Free carrier spectral weight enhancement is measured directly for the first time, confirming theoretical expectations of chiral pum**. A departure from linear field-dependence of the Drude weight is observed at the highest fields in the quantum limit, providing direct evidence of field-dependent Fermi velocity of the chiral Landau level. Implications for the chiral magnetic effect in Weyl semimetals from the optical f-sum rule are discussed.

Abstract:
We report on temperature dependence of the infrared reflectivity spectra of a single crystalline herbertsmithite in two polarizations --- parallel and perpendicular to the kagome plane of Cu atoms. We observe anomalous broadening of the low frequency phonons possibly caused by fluctuations in the exotic dynamical magnetic order of the spin liquid.

Hot electron effects in graphene are significant because of graphene's small electronic heat capacity and weak electron-phonon coupling, yet the dynamics and cooling mechanisms of hot electrons in graphene are not completely understood. We describe a novel photocurrent spectroscopy method that uses the mixing of continuous-wave lasers in a graphene photothermal detector to measure the frequency dependence and nonlinearity of hot-electron cooling in graphene as a function of the carrier concentration and temperature. The method offers unparalleled sensitivity to the nonlinearity, and probes the ultrafast cooling of hot carriers with an optical fluence that is orders of magnitude smaller than in conventional time-domain methods, allowing for accurate characterization of electron-phonon cooling near charge neutrality. Our measurements reveal that near the charge neutral-point the nonlinear power dependence of the electron cooling is dominated by disorder-assisted collisions, while at higher carrier concentrations conventional momentum-conserving cooling prevails in the nonlinear dependence. The relative contribution of these competing mechanisms can be electrostatically tuned through the application of a gate voltage -- an effect that is unique to graphene.

Optical measurements and band structure calculations are reported on 3D Dirac materials. The electronic properties associated with the Dirac cone are identified in the reflectivity spectra of Cd$_3$As$_2$ and Na$_3$Bi single crystals. In Na$_3$Bi, the plasma edge is found to be strongly temperature dependent due to thermally excited free carriers in the Dirac cone. The thermal behavior provides an estimate of the Fermi level $E_F=25$ meV and the z-axis Fermi velocity $v_z = 0.3 \text{ eV} Å$ associated with the heavy bismuth Dirac band. At high energies above the $Γ$-point Lifshitz gap energy, a frequency and temperature independent $ε_2$ indicative of Dirac cone interband transitions translates into an ab-plane Fermi velocity of $3 \text{ eV} Å$. The observed number of IR phonons rules out the $\text{P}6_3\text{/mmc}$ space group symmetry but is consistent with the $\text{P}\bar{3}\text{c}1$ candidate symmetry. A plasmaron excitation is discovered near the plasmon energy that persists over a broad range of temperature. The optical signature of the large joint density of states arising from saddle points at $Γ$ is strongly suppressed in Na$_3$Bi consistent with band structure calculations that show the dipole transition matrix elements to be weak due to the very small s-orbital character of the Dirac bands. In Cd$_3$As$_2$, a distinctive peak in reflectivity due to the logarithmic divergence in $ε_1$ expected at the onset of Dirac cone interband transitions is identified. The center frequency of the peak shifts with temperature quantitatively consistent with a linear dispersion and a carrier density of $n=1.3\times10^{17}\text{ cm}^{-3}$. The peak width gives a measure of the Fermi velocity anisotropy of $10\%$, indicating a nearly spherical Fermi surface. The lineshape gives an upper bound estimate of 7 meV for the potential fluctuation energy scale.

Sub-wavelength graphene structures support localized plasmonic resonances in the terahertz and mid-infrared spectral regimes. The strong field confinement at the resonant frequency is predicted to significantly enhance the light-graphene interaction, which could enable nonlinear optics at low intensity in atomically thin, sub-wavelength devices. To date, the nonlinear response of graphene plasmons and their energy loss dynamics have not been experimentally studied. We measure and theoretically model the terahertz nonlinear response and energy relaxation dynamics of plasmons in graphene nanoribbons. We employ a THz pump-THz probe technique at the plasmon frequency and observe a strong saturation of plasmon absorption followed by a 10 ps relaxation time. The observed nonlinearity is enhanced by two orders of magnitude compared to unpatterned graphene with no plasmon resonance. We further present a thermal model for the nonlinear plasmonic absorption that supports the experimental results.

A Weyl semimetallic state with pairs of nondegenerate Dirac cones in three dimensions was recently predicted to occur in the antiferromagnetic state of the pyrochlore iridates. Here, we show that the THz optical conductivity and temperature dependence of free carriers in the pyrochlore Eu2Ir2O7 match the predictions for a Weyl semimetal and suggest novel Dirac liquid behavior. The interband optical conductivity vanishes continuously at low frequencies signifying a semimetal. The metal-insulator transition at T_N = 110 K is manifested in the Drude spectral weight, which is independent of temperature in the metallic phase, and which decreases smoothly in the ordered phase. The temperature dependence of the free carrier weight below T_N is in good agreement with theoretical predictions for a Dirac material. The data yield a Fermi velocity v_F=4x10^7 cm/s, a logarithmic renormalization scale Lambda_L=600 K, and require a Fermi temperature of T_F=100 K associated with residual unintentional do** to account for the low temperature optical response and dc resistivity.

Among its many outstanding properties, graphene supports terahertz surface plasma waves -- sub-wavelength charge density oscillations connected with electromagnetic fields that are tightly localized near the surface[1,2]. When these waves are confined to finite-sized graphene, plasmon resonances emerge that are characterized by alternating charge accumulation at the opposing edges of the graphene. The resonant frequency of such a structure depends on both the size and the surface charge density, and can be electrically tuned throughout the terahertz range by applying a gate voltage[3,4]. The promise of tunable graphene THz plasmonics has yet to be fulfilled, however, because most proposed optoelectronic devices including detectors, filters, and modulators[5-10] desire near total modulation of the absorption or transmission, and require electrical contacts to the graphene -- constraints that are difficult to meet using existing plasmonic structures. We report here a new class of plasmon resonance that occurs in a hybrid graphene-metal structure. The sub-wavelength metal contacts form a capacitive grid for accumulating charge, while the narrow interleaved graphene channels, to first order, serves as a tunable inductive medium, thereby forming a structure that is resonantly-matched to an incident terahertz wave. We experimentally demonstrate resonant absorption near the theoretical maximum in readily-available, large-area graphene, ideal for THz detectors and tunable absorbers. We further predict that the use of high mobility graphene will allow resonant THz transmission near 100%, realizing a tunable THz filter or modulator. The structure is strongly coupled to incident THz radiation, and solves a fundamental problem of how to incorporate a tunable plasmonic channel into a device with electrical contacts.

Terahertz (THz) radiation has uses from security to medicine; however, sensitive room-temperature detection of THz is notoriously difficult. The hot-electron photothermoelectric effect in graphene is a promising detection mechanism: photoexcited carriers rapidly thermalize due to strong electron-electron interactions, but lose energy to the lattice more slowly. The electron temperature gradient drives electron diffusion, and asymmetry due to local gating or dissimilar contact metals produces a net current via the thermoelectric effect. Here we demonstrate a graphene thermoelectric THz photodetector with sensitivity exceeding 10 V/W (700 V/W) at room temperature and noise equivalent power less than 1100 pW/Hz^1/2 (20 pW/Hz^1/2), referenced to the incident (absorbed) power. This implies a performance which is competitive with the best room-temperature THz detectors for an optimally coupled device, while time-resolved measurements indicate that our graphene detector is eight to nine orders of magnitude faster than those. A simple model of the response, including contact asymmetries (resistance, work function and Fermi-energy pinning) reproduces the qualitative features of the data, and indicates that orders-of-magnitude sensitivity improvements are possible.

A plateau is observed in the real part of the Faraday angle at an onset gate voltage corresponding to no band bending at the surface which persists into accumulation. The plateau is two orders of magnitude flatter than the step size expected from a single Landau Level in the low frequency limit, quantized in units of the fine structure constant. At 8 T, the plateau extends over a range of gate voltage that spans an electron density greater than 14 times the quantum flux density. Both the imaginary part of the Faraday angle and transmission measurements indicate dissipative off-axis and longitudinal conductivity channels associated with the plateau.

Gated terahertz cyclotron resonance measurements on epitaxial Bi2Se3 thin films capped with In2Se3 enable the first spectroscopic characterization of a single topological interface state from the vicinity of the Dirac point to above the conduction band edge. A precipitous drop in the scattering rate with Fermi energy is observed that is interpreted as the surface state decoupling from bulk states and evidence of a shift of the Dirac point towards mid-gap. Near the Dirac point, potential fluctuations of 50 meV are deduced from an observed loss of differential optical spectral weight near the Dirac point. Potential fluctuations are reduced by a factor of two at higher surface Fermi levels in the vicinity of the conduction band edge inferred from the width of the scattering rate step. The passivated topological interface state attains a high mobility of 3500 cm2/Vsec near the Dirac point.

Detection of infrared light is central to diverse applications in security, medicine, astronomy, materials science, and biology. Often different materials and detection mechanisms are employed to optimize performance in different spectral ranges. Graphene is a unique material with strong, nearly frequency-independent light-matter interaction from far infrared to ultraviolet, with potential for broadband photonics applications. Moreover, graphene's small electron-phonon coupling suggests that hot-electron effects may be exploited at relatively high temperatures for fast and highly sensitive detectors in which light energy heats only the small-specific-heat electronic system. Here we demonstrate such a hot-electron bolometer using bilayer graphene that is dual-gated to create a tunable bandgap and electron-temperature-dependent conductivity. The measured large electron-phonon heat resistance is in good agreement with theoretical estimates in magnitude and temperature dependence, and enables our graphene bolometer operating at a temperature of 5 K to have a low noise equivalent power (33 fW/Hz1/2). We employ a pump-probe technique to directly measure the intrinsic speed of our device, >1 GHz at 10 K.

The infrared Hall angle in optimally doped single crystal $\rm Bi_2 Sr_2 Ca Cu_2 O_{8+x}$ was measured from 3.05 to 21.75 meV as a continuous function of temperature from 25 to 300\,K. In the normal state, the temperature dependence of the real part of the cotangent of the infrared Hall angle obeys the same power law as dc measurements. The measured Hall frequency $\rm ω_H$ is significantly larger than the expected value based upon ARPES data analyzed in terms of the relaxation time approximation. This discrepancy as well as the temperature dependence of $\rm Re(\cot{θ_H})$ and $ω_H$ is well described by a Fermi liquid theory in which current vertex corrections produced by electron-magnon scattering are included.

In a search for such states, nominally undoped single crystals of Bi2Se3 with carrier densities approaching 10^16 cm^-3 and very high mobilities exceeding 2 m^2 V^-1 s^-1 have been studied. A comprehensive analysis of Shubnikov de Haas oscillations, Hall effect, and optical reflectivity indicates that the measured electrical transport can be attributed solely to bulk states, even at 50 mK at low Landau level filling factor, and in the quantum limit. The absence of a significant surface contribution to bulk conduction demonstrates that even in very clean samples, the surface mobility is lower than that of the bulk, despite its topological protection.

The triply degenerate Cr phonons soften in the paramagnetic phase as temperature is lowered below 100 K and then split into a singlet and doublet in the low T antiferromagnetic phase which is tetragonally distorted to relieve the geometric frustration in the pyrochlore lattice of Cr$^{3+}$ ions. The phonon splitting is inconsistent with the simple increase (decrease) in the force constants due to deceasing (increasing) bond lengths in the tetragonal phase. Rather they correspond to changes in the force constants due to the magnetic order in the antiferromagnetic state. The phonon splitting in this system is opposite of that observed earlier in ZnCr2O4 as predicted by theory. The magnitude of the splitting gives a measure of the spin phonon coupling strength which is smaller than in the case of ZnCr2O4.

These spectra, which occur only in the $e||a$ polarization, consist of two relatively narrow electromagnon features that onset at $T_{FE}=30$ K and a broad absorption band that persists to temperatures well above $T_N=47$ K. The observed excitations account for the step up of the static dielectric constant in the ferroelectric phase. The electromagnon at 80 cm$^{-1}$ is observed to be strongly coupled to the nearby lowest optical phonon which transfers more than 1/2 of its spectral weight to the magnon. We attribute the origin of the broad background absorption to the two magnon emission decay process of the phonon.

Most of the symmetry allowed IR modes polarized along the \textit{a} and \textit{b} crystal axes are observed and the behavior of several \textit{b} polarized phonons is correlated with the magnetic and ferroelectric transitions. A high frequency \textit{b} polarized phonon only Raman allowed in the paraelectric phase becomes IR active at the ferroelectric transition. The IR strength of this mode is proportional to the square of the ferroelectric order parameter and gives a sensitive measure of the symmetry lowering lattice distortions in the ferroelectric phase.

The spin-lattice coupling plays an important role in strongly frustrated magnets. In ZnCr$_2$O$_4$, an excellent realization of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the ``pyrochlore'' network, a lattice distortion relieves the geometrical frustration through a spin-Peierls-like phase transition at $T_c = 12.5$ K. Conversely, spin correlations strongly influence the elastic properties of a frustrated magnet. By using infrared spectroscopy and published data on magnetic specific heat, we demonstrate that the frequency of an optical phonon triplet in ZnCr$_2$O$_4$ tracks the nearest-neighbor spin correlations above $T_c$. The splitting of the phonon triplet below $T_c$ provides a way to measure of the spin-Peierls order parameter.

Numerous new modes were detected below the temperature T_c=34K of the phase transition into a charge ordered nonmagnetic state accompanied by a lattice dimerization. We analyse the Brillouin zone (BZ) folding due to lattice dimerization at T_c and show that some peculiarities of the low-temperature vibrational spectrum come from quadruplets folded from the BZ point (1/2, 1/2, 1/4). We discuss an earlier interpretation of the 70, 107, and 133cm-1 modes as magnetic bound states and propose the alternative interpretation as folded phonon modes strongly interacting with charge and spin excitations.

We report the far-infrared spectra of the molecular nanomagnet Mn_12-acetate (Mn_12) as a function of temperature (5-300 K) and magnetic field (0-17 T). The large number of observed vibrational modes is related to the low symmetry of the molecule, and they are grouped together in clusters. Analysis of the mode character based on molecular dynamics simulations and model compound studies shows that all vibrations are complex; motion from a majority of atoms in the molecule contribute to most modes. Three features involving intramolecular vibrations of the Mn_12 molecule centered at 284, 306 and 409 cm-1 show changes with applied magnetic field. The structure near 284 cm$^{-1}$ displays the largest deviation with field and is mainly intensity related. A comparison between the temperature dependent absorption difference spectra, the gradual low-temperature cluster framework distortion as assessed by neutron diffraction data, and field dependent absorption difference spectra suggests that this mode may involve Mn motion in the crown.

We found anomalies in the temperature dependence of the dielectric and the magnetic susceptibiliy of NaV_2O_5 in the microwave and far infrared frequency ranges. The anomalies occur at the phase transition temperature T_c, at which the spin gap opens. The real parts of the dielectric constants epsilon_a and epsilon_c decrease below T_c. The decrease of epsilon_a (except for the narrow region close to T_c) is proportional to the intensity of the x-ray reflection appearing at T_c. The dielectric constant anomaly can be explained by the zigzag charge ordering in the ab-plane appearing below T_c. The anomaly of the microwave magnetic losses is probably related to the coupling between the spin and charge degrees of freedom in vanadium ladders.

We have measured far infrared reflectance and transmittance spectra as well as Raman scattering spectra of α'-NaV2O5 single crystals for all the principal polarizations. The temperature range above the phase transition temperature T_c=35 K was investigated, mainly. On the basis of this experimental study and of the lattice dynamics calculations we conclude that the symmetry of NaV2O5 in the high temperature phase is described by the centrosymmetric D_{2h}^{13} space group. The assignment of the observed phonons is given. Values of dielectric constants are obtained from the infrared data. Asymmetric shapes of several infrared lines as well as higher order infrared vibrational spectra are discussed. The crystal field energy levels of the 3d electron localized at the V^{4+} site have been calculated in the framework of the exchange charge model using the values of effective charges obtained from the lattice dynamics calculations. According to the results of these calculations, the earlier observed broad optical bands in the region of 1 eV can be interpreted as phonon assisted d-d transitions.

The change in the shape of the spectral lines at the spin-Peierls transition is recorded for the first time. A contour characteristic of a Fano resonance is observed above the transition temperature Tsp and the standard symmetric contour is observed below Tsp. We attribute this effect to the opening of a gap in the magnetic-excitation spectrum at the spin-Peierls transition.

In addition to the phonon lines, a broad band was observed in the c(aa)c Raman spectrum and in the E||a FIR transmission spectrum. A possible origin of these bands is discussed. The absorption band at 10000 cm-1 1.25 eV is attributed to vanadium d-d electronic transitions while the absorption edge above 3 eV is supposed to correspond to the onset of charge-transfer transitions.
