The prototypical antiferroelectric perovskite $\rm PbZrO_3$ (PZO) has garnered considerable attentions in recent years due to its significance in technological applications and fundamental research. Many unresolved issues in PZO are associated with large spatial and time scales, as well as finite temperatures, presenting significant challenges for first-principles density functional theory studies. Here, we introduce a deep learning interatomic potential of PZO, enabling investigation of finite-temperature properties through large-scale atomistic simulations. Trained using an elaborately designed dataset, the model successfully reproduces a large number of phases, in particular, the recently discovered 80-atom antiferroelectric $Pnam$ phase and ferrielectric $Ima2$ phase, providing precise predictions for their structural and dynamical properties. Using this model, we investigated phase transitions of multiple phases, including $Pbam$/$Pnam$, $Ima2$ and $R3c$, which show high similarity to the experimental observation. Our simulation results also highlight the crucial role of free-energy in determining the low-temperature phase of PZO, reconciling the apparent contradiction: $Pbam$ is the most commonly observed phase in experiments, while theoretical calculations predict other phases exhibiting even lower energy. Furthermore, in the temperature range where the $Pbam$ phase is thermodynamically stable, typical double polarization hysteresis loops for antiferroelectrics were obtained, along with a detailed elucidation of the dynamical evolution upon electric-field induced transitions between the non-polar $Pbam$ and polar $R3c$ phases.

The coupled, time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii and Ginzburg-Landau equations are solved simultaneously in three dimensions to investigate the equilibrium state and far-from-equilibrium, spin-down dynamics of an interpenetrating neutron superfluid and proton type-II superconductor, as an idealized description of the outer core of a neutron star. The simulations generalize previous calculations without the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation, where proton feedback is absent. If the angle $θ$ between the rotation and magnetic axes does not equal zero, the equilibrium state consists of geometrically complicated neutron vortex and proton flux-tube tangles, as the topological defects pin to one another locally but align with different axes globally. During spin-down, new types of motion are observed. For $θ= 0$, entire vortices pair rectilinearly with flux tubes and move together while pinned. For $θ\neq 0$, vortex segments pair with segments from one or more flux tubes, and the paired segments move together while pinned. The degree to which proton feedback impedes the deceleration of the crust is evaluated as a function of $θ$ and the pinning strength, $η$. Key geometric properties of vortex-flux-tube tangles, such as filament length, mean curvature, and polarity are analysed. It is found that proton feedback smooths the deceleration of the crust, reduces the rotational glitch sizes, and stabilizes the vortex tangle dynamics. The dimensionless control parameters in the simulations are mutually ordered to match what is expected in a real neutron star, but their central values and dynamics ranges differ from reality by many orders of magnitude due to computational limitations.

Ferroelectric perovskites have been ubiquitously applied in piezoelectric devices for decades, among which, eco-friendly lead-free (K,Na)NbO3-based materials have been recently demonstrated to be an excellent candidate for sustainable development. Molecular dynamics is a versatile theoretical calculation approach for the investigation of the dynamical properties of ferroelectric perovskites. However, molecular dynamics simulation of ferroelectric perovskites has been limited to simple systems, since the conventional construction of interatomic potential is rather difficult and inefficient. In the present study, we construct a machine-learning interatomic potential of KNbO3 (as a representative system of (K,Na)NbO3) by using a deep neural network model. Including first-principles calculation data into the training dataset ensures the quantum-mechanics accuracy of the interatomic potential. The molecular dynamics based on machine-learning interatomic potential shows good agreement with the first-principles calculations, which can accurately predict multiple fundamental properties, e.g., atomic force, energy, elastic properties, and phonon dispersion. In addition, the interatomic potential exhibits satisfactory performance in the simulation of domain wall and temperature-dependent phase transition. The construction of interatomic potential based on machine learning could potentially be transferred to other ferroelectric perovskites and consequently benefits the theoretical study of ferroelectrics.

Based on the multiband semiconductor Bloch equations a microscopic approach to high-harmonic generation in crystalline solids which is able to properly describe degenerate bands and band crossings is presented and analyzed. It is well-known that numerical band structure calculations typically provide electronic wave functions with an undetermined k-dependent phase which results in matrix elements which contain arbitrary k-dependent phases. In addition, such approaches usually mix degenerate bands and bands with an energy difference smaller than the numerical precision in an arbitrary way for each point in k-space. These ambiguities are problematic if one considers the dynamics induced by electric fields since the matrix elements of the position operator involve a derivative of the wave functions with respect to k. When the light-matter interaction is described in the length gauge, the problem of arbitrary phases and degenerate subspace mixing of Bloch states is solved by adopting a smooth gauge transformation along the field direction. The results obtained within this method are validated by comparing with calculations in the velocity gauge. Although we obtain in both gauges the same overall result, the length gauge is advantageous since it converges with a smaller number of bands and thus requires significantly less numerical effort than the velocity gauge. Also an unique distinction between inter- and intraband contributions and thus an instructive physical interpretation is possible in the length gauge whereas in the velocity gauge this is unclear. The computed polarization-direction-dependent high-harmonic spectra agree well with experimental data reported for GaAs. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that, under proper conditions, the Berry curvature is largely responsible for the even-order harmonics which are polarized perpendicular to the driving field.
