Effect of atomic disordering induced by irradiation with fast neutrons on the properties of the normal and superconducting states of polycrystalline samples FeSe has been studied. The irradiation with fast neutrons of fluencies up to 1.25\cdot10^20 cm^-2 at the irradiation temperature Tirr ~ 50 \degree C results in relatively small changes in the temperature of the superconducting transition T_c and electrical resistivity Rho_25. Such a behavior is considered to be traceable to rather low, with respect to that possible at a given irradiation temperature, concentration of radiation defects, which is caused by a simpler crystal structure, considered to other layered compounds.

In ferromagnetic alloys with shape memory large reversible strains can be obtained by rearranging the martensitic domain structure by a magnetic field. Magnetization through displacement of domain walls is possible in the presence of high magnetocrystalline anisotropy, when martensitic structure rearrangement is energetically favorable compared to the reorientation of magnetic moments. In ferromagnetic Heusler alloys Ni$_{2+x}$Mn$_{1-x}$Ga the Curie temperature exceeds the martensitic transformation temperature. The fact that these two temperatures are close to room temperature offers the possibility of magnetically controlling the shape and size of ferromagnets in the martensitic state. In Ni$_{2+x}$Mn$_{1-x}$Ga single crystals, a reversible strain of $\sim 6$% is obtained in fields of $\sim 1$ T.

The complex lanthanide do** of electron manganites results in enhancement of various phase separation effects in physical properties of these compounds. Selecting Ca0.8Sm0.16Nd0.04MnO3 as a model case we show that the first order structural phase transition from paramagnetic semi-metallic phase into anti-ferromagnetic semi-metallic phase at TS ~ 158 +- 4 K is marked by an abrupt decrease in magnetization, a step like anomaly DL/L = 10-4 in thermal expansion and large latent heat DQ = 610 J/mol. In a certain temperature range below TS, the high field magnetization exhibits hysteretic metamagnetic behavior due to field-induced first order transformation. ac-susceptibility, magnetization and resistivity data suggest rather a non-uniform state in Ca0.8Sm0.16Nd0.04MnO3 at low temperatures. The metal - insulator transition occurs at TMI ~112 +- 3 K, accompanied by a step-like increase in magnetization. These features could be ascribed to "sponging" of electrons from neighboring anti-ferromagnetic matrix by clusters undergoing the ferromagnetic ordering.

The spontaneous magnetization of $3.4\times 10^{-3}$ $μ_B$ per V$^{4+}$ ion was found to be oriented along the two-fold $b$ axis of the monoclinic structure, the vector of antiferromagnetism is aligned with the $a$ axis and the Dzyaloshinsky vector is parallel to the $c$-axis. The experimental data were successfully described in the frame of the macroscopic spin dynamics and the following values for the macroscopic parameters of the spin system were obtained: the Dzyaloshinsky field $H_D=6$ kOe, the energy gaps of two branches of the spin wave spectrum $Δ_1=48$ GHz and $Δ_2=24$ GHz.

The phonon dynamics of LiV2O5 single crystals is studied using infrared and Raman spectroscopy techniques. The infrared-active phonon frequencies and dielectric constants are obtained by oscillator fitting procedure of the reflectivity data measured at room temperature. The Raman scattering spectra are measured at room temperature and at T=10 K in all nonequivalent polarized configurations. The assignment of the phonons is done by comparing the infrared and Raman spectra of LiV2O5 and NaV2O5. The factor-group-analysis of the LiV2O5 crystal symmetry and of its constituent layers is performed to explain the symmetry properties of the observed modes. We concluded that layer symmetry dominates in the vibrational properties of this compound.

These data were analyzed together with literature data concerning specific heat, magnetic losses and ultrasonic velocity. We found that all results support the idea about universality of the critical laws at the transition in NaV2O5 where different physical quantities demonstrate identical shape of the anomaly. Considerable deviations from the standard theory of the second order transition including asymmetry of the critical behavior above and below transition and appearance of the anomalous background are detected.

In order to investigate the origin of the phase transition observed in NaV$_2$O$_5$, as well as its electronic structure, we have measured Raman intensities as a function of the laser wavelength above and below the phase transition temperature. In the polarized Raman spectra at room temperature we observe resonant enhancement of the 969 $cm^{-1}$ phonon mode when the laser energy approaches 2.7 eV, presumably related to the (p-d) electron hop** band, $O_3$($p_y$)-V($d_{xy}$), at 3.2 eV. The 969 $cm^{-1}$ mode originates from the stretching vibrations along the c-axis involving the V-$O_1$ bonds. Since an ellipsometric determination of the dielectric function $ε_{cc}$ yields no structure in the 1.7 to 5.5 eV photon energy range, we conclude that plane bonds couple strongly with the apical oxygens leading to a large Raman efficiency. In the low-temperature Raman spectra, almost all modes that become active below the phase transition temperature T$_c$=34 K show resonant behavior. The most interesting ones, those at 66 and 106 $cm^{-1}$, possibly of magnetic origin, exhibit a resonant intensity enhancement, approximately by an order of magnitude, for laser photon energies around 1.85 eV with respect to 2.43 eV. This resonance effect may be associated with a weak absorption band around 2 eV. Finally, a destructive interference between the resonant and the nonresonant contribution to the Raman scattering amplitude (i.e. an antiresonance) is found in the spectra for most of the (bb) low-temperature modes.

In the low temperature phase the V$^{4+}$ ions are forming a "zig-zag" ladder structure along the {\bf b}-axis, consistent with the symmetry of the P2/b space group.

We found anomalies in the temperature dependence of the dielectric and the magnetic susceptibiliy of NaV_2O_5 in the microwave and far infrared frequency ranges. The anomalies occur at the phase transition temperature T_c, at which the spin gap opens. The real parts of the dielectric constants epsilon_a and epsilon_c decrease below T_c. The decrease of epsilon_a (except for the narrow region close to T_c) is proportional to the intensity of the x-ray reflection appearing at T_c. The dielectric constant anomaly can be explained by the zigzag charge ordering in the ab-plane appearing below T_c. The anomaly of the microwave magnetic losses is probably related to the coupling between the spin and charge degrees of freedom in vanadium ladders.

This anomaly decreases and gradually disappears with deviation from stoichiometry in Na(1-x}V2O5 (x = 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, and 0.04). This behavior is compared with that of pure and Zn-doped CuGeO3 where only modest kinks in the k(T) curves are observed at the spin-Peierls transition. The change of k at critical temperature Tc could be partially attributed to the opening of an energy gap in the magnetic excitation spectrum excluding the scattering of thermal phonons on spin fluctuations. However, the reason for such a strong anomaly in the k(T) may lie not only in the different energy scales of CuGeO3 and NaV2O5, but also in the different character of the phase transition in NaV2O5 which can have largely a structural origin, e.g. connected with the charge ordering.

Field theoretical renormalization group methods are applied to the Obukhov--Kraichnan model of a passive scalar advected by the Gaussian velocity field with the covariance $<{\bf v}(t,{\bf x}){\bf v}(t',{\bf x})> - < v(t,{\bf x}){\bf v}(t',x')> \proptoδ(t-t')| x-x'|^{\eps}$. Inertial range anomalous scaling for the structure functions and various pair correlators is established as a consequence of the existence in the corresponding operator product expansions of ``dangerous'' composite operators [powers of the local dissipation rate], whose negative critical dimensions determine anomalous exponents. The main technical result is the calculation of the anomalous exponents in the order $\eps^{2}$ of the $\eps$ expansion. Generalization of the results obtained to the case of a ``slow'' velocity field is also presented.

The absorption band at 10000 cm-1 1.25 eV is attributed to vanadium d-d electronic transitions while the absorption edge above 3 eV is supposed to correspond to the onset of charge-transfer transitions.
