probably with most Ga atoms substituting for the cage-forming Al atoms. For higher Ga contents, approximately 0.05 Ga and 0.25-0.35 Al atoms coexist statistically inside the cages and behave as rattlers with TE ~ 8 and 23 K, respectively. A significant effect of Ga rattling on the superconductivity is clearly evidenced by the observation of a sharp rise in Tc by 8% at x = 0.20 when 0.05 Ga atoms are introduced into the case. Probably, the electron-phonon interaction is significantly enhanced by an additional contribution to the phonon density of states from the extremely low energy rattling modes of Ga atoms. In addition, a large softening of the acoustic modes is observed for x => 0.20, suggesting that the cage itself becomes anomalously soft in the presence of low-energy Ga rattling modes.

Cd2Os2O7 shows a peculiar metal-insulator transition at 227 K with magnetic ordering in a frustrated pyrochlore lattice, but its magnetic structure in the ordered state and the transition origin are yet uncovered. We observed a commensurate magnetic peak by resonant x-ray scattering in a high-quality single crystal. X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering experiments confirmed that the transition is not accompanied with any spatial symmetry breaking. We propose a noncollinear all-in/all-out spin arrangement on the tetrahedral network made of Os atoms. Based on this we suggest that the transition is not caused by Slater mechanism as believed earlier but by an alternative mechanism related to the formation of the specific tetrahedral magnetic order on the pyrochlore lattice in the presence of strong spin-orbit interactions.

The chemical composition, crystal structure, and magnetic properties of a manganese zinc alloy with an ideal composition of YMn2Zn20, which comprises a pyrochlore lattice made of Mn atoms, are reported. The compound is stable only when In or Al is partially substituted for Zn. We have determined the actual chemical formula as YMn2+dZn20-x-dMx, with M = In or Al, and have identified the characteristic preferences with which the incorporated M and excess Mn atoms occupy the three crystallographic sites for Zn atoms. The Mn atoms in the pyrochlore lattice possess small magnetic moments that interact with each other antiferromagnetically but exhibit no long-range order above 0.4 K, probably owing to the geometrical frustration of the pyrochlore lattice. As a result, the effective mass of the conduction electrons is considerably enhanced, as observed in the related pyrochlore-lattice compounds (Y,Sc)Mn2 and LiV2O4. However, the presence of excess Mn atoms with large localized magnetic moments comparable to spin 5/2 tends to mask the inherent magnetism of the pyrochlore Mn atoms. It is suggested that "YMn2Zn18In2" with neither excess Mn atoms nor site disorder would be an ideal compound for further study.

Polycrystalline samples with A = Al, Ga, Y, and La are studied through resistivity and heat capacity measurements. Weak-coupling BCS superconductivity is observed below Tc = 1.49, 1.66, and 0.69 K for Ax = Al0.3, Ga0.2, and Y, respectively, but not above 0.4 K for Ax = La. Low-energy modes are detected only for A = Al and Ga, which are approximately described by the Einstein model with Einstein temperatures of 24 and 8 K, respectively. A weak but significant coupling between the low-energy modes, which are almost identical to those called rattling in recent study, and conduction electrons manifests itself as anomalous enhancement in resistivity at around low temperatures corresponding to the Einstein temperatures.

Rattling-induced superconductivity in the beta-pyrochlore oxide RbOs2O6 is investigated under high pressures up to 6 GPa. Resistivity measurements in a high-quality single crystal show that the superconducting transition temperature Tc increases gradually from 6.3 K at ambient pressure to 8.8 K at 3.5 GPa, surprisingly remains almost constant at 8.8 \pm 0.1 K in a wide pressure range between 3.5 (Po) and 4.8 GPa, and suddenly drops to 6.3 K at Ps = 4.9 GPa, followed by a gradual decrease with further pressure increase. Two anomalies in the temperature dependence of the normal-state resistivity are observed at Po < P < Ps and P > Ps, revealing the presence of two high-pressure phases corresponding to the changes in Tc. The rattling of the Rb ion inside a cage made of Os and O atoms may be slightly and seriously modified in these high-pressure phases that probably have cages of reduced symmetry, respectively, so that electron-rattler interactions that govern the superconducting and transport properties of beta-RbOs2O6 are significantly affected.

The observed spin arrangement is consistent with theoretical work predicting a unique superexchange interaction in the $J_{\rm eff} =1/2$ state and points to the universal importance of the spin-orbit coupling in Ir oxides, irrespective of the local coordination and lattice topology. We also propose that the non-magnetic resonant scattering is a powerful tool for unraveling an orbital state even in a metallic iridate.

Rattling-induced superconductivity in the β-pyrochlore oxide KOs2O6 is investigated under high pressure up to 5 GPa. Resistivity measurements in a high-quality single crystal reveal a gradual decrease in the superconducting transition temperature Tc from 9.7 K at 1.0 GPa to 6.5 K at 3.5 GPa, followed by a sudden drop to 3.3 K at 3.6 GPa. Powder X-ray diffraction experiments show a structural transition from cubic to monoclinic or triclinic at a similar pressure. The sudden drop in Tc is ascribed to this structural tran-sition, by which an enhancement in Tc due to a strong electron-rattler interaction present in the low-pressure cubic phase is abrogated as the rattling of the K ion is completely suppressed or weakened in the high-pressure phase of reduced symmetry. In addition, we find two anomalies in the temperature dependence of resistivity in the low-pressure phase, which may be due to subtle changes in rattling vibration.

We report on a ternary intermetallic compound, "YMn2Zn20", comprising a pyrochlore lattice made of Mn atoms. A series of In-doped single crystals undergo no magnetic long-range order down to 0.4 K, in spite of the fact that the Mn atom carries a local magnetic moment at high temperatures, showing Curie-Weiss magnetism. However, In-rich crystals exhibit spin-glass transitions at approximately 10 K due to a disorder arising from the substitution, while, with decreasing In content, the spin-glass transition temperature is reduced to 1 K. Then, heat capacity divided by temperature approaches a large value of 280 mJ K-2 mol-1, suggesting a significantly large mass enhancement for conduction electrons. This heavy-fermion-like behavior is not induced by the Kondo effect as in ordinary f-electron compounds, but by an alternative mechanism related to the geometrical frustration on the pyrochlore lattice, as in (Y,Sc)Mn2 and LiV2O4, which may allow spin entropy to survive down to low temperatures and to couple with conduction electrons.

Determining ground states of correlated electron systems is fundamental to understanding novel phenomena in condensed matter physics. A difficulty, however, arises in a geometrically frustrated system in which the incompatibility between the global topology of an underlying lattice and local spin interactions gives rise to macroscopically degenerate ground states, potentially prompting the emergence of quantum spin states, such as resonating valence bond (RVB) and valence bond solid (VBS). Although theoretically proposed to exist in a kagome lattice -- one of the most highly frustrated lattices in two dimensions (2D) being comprised of corner-sharing triangles -- such quantum-fluctuation-induced states have not been observed experimentally. Here we report the first realization of the "pinwheel" VBS ground state in the S=1/2 deformed kagome lattice antiferromagnet Rb2Cu3SnF12. In this system, a lattice distortion breaks the translational symmetry of the ideal kagome lattice and stabilizes the VBS state.

The superconducting properties of two beta-pyrochlore oxides, CsOs2O6 and RbOs2O6, are studied by thermodynamic and transport measurements using high-quality single crystals. It is shown that the character of superconductivity changes systematically from weak coupling for CsOs2O6 to moderately strong coupling for RbOs2O6, and finally to extremely strong coupling with BCS-type superconductivity for KOs2O6, with increasing Tc. Strong-coupling correction analyses of the superconducting properties reveal that a low-energy rattling mode of the alkali metal ions is responsible for the mechanism of the superconductivity in each compound. The large enhancement of Tc from Cs to K is attributed to the increase in the electron-rattler coupling with decreasing characteristic energy of the rattling and with increasing anharmonicity. The existence of weak anisotropy in the superconducting gap or in the electron-rattler interactions is found for the Cs and Rb compounds.

Ag2MnO2 is studied as a possible candidate compound for an antiferromagnetic XY spin model on a triangular lattice. In spite of the large Curie-Weiss temperature of -430 K found in magnetic susceptibi-lity, Mn3+ spins with S = 2 do not undergo a conventional long-range order down to 2 K probably owing to the geometrical frustration and two dimensionality in the system. Instead, a unique phase transition is found at 80 K, where specific heat exhibits a clear sign of a second-order phase transition, while magnetic susceptibility changes smoothly without a distinct anomaly. We think that this transition is related to the chirality degree of freedom associated with a short-range order, which has been expected for the classical XY spin model on a triangular lattice. On further cooling, spin-glass-like behavior is observed below 22 K, possibly corresponding to a quasi-long-range order.

A miniature Hall sensor array was used to detect magnetic induction locally in the vortex states of the $β$-pyrochlore superconductor KOs$_2$O$_6$. Below the first-order transition at $T_{\rm p}\sim 8$ K, which is associated with a change in the rattling motion of K ions, the lower critical field and the remanent magnetization both show a distinct decrease, suggesting that the electron-phonon coupling is weakened below the transition. At high magnetic fields, the local induction shows an unexpectedly large jump at $T_{\rm p}$ whose sign changes with position inside the sample. Our results demonstrate a novel redistribution of vortices whose energy is reduced abruptly below the first-order transition at $T_{\rm p}$.

We report magnetization, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies on the quasi-two-dimensional spin-gap system (CuCl)LaNb2O7, a possible candidate for the J1-J2 model on a square lattice. A sharp single NQR line is observed at the Cu and Cl sites, indicating that both Cu and Cl atoms occupy a unique site. However, the electric field gradient tensors at the Cu, Cl, and La sites do not have axial symmetry. This is incompatible with the reported crystal structure. Thus the J1-J2 model has to be modified. We propose alternative two-dimensional dimer models based on the NMR, NQR, and TEM results. The value of the hyperfine coupling constant at the Cu sites indicates that the spin density is mainly on the d(3z2-r2) orbital (z parallel c). At 1.5 K, Cu- and Nb-NMR signals disappear above the critical field Bc1 = 10.3 T determined from the onset of the magnetization, indicating a field-induced magnetic phase transition at Bc1.

Below the second transition at $T_{\rm p}\sim 8$ K, the superfluid density shows a step-like change with a suppression of effective critical temperature $T_{\rm c}$. Concurrently, the extracted quasiparticle scattering time shows a steep enhancement, indicating a strong coupling between the anomalous rattling motion of K ions and quasiparticles. The results imply that the rattling phonons help to enhance superconductivity, and that K sites freeze to an ordered state with long quasiparticle mean free path below $T_{\rm p}$.

Superconducting and normal-state properties of the beta-pyrochlore oxide KOs2O6 are studied by means of thermodynamic and transport measurements. It is shown that the superconductivity is of conventional s-wave type and lies in the extremely strong-coupling regime. Specific heat and resistivity measurements reveal that there are characteristic low-energy phonons that give rise to unusual scattering of carriers due to strong electron-phonon interactions. The entity of the low-energy phonons is ascribed to the heavy rattling of the K ion confined in an oversized cage made of OsO6 octahedra. It is suggested that this electron-rattler coupling mediates the Cooper pairing, resulting in the extremely strong-coupling superconductivity.

Resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements are carried out on a series of high-quality polycrystalline samples prepared at 200 C with Na content in a wide range of 0.35 =< x =< 0.70. It is found that dramatic changes in electronic properties take place at a critical Na concentration x* that lies between 0.58 and 0.59, which separates a Pauli paramagnetic and a Curie-Weiss metals. It is suggested that at x* the Fermi level touches the bottom of the a1g band at the gamma point, leading to a crucial change in the density of states across x* and the emergence of a small electron pocket around the gamma point for x > x*.

The Knight shift and the quadrupole splitting of all six vanadium sites were determined as a function of the direction of magnetic field perpendicular to the conducting b-axis. Magnetic properties of the three 1D structural units are remarkably heterogeneous. In particular, the V2 ladder unit shows pronounced charge disproportionation among the two (V2a and V2b) sites. At one of these sites, the absolute value of the Knight shift and 1/(T1T) increase steeply with decreasing temperature, suggesting development of ferromagnetic correlation.
