From Res-PES across the O K-edge and Cu L-edge, we identify the O 2p and Cu 3d partial density of states (PDOS) and their correlation satellites which originate in two-hole Auger final states. Using the Cini-Sawatzky method, analysis of the experimental O 2p PDOS shows an oxygen on-site Coulomb energy for PLCCO to be $U_{p}$ = 3.3$\pm$0.5 eV and for Bi2212, $U_{p}$ = 5.6$\pm$0.5 eV, while the copper on-site Coulomb correlation energy, $U_{d}$ = 6.5$\pm$0.5 eV for Bi2212. The expression for the Heisenberg exchange interaction $J$ in terms of the electronic parameters $U_{d}$, $U_{p}$, charge-transfer energy $Δ$ and Cu-O hop** $t_{pd}$ obtained from a simple Cu$_2$O cluster model is used to carry out an optimization analysis consistent with $J$ known from scattering experiments. The analysis also provides the effective one band on-site Coulomb correlation energy $\tilde{U}$ and the effective hop** $\tilde{t}$. PLCCO and Bi2212 are shown to exhibit very similar values of $\tilde{U}$/$\tilde{t}$ $\sim$9-10, confirming the strongly correlated nature of the singlet ground state in the effective one-band model for both the materials.

We combine time resolved pump-probe Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect and Photoelectron Spectroscopy experiments supported by theoretical analysis to determine the relaxation dynamics of delocalized electrons in half-metallic ferromagnetic manganite $La_{1-x}Sr_{x}MnO_{3}$. We observe that the half-metallic character of $La_{1-x}Sr_{x}MnO_{3}$ determines the timescale of both the electronic phase transition and the quenching of magnetization, revealing a quantum isolation of the spin system in double exchange ferromagnets extending up to hundreds of picoseconds. We demonstrate the use of time-resolved hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (TR-HAXPES) as a unique tool to single out the evolution of strongly correlated electronic states across a second-order phase transition in a complex material.

In this letter, we revealed the tensile-strain dependence of spin states, $i. e.$ the ratio of the high- and low-spin states, in epitaxial thin films and a bulk crystal of LaCoO$_3$ via resonant inelastic soft x-ray scattering. The tensile-strain as small as 1.0% was found to realize different spin states from that in the bulk.

While CaCr$_2$O$_4$ (one end member) exhibits a typical CT nature with strong covalent character, Na substitution causes a self-doped state with an oxygen hole. In NaCr$_2$O$_4$ (the other end member), positive CT and negative self-doped states coexist with equal weight. This unusual electronic state is in sharp contrast to the conventional mixed-valence description, in which the ground state can be described by the mixture of Cr$^{3+}$ ($3d^3$) and Cr$^{4+}$ ($3d^2$).

We report comprehensive studies of the crystallographic, magnetic, and thermal properties of a spinel-type magnetically frustrated compound, CoAl2O4, and a magnetically diluted system,Co1-xZnxAl2O4. These studies revealed the effects of dilution and disorder when the tetrahedral magnetic Co ion was replaced by the nonmagnetic Zn ion. Low-temperature anomalies were observed in magnetic susceptibility at x < 0.6. A multicritical point was apparent at T = 3.4 K and x = 0.12, where the antiferromagnetic, spin glass-like, and paramagnetic phases met. At that point, the quenched ferromagnetic component induced by a magnetic field during cooling was sharply enhanced and was observable below x = 0.6. Around x = 0.6, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat were described by temperature power laws, chi ~ C/T ~ T-d, in accord with the site percolation threshold of the diamond lattice. This behavior is reminiscent of a quantum critical singularity. We propose an x-temperature phase diagram in the range 0 < x < 1 for Co1-xZnxAl2O4. The transition temperature of CoAl2O4 determined from magnetic susceptibility measured under hydrostatic pressure increased with increasing pressure.

We propose a way to control the Josephson energy of a single Josephson junction embedded in one- dimensional superconducting metamaterial: an inhomogeneous superconducting loop, made out of a superconducting nanowire or a chain of Josephson junctions. The Josephson energy is renormalized by the electromagnetic modes propagating along the loop. We study the behaviour of the modes as well as of their frequency spectrum when the capacitance and the inductance along the loop are spatially modulated. We show that, depending on the amplitude of the modulation, the renormalized Josephson energy is either larger or smaller than the one found for a homogeneous loop. Using typical experimental parameters for Josepshon junction chains and superconducting nanowires, we conclude that this mode-engineering can be achieved with currently available metamaterials.

We have studied the electronic structure of bulk single crystals and epitaxial films of magnetite Fe$_3$O$_4$. Fe $2p$ core-level spectra show clear differences between hard x-ray (HAX-) and soft x-ray (SX-) photoemission spectroscopy (PES), indicative of surface effects. The bulk-sensitive spectra exhibit temperature ($T$)-dependent charge excitations across the Verwey transition at $T_V$=122 K, which is missing in the surface-sensitive spectra. An extended impurity Anderson model full-multiplet analysis reveals roles of the three distinct Fe-species (A-Fe$^{3+}$, B-Fe$^{2+}$, B-Fe$^{3+}$) below $T_V$ for the Fe $2p$ spectra, and its $T-$dependent evolution. The Fe $2p$ HAXPES spectra show a clear magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) in the metallic phase of magnetized 100-nm-thick films. The model calculations also reproduce the MCD and identify the magnetically distinct sites associated with the charge excitations. Valence band HAXPES shows finite density of states at $E_F$ for the polaronic metal with remnant order above $T_V$, and a clear gap formation below $T_V$. The results indicate that the Verwey transition is driven by changes in the strongly correlated and magnetically active B-Fe$^{2+}$ and B-Fe$^{3+}$ electronic states, consistent with resistivity and bulk-sensitive optical spectra.

We obtained expressions for the pumped charge for a ring of three quantum dots (QDs) by choosing the magnetic flux penetrating the ring as one of the control parameters. We found that the pumped charge shows a steplike behavior with respect to the variance of the flux. The value of the step heights is not universal but depends on the trajectory of the control parameters. We discuss the physical origin of this behavior on the basis of the Fano resonant condition of the ring.

We investigate the pumped charge and spin at zero-bias by adiabatic modulation of two control parameters using the full counting statistics with quantum master equation approach. First we study higher order effects of the pum** frequency in general Markov systems and show the equivalence between our approach and the real-time diagrammatic approach. An adiabatic modulation of the control parameters induces the Berry-Sinitsyn-Nemenman (BSN) phase. We show that the origin of the BSN phase is a non-adiabatic effect. The adiabatically pumped charge (spin) is given by a summation of (i) a time integral of the instantaneous steady charge (spin) current and (ii) a geometric surface integral of the BSN curvature, which results from the BSN phase. In quantum dots (QDs) weakly coupled to two leads, we show that (i) is usually dominant if the thermodynamic parameters are modulated although it is zero if the thermodynamic parameters are fixed to zero-bias. To observe the spin effects, we consider collinear magnetic fields, which relate to spins through the Zeeman effect, with different amplitudes applying to the QDs and the leads. For interacting one level QD, we calculate analytically the pumped charge and spin by modulating the magnetic fields and the coupling strengths to the leads in the weak and strong interacting limits. We show that the difference between these two limits appears through the averages of the numbers of the electron with up and down spin in the QD. For the quantum pump by the modulation of the magnetic fields of the QD and one lead, the energy-dependences of linewidth functions, which are usually neglected, are essential.

Valence instability is a key ingredient of the unusual properties of f electron materials, yet a clear understanding is lacking as it involves a complex interplay between f electrons and conduc- tion states. Here we propose a unified picture of pressure-induced valence transition in Sm and Yb monochalcogenides, considered as model system for mixed valent 4f-electron materials. Using high-resolution x-ray absorption spectroscopy, we show that the valence transition is driven by the promotion of a 4f electron specifically into the lowest unoccupied (LU) 5d t2g band. We demonstrate with a promotional model that the nature of the transition at low pressures is intimately related to the density of states of the LU band, while at high pressures it is governed by the hybridization strength. These results set a new standard for the generic understanding of valence fluctuations in f-electron materials.

The Kondo resonance peak with an extremely high Kondo temperature (above 2000 K) is clearly identified in the valence-band spectra. We show that while stoichiometric Fe2VAl is a non-magnetic semi-metal a 5% substitution on the Al-site with the 3d elements Fe and V atoms leads to a ferromagnetic ground state with a Curie temperature TC = 33+-3 K and a small ordered moment ms = 0.12 mB/Fe in Fe2VAl0.95. The reduced value of the ratio ms/mp = 0.08, where mp = 1.4 mB/Fe is the effective Curie-Weiss moment, together with the analysis of the magnetization data M(H,T), show magnetism is of itinerant nature. The specific heat shows an unusual temperature variation at low temperatures with an enhanced Sommerfeld coefficient, g = 12 mJK-2mol-1. The resistivity, r(T), is metallic and follows a power law behavior r(T) = r0+AT^n with n = 1.5 below TC. With applying pressure, TC decreases with the rate of (1/TC)(dTC /dP) = -0.061 GPa-1. We conclude substitution on the Al-site with Fe and V atoms results in itinerant ferromagnetism with a low carrier density.

We report on the electronic structure of the perovskite oxide CaCrO3 using valence-band, core-level, and Cr 2p - 3d resonant photoemission spectroscopy (PES). Despite its antiferromagnetic order, a clear Fermi edge characteristic of a metal with dominant Cr 3d character is observed in the valence band spectrum. The Cr 3d single particle density of states are spread over 2 eV, with the photoemission spectral weight distributed in two peaks centered at ~ 1.2 eV and 0.2 eV below EF, suggestive of the coherent and incoherent states resulting from strong electron-electron correlations. Resonant PES across the Cr 2p - 3d threshold identifies a 'two-hole' correlation satellite and yields an on-site Coulomb energy U ~4.8 eV. The metallic DOS at EF is also reflected through the presence of a well-screened feature at low binding energy side of the Cr 2p core-level spectrum. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at Cr L3,2 and O K edges exhibit small temperature dependent changes that point towards a small change in Cr-O hybridization. The multiplet splitting in Cr 2p core level spectrum as well as the spectral shape of the Cr XAS can be reproduced using cluster model calculations which favour a negative value for charge transfer energy between the Cr 3d and O 2p states. The overall results indicate that CaCrO3 is a strongly hybridized antiferromagnetic metal, lying in the regime intermediate to Mott-Hubbard and charge-transfer systems.

The electrical resistivity confirms an insulator above T_N (E_g ~ 70 meV) which becomes a disordered metal below T_N. The results indicate CrN transforms from a correlated insulator to an antiferromagnetic metal, coupled to the magneto-structural transition.

Abstract:
Soft-x-ray photoemission and absorption spectroscopies are employed to investigate the electronic structures of Sr_{1-x}Rh_{2}O_{4}. Similarly to the layered cobaltates such as Na_{1-x}CoO_{2}, a valence-band satellite feature (VBS) occurs at higher binding energy to the O 2p band. We find that the VBS resonates at the O 1s edge. Additionally, core absorption shows clear x dependence in the O 1s edge rather than in the Rh 3p edge. These results indicate that the holes in the initial state mainly have O 2p character presumably due to d-p rehybridizations affected by Sr^{2+} vacancy potentials. The resultant inhomogenous charge texture may have impact on the TE transport properties at low x.

The valence band spectra of these compounds also show Yb2+ peaks at the Fermi level. These observations establish an unambiguous case of a strong mixed valence at quantum criticality for the first time among heavy fermion systems, calling for a novel scheme for a quantum critical model beyond the conventional Doniach picture in beta-YbAlB4.

The out-of-plane and in-plane cuts of the 3-D electron- and hole-Fermi surfaces (FSs) are observed by energy- and angle- dependent photoemission measurements. The energy bands forming the electron FS suggest an $ω^2$ dependence of the imaginary part of the self-energy and a `correlation kink' at an energy scale of 0.25 eV. In contrast, the bands which form nesting character hole FSs do not show kinks and match local density approximation calculations. The results indicate a momentum-dependent mass renormalization, leading to electron-hole asymmetry in strongly correlated LaNiO$_3$.

The Magneli phase Ti4O7 exhibits two sharp jumps in resistivity with coupled structural transitions as a function of temperature at Tc1=142 K and Tc2=154 K. We have studied electronic structure changes across the two transitions using 7 eV laser, soft x-ray and hard x-ray (HX) photoemission spectroscopy (PES). Ti 2p-3d resonant PES and HX-PES show a clear metallic Fermi-edge and mixed valency above Tc2. The low temperature phase below Tc1 shows a clear insulating gap of 100 meV. The intermediate phase between Tc1 and Tc2 indicates a pseudogap coexisting with remnant coherent states. HX-PES and complementary calculations have confirmed the coherent screening in the strongly correlated intermediate phase. The results suggest existence of a highly anomalous state sandwiched between the mixed-valent Fermi liquid and charge ordered Mott-insulating phase in Ti4O7.

A comparison of the photoemission spectra with the energy loss functions in bulk and surface, obtained from optical reflectivity, enables us to distinguish between the energy loss satellite of Yb$^{2+}$ peak and Yb$^{3+}$ multiplet. The results clearly indicate a purely divalent Yb state except for the surface of YbS. We demonstrate that the present method is highly reliable in identifying the electronic structure and the mean valence in $f$-electron systems.

The spectral weight of the lowest energy state found to be enhanced in the bulk sensitive Ni 2p core-level PES. These results identify the lowest energy state in core-level and VB-PES as the Zhang-Rice doublet bound state, consistent with the spin-fermion model and recent ab initio calculation with dynamical mean-field theory (LDA + DMFT).

We identify the Cu$^{2+}$ derived (i) the Zhang-Rice singlet (ZRS) feature, (ii) the $d^{n+1}\underline{L}$ (ligand screened) feature, (iii) the $d^{n}$ satellite feature, as well as the hole-do** derived high binding energy feature in the main peak.
In Bi-based cuprates, intensities of the $d^{n}$ satellite features seem to be strongly enhanced compared to La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$. From x-ray photon energy dependent measurements, it is shown that the increased intensity in the satellite region is associated with Bi $4s$ core-level spectral intensity. The corrected $d^{n}$ satellite intensity is independent of the do** content or number of Cu-O layers. Our results suggest a correlation of the relative intensity of ZRS feature and hole-do** induced high binding energy spectral changes in the main peak with superconductivity.

The temperature ($T$) dependent metal-insulator transition (MIT) in VO$_2$ is investigated using bulk sensitive hard x-ray ($\sim$ 8 keV) valence band, core level, and V 2$p-3d$ resonant photoemission spectroscopy (PES). The valence band and core level spectra are compared with full-multiplet cluster model calculations including a coherent screening channel. Across the MIT, V 3$d$ spectral weight transfer from the coherent ($d^1\underbar{\it {C}}$ final) states at Fermi level to the incoherent ($d^{0}+d^1\underbar{\it {L}}$ final) states, corresponding to the lower Hubbard band, lead to gap-formation. The spectral shape changes in V 1$s$ and V 2$p$ core levels as well as the valence band are nicely reproduced from a cluster model calculations, providing electronic structure parameters. Resonant-PES finds that the $d^1\underbar{\it{L}}$ states resonate across the V 2$p-3d$ threshold in addition to the $d^{0}$ and $d^1\underbar{\it {C}}$ states. The results support a Mott-Hubbard transition picture for the first order MIT in VO$_2$.

The in situ high-resolution soft x-ray PES measurements on epitaxial thin films reveal the intrinsic electronic structure of LNO. We find a new sharp feature in the PES spectra crossing the Fermi level, which is derived from the correlated Ni 3$d$ $e_g$ electrons. This feature shows significant enhancement of spectral weight with decreasing temperature. From a detailed analysis of resistivity data, the enhancement of spectral weight is attributed to increasing electron correlations due to antiferromagnetic fluctuations.

An obvious question is whether the "stripes" are actually "checkers". Unfortunately, because NCCOC samples are small and LBCO samples do not cleave, neutron and STM measurements cannot be carried out on the same system. To determine the relationship between stripes and checkers we used resonant soft x-ray scattering (RSXS), previously applied to LBCO [P. Abbamonte \emph{et al.}, Nature Physics \textbf{1}, 155 (2005)], to study single crystals of NCCOC. No evidence was seen for a $4a \times 4a$ DOS modulation, indicating that the checkerboard effect is not directly related to the stripe modulation in LBCO. Our measurements suggest either glassy electronic behavior or the existence of a surface-nucleated phase transition in NCCOC [S. E. Brown \emph{et al.}, Phys. Rev. B \textbf{71}, 224512 (2005)].

The Ce 2p3d-RIXS spectra were measured directly in the bulk material as a function of pressure through the transition. The spectra were simulated within the Anderson impurity model. The occupation number nf was derived from the calculations in both gamma- and alpha-phases in the ground state along with the f doubleoccupancy. We find that the electronic structure changes result mainly from band formation of 4f electrons which concurs with reduced electron correlation and increased Kondo screening at high pressure.

While Ce 4$f$ partial DOS from band structure calculations are also consistent with the main Ce 4$f$ DOS, the importance of SIAM for core and valence spectra indicates Kondo semiconducting mixed valence for CeFe$_4$P$_{12}$, derived from strong hybridization between non-$f$ conduction and Ce 4$f$ DOS.

We report a theoretical study on resonant x-ray emission spectra (RXES) in the whole energy region of the Mn $L_{2,3}$ white lines for three prototypical Mn/Ag(001) systems: (i) a Mn impurity in Ag, (ii) an adsorbed Mn monolayer on Ag, and (iii) a thick Mn film. The calculated RXES spectra depend strongly on the excitation energy. At $L_3$ excitation, the spectra of all three systems are dominated by the elastic peak. For excitation energies around $L_2$, and between $L_3$ and $L_2$, however, most of the spectral weight comes from inelastic x-ray scattering. The line shape of these inelastic ``satellite'' structures changes considerably between the three considered Mn/Ag systems, a fact that may be attributed to changes in the bonding nature of the Mn-$d$ orbitals. The system-dependence of the RXES spectrum is thus found to be much stronger than that of the corresponding absorption spectrum. Our results suggest that RXES in the Mn $L_{2,3}$ region may be used as a sensitive probe of the local environment of Mn atoms.

The observed non-integral mean valencies of $\sim$2.35 $\pm$ 0.03 ($T$ = 120 K) and $\sim$2.70 $\pm$ 0.03 ($T$ = 40 K) indicate homogeneous mixed valence above and below $T$$_{v}$. The redistribution between Eu$^{2+}$$4f^7$+$[spd]^0$ and Eu$^{3+}$$4f^6$+$[spd]^1$ states is attributed to a hybridization change coupled to a Kondo-like volume collapse.

Hard X-ray Photoemission spectroscopy (PES) of copper core electronic states, with a probing depth of $\sim$60 Å, is used to show that the Zhang-Rice singlet feature is present in La$_2$CuO$_4$ but is absent in Nd$_2$CuO$_4$. Hole- and electron do** in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO) and Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ (NCCO) result in new well-screened features which are missing in soft X-ray PES. Impurity Anderson model calculations establish metallic screening as its origin, which is strongly suppressed within 15 $\textÅ$ of the surface. Complemented with X-ray absorption spectroscopy, the small chemical-potential shift in core levels ($\sim0.2$ eV) are shown to be consistent with modifications of valence and conduction band states spanning the band gap ($\sim1$ eV) upon hole- and electron-do** in LSCO and NCCO.

Abstract:
We report the bulk sensitive Hard X-ray (hv=5.95keV) core level photoemission spectroscopy to investigate the intrinsic electronic structure of strained (La0.85Ba0.15)MnO3 thin films. In a 20nm thick well-strained film with strongly enhanced ferromagnetism, a new sharp satellite peak appeared at the low energy site of the Mn 2p3/2 main peak, whereas a broader signal was observed for the unstrain…

In a 20nm thick well-strained film with strongly enhanced ferromagnetism, a new sharp satellite peak appeared at the low energy site of the Mn 2p3/2 main peak, whereas a broader signal was observed for the unstrained film with 300nm thickness. Cluster calculations revealed that the intensity corresponded to the density of the state at the Fermi level relating to the magnitude of the ferromagnetic order. The satellite intensity also agreed quantitatively with the square of the magnetization.

A systematic study of the changes in the $occupied$ and $unoccupied$ ligand (N) partial density of states (DOS) of the host lattice is carried out using N 1$s$ soft x-ray emission and absorption spectroscopy, respectively. X-ray absorption measurements confirm the wurtzite N 2$p$ DOS and substitutional do** of Cr into Ga-sites. Coupled changes in the $occupied$ and $unoccupied$ N 2$p$ character DOS of Ga$_{1-x}$Cr$_{x}$N identify states responsible for ferromagnetism consistent with band structure calculations.

Using hard x-ray (HX ; $hν$ = 5.95 keV) synchrotron photoemission spectroscopy (PES), we study the intrinsic electronic structure of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$ (LSMO) thin films. Take-off-angle dependent data indicate its bulk ($\ge$ 20 Å) character. The do** and temperature dependence track the ferromagnetism and metallicity of the LSMO series. Cluster model calculations including charge transfer from do** induced states show good agreement, confirming this picture of bulk properties reflected in Mn 2$p$ core-levels using HX-PES.

V$_{1.98}$Cr$_{0.02}$O$_{3}$ exhibits low binding energy "satellites" to the V $2p$ "main lines" in the metallic phase, which are suppressed in the antiferromagnetic insulator phase. In contrast, the Cu $2p$ spectra of Bi2212 do not show temperature dependent features, but a comparison with soft X-ray PES indicates a large increase in the $2p^5 3d^9$ "satellites" or $3d^9$ weight in the bulk. Cluster model calculations, including full multiplet structure and a screening channel derived from the coherent band at the Fermi energy, give very satisfactory agreement with experiments.

In contrast to 3-dimensional doped Co oxides, Co $\it{2p}$ core level spectra show well-separated Co$^{3+}$ and Co$^{4+}$ ions. Cluster calculations suggest low spin Co$^{3+}$ and Co$^{4+}$ character, and a moderate on-site Coulomb correlation energy U$_{dd}\sim$3-5.5 eV. Photon dependent valence band PES identifies Co $\it{3d}$ and O $\it{2p}$ derived states, in near agreement with band structure calculations.
