We calculate the perpendicular electrical conductivity in twisted three-dimensional graphite (rotationally stacked graphite pieces) by using the effective continuum model and the recursive Green's function method. In the low twist angle regime $(θ\lesssim 2^\circ)$, the conductivity shows a nonmonotonic dependence with a peak and dip structure as a function of the twist angle. By analyzing the momentum-resolved conductance and the local density of states, this behavior is attributed to the Fano resonance between continuum states of bulk graphite and interface-localized states, which is a remnant of the flat band in the magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene. We also apply the formulation to the high-angle regime near the commensurate angle $θ\approx 21.8^\circ$, and reproduce the conductance peak observed in the experiment.

We review our study of critical phenomena in superfluid $^4$He confined in nanoporous glasses. $^4$He in nanoporous media is an ideal ground to survey the quantum phase transition of bosons. In the present work, critical phenomena were examined using a newly developed hydrodynamic mechanical resonator. The critical exponent of superfluid density $ζ$ was found to be 1.0, in contrast to 0.67 in bulk $^4$He. We also demonstrate that the superfluid density is proportional to $|P - P_{\mathrm c}|^{ζ_p}$ with $ζ_p = 1$ at any finite temperatures. These are the decisive evidences for the 4D XY criticality, which should have been observed only at 0 K, at finite temperatures. We propose a mechanism of the quantum criticality at finite temperatures in terms of phase alignment among the nanoscale localized Bose condensates (LBECs) in nanopores. The proposed mechanism are discussed in the consideration of the correlation length compared with the quantum effect.

We theoretically study emergent edge and corner states in monolayer blue phosphorus (blue phosphorene) using the first-principles calculation and tight-binding model. We show that the existence of the Wannier orbitals at every bond center yields edge states both in zigzag and armchair nanoribbons. The properties of the edge states can be well described by a simple effective Hamiltonian for uncoupled edge orbitals, where the structural relaxation near the boundary significantly affects the edge band structure. For corner states, we examine two types of corner structures consisting of zigzag and armchair edges, where we find that multiple corner states emerge in the bulk gap as a consequence of hybridization of edge and corner uncoupled orbitals. In the armchair corner, in particular, we demonstrate that corner states appear right at the Fermi energy, which leads to the emergence of fractional corner charge due to filling anomaly. Finally, we discuss the relationship between blue phosphorene and black phosphorene, and show that two systems share the equivalent Wannier orbital positions and similar edge/corner state properties even though their atomic structures are totally different.

$^4$He confined in nanoporous Gelsil glass is a unique, strongly correlated Bose system exhibiting quantum phase transition (QPT) by controlling pressure. Previous studies revealed that the QPT occurs with four - dimensional (4D) XY criticality, which appears in the zero-temperature limit of the superfluid density. However, the $P-T$ phase diagram also suggested that 4D XY nature appears at finite temperatures. Here, we have determined the critical exponent of the superfluid density of $^4$He in two Gelsil samples that have pore diameter to be about 3 nm, using a newly developed mechanical resonator technique. The critical exponent $ζ$ in the powerlaw fitting $ρ_{\mathrm s} \propto \left| 1 - T/T_{\mathrm c} \right| ^ζ$, where $T_{\mathrm c}$ is the superfluid transition temperature, was found to be 1.0 $\pm$ 0.1 for all pressures realized in this experiment, 0.1 $<$ $P$ $<$ 2.4 MPa. This value of $ζ$ gives a decisive evidence that the finite-temperature superfluid transition belongs to 4D XY universality class. The emergence of the 4D XY criticality is explained by the existence of many nanoscale superfluid droplets, the so called localized Bose - Einstein condensates (LBECs), above $T_{\mathrm c}$. Due to the large energy cost for $^4$He atoms to move between the LBECs, the phase of the LBEC order parameters fluctuates not only in spatial (3D) but imaginary time ($+1$D) dimensions, resulting in the 4D XY criticality by a temperature near $T_{\mathrm c}$, which is determined by the finite size of the system in the imaginary time dimension. Below $T_{\mathrm c}$, macroscopic superfluidity grows in the nanopores of Gelsil by the alignment of the phases of the LBEC order parameters. An excess dissipation peak observed below $T_{\mathrm c}$ is well explained by this phase matching process.

$^4$He confined in nanoporous media is a model Bose system that exhibits quantum phase transition (QPT) by varying pressure. We have precisely determined the critical exponent of the superfluid density of $^4$He in porous Gelsil glasses with pore size of 3.0 nm using the Helmholtz resonator technique. The critical exponent $ζ$ of the superfluid density was found to be 1.0 $\pm$ 0.1 for the pressure range 0.1 < P < 2.4 MPa. This value provides decisive evidence that the finite-temperature superfluid transition belongs to the four-dimensional (4D) XY universality class, in contrast to the classical 3D XY one in bulk liquid 4He, in which $ζ$ = 0.67. The quantum critical behavior at a finite temperature is understood by strong phase fluctuation in local Bose-Einstein condensates above the superfluid transition temperature. $^4$He in nanoporous media is a unique example in which quantum criticality emerges not only at 0 K but at finite temperatures.

The electron-electron Coulomb interaction in Dirac-Weyl semimetals harbours a novel paradigm of correlation effects that hybridizes diverse realms of solid-state physics with their relativistic counterpart. Driving spontaneous mass acquisition, the excitonic condensate of strongly-interacting massless Dirac fermions is one such example whose exact nature remains debated. Here, by focussing on the two-dimensional tilted Dirac cones in the organic salt $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$, we show that the excitonic instability is controlled by a small chemicalpotential shift and an in-plane magnetic field. In combined analyses based on renormalization-group approaches and ladder approximation, we demonstrate that the nuclear relaxation rate is an excellent probe of excitonic-spin fluctuations in an extended parameter region. Comparative nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments show good agreements with this result, jointly revealing the importance of intervalley nesting between field-induced, spin-split Fermi pockets of opposite charge polarities. Our work provides an accurate framework to search for excitonic instability of strongly-interacting massless fermions.

Reflection of near-infrared light is important for preventing heat transfer in energy saving applications. A large-area, mass-producible reflector that contains randomly distributed disk-shaped silver nanoparticles and that exhibits high reflection at near-infrared wavelengths was demonstrated. Although resonant coupling between incident light and the nanostructure of the reflector plays some role, what is more important is the geometrical randomness of the nanoparticles, which serves as the origin of a particle-dependent localization and hierarchical distribution of optical near-fields in the vicinity of the nanostructure. Here we show and clarified the unique optical near-field processes associated with the randomness seen in experimentally fabricated silver nanostructures by adapting a rigorous theory of optical near-fields based on an angular spectrum and detailed electromagnetic calculations.

A transition to an incommensurate ({\sf IC}) spin density wave ({\sf SDW}) state was found below 180 K (= $T_{\rm C}^{\rm on}$); and a clear oscillation due to a static internal magnetic field was observed below 140 K (= $T_{\rm C}$). Furthermore, an anisotropic behavior of the zero-field $μ^+$SR experiment indicated that the {\sf IC-SDW} propagates in the $a$-$b$ plane, with oscillating moments directed along the c axis. These results were quite similar to those for the related compound [Ca$_2$CoO$_3$]$_{0.62}^{\rm RS}$[CoO$_2$], {\sl i.e.}, Ca$_3$Co$_4$O$_9$. Since the {\sf IC-SDW} field in [Ca$_2$Co$_{4/3}$Cu$_{2/3}$O$_4$]$_{0.62}^{\rm RS}$[CoO$_2$] was approximately same to those in pure and doped [Ca$_2$CoO$_3$]$_{0.62}^{\rm RS}$[CoO$_2$], it was concluded that the {\sf IC-SDW} exist in the [CoO$_2$] planes.

This behavior is explained using the Hubbard model on two-dimensional triangular lattice in the CoO$_2$ plane.

A positive muon spin rotation and relaxation ($μ^+$SR) experiment on [Ca$_2$CoO$_3$]$_{0.62}$[CoO$_2$], ({\sl i.e.}, Ca$_3$Co$_4$O$_9$, a layered thermoelectric cobaltite) indicates the existence of two magnetic transitions at $\sim$ 100 K and 400 - 600 K; the former is a transition from a paramagnetic state to an incommensurate ({\sf IC}) spin density wave ({\sf SDW}) state. The anisotropic behavior of zero-field $μ^+$SR spectra at 5 K suggests that the {\sf IC-SDW} propagates in the $a$-$b$ plane, with oscillating moments directed along the c-axis; also the {\sf IC-SDW} is found to exist not in the [Ca$_2$CoO$_3$] subsystem but in the [CoO$_2$] subsystem. In addition, it is found that the long-range {\sf IC-SDW} order completes below $\sim$ 30 K, whereas the short-range order appears below 100 K. The latter transition is interpreted as a gradual change in the spin state of Co ions %% at temperatures above 400 K. These two magnetic transitions detected by $μ^+$SR are found to correlate closely with the transport properties of [Ca$_2$CoO$_3$]$_{0.62}$[CoO$_2$].
