In metal-organic-framework (MOF) perovskites, both magnetic and ferroelectric orderings can be readily realized by compounding spin and charge degrees of freedom. The hydrogen bonds that bridge the magnetic framework and organic molecules have long been thought of as a key in generating multiferroic properties. However, the underlying physical mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we combine neutron diffraction, quasielastic and inelastic neutron scattering, and THz spectroscopy techniques to thoroughly investigate the dynamical properties of the multiferroic MOF candidate [CH$_3$NH$_3$][Co(HCOO)$_3$] through its multiple phase transitions. The wide range of energy resolutions reachable by these techniques enables us to scrutinize the coupling between the molecules and the framework throughout the phase transitions and interrogate a possible magnetoelectric coupling. Our results also reveal a structural change around 220 K which may be associated with the activation of a nodding donkey mode of the methylammonium molecule due to the ordering of the CH$_3$ groups. Upon the occurrence of the modulated phase transition around 130 K, the methylammonium molecules undergo a freezing of its reorientational motions which is concomitant with a change of the lattice parameters and anomalies of collective lattice vibrations. No significant change has been however observed in the lattice dynamics around the magnetic ordering, which therefore indicates the absence of a substantial magneto-electric coupling in zero-field.

We present a high-pressure investigation of the semiconductor-to-metal transition in MoS2 and WS2 carried out by synchrotron-based far-infrared spectroscopy, to reconcile the controversial estimates of the metallization pressure found in the literature and gain new insight into the mechanisms ruling this electronic transition. Two spectral descriptors are found indicative of the onset of metallicity and of the origin of the free carriers in the metallic state: the absorbance spectral weight, whose abrupt increase defines the metallization pressure threshold, and the asymmetric lineshape of the E1u peak, whose pressure evolution, interpreted within the Fano model, suggests the electrons in the metallic state originate from n-type do** levels. Combining our results with those reported in the literature, we hypothesize a two-step mechanism is at work in the metallization process, in which the pressure-induced hybridization between do** and conduction band states drives an early metallic behaviour, while the band-gap closes at higher pressures.

By means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction we have revealed the breaking of centrosymmetry when lowering the temperature under T$_s$ = 200 K concomitantly with the setting of a commensurate superstructure in the small A-site quadruple perovskite YMn$_3$Mn$_4$O$_{12}$. This results is in agreement with all data already reported for this compounds and solve the previous inconsistency about the Yttrium position. The superstructure is characterized by the appearing of satellite reflections in the single crystal pattern, consistent with an I-centered pseudo-orthorhombic commensurate supercell with $a \approx \sqrt{a_F} = 10.4352(7)$ Å, $b \approx 2b_F = 14.6049(9)$ Å, $c \approx \sqrt{c_F} = 10.6961(7)$ Åand $β= 90.110(3)^\circ$, where F stands for the "fundamental" high-temperature cell ($a_F \approx c_F \approx 7.45$ Å, $b_F \approx 7.34$ Å, and $β\approx 90^\circ$). The space-group was unequivocally found to be Ia, which is non polar, thus allowing for a non-zero polarization in the material. We then have investigated in detail the pyrocurrent, transport, dielectric and the DC and AC magnetic properties of polycrystalline sample of YMn$_3$Mn$_4$O$_{12}$ over a wide temperature range. These measurements clearly highlight several critical temperatures in the material and correlation between the different orders: i) the centrosymmetry is broken at high temperature (T$_S$ = 200K), ii) then the long-range magnetic order of B-sites occurs at T$_{N,B}$ = 108 K and at this same temperature the compound enters in an insulating dielectric state. iii) Finally, a remnant polarization is stabilized concomitantly with a magnetic anomaly at T* = 70 K. We propose that YMn$_3$Mn$_4$O$_{12}$ is a peculiar magnetic ferroelectric in which the polar state is driven by short-range magnetic order.

The intensive search for alternative non-cuprate high-transition-temperature ($T_c$) superconductors has taken a positive turn recently with the discovery of superconductivity in infinite layer nickelates. This discovery is expected to be the basis for disentangling the puzzle behind the physics of high $T_c$ in oxides. In the unsolved quest for the physical conditions necessary for inducing superconductivity, we report an optical study of a Nd$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$NiO$_2$ film measured using optical spectroscopy, at temperatures above and below the critical temperature $T_c\sim 13$ K. The normal-state electrodynamics of Nd$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$NiO$_2$, is described by the Drude model characterized by a scattering time just above $T_c$ ($τ\sim 1.7\times 10^{-14}$ s) and a plasma frequency $ω_p = 8500$ cm$^{-1}$ in combination with an absorption band in the Mid-Infrared (MIR) around $ω_0 \sim 4000$ cm$^{-1}$. The MIR absorption indicates the presence of strong electronic correlation effect in the NiO$_2$ plane similarly to cuprates. Below $T_c$, a superconducting energy gap ($2Δ$) of $\sim 3.2$ meV is extracted from the Terahertz reflectivity using the the Mattis-Bardeen model. From the Ferrel-Glover-Thinkam Rule applied to the real part of the optical conductivity, we also estimate a London penetration depth of about 490 nm, in agreement with a type-II superconductivity in Nd$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$NiO$_2$ Nickelate.

This paper presents a study of the structure dynamics in BaFe$_2$Se$_3$. We combined first-principle calculations, infrared measurements and a thorough symmetry analysis. Our study confirms that $Pnma$ cannot be the space group of BaFe$_2$Se$_3$, even at room temperature. The phonons assignment requires $Pm$ to be the BaFe$_2$Se$_3$ space group, not only in the magnetic phase, but also in the paramagnetic phase at room temperature. This is due to a strong coupling between a short range spin-order along the ladders, and the lattice degrees of freedom associated with the Fe-Fe bond length. This coupling induces a change in the bond-length pattern from an alternated trapezoidal one (as in $Pnma$) to an alternated small/large rectangular one. Out of the two patterns, only the latter is fully compatible with the observed block-type magnetic structure. Finally, we propose a complete symmetry analysis of the BaFe$_2$Se$_3$ phase diagram in the 0-600\,K range.

At $T_{\rm CO}$, the IXS spectra unveil a softening of a 35.3 meV phonon at ${\bf q}_{\rm CO}$. Lattice dynamical calculations enable us to attribute this soft phonon to a A$_g$ mode whose polarization matches the Jahn-Teller-like distortion pattern of the structural modulation. This result demonstrates that the Jahn-Teller instability is the driving force of the CO Verwey transition in (NaMn$_3$)Mn$_4$O$_{12}$, thus elucidating a long-standing controversy regarding the mechanism of this transition observed in other mixed-valence systems like magnetite.

High pressure is a proven effective tool for modulating inter-layer interactions in semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides, which leads to significant band structure changes. Here, we present an extended infrared study of the pressure-induced semiconductor-to-metal transition in 2H-MoTe2, which reveals that the metallization process at 13-15 GPa is not associated with the indirect band gap closure, occuring at 24 GPa. A coherent picture is drawn where n-type do** levels just below the conduction band minimum play a crucial role in the early metallization transition. Do** levels are also responsible for the asymmetric Fano line-shape of the E1u infrared-active mode, which has been here detected and analyzed for the first time in a Transition Metal Dichalcogenide compound. The pressure evolution of the phonon profile under pressure shows a symmetrization in the 13-15 GPa pressure range, which occurs simultaneously with the metallization and confirms the scenario proposed for the high pressure behaviour of 2H-MoTe2.

Magnetic and crystallographic transitions in the Cairo pentagonal magnet Bi2Fe4O9 are investigated by means of infrared synchrotron-based spectroscopy as a function of temperature (20 - 300 K) and pressure (0 - 15.5 GPa). One of the phonon modes is shown to exhibit an anomalous softening as a function of temperature in the antiferromagnetic phase below 240 K, highlighting spin-lattice coupling. Moreover, under applied pressure at 40 K, an even larger softening is observed through the pressure induced structural transition. Lattice dynamical calculations reveal that this mode is indeed very peculiar as it involves a minimal bending of the strongest superexchange path in the pentagonal planes, as well as a decrease of the distances between second neighbor irons. The latter confirms the hypothesis made by Friedrich et al.,1 about an increase in the oxygen coordination of irons being at the origin of the pressure-induced structural transition. As a consequence, one expects a new magnetic superexchange path that may alter the magnetic structure under pressure.

X-ray diffraction measurements indicates an anomalous behavior of the monoclinic $β$ angle at $T_{N,B}$, which suggests that $P$ lies in the $ac$-plane, where the moments are collinear, so we conclude that exchange striction is the mechanism of spin-driven ferroelectricity. Polarization values $\sim$3 $μ$C cm$^{-2}$ are expected in single crystals, which would open the avenue towards practical multiferroic applications.

By means of Shubnikov-de-Haas and de-Haas-van-Alphen oscillations, and ab initio calculations, we have studied the Fermi surface of high-quality BaNiS$_2$ single crystals, with mean free path $l \sim 400 ~\textÅ$. The angle and temperature dependence of quantum oscillations indicates a quasi-two-dimensional Fermi surface, made of an electron-like tube centred at $Γ$, and of 4 hole-like cones, generated by Dirac bands, weakly dispersive in the out-of-plane direction. Ab initio electronic structure calculations, in the density functional theory framework, show that the inclusion of screened exchange is necessary to account for the experimental Fermi pockets. Therefore, the choice of the functional becomes crucial. A modified HSE hybrid functional with 7% of exact exchange outperforms both GGA and GGA+U density functionals, signalling the importance of non-local screened-exchange interactions in BaNiS$_2$, and, more generally, in $3d$ compensated semimetals.

We report on a systematic study of the thermodynamic, electronic and charge transport properties of high-quality single crystals of BaNiS$_2$, the metallic end-member of the quasi-twodimensional BaCo$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$S$_2$ system characterized by a metal-insulator transition at $x_{cr}=0.22$. Our analysis of magnetoresistivity and specific heat data consistently suggests a picture of compensated semimetal with two hole- and one electron-bands, where electron-phonon scattering dominates charge transport and the minority holes exhibit, below $\sim$100 K, a very large mobility, $μ_h\sim$ 15000 cm$^2$V$^{-1}$s$^{-1}$, which is explained by a Dirac-like band. Evidence of unconventional metallic properties is given by an intriguing crossover of the resistivity from a Bloch-Grüneisen regime to a linear$-T$ regime occurring at 2 K and by a strong linear term in the paramagnetic susceptibility above 100 K. We discuss the possibility that these anomalies reflect a departure from conventional Fermi-liquid properties in presence of short-range AF fluctuations and of a large Hund coupling.
