The topology between Bloch states in reciprocal space has attracted tremendous attention in recent years. The quantum geometry of the band structure is composed of quantum metric as real part and berry curvature as imaginary part. While the Berry curvature, the Berry curvature dipole and Berry connection polarizability have been recently revealed by the first order anomalous hall, second order and third order nonlinear Hall effect respectively, the quantum metric induced second order nonlinear transverse and longitudinal response in topological antiferromagnetic material MnBi2Te4 was only very recently reported. Here we demonstrate the similar third order nonlinear transport properties in the topological antiferromagnetic CoNb3S6. We observed that the third order nonlinear longitudinal V3ω xx increase significantly at the antiferromagnetic transition temperature TN ~ 29 K, which was probably induced by the quantum metric without time-reversal symmetry or inversion symmetry. Besides, temperature-dependent nonlinear behaviour was observed in the first order I-V curve below the Neel temperature TN, which was not reported in MnBi2Te4 and FeSn. Such nonlinear I-V behaviour hints for the possible existence of Charge Density Wave (CDW) state, which has been discovered in its sister material FeNb3S6. Simultaneously, two plateaus in the third order nonlinear longitudinal V3ω xx~ I^ω curve are observed, which is also speculated to be related with the possible CDW state. However, the genuine mechanism for the first order nonlinear I-V and its relation with the third order nonlinear transport call for more experimental investigations and theoretical interpretation. Our work provides a way to explore third harmonic nonlinear transport and interaction with magnetic order and CDW.

Unconventional superconductivity (USC) in a highly correlated kagome system has been theoretically proposed for years, yet the experimental realization is hard to achieve. The recently discovered vanadium-based kagome materials, which exhibit both superconductivity and charge density wave (CDW) orders, are nonmagnetic and weakly correlated, thus unlikely host USC as theories proposed. Here we report the discovery of a chromium-based kagome metal, CsCr$_3$Sb$_5$, which is contrastingly characterised by strong electron correlations, frustrated magnetism, and characteristic flat bands close to the Fermi level. Under ambient pressure, it undergoes a concurrent structural and magnetic phase transition at 55 K, accompanying with a stripe-like $4a_0$ structural modulation. At high pressure, the phase transition evolves into two transitions, probably associated with CDW and antiferromagnetic spin-density-wave orderings, respectively. These density-wave (DW)-like orders are gradually suppressed with pressure and, remarkably, a superconducting dome emerges at 3.65-8.0 GPa. The maximum of the superconducting transition temperature, $T_\mathrm{c}^{\mathrm{max}}=$ 6.4 K, appears when the DW-like orders are completely suppressed at 4.2 GPa, and the normal state exhibits a non-Fermi-liquid behaviour, reminiscent of USC and quantum criticality in iron-based superconductors. Our work offers an unprecedented platform for investigating possible USC in a correlated kagome system.

Recently, charge density wave (CDW) has been observed well below the order of antiferromagnetism (AFM) in kagome FeGe in which magnetism and CDW are intertwined to form an emergent quantum ground state. The mechanism of CDW precipitating from an A-type AFM of Fe kagome sublattice is intensively debated. The structural distortion originating from the CDW has yet to be accurately determined in FeGe. Here we resolved the structure model of the CDW in annealed FeGe crystals through single crystal x-ray diffraction via a synchrotron radiation source. The annealed crystals exhibit strong CDW transition signals exemplified by sharp magnetic susceptibility drop and specific heat jump, as well as intense superlattice reflections from 2 $\times$ 2 $\times$ 2 CDW order. Occupational disorder of Ge atoms resulting from short-range CDW correlations above $T_\mathrm{CDW}$ has also been identified from the structure refinements. The dimerization of Ge atoms along c axis has been demonstrated to be the dominant distortion for CDW. The Fe kagome and Ge honeycomb sublattices only undergo subtle distortions. Occupational disorder of Ge atoms is also proved to exist in the CDW phase due to the random selection of partial Ge sites to be dimerized to realize the structural distortion. Our work paves the way to understanding the unconventional nature of CDW in FeGe not only by solving the structural distortion below $T_\mathrm{CDW}$ and identifying fluctuations above it but also by rationalizing the synthesis of high-quality crystals for in-depth investigations in the future.

Data-driven (DD) interatomic potentials (IPs) trained on large collections of first principles calculations are rapidly becoming essential tools in the fields of computational materials science and chemistry for performing atomic-scale simulations. Despite this, apart from a few notable exceptions, there is a distinct lack of well-organized, public datasets in common formats available for use with IP development. This deficiency precludes the research community from implementing widespread benchmarking, which is essential for gaining insight into model performance and transferability, and also limits the development of more general, or even universal, IPs. To address this issue, we introduce the ColabFit Exchange, the first database providing open access to a large collection of systematically organized datasets from multiple domains that is especially designed for IP development. The ColabFit Exchange is publicly available at \url{https://colabfit.org/}, providing a web-based interface for exploring, downloading, and contributing datasets. Composed of data collected from the literature or provided by community researchers, the ColabFit Exchange currently (September 2023) consists of 139 datasets spanning nearly 70,000 unique chemistries, and is intended to continuously grow. In addition to outlining the software framework used for constructing and accessing the ColabFit Exchange, we also provide analyses of the data, quantifying the diversity of the database and proposing metrics for assessing the relative diversity of multiple datasets. Finally, we demonstrate an end-to-end IP development pipeline, utilizing datasets from the ColabFit Exchange, fitting tools from the KLIFF software package, and validation tests provided by the OpenKIM framework.

The strange-metal state is a crucial problem in condensed matter physics highlighted by its ubiquity in almost all major correlated systems[1-7]. Its understanding could provide important insight into high-Tc superconductivity[2] and quantum criticality[8]. However, with the Fermi liquid theory failing in strange metals, understanding the highly unconventional behaviors has been a long-standing challenge. Fundamental aspects of strange metals remain elusive, including the nature of their charge carriers[1]. Here, we report the observation of a giant Nernst response in the strange-metal state in a two-dimensional superconductor 2M-WS2. A giant Nernst coefficient comparable to the vortex Nernst signal in superconducting cuprates, and its high sensitivity to carrier mobility, are found when the system enters the strange-metal state from the Fermi liquid state. The temperature and magnetic field dependence of the giant Nernst peak rule out the relevance of both Landau quasiparticles and superconductivity. Instead, the giant Nernst peak at the crossover indicates a dramatic change in carrier entropy when entering the strange-metal state. The presence of such an anomalous Nernst response is further confirmed in other iconic strange metals, suggesting its universality and places stringent experimental constraints on the mechanism of strange metals.

The recent observation of superconductivity at the interfaces between KTaO3 and EuO (or LaAlO3) offers a new example of emergent phenomena at oxide interfaces. This superconductivity exhibits an unusual strong dependence on the crystalline orientation of KTaO3 and its superconducting transition temperature Tc is nearly one order of magnitude higher than that of the seminal LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface. To understand its mechanism, it is crucial to address if the formation of oxide interfaces is indispensable for the presence of superconductivity. Here, by exploiting ionic liquid (IL) gating, we obtain superconductivity at KTaO3 (111) and (110) surfaces with Tc up to 2.0 K and 1.0 K, respectively. This oxide-interface-free superconductivity gives a clear experimental evidence that the essential physics of KTaO3 interface superconductivity lies in the KTaO3 surfaces doped with electrons. Moreover, the ability to control superconductivity at surfaces with IL provides a simple way to study the intrinsic superconductivity in KTaO3.

We report muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) and neutron diffraction on the rare-earth based magnets (Mo$_{2/3}$RE$_{1/3}$)$_2$AlC, also predicted as parent materials for 2D derivatives, where RE = Nd, Gd (only ($μ$SR), Tb, Dy, Ho and Er. By crossing information between the two techniques, we determine the magnetic moment ($m$), structure, and dynamic properties of all compounds. We find that only for RE = Nd and Gd the moments are frozen on a microsecond time scale. Out of these two, the most promising compound for a potential 2D high ($m$) magnet is the Gd variant, since the parent crystals are pristine with $m = 6.5 \pm 0.5 μ_B$, Néel temperature of $29 \pm 1$ K, and the magnetic anisotropy between in and out of plane coupling is smaller than $10^{-8}$. This result suggests that magnetic ordering in the Gd variant is dominated by in-plane magnetic interactions and should therefore remain stable if exfoliated into 2D sheets.

We investigated the coexistence of superconductivity and antiferromagnetic order in the compound Er$_{2}$O$_{2}$Bi with anti-ThCr$_{2}$Si$_{2}$-type structure through resistivity, magnetization, specific heat measurements and first-principle calculations. The superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ of 1.23 K and antiferromagnetic transition temperature $T_{\rm N}$ of 3 K are observed in the sample with the best nominal composition. The superconducting upper critical field $H_{\rm c2}$(0) and electron-phonon coupling constant $λ$$_{e-ph}$ in Er$_{2}$O$_{2}$Bi are similar to those in the previously reported non-magnetic superconductor Y$_{2}$O$_{2}$Bi with the same structure, indicating that the superconductivity in Er$_{2}$O$_{2}$Bi may have the same origin as in Y$_{2}$O$_{2}$Bi. The first-principle calculations of Er$_{2}$O$_{2}$Bi show that the Fermi surface is mainly composed of the Bi 6$p$ orbitals both in the paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic state, implying minor effect of the 4$f$ electrons on the Fermi surface. Besides, upon increasing the oxygen incorporation in Er$_{2}$O$_{x}$Bi, $T_{\rm c}$ increases from 1 to 1.23 K and $T_{\rm N}$ decreases slightly from 3 to 2.96 K, revealing that superconductivity and antiferromagnetic order may compete with each other. The Hall effect measurements indicate that hole-type carrier density indeed increases with increasing oxygen content, which may account for the variations of $T_{\rm c}$ and $T_{\rm N}$ with different oxygen content.

Coexistence of topological bands and charge density wave (CDW) in topological materials has attracted immense attentions because of their fantastic properties, such as axionic-CDW, three-dimensional quantum Hall effect, etc. In this work, a nodal-line semimetal InxTaS2 characterized by CDW and superconductivity is successfully synthesized, whose structure and topological bands (two separated Wely rings) are similar to In0.58TaSe2. A 2 x 2 commensurate CDW is observed at low temperature in InxTaS2, identified by transport properties and STM measurements. Moreover, superconductivity emerges below 0.69 K, and the anisotropy ratio of upper critical field [Gamma = H||ab c2(0)=H||c c2(0)] is significantly enhanced compared to 2H-TaS2, which shares the same essential layer unit. According to the Lawrence-Doniach model, the enhanced Gamma may be explained by the reduced effective mass in kx-ky plane, where Weyl rings locate. Therefore, this type of layered topological systems may offer a platform to investigate highly anisotropic superconductivity and to understand the extremely large upper critical field in the bulk or in the two-dimensional limit.

Exciting phenomena may emerge in non-centrosymmetric two-dimensional (2D) electronic systems when spin-orbit coupling (SOC) interplays dynamically with Coulomb interactions, band topology, and external modulating forces, etc. Here, we report illuminating synergetic effects between SOC and Stark in centrosymmetric few-layer black arsenic (BAs), manifested as giant Rashba valley splitting and exotic quantum Hall states (QHS) reversibly controlled by electrostatic gating. The unusual finding is rooted in the puckering square lattice of BAs, in which heavy $4p$ orbitals form highly asymmetric $Γ$ valley with the $p_{z}$ symmetry and $D$ valleys of the $p_{x}$ origin, located at the Brillouin zone (BZ) center and near the time reversal invariant momenta of $X$, respectively. When the structure inversion symmetry is broken by perpendicular electric field, giant Rashba SOC is activated for the $p_{x}$ bands to produce strong spin-polarized $D^{+}$ and $D^{-}$ valleys related by time-reversal symmetry, coexisting with weak $Γ$ Rashba bands constrained by the $p_{z}$ symmetry. Intriguingly, strong Stark effect shows the same $p_{x}$-orbital selectiveness for $D$, collectively shifting the valence band maximum of $D^{\pm}$ valleys to exceed the $Γ$ pockets. Such an orchestrating effect between SOC and Stark allows us to realize gate-tunable spin valley manipulations for 2D hole gas, as revealed by unconventional magnetic field triggered even-to-odd transitions in QHS. For electron do**, the quantization of the $Γ$ Rashba bands is characterized by peculiar density-dependent transitions in band topology from two parabolic valleys to a unique inner-outer helical structure when charge carrier concentrations increase.

Type-I superconductivity is confirmed by dc magnetization, field-induced second-to first-order phase transition in specific heat, and a small Ginzburg-Landau parameter $κ_{GL}=0.12$. The isothermal magnetization measurements show that there is a crossover from type-I to type-II/1 superconductivity with decreasing temperature and an unusually enhanced surface superconducting critical field ($H_{c3}$) is discovered. The band structure calculations indicate the presence of Kramer-Weyl nodes near the Fermi level. These observations demonstrate that NbGe$_{2}$ is an interesting and rare example involving the possible interplay of type-I superconductivity, noncentrosymmetric structure and topological properties.

Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) clearly display the misfit feature between SnSe and NbSe$_2$ subsystems. The Sommerfeld coefficient $γ$ inferred from specific-heat measurements is 16.73 mJ mol$^{-1}$ K$^{-2}$, slightly larger than the usual misfit compounds. The normalized specific heat jump $Δ$$C_e$/$γ$$T_{\rm c}$ is about 0.98, and the electron-phonon coupling constant $λ$$_{e-ph}$ is estimated to be 0.80. The estimated value of the in-plane upper critical magnetic field, $H_{c2}^{ab}$(0), is about 7.82 T, exceeding the Pauli paramagnetic limit slightly. However, there is no report on the physical properties of 4$Ha$ polytype up to now. Here we report the crystal growth and discovery of superconductivity in the tantalum self-intercalated 4$Ha$-Ta$_{1.03}$Se$_2$ single crystal with a superconducting transition onset temperature $T_{\rm c}$ $\approx$ 2.7 K, which is the first observation of superconductivity in 4$Ha$ polytype of TaSe$_2$. A slightly suppressed CDW transition is found around 106 K. A large $μ_0H_{\rm c2}/T_{\rm c}$ value of about 4.48 is found when magnetic field is applied in the $ab$ plane, which probably results from the enhanced spin-orbit coupling(SOC). Special stacking faults are observed, which further enhance the anisotropy. Although the density of states at the Fermi level is lower than that of other polytypes, $T_{\rm c}$ remains the same, indicating the stack mode of 4$Ha$ polytype may be beneficial to superconductivity in TaSe$_2$.

Here we present a hole-compensation study by introducing extra itinerant electrons via a Ni substitution in the ferromagnetic superconductor RbEuFe$_4$As$_4$ with $T_{\mathrm{sc}}>T_{\mathrm{m}}$. With the Ni do**, $T_{\mathrm{sc}}$ decreases rapidly, and the Eu-spin ferromagnetism and its $T_{\mathrm{m}}$ remain unchanged. Consequently, the system RbEu(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_4$As$_4$ transforms into a superconducting ferromagnet with $T_{\mathrm{m}}>T_{\mathrm{sc}}$ for $0.07\leq x\leq0.08$. The occurrence of superconducting ferromagnets is attributed to the decoupling between Eu$^{2+}$ spins and superconducting Cooper pairs. The superconducting and magnetic phase diagram is established, which additionally includes a recovered yet suppressed spin-density-wave state.

Here we present low-field magnetic measurements on single crystals of the iron-based ferromagnetic superconductor Eu(Fe$_{0.91}$Rh$_{0.09}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ which undergoes a superconducting transition at $T_\mathrm{sc}$ = 19.6 K followed by a magnetic transition at $T_\mathrm{m}$ = 16.8 K. We observe a characteristic first-order transition from a Meissner state within $T_\mathrm{m}<T<T_\mathrm{sc}$ to an SVP below $T_\mathrm{m}$, under a magnetic field approaching zero. Additional isothermal magnetization and ac magnetization measurements at $T\ll T_\mathrm{sc}$ confirm that the system is intrinsically in a spontaneous-vortex ground state. The unambiguous demonstration of SVP in the title material lays a solid foundation for future imaging and spectroscopic studies on this intriguing quantum matter.

Nano-polycrystalline diamond (NPD) and nanotwinned diamond (NtD) were successfully synthesized in multi-anvil high pressure apparatus at high pressure and high temperature (HPHT) conditions using precursors of onion carbons. We found that the choices of distinct onion carbons with hollow or multi-cored microstructures lead to the synthesis of different diamond products of NPD or NtD ones. High quality NtD with an average twin size of 6.8 nm has been synthesized whose Vickers hardness reaches as high as 180 GPa as measured by indentation hardness experiment. The existence of stacking faults other than various defects in the onion carbon is found to be crucial to form twin boundary in the product. The origin of the extraordinarily high Vickers hardness in the NtD sample is attributable to the high concentration of twin boundary. Our work gave a direct support on the argument that pursuit of nanotwinned microstructure is an effective strategy to harden materials, in good coincidence with the well-known Hall-Petch effect.

We synthesized a series of Nb$_{2}$Pd$_{1-x}$Ru$_{x}$S$_{5}$ polycrystalline samples by a solid-state reaction method and systematically investigated the Ru-do** effect on superconductivity by transport and magnetic measurements. It is found that superconductivity is enhanced with Ru do** and is quite robust upon disorder. Hall coefficient measurements indicate that the charge transport is dominated by hole-type charge carriers similar to the case of Ir do**, suggesting multi-band superconductivity. Upon Ru or Ir do**, \emph H$_{c2}$/$\emph T_c$ exhibits a significant enhancement, exceeding the Pauli paramagnetic limit value by a factor of approximately 4. A comparison of $T_c$ and the upper critical field ($H_{c2}$) amongst the different do** elements on Pd site, reveals a significant role of spin--orbit coupling.

We discover a robust coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism in an iron arsenide RbEuFe$_4$As$_4$. The new material crystallizes in an intergrowth structure of RbFe$_2$As$_2$ and EuFe$_2$As$_2$, such that the Eu sublattice turns out to be primitive instead of being body-centered in EuFe$_2$As$_2$. The FeAs layers, featured by asymmetric As coordinations, are hole doped due to charge homogenization. Our combined measurements of electrical transport, magnetization and heat capacity unambiguously and consistently indicate bulk superconductivity at 36.5 K in the FeAs layers and ferromagnetism at 15 K in the Eu sublattice. Interestingly, the Eu-spin ferromagnetic ordering belongs to a rare third-order transition, according to the Ehrenfest classification of phase transition. We also identify an additional anomaly at $\sim$ 5 K, which is possibly associated with the interplay between superconductivity and ferromagnetism.

Cubic SrTiO$_{3}$ becomes tetragonal below 105 K. The antiferrodistortive (AFD) distortion leads to clockwise and counter-clockwise rotation of adjacent TiO$_{6}$ octahedra. This insulator becomes a metal upon the introduction of extremely low concentration of n-type dopants. However, signatures of the structural phase transition in charge conduction have remained elusive. Employing the Montgomery technique, we succeed in resolving the anisotropy of charge conductivity induced by the AFD transition, in the presence of different types of dopants. We find that the slight lattice distortion ($<6 \times 10^{-4}$) gives rise to a twenty percent anisotropy in charge conductivity, in agreement with the expectations of band calculations. Application of uniaxial strain amplifies the detectable anisotropy by disfavoring one of the three possible tetragonal domains. In contrast with all other known anisotropic Fermi liquids, the anisotropy has opposite signs for elastic and inelastic scattering. Increasing the concentration of dopants leads to a drastic shift in the temperature of the AFD transition either upward or downward. The latter result puts strong constraints on any hypothetical role played by the AFD soft mode in the formation of Cooper pairs and the emergence of superconductivity in SrTiO$_3$.

Pd site do** effect on superconductivity was investigated in quasi-one-dimensional superconductor Nb2(Pd1-xRx)0.76S5 (R=Ir, Ag) by measuring resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and Hall effect. It was found that superconducting transition temperature (Tc) is firstly slightly enhanced by partial substitution of Pd with Ir and then it is suppressed gradually as Ir content increases further. Meanwhile Ag substitution quickly suppresses the system to a nonsuperconducting ground state. Hall effect measurements indicate the variations of charge carrier density caused by Ir or Ag do**. The established phase diagram implies that the charge carrier density (or the band filling) could be one of the crucial controlling factors to determine Tc in this system.

We present a study of angle-resolved quantum oscillations of electric and thermoelectric transport coefficients in semi-metallic WTe$_{2}$, which has the particularity of displaying a large B$^{2}$ magneto-resistance. The Fermi surface consists of two pairs of electron-like and hole-like pockets of equal volumes in a "Russian doll" structure. Carrier density, Fermi energy, mobility and the mean-free-path of the system are quantified. An additional frequency is observed above a threshold field and attributed to magnetic breakdown across two orbits. In contrast to all other dilute metals, the Nernst signal remains linear in magnetic field even in the high-field ($ω_cτ\gg 1$) regime. Surprisingly, none of the pockets extend across the c-axis of the first Brillouin zone, making the system a three-dimensional metal with moderate anisotropy in Fermi velocity yet a large anisotropy in mean-free-path.

There are two crystallographically distinct Eu sites, Eu(1) and Eu(2) at the Wyckoff positions 4e and 2a, respectively. Our bond-valence-sum calculation, based on the refined structural data, indicates that Eu(1) is essentially divalent, whilst Eu(2) has an average valence of +2.64(5). This anomalous Eu valence state is further confirmed and supported, respectively, by Mossbauer and magnetization measurements. The Eu3+ components donate electrons into the conduction bands that are mainly composed of Bi- 6px and 6py states. Consequently, the material itself shows metallic conduction, and superconducts at 1.5 K without extrinsic chemical do**.

The time spectra for both compounds are as expected for the paramagnetic state at high temperatures, but deviate from the exponential function below about 100 K. The muon spin relaxation rate increases with decreasing temperature firstly, and then levels off below about 10 K, which is reminiscent of the frustrated systems. An enhancement of the relaxation rate by a longitudinal field in the paramagnetic state is observed for NTO, and eliminated by a magnetic dilution for the NLTO sample. This suggests that the spectral density is modified by a magnetic dilution and thus indicates that the spins behave cooperatively rather than individually. Zero-field measurement at 0.3 K indicates that the magnetic ground state for NTO is ferromagnetic.

Superconductivity (SC) and charge-density wave (CDW) are two contrasting yet relevant collective electronic states which have received sustained interest for decades. Here we report that, in a layered europium bismuth sulfofluoride, EuBiS$_2$F, a CDW-like transition occurs at 280 K, below which SC emerges at 0.3 K, without any extrinsic do**. The Eu ions were found to exhibit an anomalously temperature-independent mixed valence of about +2.2, associated with the formation of CDW. The mixed valence of Eu gives rise to self electron do** into the conduction bands mainly consisting of the in-plane Bi-6$p$ states, which in turn brings about the CDW and SC. In particular, the electronic specific-heat coefficient is enhanced by ~ 50 times, owing to the significant hybridizations between Eu-4$f$ and Bi-6$p$ electrons, as verified by band-structure calculations. Thus, EuBiS$_2$F manifests itself as an unprecedented material that simultaneously accommodates SC, CDW and $f$-electron valence instability.

In this paper, we systematically study the electron do** effect in a new BiS2-based system Sr1-xLaxFBiS2(0<x<0.7) through multiple techniques of X-ray diffraction, electrical transport, magnetic susceptibility, and Hall effect measurements. The parent compound SrFBiS2 is found to possess a semiconducting-like ground state, with thermally activation energy Eg=38 meV. By the partial substitution of La for Sr, superconductivity emerges when x > 0.3, reaching its maximal superconducting transition temperature Tc=3.5 K at x=0.55. In the normal state of superconducting samples, it is clearly seen that there exists a crossover from metallic to semiconducting state below a temperature Tmin, which shifts to lower temperatures with increasing La content. Based on these measurements, the associated electronic phase diagram of Sr1-xLaxFBiS2 system has thus been established.

Superconducting transition with critical temperature Tc of 2.8 K, developed from a semiconducting-like normal state, was found in Sr0.5La0.5FBiS2. A strong diamagnetic signal and a clear specific heat anomaly associated with this transition were observed, confirming bulk superconductivity. The upper critical field Hc2(0) was estimated to be 1 Tesla by using the Ginzburg-Landau approach. Our experiments therefore demonstrate that bulk superconductivity can be achieved by electron do** in the SrFBiS2 system.

We have performed an isovalent substitution study in a layered titanium oxypnictide system BaTi$_{2}$(Sb$_{1-x}$Bi$_{x}$)$_{2}$O (0$\leq x\leq$ 0.40) by the measurements of x-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility. The parent compound BaTi$_{2}$Sb$_{2}$O is confirmed to exhibit superconductivity at 1.5 K as well as charge- or spin-density wave (CDW/SDW) ordering below 55 K. With the partial substitution of Sb by Bi, the lattice parameters $a$, $c$ and $c/a$ all increase monotonically, indicating negative chemical pressure and lattice distortion on the (super)conducting Ti$_2$Sb$_2$O-layers. The Bi do** elevates the superconducting transition temperature to its maximum $T_c$=3.7 K at $x=$0.17, and then $T_c$ decreases gradually with additional Bi do**. A metal-to-nonmetal transition takes place around $x$=0.3, and superconductivity at $\sim$1K exists at the nonmetal side. The CDW/SDW anomaly, in comparison, is rapidly suppressed by the Bi do**, and vanishes for $x\geq$0.17. The results are discussed in terms of negative chemical pressure and disorder effect.

The superconducting, transport, and structural properties of optimally electron-doped BaFe$_{1.9}$Ni$_{0.1}$As$_{2}$ are investigated by combining the electrical resistance and synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements at high pressures. The superconducting transition temperature of this system is found to decrease in a similar way of the axial ratio of $c/a$ with increasing pressure but vanishing at a critical pressure of 7.5 GPa where $c/a$ has a dip and an isostructural transformation from a tetragonal to a collapsed tetragonal phase takes place. The resistance is found to obey a linear temperature dependence, evidencing the antiferromagnetic spin-fluctuations transport mechanism. The pressure effects are interpreted within the framework of pressure-induced Fermi surface topology modification in which pressure suppresses both the quasiparticle effective mass and the strength of the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations leading to the reduction of superconductivity, accordingly. The absent superconductivity in the collapsed tetragonal phase is suggested to result from the complete suppression of the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations.

The magnetic phase diagram has been mapped out via the measurements of electronic resistivity, magnetization and specific heat in the cobalt-based layered LnCo1-xFexAsO (Ln=La, Sm) compounds. The ferromagnetic (FM) transition at 63 K for LaCoAsO is rapidly suppressed upon Fe do**, and ultimately disappears around x=0.3 in the LaCo1-xFexAsO system. When La is replaced by magnetic rare earth element Sm, the 3d electrons first undergo a FM transition at Tc = 75 K, followed by an antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition at a lower temperature TN1 = 45 K. With partial Fe do** on the Co site, both FM (Tc) and AFM (TN1) transition temperatures are significantly suppressed, and finally approach zero kelvin at x = 0.3 and 0.2, respectively. Meanwhile, a third magnetic transition at TN2 = 5.6 K for SmCoAsO, associated with the AFM order of the Sm3+ 4f-oments, is uncovered and TN2 is found to be almost robust against the small Fe-do**. These results suggest that the 4f electrons of Sm3+ have an important effect on the magnetic behavior of 3d electrons in the 1111 type Co-based LnCo1-xFexAsO systems. In contrast, the magnetism of the f-electrons is relatively unaffected by the variation of the 3d electrons. The rich magnetic phase diagram in the Co-rich side of the LnCo1-xFexAsO system, therefore, is established.

In the presence of Zn impurity, the superconducting transition temperature, $T_c^{mid}$, is severely suppressed. The result is consistent with the theoretic prediction on the effect of non-magnetic impurity in the scenario of $s_{\pm}$ pairing, but it is in sharp contrast to the previous report on the effect of Zn impurity in the F-doped systems. The possible interpretation of the different effects of Zn impurity on superconductivity in different systems is discussed.

The thermopower and Nernst effect were investigated for undoped parent compounds LaFeAsO and LaNiAsO. Both thermopower and Nernst signal in iron-based LaFeAsO are significantly larger than those in nickel-based LaNiAsO. Furthermore, abrupt changes in both thermopower and Nernst effect are observed below the structural phase transition temperature and spin-density wave (SDW) type antiferromagnetic (AFM) order temperature in Fe-based LaFeAsO. On the other hand, Nernst effect is very small in the Ni-based LaNiAsO and it is weakly temperature-dependent, reminiscent of the case in normal metals. We suggest that the effect of SDW order on the spin scattering rate should play an important role in the anomalous temperature dependence of Hall effect and Nernst effect in LaFeAsO. The contrast behavior between the LaFeAsO and LaNiAsO systems implies that the LaFeAsO system is fundamentally different from the LaNiAsO system and this may provide clues to the mechanism of high $T_c$ superconductivity in the Fe-based systems.

We report measurements of structural phase transition of four parent compounds $R$FeAsO ($R$ = La, Sm, Gd, and Tb) by means of low-temperature X-ray diffraction (XRD). Magnetic transition temperatures associated with Fe ions ($T_{N1}$) are also determined from the temperature dependence of resistivity. As $R$ is changed from La, through Sm and Gd, to Tb, both the c-axis and a-axis lattice constants decrease significantly. Meanwhile both the structural phase transition temperature ($T_S$) and $T_{N1}$ decrease monotonously. It is also found that the temperature gap between $T_S$ and $T_{N1}$ becomes smaller when the distance between FeAs layer becomes shorter. This result is consistent with magnetically driven structural phase transition and suggests that the dimensionality have an important effect on the AFM ordering.

We found that the solubility of Zn content ($x$) is limited to less than 0.1 in both systems and further Zn do** (i.e., $x$ $\geq$ 0.1) causes phase separation. Our study clearly indicates that the non-magnetic impurity of Zn$^{2+}$ ions doped in the Fe$_2$As$_2$ layers affects selectively the AFM order, and superconductivity remains robust against the Zn do** in the F-doped superconductors.

We report the measurements of anisotropic magnetization and magnetoresistance on single crystals of EuFe$_2$As$_2$, a parent compound of ferro-arsenide high-temperature superconductor. Apart from the antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin-density-wave transition at 186 K associated with Fe moments, the compound undergoes another magnetic phase transition at 19 K due to AFM ordering of Eu$^{2+}$ spins ($J=S=7/2$). The latter AFM state exhibits metamagnetic transition under magnetic fields. Upon applying magnetic field with $H\parallel c$ at 2 K, the magnetization increases linearly to 7.0 $μ_{B}$/f.u. at $μ_{0}H$=1.7 T, then keeps at this value of saturated Eu$^{2+}$ moments under higher fields. In the case of $H\parallel ab$, the magnetization increases step-like to 6.6 $μ_{B}$/f.u. with small magnetic hysteresis. A metamagnetic phase was identified with the saturated moments of 4.4 $μ_{B}$/f.u. The metamagnetic transition accompanies with negative in-plane magnetoresistance, reflecting the influence of Eu$^{2+}$ moments ordering on the electrical conduction of FeAs layers. The results were explained in terms of spin-reorientation and spin-reversal based on an $A$-type AFM structure for Eu$^{2+}$ spins. The magnetic phase diagram has been established.

Chemical do** has recently become a very important strategy to induce superconductivity especially in complex compounds. Distinguished examples include Ba-doped La$_2$CuO$_4$ (the first high temperature superconductor), K-doped BaBiO$_3$, K-doped C$_{60}$ and Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}\cdot y$H$_{2}$O. The most recent example is F-doped LaFeAsO, which leads to a new class of high temperature superconductors. One notes that all the above dopants are non-magnetic, because magnetic atoms generally break superconducting Cooper pairs. In addition, the do** site was out of the (super)conducting structural unit (layer or framework). Here we report that superconductivity was realized by do** magnetic element cobalt into the (super)conducting-active Fe$_2$As$_2$ layers in LaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$AsO. At surprisingly small Co-do** level of $x$=0.025, the antiferromagnetic spin-density-wave transition in the parent compound is completely suppressed, and superconductivity with $T_c\sim $ 10 K emerges. With increasing Co content, $T_c$ shows a maximum of 13 K at $x\sim 0.075$, and then drops to below 2 K at $x$=0.15. This result suggests essential differences between previous cuprate superconductor and the present iron-based arsenide one.
