The A-site ordered chromate spinels LiGa1-xInxCr4O8 host a network of size-alternating spin-3/2 Cr3+ tetrahedra known as a 'breathing' pyrochlore lattice. For the x=0.05 composition, the complex magneto-structural ordering observed in the parent x=0 material is replaced by a single transition at Tf=11 K, ascribed to the collinear nematic order caused by strong spin-lattice coupling. We present here an inelastic neutron scattering study of the spin dynamics in this composition. Above Tf , the dynamical scattering function S(Q,E) is ungapped and quasi-elastic, similar to undoped LiGaCr4O8. Below Tf , the spectral weight splits between a broad inelastic feature at 5.8 meV and toward the elastic line. The former feature can be ascribed to spin precessions within antiferromagnetic loops, lifted to finite energy by the effective biquadratic spin-lattice term in the spin Hamiltonian.

Multipolar Kondo systems offer unprecedented opportunities for designing astonishing quantum phases and functionalities beyond spin-only descriptions. A model material platform of this kind is the cubic heavy-fermion system Pr$Tr_{2}$Al$_{20}$ ($Tr=$ Ti, V), which hosts a nonmagnetic crystal-electric-field (CEF) ground state and substantial Kondo entanglement of the local quadrupolar and octopolar moments with the conduction electron sea. Here, we explore magnetoresistance (MR) and Hall effect of PrTi$_{2}$Al$_{20}$ that develops ferroquadrupolar (FQ) order below $T_{Q} \sim 2$ K and compare its behavior with that of the non-4$f$ analog, LaTi$_{2}$Al$_{20}$. In the FQ ordered phase, PrTi$_{2}$Al$_{20}$ displays extremely large magnetoresistance (XMR) of $\sim 10^{3}\%$. The unsaturated, quasi-linear field ($B$) dependence of the XMR violates the conventional Kohler's scaling and defies description based on carrier compensation alone. By comparing the MR and the Hall effect observed in PrTi$_{2}$Al$_{20}$ and LaTi$_{2}$Al$_{20}$, we conclude that the open-orbit topology on the electron-type Fermi surface (FS) sheet is key for the observed XMR. The low-temperature MR and the Hall resistivity in PrTi$_{2}$Al$_{20}$ display pronounced anisotropy in the [111] and [001] magnetic fields, which is absent in LaTi$_{2}$Al$_{20}$, suggesting that the transport anisotropy ties in with the anisotropic magnetic-field response of the quadrupolar order parameter.

A molecular Mott insulator $κ$-(ET)$_2$B(CN)$_4$ [ET = bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene] with a distorted triangular lattice exhibits a quantum disordered state with gapped spin excitation in the ground state. $^{13}$C nuclear magnetic resonance, magnetization, and magnetic torque measurements reveal that magnetic field suppresses valence bond order and induces long-range magnetic order above a critical field $\sim 8$ T. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ shows persistent evolution of antiferromagnetic correlation above the transition temperature, highlighting a quantum spin liquid state with fractional excitations. The field-induced transition as observed in the spin-Peierls phase suggests that the valence bond order transition is driven through renormalized one-dimensionality and spin-lattice coupling.

We report results of magnetization and $^{31}$P NMR measurements under high pressure up to 6.4~GPa on RbMoOPO$_4$Cl, which is a frustrated square-lattice antiferromagnet with competing nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor interactions. Anomalies in the pressure dependences of the NMR shift and the transferred hyperfine coupling constants indicate a structural phase transition at 2.6~GPa, which is likely to break mirror symmetry and triggers significant change of the exchange interactions. In fact, the NMR spectra in magnetically ordered states reveal a change from the columnar antiferromagnetic (CAF) order below 3.3~GPa to the Néel antiferromagnetic (NAF) order above 3.9~GPa. The spin lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ also indicates a change of dominant magnetic fluctuations from CAF-type to NAF-type with pressure. Although the NMR spectra in the intermediate pressure region between 3.3 and 3.9 GPa show coexistence of the CAF and NAF phases, a certain component of $1/T_1$ shows paramagnetic behavior with persistent spin fluctuations, leaving possibility for a quantum disordered phase. The easy-plane anisotropy of spin fluctuations with unusual nonmonotonic temperature dependence at ambient pressure gets reversed to the Ising anisotropy at high pressures. This unexpected anisotropic behavior for a spin 1/2 system may be ascribed to the strong spin-orbit coupling of Mo-4$d$ electrons.

Since the discovery of the Verwey transition in magnetite, transition metal compounds with pyrochlore structures have been intensively studied as a platform for realizing remarkable electronic phase transitions. We report the discovery of a unique phase transition that preserves the cubic symmetry of the beta-pyrochlore oxide CsW$_2$O$_6$, where each of W 5d electrons are confined in regular-triangle W3 trimers. This trimer formation is an unprecedented self-organization of d electrons, which can be resolved into a charge order satisfying the Anderson condition in a nontrivial way, orbital order caused by the distortion of WO6 octahedra, and the formation of a spin-singlet pair in a regular-triangle trimer. Electronic instability due to the unusual three-dimensional nesting of Fermi surfaces and the localized nature of the 5d electrons characteristic of the pyrochlore oxides were found to play important roles in this unique charge-orbital-spin coupled phenomenon.

We have performed $^{59}$Co NMR measurements of CeCoIn$_5$ down to ultralow temperatures. We find that the temperature dependence of the spin-echo intensity provides a good measure of the sample temperature, enabling us to determine a pulse condition not heating up the sample by the NMR pulses down to ultralow temperatures. From the longitudinal relaxation time ($T_1$) measurements at 5 T applied along the $c$ axis, a pronounced peak in $1/T_1T$ is observed at 20 mK, implying an appearance of magnetic order as suggested by the recent quantum oscillation measurements [H. Shishido {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 120}, 177201 (2018)]. On the other hand, the NMR spectrum shows no change below 20 mK. Moreover, the peak in $1/T_1 T$ disappears at 6 and 8 T in contrast to the results of the quantum oscillation. We discuss that an antiferromagnetic state with a moment lying in the $a$--$b$ plane can be a possible origin for the peak in $1/T_1 T$ at 5 T.

Ferro-quadrupole (FQ) order in the non-Kramers $Γ_3$ doublet system PrTi$_2$Al$_{20}$ has been investigated via angle-resolved measurements of the specific heat, rotational magnetocaloric effect, and entropy, under a rotating magnetic field within the $(1\bar{1}0)$ plane. The FQ transition occurring at 2 K is robust when the magnetic field $B$ is applied precisely along the $[111]$ direction. By contrast, the magnetic field of larger than 1 T tilted away from the $[111]$ direction sensitively changes the FQ transition to a crossover. The energy gap between the ground and first-excited states in the FQ order increases remarkably with the magnetic field in $B \parallel [001]$, but hardly depends on the magnetic-field strength, at least up to 5 T, in the field orientation between the $[111]$ and $[110]$ axes. These features can be reproduced by using a phenomenological model for FQ order assuming an anisotropic field-dependent interaction between quadrupoles, which has been recently proposed to explain the field-induced first-order phase transition in PrTi$_2$Al$_{20}$. The present study demonstrates the great potential of the field-angle-resolved measurements for evaluating possible scenarios for multipole orders.

Static and dynamic properties of the quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnet K$_2$V$_3$O$_8$ have been investigated by $^{51}$V-NMR experiments on nonmagnetic V$^{5+}$ sites. Above the structural transition temperature $T_{\rm{S}}$ = 115 K, NMR spectra are fully compatible with the $P4bm$ space group symmetry. The formation of superstructure below $T_{\rm{S}}$ causes splitting of the NMR lines, which get broadened at lower temperatures so that individual peaks are not well resolved. Evolution of NMR spectra with magnetic field along $c$-axis below the magnetic transition temperature $T_{\rm{N}} \sim 4$ K is qualitatively consistent with a simple Néel order and a spin flop transition. However, broad feature of the spectra does not rule out possible incommensurate spin structure. The spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ below $T_{\rm{N}}$ shows huge enhancement for a certain range of magnetic field, which is independent of temperature and attributed to cross relaxation due to anomalously large nuclear spin-spin coupling between V$^{5+}$ and magnetic V$^{4+}$ sites. The results indicate strong gapless spin fluctuations, which could arise from incommesurate orders or complex spin textures.

For magnetic fields along [111], 27Al-NMR and magnetization experiments reveal Qz \propto 3z2-r2 type FQ order below 2 K independent of field strength. Magnetic fields along [001] or [110], however, induce discontinuous switching of order parameters within the two dimensional space spanned by Qz and Qx \propto x2-y2 at small field values less than a few tesla. A symmetry-based theoretical analysis shows that the transitions can be caused by competition between the magnetic Zeeman interaction and anisotropy in the quadrupole-quadrupole interactions, if the latter dominates over the former in low fields and vice versa in high fields. Furthermore, striking violation of proportionality between NMR Knight shift and magnetic susceptibility is observed in the symmetry-broken FQ phases, indicating significant influence of FQ order on the hybridization between conduction and f electrons, which in turn mediates the RKKY-type quadrupole interaction causing the FQ order. This feedback effect may be a specific feature of quadrupole orders not commonly observed in magnetic phase transitions and play a key role for inducing the discontinuous transitions.

Intermetallic compounds containing $f$-electron elements have been prototypical materials for investigating strong electron correlations and quantum criticality (QC). Their heavy fermion ground state evoked by the magnetic $f$-electrons is susceptible to the onset of quantum phases, such as magnetism or superconductivity, due to the enhanced effective mass ($m^{*}$) and a corresponding decrease of the Fermi temperature. However, the presence of $f$-electron valence fluctuations to a non-magnetic state is regarded an anathema to QC, as it usually generates a paramagnetic Fermi-liquid state with quasiparticles of moderate $m^{*}$. Such systems are typically isotropic, with a characteristic energy scale $T_0$ of the order of hundreds of kelvins that require large magnetic fields or pressures to promote a valence or magnetic instability. Here we show that the intermediate valence compound $α$-YbAlB$_4$ surprisingly exhibits both quantum critical behaviour and a Lifshitz transition under low magnetic field, which is attributed to the anisotropy of the hybridization between the conduction and localized $f$-electrons. These findings suggest a new route to bypass the large valence energy scale in develo** the QC.

Ab initio calculations indicate the formation of an S = 1/2 square lattice, in which six types of nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic- and antiferromagnetic interactions cause frustration. By applying a magnetic field, we observe an unusually gradual increase of magnetization and a subsequent 1/2-plateau-like behavior. A numerical analysis using the tensor network method qualitatively demonstrates such behaviors and suggests a collinear ordered state and a field-enhanced quantum fluctuation. Furthermore, the local magnetization and T1^-1 probed by nuclear magnetic resonance measurements support these findings.

Instead, reverse Monte Carlo fitting of the magnetic diffuse scattering indicates that the low temperature phase may be described as a collinear spin nematic state, characterized by a quadrupolar order parameter. This state also shows signs of short range order between collinear spin arrangements on tetrahedra, revealed by map** the reverse Monte Carlo spin configurations onto a three-state color model describing the manifold of nematic states.

We report on the dynamics of the spin-1/2 quasi-one-dimensional frustrated magnet LiCuVO$\mathrm{_4}$ measured by nuclear spin relaxation in high magnetic fields 10--34 T, in which the ground state has spin-density-wave order. The spin fluctuations in the paramagnetic phase exhibit striking anisotropy with respect to the magnetic field. The transverse excitation spectrum probed by $^{51}$V nuclei has an excitation gap, which increases with field. On the other hand, the gapless longitudinal fluctuations sensed by $^7$Li nuclei grow with lowering temperature, but tend to be suppressed with increasing field. Such anisotropic spin dynamics and its field dependence agree with the theoretical predictions and are ascribed to the formation of bound magnon pairs, a remarkable consequence of the frustration between ferromagnetic nearest neighbor and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interactions.

We report the results of 27Al-NMR measurements on a single crystal of PrTi2Al20. This compound shows a phase transition near 2 K associated with the quadrupole degree of freedom of Pr ions, for which the ground state of the crystalline electric field is a nonmagnetic doublet. When a magnetic field is applied along the <111> direction, the NMR lines split upon entering the low-temperature phase, indicating the breaking of the three fold rotation symmetry due to the field-induced magnetic dipole perpendicular to the field. This provides microscopic evidence for a ferro order of the O20 quadrupole. Although a first-order transition is expected theoretically, the line splitting evolves continuously within the experimental resolution.

Abstract:
The effects of pressure on a quantum spin liquid are investigated in an organic Mott insulator $κ$-(ET)$_2$Ag$_2$(CN)$_3$ with a spin-1/2 triangular lattice. The effects of pressure on a quantum spin liquid are investigated in an organic Mott insulator $κ$-(ET)$_2$Ag$_2$(CN)$_3$ with a spin-1/2 triangular lattice. The application of negative chemical pressure to $κ$-(ET)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$, which is a well-known sister Mott insulator, allows for extensive tuning of antiferromagnetic exchange coupling, with $J/k_{\rm B} = 175 - 310$ K, under hydrostatic pressure. Based on $^{13}$C nuclear magnetic resonance measurements under pressure, we uncover universal scaling in the static and dynamic spin susceptibilities down to low temperatures $\sim 0.1k_{\rm B}T/J$. The persistent fluctuations and residual specific heat coefficient are consistent with the presence of gapless low-lying excitations. Our results thus demonstrate fundamental finite-temperature properties of quantum spin liquid in a wide parameter range.

In the 1/3 magnetization plateau above 28 T, the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 indicates an excitation gap with a large effective g factor in the range of 4.6-5.9, pointing to magnon bound states. Below 26 T where the gap has closed, the NMR spectra indicate small internal fields with a Gaussian-like distribution, whereas 1/T1 shows a power-law-like temperature dependence in the paramagnetic state, which resembles a slowing down of spin fluctuations associated with magnetic order. We discuss the possibility of an exotic spin state caused by the condensation of magnon bound states below the magnetization plateau.

The hyperfine coupling tensor at the Al(3) sites is strongly anisotropic and much larger than the classical dipolar coupling, indication importance of the anisotropic hybridization between the conduction and f electron states.

We found an intermediate orthorhombic phase between $T_{\rm c2} \sim$~130 K and $T_{\rm c1} \sim$~100 K, whereas a tetragonal phase appears for $T > T_{\rm c2}$ and $T < T_{\rm c1}$. The absence of long-range magnetic order was confirmed by $μ$SR at the reentrant tetragonal phase below $T_{\rm c1}$, where the relative enhancement in the $c$-axis length versus that of the $a$-axis length was observed. However, no clear indication of the lowering of the tetragonal lattice symmetry with superlattice modulation, which is expected in the orbital order state with superstructure of $d_{yz}$ and $d_{zx}$ orbitals, was observed by SR-XRD below $T_{\rm c1}$. Instead, it was inferred from $μ$SR that a magnetic state developed below $T_{\rm c0} \sim$~10 K, which was characterized by the highly inhomogeneous and fluctuating local magnetic fields down to 30 mK. We argue that the anomalous magnetic ground state below $T_{\rm c0}$ originates from the coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic correlations.

An extremely wide 1/3 magnetization plateau appears above 28 T and continues over 74 T at 1.4 K, which has not been observed in previous study using polycrystalline samples. NMR spectra reveal an incommensurate order (most likely a spin-density wave order) below 22 T and a simple spin structure in the plateau phase. Moreover, a novel intermediate phase is found between 23 and 26 T, where the magnetization varies linearly with magnetic field and the NMR spectra indicate an inhomogeneous distribution of the internal magnetic field. This sequence of phases in volborthite bear a striking similarity to those of frustrated spin chains with a ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor coupling J1 competing with an antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor coupling J2.

We report 7Li-NMR studies on LiInCr4O8 and LiGaCr4O8, in which Cr3+ ions with spin 3/2 form a breathing pyrochlore lattice, a network of tetrahedra with alternating sizes. In LiInCr4O8 with large alternation, the nuclear relaxation rate 1/T1 shows an activated temperature (T) dependence down to 18 K, indicating a singlet ground state with a spin gap. This behavior, however, is disrupted by an antiferromagnetic (AF) transition at 13 K, which is preceded by another, most likely structural, transition at 16 K. In contrast, LiGaCr4O8 with small alternation shows no spin gap but exhibits a first-order AF transition over a distributed T-range 13-20 K. Nevertheless, 1/T1 of the paramagnetic phase diverges toward 13 K, indicating proximity to a second-order transition. The results indicate that LiGaCr4O8 is located in the vicinity of a tricritical point in the phase diagram.

We have performed NMR experiments on the quasi one-dimensional frustrated spin-1/2 system LiCuVO$_4$ in magnetic fields $H$ applied along the c-axis up to field values near the saturation field $H_{\rm sat}$. For the field range $H_{\rm c2}<H<H_{\rm c3}$ ($μ_0H_{\rm c2}\approx 7.5$T and $μ_0H_{\rm c3} = [40.5 \pm 0.2]$T) the $^{51}$V NMR spectra at $T$ = 380mK exhibit a characteristic double-horn pattern, as expected for a spin-modulated phase in which the magnetic moments of Cu$^{2+}$ ions are aligned parallel to the applied field $H$ and their magnitudes change sinusoidally along the magnetic chains. For higher fields, the $^{51}$V NMR spectral shape changes from the double-horn pattern into a single Lorentzian line. For this Lorentzian line, the internal field at the $^{51}$V nuclei stays constant for $μ_0 H > 41.4$T, indicating that the majority of magnetic moments in LiCuVO$_4$ are already saturated in this field range. This result is inconsistent with the previously observed linear field dependence of the magnetization $M(H)$ for $H_{\rm c3}<H<H_{\rm sat}$ with $μ_0H_{\rm sat}=45$T [L. E. Svistov {\it et al}., JETP Letters {\bf 93}, 21 (2011)]. We argue that the discrepancy is due to non-magnetic defects in the samples. The results of the spin-lattice relaxation rate of $^7$Li nuclei indicate an energy gap which grows with field twice as fast as the Zeeman energy of a single spin, therefore, suggesting that the two-magnon bound state is the lowest energy excitation. The energy gap tends to close at $μ_0H \approx 41$T. Our results suggest that the theoretically predicted spin-nematic phase, if it exists in LiCuVO$_4$, can be established only within the narrow field range $40.5 < μ_0 H < 41.4$T .

The NMR spectra of ^7Li and ^{51}V nuclei indicate a helical spin order in a magnetic field of 4 T with the helical spin plane perpendicular to the field and a spin-density-wave (SDW) order at 10 T with modulation in the magnitude of the moments aligned along the field, in agreement with earlier reports. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 at ^{51}V nuclei, which is selectively coupled to the transverse spin fluctuations perpendicular to the field, shows a pronounced peak near the helical ordering temperature in the field of 4 T applied along the a-axis. In the field of 10 T, however, such a peak is absent. Instead 1/T_1 at ^7Li nuclei probing longitudinal spin fluctuations shows divergent behavior towards the SDW ordering temperature. These results are qualitatively consistent with the theoretical description that the SDW correlation is due to bound magnon pairs, which produce an energy gap in the transverse spin excitation spectrum.

Cd2Os2O7 shows a peculiar metal-insulator transition at 227 K with magnetic ordering in a frustrated pyrochlore lattice, but its magnetic structure in the ordered state and the transition origin are yet uncovered. We observed a commensurate magnetic peak by resonant x-ray scattering in a high-quality single crystal. X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering experiments confirmed that the transition is not accompanied with any spatial symmetry breaking. We propose a noncollinear all-in/all-out spin arrangement on the tetrahedral network made of Os atoms. Based on this we suggest that the transition is not caused by Slater mechanism as believed earlier but by an alternative mechanism related to the formation of the specific tetrahedral magnetic order on the pyrochlore lattice in the presence of strong spin-orbit interactions.

Fractionalisation -- the breaking up of an apparently indivisible microscopic degree of freedom -- is one of the most counterintuitive phenomena in many-body physics. Here we study its most fundamental manifestation in spin ice, the only known fractionalised magnetic compound in 3D: we directly visualise the $1/r^2$ magnetic Coulomb field of monopoles which emerge as the atomic magnetic dipoles fractionalise. We analyse the internal magnetic field distribution, relevant for local experimental probes. In particular, we present new zero-field NMR measurements which exhibit excellent agreement with the calculated lineshapes, noting that this experimental technique can in principle measure directly the monopole density in spin ice. The distribution of field strengths is captured by a simple analytical form which exhibits a low density of low-field sites---in apparent disagreement with reported $μ$SR results. Counterintuitively, the density of low-field locations decreases as the local ferromagnetic correlations imposed by the ice rules weaken.

We report results of 51V NMR experiments on a high-quality powder sample of volborthite Cu3V2O7(OH)2/2H2O, a spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a distorted kagome lattice. Following the previous experiments in magnetic fields $B$ below 12 T, the NMR measurements have been extended to higher fields up to 31 T. In addition to the two already known ordered phases (phases I and II), we found a new high-field phase (phase III) above 25 T, at which a second magnetization step has been observed. The transition from the paramagnetic phase to the antiferromagnetic phase III occurs at 26 K, which is much higher than the transition temperatures from the paramagnetic to the lower field phases I (B < 4.5 T) and II (4.5 < B < 25 T). At low temperatures, two types of the V sites are observed with different relaxation rates and line shapes in phase III as well as in phase II. Our results indicate that both phases II and III exhibit a heterogeneous spin state consisting of two spatially alternating Cu spin systems, one of which exhibits anomalous spin fluctuations contrasting with the other showing a conventional static order. The magnetization of the latter system exhibits a sudden increase upon entering into phase III, resulting in the second magnetization step at 26 T.We discuss the possible spin structure in phase III.

The NMR spectra at low enough temperatures consist of sharp peaks showing a commensurate stripe AF order with a small moment \sim 0.3 muB. However, the spectra just below T_AF exhibits highly asymmetric broadening pointing to an incommensurate modulation. The commensurate-incommensurate crossover in NaFeAs shows a certain similarity to the behavior of SrFe2As2 under high pressure.

We report results of NMR experiments on the ruthenium oxide Hg2Ru2O7 with the pyrochlore structure, which exhibits a metal-insulator transition at TMI = 107 K. In the metallic phase above TMI, the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 and the Knight shift at the Hg sites follow the Korringa relation, indicating the absence of substantial spatial spin correlation. At low temperatures in the insulating phase, 99,101Ru-NMR signals are observed at zero magnetic field, providing evidence for a commensurate antiferromagnetic order. The estimated ordered moment is about 1 muB per Ru, much smaller than 3 muB expected for the ionic (4d)3plus configuration of Ru5plus. Thus the localized spin models are not appropriate for the insulating phase of Hg2Ru2O7. We also discuss possible antiferromagnetic spin structures.

Non-magnetic tungsten carbide (NMWC) is used for the anvils. The assembled cell with the dimension φ29mm \times 41mm is capable of generating pressure up to 9 GPa over a relatively large volume of 7 mm3. Our cell is particularly suitable for those experiments which require large sample space to achieve good signal-to-noise ratio, such as the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiment. Argon is used as the pressure transmitting medium to obtain good hydrostaticity. The pressure was calibrated in situ by measuring the fluorescence from ruby through a transparent moissanite (6H-SiC) window. We have measured the pressure and temperature dependences of the 63Cu nuclear-quadrupole-resonance (NQR) frequency of Cu2O, the in-plane Knight shift of metallic tin, and the Knight shift of platinum. These quantities can be used as reliable manometers to determine the pressure values in situ during the NMR/NQR experiments up to 9 GPa.

Referring to the lattice symmetry, the formation of Nb$_8$ octamer (Nb$_4$--Nb$_4$ bond) is suggested.

The NMR spectra at 5.4 GPa indicate simultaneous development of the SC and AF orders below 30 K. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate in the SC domains shows a substantial residual density of states, suggesting proximity effects due to spontaneous formation of a nano-scale SC/AF hybrid structure. This entangled behavior is a remarkable example of a self-organized heterogeneous structure in a clean system.

In the magnetic fields below 4.5 T, a sharp peak in the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 accompanied with line broadening revealed a magnetic transition near 1 K. The low temperature phase shows anomalies such as a Lorentzian line shape, a 1/T1 propto T behavior indicating dense low energy excitations, and a large spin-echo decay rate 1/T2 pointing to unusually slow fluctuations. Another magnetic phase appears above 4.5 T with less anomalous spectral shape and dynamics.

The NMR spectra clearly show sharp first-order antiferromagnetic (AF) and structural transitions occurring simultaneously. The behavior in the vicinity of the transition is compared with our previous study on BaFe2As2. No significant difference was observed in the temperature dependence of the static quantities such as the AF splitting and electric quadrupole splitting. However, the results of the NMR relaxation rate revealed difference in the dynamical spin fluctuations. The stripe-type AF fluctuations in the paramagnetic state appear to be more anisotropic in BaFe2As2 than in SrFe2As2.

Magnetic properties of the spin-1/2 kagome-like compound volborthite are studied using a high-quality polycrystalline sample. It is evidenced from magnetization and specific heat measurements that the spins on the kagome lattice still fluctuate at low temperature, down to T = 60 mK that corresponds to 1/1500 of the nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interaction, exhibiting neither a conventional long-range order nor a spin gap. In contrast, 51V NMR experiments revealed a sharp peak at 1 K in relaxation rate, which indicates that a certain exotic order occurs. Surprisingly, we have observed three "steps" in magnetization as a function of magnetic field, suggesting that at least four liquid-like or other quantum states exist under magnetic fields.

Volborthite shows a broad maximum at T ~ J / 4 and the approach at T = 0 to a large finite value of the bulk magnetic susceptibility chi_bulk as well as the local susceptibility chi_local from NMR measurements. These must be intrinsic properties for the spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnet, as similar behavior has also been reported in chi_local for herbertsmithite [Olariu A et al. 2008 Phys. Rev. A first-order antiferromagnetic (AF) transition near 135 K was detected by the splitting of NMR lines, which is accompanied by simultaneous structural transition as evidenced by a sudden large change of the electric field gradient tensor at the As site. The NMR results lead almost uniquely to the stripe spin structure in the AF phase. The data of spin-lattice relaxation rate indicate development of anisotropic spin fluctuations of the stripe-type with decreasing temperature in the paramagnetic phase.

We report nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies in the antiferromagnetic state of the quasi-two-dimensional (CuBr)LaNb2O7. The NMR spectra at zero magnetic field and 4.2 K indicate a unique Cu and Br sites with an internal field of 5.7 T (at Cu) and 16.4 T (at Br), confirming a magnetic order. For the large internal field at the Br sites to be compatible with the collinear antiferromagnetic order observed by neutron diffraction experiments (N. Oba et al., J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 75, (2006) 113601), the Br atoms must move significantly off the center of the square of the Cu sublattice so that the Br nuclei couple predominantly to two parallel Cu moments. While invalidating the frustrated J1-J2 model defined on a C4-symmetric square lattice, our results are compatible with the structural model proposed for (CuCl)LaNb2O7 by Yoshida et al. (J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 76 (2007) 104703).

A significant change of the NQR frequency with temperature was attributed to the variation of the quadrupole moment of Dy $4f$ electrons. A quantitative account was given by the mean field analysis of the quadrupole-quadrupole (Q-Q) interaction in the presence of the crystalline-electric-field splitting. The magnitude and the temperature dependence of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate was analyzed, including both the spin-spin and the Q-Q interactions. The results indicate that these two types of interaction contribute almost equally to the fluctuation of Dy magnetic moments.

The 59Co NMR spin echo experiment enabled clarification of the hyperfine field of Co at the interface between the ferromagnet and the molecules, which has not been investigated for molecular spintronics. An enhanced hyperfine field of the Co was observed in the rubrene-Co nano-composites, which may be related to the enhancement of the MR ratio. This study demonstrates the importance of microscopic investigation of the interface between molecules and ferromagnets that governs spin-dependent transport in molecular spin devices.

We present magnetic torque measurements on the Shastry-Sutherland quantum spin system SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$ in fields up to 31 T and temperatures down to 50 mK. A new quantum phase is observed in a 1 T field range above the 1/8 plateau, in agreement with recent NMR results. Since the presence of the DM coupling precludes the existence of a true Bose-Einstein condensation and the formation of a supersolid phase in SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$, the exact nature of the new phase in the vicinity of the plateau remains to be explained. Comparison between magnetization and torque data reveals a huge contribution of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction to the torque response. Finally, our measurements demonstrate the existence of a supercooling due to adiabatic magnetocaloric effects in pulsed field experiments.
