Geometrically confined superconductors often experience a breakdown in the quantization of magnetic flux owing to the incomplete screening of the supercurrent against the field penetration. In this study, we report that the confinement of a magnetic field occurs regardless of the dimensionality of the system, extending even to 1D linear potential systems. By utilizing a vector-field magnetic force microscope, we successfully create a vortex-antivortex pair connected by a 1D unquantized magnetic flux in ultra-thin superconducting films. Through an investigation of the manipulation and thermal behavior of the vortex pair, we uncover a long-range interaction mediated by the unquantized magnetic flux. These findings suggest a universal phenomenon of unquantized magnetic flux formation, independent of the geometry of the system. Our results present an experimental route for probing the impact of confinement on superconducting properties and order parameters in unconventional superconductors characterized by extremely low dimensionality.

Vertical charge order shapes the electronic properties in layered charge density wave (CDW) materials. Various stacking orders inevitably create nanoscale domains with distinct electronic structures inaccessible to bulk probes. Here, the stacking characteristics of bulk 1$T$-TaS$2$ are analyzed using scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. It is observed that Mott-insulating domains undergo a transition to band-insulating domains restoring vertical dimerization of the CDWs. Furthermore, STS measurements covering a wide terrace reveal two distinct band insulating domains differentiated by band edge broadening. These DFT calculations reveal that the Mott insulating layers preferably reside on the subsurface, forming broader band edges in the neighboring band insulating layers. Ultimately, buried Mott insulating layers believed to harbor the quantum spin liquid phase are identified. These results resolve persistent issues regarding vertical charge order in 1$T$-TaS$2$, providing a new perspective for investigating emergent quantum phenomena in layered CDW materials.

4Hb-TaS2 has been proposed to possess unconventional superconductivity with broken time reveral symmetry due to distinctive layered structure, featuring a heterojunction between a 2D triangular Mott insulator and a charge density wave metal. However, since a frustrated spin state in the correlated insulating layer is susceptible to charge ordering with carrier do**, it is required to investigate the charge distribution driven by inter-layer charge transfer to understand its superconductivity. Here, we use scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/S) to investigate the charge ordered phases of 1T-TaS2 layers within 4Hb-TaS2, explicitly focusing on the non-half-filled regime. Our STS results show an energy gap which exhibits an out-of-phase relation with the charge density. We ascribe the competition between on-site and nonlocal Coulomb repulsion as the driving force for the charge-ordered insulating phase of a doped triangular Mott insulator. In addition, we discuss the role of the insulating layer in the enhanced superconductivity of 4Hb-TaS2.

Solids undergoing a transition from order to disorder experience the proliferation of topological defects. The melting process generates transient quantum states. However, their dynamical nature with femtosecond lifetime hinders exploration with atomic precision. Here, we suggest an alternative approach to the dynamical melting process by focusing on the interface created by competing degenerate quantum states. We use a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) to visualize the unidirectional charge density wave (CDW) and its spatial progression ("static melting") across a twin domain boundary (TDB) in the layered material GdTe$_{3}$. Combining STM with a spatial lock-in technique, we reveal that the order parameter amplitude attenuates with the formation of dislocations and thus two different unidirectional CDWs coexist near the TDB, reducing the CDW anisotropy. Notably, we discover a correlation between this anisotropy and the CDW gap. Our study provides valuable insight into the behavior of topological defects and transient quantum states.

The most sought-after among these is the quantum spin liquid phase, but magnetic analogs of liquid, solid, and supersolid phases may also occur, producing fractional plateaus in the magnetization. Here, we investigate the experimental realization of these predicted phases in the Kagome material YCu3(OD)6+xBr3-x (x=0.5). By combining thermodynamic and Raman spectroscopic techniques, we provide evidence for fractionalized spinon excitations and observe the emergence of a 1/9 magnetization plateau. We present a temperature- and polarization-resolved phononic and electronic Raman scattering study in combination with the first-principles calculations on the kagome metal Ni$_3$In with anisotropic transport properties and non-Fermi liquid behavior. At temperatures below 50 K and down to 2 K, several Raman phonon modes, including particularly an interlayer shear mode, exhibit appreciable frequency and linewidth renormalization, reminiscent of the onset of the Kondo screening without an accompanying structural or magnetic phase transition. In addition, a low-energy electronic continuum observed in polarization perpendicular to the kagome planes reveals strong temperature dependence below 50 K, implying thermal depletion of incoherent quasiparticles, while the in-plane continuum remains invariant. These concomitant electronic and phononic Raman signatures suggest that Ni$_3$In undergoes an anisotropic electronic crossover from an incoherent to a coherent Kondo lattice regime below 50 K. We discuss the origin of the anisotropic incoherent-coherent crossover in association with the possible anisotropic Kondo hybridization involving localized Ni-$3d_{xz}$ flat-band electrons.

Apart from the Raman-active phonon modes, new peaks that appear in the energy range of 15 - 35 meV below the Néel temperature are assigned as one-magnon modes. The temperature evolution of one-magnon modes displays no significant thermal dependence in mode frequencies while the intensities decrease monotonically. Remarkably, one-magnons from all compounds show similar characteristics with a single dominant peak at lower energy and weaker side peaks at a couple of meV higher energy. Most importantly, we uncover a striking proportionality between the dominant magnon mode energies and the Néel temperature values. Our results suggest the Ru ions may have similar or the same magnetic phase in all pyrochlore ruthenates of our study. We have thus found an avenue for directly tuning the magnetic exchange interaction by the selection of the $A$-site ion.

The emergence of scalar Higgs-type amplitude modes in systems where symmetry is spontaneously broken has been a highly successful, paradigmatic description of phase transitions, with implications ranging from high-energy particle physics to low-energy condensed matter systems. Here, we uncover two successive high temperature phase transitions in the pyrochlore magnet Nd$_2$Ru$_2$O$_7$ at $T_{\mathrm{N}} = 147$ K and $T^* = 97$ K, that lead to giant phonon instabilities and culminate in the emergence of a highly coherent excitation. This coherent excitation, distinct from other phonons and from conventional magnetic modes, stabilizes at a low energy of 3 meV. We assign it to a collective Higgs-type amplitude mode, that involves bond energy modulations of the Ru$_4$ tetrahedra. Its striking two-fold symmetry, incompatible with the underlying crystal structure, highlights the possibility of multiple entangled broken symmetries.

The Shastry-Sutherland compound SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$ constituting orthogonally coupled dimers harbors a $S=0$ singlet ground state. The confluence of strong interdimer interaction and frustration engenders a spectrum of low-energy excitations including localized triplons as well as singlet and triplet bound states. Their dynamics are controlled by an external magnetic field and temperature. Here, we employ high-field Raman spectroscopy to map the field and temperature evolution of such bosonic composite quasiparticles on approaching the 1/8 magnetization plateau. Our study unveils that the magnetic field and thermal fluctuations show remarkably similar effects in melting the singlet bound states, but are disparate in their effects on the fine spectral shapes. This, together with the anti-crossing of two singlet bound states in the intermediate field $B=10-16$ T, is discussed in terms of the correlated dynamics of frustrated, interacting bosons.

Substitution effects of Os for Ru in α-RuCl3 are investigated in a wide composition range of 0 =< x =< 0.67 in Ru1-xOsxCl3 by X-ray and electron diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and Raman spectroscopy measurements. Apart from the Kitaev physics with antiferromagnetic interactions increasing with x, a rich phase diagram is obtained, which includes an antiferromagnetic long-range order below 12 K for x =< 0.15, a dome-shaped spin-singlet dimer phase below 130 K for 0.15 =< x =< 0.40, and a magnetic short-range order for x > 0.40. A dimerization as similarly observed in α-RuCl3 under high pressure occurs in the spin-singlet phase. It is suggested that Ru-Os pairs in the solid solutions tend to form dimers with short bonds and trigger the first-order transition in the presence of pseudo-threefold rotational symmetry for dimerization around a substituted Os atom only at low substitutions. This is a rare example of molecular orbital crystallization induced by elemental substitution in a highly disordered system. The short-range order at high substitutions may be related to a random-singlet state stabilized by bond disorder in the honeycomb net.

Fermi surface fluctuations and lattice instabilities in the 2D metallic kagome superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ are elucidated via polarization-resolved Raman spectroscopy. The presence of a weak electronic continuum in high-quality samples marks the cross-over into the charge-density-wave (CDW) ordered phase, while impurity-rich samples promote strong defect-induced electronic scattering processes that affect the coherence of the CDW phase. CDW-induced phonon anomalies appear below $T_{\mathrm{CDW}}$, with emergent $C2$ symmetry for one of the CDW amplitude modes, alluding to nematicity. In conjunction with symmetry-breaking lattice distortions, a kink-like hardening of the A$_{1g}$ phonon energy at $T_{\mathrm{CDW}}$ signifies a concerted interplay of electronic correlations and electron-phonon coupling in the exotic CDW order.

We present an experimental study of the quasi-elastic Raman scattering (QES) of plane-wave and twisted light by liquid crystals. Depending on their temperature, these crystals can exhibit isotropic, nematic and chiral nematic phases. The question is addressed of how the phase of a crystal and the state of incident light can affect the quasi-elastic energy spectra of the scattered radiation, whose shape is usually described by the combination of Lorentzian and Gaussian components. Special attention is paid to the \textit{chiral phase}, for which the Raman QES spectrum is dominated by a Lorentzian with reduced linewidth, pointing to diminished disorder and configurational entropy. Moreover, this phase is also known for a regime of iridescence (selective backscattering) which arises when the wavelength of incident light becomes comparable with the chiral pitch length. Detailed measurements, performed in this \textit{resonant} regime and by employing twisted light, carrying various projections of the orbital angular momentum (OAM), have indicated a low-energy scattering surplus depending on OAM. We argue that this observation might indicate a transfer of angular momentum between light and the liquid crystal.

The $S=1$ Haldane state is constructed from a product of local singlet dimers in the bulk and topological states at the edges of a chain. It is a fundamental representative of topological quantum matter. Its well-known representative, the quasi-one-dimensional SrNi$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ shows both conventional as well as unconventional magnetic Raman scattering. The former is observed as one- and two-triplet excitations with small linewidths and energies corresponding to the Haldane gap $Δ_H$ and the exchange coupling $J_c$ along the chain, respectively. Well-defined magnetic quasiparticles are assumed to be stabilized by interchain interactions and uniaxial single-ion anisotropy. Unconventional scattering exists as broad continua of scattering with an intensity $I(T)$ that shows a mixed bosonic / fermionic statistic. Such a mixed statistic has also been observed in Kitaev spin liquids and could point to a non-Abelian symmetry. As the ground state in the bulk of SrNi$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ is topologically trivial, we suggest its fractionalization to be due to light-induced interchain exchange processes. These processes are supposed to be enhanced due to a proximity to an Ising ordered state with a quantum critical point. A comparison with SrCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$, the $S=1/2$ analogue to our title compound, supports these statements.

OsxCl3 crystallizes in a layered CdCl2-type structure with the triangular lattice partially occupied by Os ions on average. However, on microscopic length scales, the triangular lattice is composed of nano-domains with a honeycomb arrangement of Os ions, as observed by electron microscopy and Raman scattering experiments. Magnetization and heat capacity measurements revealed an absence of magnetic long-range order down to 0.08 K, while a broad peak in heat capacity at 0.15 K may indicate a short-range order in the local honeycomb lattice. OsxCl3 may exhibit certain aspects of the Kitaev spin liquid that are expected for a perfect honeycomb lattice of osmium trichloride.

We compare two crystallographic phases of the low-dimensional WP$_2$ to better understand features of electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions in topological systems. The topological $β$-phase, a Weyl semimetal with a giant magneto-resistance, shows a larger intensity of electronic Raman scattering compared to the topologically trivial $α$-phase. This intensity sharply drops for $T < T^* = 20$ K which evidences a crossover in the topological phase from marginal quasiparticles to a coherent low temperature regime. In contrast, the non-topological $α$-phase shows more pronounced signatures of electron-phonon interaction. Here there exist generally enlarged phonon linewidths and deviations from conventional anharmonicity in an intermediate temperature regime. These effects provide evidence for an interesting interplay of electronic correlations and electron-phonon coupling. Both interband and intraband electronic fluctuations are involved in these effects. Their dependence on symmetry as well as momentum conservation are critical ingredients to understand this interplay.

The pure Kitaev honeycomb model harbors a quantum spin liquid in zero magnetic fields, while applying finite magnetic fields induces a topological spin liquid with non-Abelian anyonic excitations. This latter phase has been much sought after in Kitaev candidate materials, such as $α$-RuCl$_3$. Currently, two competing scenarios exist for the intermediate field phase of this compound ($B=7-10$ T), based on experimental as well as theoretical results: (i) conventional multiparticle magnetic excitations of integer quantum number vs. (ii) Majorana fermionic excitations of possibly non-Abelian nature with a fractional quantum number. To discriminate between these scenarios a detailed investigation of excitations over a wide field-temperature phase diagram is essential. Here we present Raman spectroscopic data revealing low-energy quasiparticles emerging out of a continuum of fractionalized excitations at intermediate fields, which are contrasted by conventional spin-wave excitations. The temperature evolution of these quasiparticles suggests the formation of bound states out of fractionalized excitations.

Fe$^{3+}$ $S = 5/2$ ions form saw-tooth like chains along the $a$ axis of the oxo-selenite Fe$_2$O(SeO$_3$)$_2$ and an onset of long-range magnetic order is observed for temperatures below $T_C = 105$ K. This order leads to distinct fingerprints in phonon mode linewidths and energies as resolved by Raman scattering. In addition, new excitations with small linewidths emerge below $T = 150$ K, and are assigned to two-magnon scattering processes with the participation of flat-band and high energy magnon branches. From this a set of exchange coupling constants is estimated. The specific ratio of the saw-tooth spine-spine and spine-vertex interactions may explain the instability of the dimer quantum ground state against an incommensurate 3D magnetic order.

The Jahn-Teller distortion leads to a structural transition and a related emergence of three twinned monoclinic domains below the structural phase transition. This transition is highly dynamic over an extended temperature range for $A$ = Sr. We have investigated mixed compounds Ba$_{3-x}$Sr$_{x}$Cr$_{2}$O$_{8}$ with $x=2.9$ and $x=2.8$ by means of X-ray and neutron diffraction, Raman scattering and calorimetry. Based on the obtained evolution of the phonon frequencies, we find a distinct suppression of the orbital-lattice fluctuation regime with increasing Ba content. This stands in contrast to the linear behaviour exhibited by unit cell volumes, atomic positions and intradimer spin-spin exchange interactions.

Raman spectroscopy is employed to probe directly the soft rotation and tilting modes, which are two primary order parameters predicted in the hybrid improper ferroelectric material Ca$_3$Mn$_2$O$_7$. We observe a giant softening of the 107-cm$^{-1}$ octahedron tilting mode by 26~cm$^{-1}$, on heating through the structural transition from a ferroelectric to paraelectric orthorhombic phase. This is contrasted by a small softening of the 150-cm$^{-1}$ rotational mode by 6~cm$^{-1}$. In the intermediate phase, the competing soft modes with different symmetries coexist, bringing about many-faceted anomalies in spin excitations and lattice vibrations. Our work demonstrates that the soft rotation and tilt patterns, relying on a phase-transition path, are a key factor in determining ferroelectric, magnetic, and lattice properties of Ca$_3$Mn$_2$O$_7$.

In search of novel, improved materials for magnetic data storage and spintronic devices, compounds that allow a tailoring of magnetic domain shapes and sizes are essential. Good candidates are materials with intrinsic anisotropies or competing interactions, as they are prone to host various domain phases that can be easily and precisely selected by external tuning parameters such as temperature and magnetic field. Here, we utilize vector magnetic fields to visualize directly the magnetic anisotropy in the uniaxial ferromagnet CeRu$_2$Ga$_2$B. We demonstrate a feasible control both globally and locally of domain shapes and sizes by the external field as well as a smooth transition from single stripe to bubble domains, which opens the door to future applications based on magnetic domain tailoring.

In VO$_2$, the explicit origin of the insulator-to-metal transition is still disputable between Peierls and Mott insulators. Along with the controversy, its second monoclinic (M2) phase has received considerable attention due to the presence of electron correlation in undimerized vanadium ions. However, the origin of the M2 phase is still obscure. Here, we study a granular VO$_2$ film using conductive atomic force microscopy and Raman scattering. Upon the structural transition from monoclinic to rutile, we observe directly an intermediate state showing the coexistence of monoclinic M1 and M2 phases. The conductivity near the grain boundary in this regime is six times larger than that of the grain core, producing a donut-like landscape. Our results reveal an intra-grain percolation process, indicating that VO$_2$ with the M2 phase is a Mott insulator.

We report Raman light scattering in the phase separated superconducting single crystal Rb0.77Fe1.61Se2 with Tc = 32 K. The spectra have been measured in a wide temperature range 3K -500K. The observed phonon lines from the majority vacancy ordered Rb2Fe4Se5 (245) antiferromagnetic phase with TN= 525 K demonstrate modest anomalies in frequency, intensity and halfwidth at the superconductive phase transition. We identify phonon lines from the minority compressed RbδFe2Se2 (122) conductive phase. The superconducting gap with dx2-y2 symmetry is also detected in our spectra. In the range 0-600 cm-1 we observed the low intensive but highly polarized B1g-type background which becomes well structured under cooling. The possible magnetic or multiorbital origin of this background has been discussed. We argue that phase separation in M0.8+xFe1.6+ySe2 has pure magnetic origin. It occurs below Neel temperature when iron magnetic moment achieves some critical magnitude. We state that there is a spacer between the majority 245 and minority 122 phases. Using ab-initio spin polarized band structure calculations we demonstrate that compressed vacancy ordered Rb2Fe4Se5 phase can be conductive and therefore may serve as a protective interface spacer between the pure metallic RbδFe2Se2 phase and the insulating Rb2Fe4Se5 phase providing the percolative Josephson-junction like superconductivity in the whole sample of Rb0.8+xFe1.6+ySe2 Our lattice dynamics calculations show significant difference in the phonon spectra of the conductive and insulating Rb2Fe4.Se5 phases.

Fiber optic interferometry as a detection scheme is employed in which two home-built fiber walkers are used for the alignment between the cantilever and the optical fiber. The noise level of the laser interferometer is close to its thermodynamic limit. The capabilities of the sub-Kelvin and vector field are demonstrated by imaging the coexistence of magnetism and superconductivity in a ferromagnetic superconductor (ErNi$_2$B$_2$C) at $T$=500 mK and by probing a dipole shape of a single Abrikosov vortex with an in-plane tip magnetization.

ErNi$_2$B$_2$C is an ideal system to explore the effects of concomitant superconductivity and ferromagnetism. At 500 mK, far below the transition to a weakly ferromagnetic state, we directly observe a structured magnetic background on the micrometer scale. We determine spatially resolved absolute values of the magnetic penetration depth $λ$ and study its temperature dependence as the system undergoes magnetic phase transitions from paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic, and to weak ferromagnetic, all within the superconducting regime. In addition, we estimate the absolute pinning force of Abrikosov vortices, which shows a position- and temperature dependence as well, and discuss the possibility of the purported spontaneous vortex formation.

We report a magnetic force microscopy study of the magnetic domain evolution in the layered manganite La$_{2-2x}$Sr$_{1+2x}$Mn$_2$O$_7$ (with $x=0.32$). This strongly correlated electron compound is known to exhibit a wide range of magnetic phases, including a recently uncovered biskyrmion phase. We observe a continuous transition from dendritic to stripe-like domains, followed by the formation of magnetic bubbles due to a field- and temperature dependent competition between in-plane and out-of-plane spin alignments. The magnetic bubble phase appears at comparable field- and temperature ranges as the biskyrmion phase, suggesting a close relation between both phases. Based on our real-space images we construct a temperature-field phase diagram for this composition.

We present an investigation of charge-compensated antiferromagnetic (Ca$_{x}$La$_{1-x}$)(Ba$_{1.75-x}$La$_{0.25+x}$)Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$ single crystals using Raman scattering as well as muon spin rotation. In this system the parameter $x$ controls the Cu-O-Cu superexchange interaction via bond distances and buckling angles. The oxygen content $y$ controls the charge do**. In the absence of do** the two-magnon peak position is directly proportional to the superexchange strength $J$. We find that both $x$ and $y$ affect the peak position considerably. The Néel temperature determined from muon spin rotation on the same samples independently confirms the strong dependence of the magnetic interaction on $x$ and $y$. We find a considerable increase in the maximum superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}^{max}$ with $J$. This is strong evidence of the importance of orbital overlap to superconductivity in this family of cuprates.

We observe an unusual lattice dynamics over a large temperature regime as well as evidence for an orbital instability preceding the spin-Peierls transition. We relate different intrachain exchange interactions of the high temperature compared to the spin-Peierls phase to a modification of the orbital ordering pattern. In particular, our observation of a high energy excitation of mixed electronic and lattice origin suggests an exotic dimerization process different from other spin-Peierls materials.

A comparison with the topological insulator Bi2Se3 evidences that surface confined quantum well states are the origin of these processes. We notice an enhanced quasiparticle dynamics of these states with scattering rates that are comparable to polaronic systems in the collision dominated regime. In the spin ladder compound BiCu$_2$PO$_6$ there exists a decisive dynamics of spin excitations that we classify and characterize using inelastic light scattering. We observe low-energy singlets and a broad triplon continuum extending from 36 cm$^{-1}$ to 700 cm$^{-1}$ in ($aa$), ($bb$), and ($cc$) light scattering polarizations. Though isolated spin ladder physics can roughly account for the observed excitations at high energies, frustration and interladder interactions need to be considered to fully describe the spectral distribution and scattering selection rules at low and intermediate energies. More significantly, an interladder singlet bound mode at 24 cm$^{-1}$, lying below the continuum, shows its largest scattering intensity in interladder ($ab$) polarization. In contrast, two intraladder bound states at 62 cm$^{-1}$ and 108 cm$^{-1}$ with energies comparable to the continuum are observed with light polarization along the leg ($bb$) and the rung ($cc$). We attribute the rich spectrum of singlet bound modes to a melting of a dimer crystal. Our study provides evidence for a Z$_2$ quantum phase transition from a dimer to a resonating valence bond state driven by singlet fluctuations.

Polarized Raman-scattering spectra of superconducting, single-crystalline FeSe evidence pronounced phonon anomalies with temperature reduction. A large 6.5% hardening of the B_1g(Fe) phonon mode is attributed to the suppression of local fluctuations of the iron spin state with the gradual decrease of the iron paramagnetic moment. The ab-initio lattice dynamic calculations support this conclusion. The enhancement of the low-frequency spectral weight above the structural phase transition temperature T_s and its change below T_s is discussed in relation with the opening of an energy gap between low (S=0) and higher spin states which prevents magnetic order in FeSe. The very narrow phonon line widths compared to observations in FeTe suggests the absence of intermediate spin states in the fluctuating spin state manifold in FeSe.

The spin dynamics and magnetic excitations of the slightly distorted triangular s = 3/2 system alpha-CaCr2O4 are investigated by means of Raman spectroscopy and electron spin resonance (ESR) to elucidate its peculiar magnetic properties. Two-magnon excitations in circular RL symmetry show a multi-maximum structure with a dominant spectral weight at low energies. The temperature dependence of the ESR linewidth is described by a critical broadening DeltaHpp(T) ~ (T - T_N)^{-p} with the exponent p = 0.30(3) - 0.38(5) for temperatures above T_N = 42.6 K. The exponent is much smaller than that of other s = 3/2 triangular lattices. This is ascribed to soft roton-like modes, indicative of the instability of a helical 120° phase. As an origin we discuss a complex spin topology formed by four inequivalent nearest neighbor and sizable next-nearest neighbor interactions.

Such a system shows unbound spinon excitations and a resonating valence bond ground state due spin frustration. Our Raman scattering study demonstrates phonon anomalies as well as the suppression of a broad magnetic scattering continuum for temperatures below a characteristic temperature, T<T*=100K. We interpret these effects as evidence for a dynamical interplay of spin and lattice degrees of freedom that might lead to a further transition into a dimerized or structurally distorted phase at lower temperatures.

Strong spin-orbit interaction in the two dimensional compound Sr2IrO4 leads to the formation of Jeff=1/2 isospins with unprecedented dynamics. In Raman scattering a continuum attributed to double spin scattering is observed. With higher excitation energy of the incident Laser this signal crosses over to an incoherent background. The characteristic energy scale of this cross over is identical to that of intensity resonance effects in phonon scattering. It is related to exciton-like orbital excitations that are also evident in resonant X-Ray scattering. The crossover and evolution of incoherent excitations are proposed to be due to their coupling to spin excitations. This signals a spin-orbit induced entanglement of spin, lattice and charge degrees of freedoms in Sr2IrO4.

We present evidence for a concomitant structural and ferroelectric transformation around $T_S\sim 360$ K in multiferroic BiFeO$_3$/LaAlO$_3$ thin films close to the tetragonal phase. Phonon excitations are investigated by using Raman scattering as a function of temperature. The low-energy phonon modes at 180-260 cm$^{-1}$ related to the FeO$_6$ octahedron tilting show anomalous behaviors upon cooling through $T_S$; (i) a large hardening amounting to 15 cm$^{-1}$, (ii) an increase of intensity by one order of magnitude, and (iii) an appearance of a dozen new modes. In contrast, the high-frequency modes exhibit only weak anomalies. This suggests an intimate coupling of octahedron tilting to ferroelectricity leading to a simultaneous change of structural and ferroelectric properties.

We report on an extended fluctuation regime in the spin dimer system Sr3Cr2O8 based on anomalies in Raman active phonons and magnetic scattering. The compound has two characteristic temperatures, TS = 275 K, related to a Jahn-Teller transition with structural distortions and orbital ordering and a second, T*= 150 K, which is due to further changes in the orbital sector. Below TS quasielastic scattering marks strong fluctuations and in addition phonon anomalies are observed. For temperatures below T* we observe an exponential decrease of one phonon linewidth and determine a gap of the orbital excitations. At low temperatures the observation of two- and three-magnon scattering allows the determination of the spin excitation gap.

We present a Raman spectroscopic investigation of the Herbertsmithite ZnCu3(OH)6Cl2, the first realization of a Heisenberg s=1/2 antiferromagnet on a perfect kagome lattice. The magnetic excitation spectrum of this compound is dominated by two components, a high temperature quasi elastic signal and a low temperature, broad maximum. The latter has a linear low energy slope and extends to high energ…

The latter has a linear low energy slope and extends to high energy. We have investigated the temperature dependence and symmetry properties of both signals. Our data agree with previous calculations and point to a spin liquid ground state.

Abstract:
In the orbitally ordered, quasi-one dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet KCuF3 the low-energy Eg and B1g phonon modes show an anomalous softening (25% and 13%) between room temperature and the characteristic temperature T_S = 50 K. In this temperature range a freezing-in of F ion dynamic displacements is proposed to occur. In addition, the Eg mode at about 260 cm-1 clearly splits below T_S. The…

The width of the phonon lines above T_S follows an activated behavior with an activation energy of about 50 K. Our observations clearly evidence a reduction of the structural symmetry below T_S and indicate a strong coupling of lattice and spin fluctuations for T>T_S.

We report on infrared, Raman, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements on CdCr2O4 and ZnCr2O4 single crystals. We estimate the nearest-neighbor and next-nearest neighbor exchange constants from the magnetic susceptibility and extract the spin-spin correlation functions obtained from the magnetic susceptibility and the magnetic contribution to the specific heat. By comparing with the frequency shift of the infrared optical phonons above TN , we derive estimates for the spin-phonon coupling constants in these systems. The observation of phonon modes which are both Raman and infrared active suggest the loss of inversion symmetry below the Neel temperature in CdCr2O4 in agreement with theoretical predictions by Chern and coworkers [Phys. Rev. B 74, 060405 (2006)]. In ZnCr2O4 several new modes appear below TN, but no phonon modes could be detected which are both Raman and infrared active indicating the conservation of inversion symmetry in the low temperature phase.

Motivated by the observation of a strongly fluctuating precursor state at high temperatures and orbital ordering and a charge gap at low temperatures we suggest a concerted action of the orbital, electronic, and lattice subsystems dominated by electronic correlations.

Abstract:
We report inelastic light scattering experiments on CaFe_2As_2 in the temperature range of 4 to 290 K. In in-plane polarizations two Raman-active phonon modes are observed at 189 and 211 cm-1, displaying A_1g and B_1g symmetries, respectively. Upon heating through the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic transition at about T_S=173 K, the B_1g phonon undergoes a discontinuous drop of the frequency by 4 cm…

In in-plane polarizations two Raman-active phonon modes are observed at 189 and 211 cm-1, displaying A_1g and B_1g symmetries, respectively. Upon heating through the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic transition at about T_S=173 K, the B_1g phonon undergoes a discontinuous drop of the frequency by 4 cm-1 whereas the A_1g phonon shows a suppression of the integrated intensity. Their linewidth increases strongly with increasing temperature and saturates above T_S. This suggests (i) a first-order structural phase transition and (ii) a drastic change of charge distribution within the FeAs plane through T_S.
