Here, we discuss the comparability of data acquisitioned with the Modulation of IntEnsity with Zero Effort data, a neutron spin-echo (NSE) technique to neutron Time-of-Flight (ToF) spectroscopy data. As a NSE technique MIEZE records the intermediate scattering function $\mathcal{I}(Q, τ)$ making it necessary to perform a Fourier transform to directly compare it to $S(Q, E)$, measured by ToF spectroscopy. Transforming either data set into the complementary parameter space requires detailed knowledge of detector efficiency, instrumental resolution, and background. We discuss these aspects by comparing measurements on pure water performed on the spectrometers RESEDA and TOFTOF under the same experimental conditions. Additionally, we discuss the data evaluation of spin-echo data beyond the SE approximation, which limits these techniques to small energy transfers.

Recent progress in neutron spin-echo spectroscopy by means of longitudinal Modulation of IntEnsity with Zero Effort (MIEZE) is reviewed. Key technical characteristics are summarized which highlight that the parameter range accessible in momentum and energy, as well as its limitations, are extremely well understood and controlled. Typical experimental data comprising quasi-elastic and inelastic scattering are presented, featuring magneto-elastic coupling and crystal field excitations in Ho2Ti2O7, the skyrmion lattice to paramagnetic transition under applied magnetic field in MnSi, ferromagnetic criticality and spin waves in Fe. In addition bench marking studies of the molecular dynamics in H2O are reported. Taken together, the advantages of MIEZE spectroscopy in studies at small and intermediate momentum transfers comprise an exceptionally wide dynamic range of over seven orders of magnitude, the capability to perform straight forward studies on depolarizing samples or under depolarizing sample environments, as well as on incoherently scattering materials.

The instrumental layout and technical realisation of the neutron resonant spin echo (NRSE) spectrometer RESEDA at the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum (MLZ) in Garching, Germany, is presented. RESEDA is based on a longitudinal field configuration, boosting both dynamic range and maximum resolution of the spectrometer compared to the conventional transverse layout. The resonant neutron spin echo technique enables the realisation of two complementary implementations: A longitudinal NRSE (LNRSE) option comparable to the classical neutron spin echo (NSE) method for highest energy resolution and large momentum transfers as well as a Modulation of Intensity with Zero Effort (MIEZE) option for depolarising samples or sample environments such as high magnetic fields, and strong incoherent scattering samples. With their outstanding dynamic range, exceeding nominally seven orders of magnitude, both options cover new fields for ultra-high resolution neutron spectroscopy in hard and soft condensed matter systems. In this paper the concept of RESEDA as well as the technical realisation along with reference measurements are reported.

We report a method to determine the phase and amplitude of sinusoidally modulated event rates, binned into four bins per oscillation, based on data generated at the resonant neutron spin-echo spectrometer RESEDA. The presented algorithm relies on a reconstruction of the unknown parameters. It omits a calculation intensive fitting procedure and avoids contrast reduction due to averaging effects. It allows the current data acquisition bottleneck at RESEDA to be relaxed by a factor of four and thus increases the potential time resolution of the detector by the same factor. We explain the approach in detail and compare it to the established fitting procedures of time series having four and 16 time bins per oscillation. In addition we present the empirical estimates of the errors of the three methods and compare them to each other. We show that the reconstruction is unbiased, asymptotic, and efficient for estimating the phase. Reconstructing the contrast increases the error bars by roughly 10% as compared to fitting 16 time binned oscillations. Finally, we give heuristic, analytical equations to estimate the error for phase and contrast as a function of their initial values and counting statistics.

For a tailored functionalization of cellulose based papers, the interaction between paper fibers and functional additives have to be understood. Planar cellulose surfaces present a suitable model system for studying the binding of additives. In this work, polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs) as model surfaces are prepared by alternating dip coating of the negatively charged cellulose derivate carboxymethyl cellulose and a polycation, either PDADMAC or chitosan. The varied parameters of the PEM formation are the polyelectrolyte concentrations and pH (pH=2-6). Both PEM systems exhibit an exponential growth, which reveals a high mobility of the polyelectrolytes (PEs). The pH-tunable charge density leads to PEMs with different surface topographies. QCM-D experiments reveal pronounced viscoelastic properties of the PEMs. Ellipsometry and atomic force microscopy measurements show that the strong and highly charged polycation PDADMAC leads to the formation of smooth PEMs. The weak polycation chitosan results in cellulose model surfaces with higher film thicknesses and a tunable roughness. The PEMs prepared from both polycations exhibit a high water uptake when exposed to a humid environment. The resulting PEMs are suitable water-stable but water swellable model surfaces with a controllable roughness and topography.

The generation of high frequency oscillatory magnetic fields represents a fundamental component underlying the successful implementation of neutron resonant spin-echo spectrometers, a class of instrumentation critical for the high-resolution extraction of dynamical excitations (structural and magnetic) in materials. In this paper, the setup of the resonant circuits at the longitudinal resonant spin-echo spectrometer RESEDA is described in comprehensive technical detail. We demonstrate that these circuits are capable of functioning at frequencies up to 3.6 MHz and over a broad bandwidth down to 35 kHz using a combination of signal generators, amplifiers, impedance matching transformers, and a carefully designed cascade of tunable capacitors and customized coils.

We report grazing incidence small angle neutron scattering (GISANS) and complementary off-specular neutron reflectometry (OSR) of the magnetic order in a single-crystalline epitaxial MnSi film on Si(111) in the thick film limit. Providing a means of direct reciprocal space map**, GISANS and OSR reveal a magnetic modulation perpendicular to the films under magnetic fields parallel and perpendicular to the film, where additional polarized neutron reflectometry (PNR) and magnetization measurements are in excellent agreement with the literature. Regardless of field orientation, our data does not suggest the presence of more complex spin textures, notably the formation of skyrmions. This observation establishes a distinct difference with bulk samples of MnSi of similar thickness under perpendicular field, in which a skyrmion lattice dominates the phase diagram. Extended x-ray absorption fine structure measurements suggest that small shifts of the Si positions within the unstrained unit cell control the magnetic state, representing the main difference between the films and thin bulk samples.

We report an investigation of the structural and electronic properties of hybrid superconductor/ferromagnet (S/F) bilayers of composition Nb/Cu$_{60}$Ni$_{40}$ prepared by magnetron sputtering. X-ray and neutron reflectometry show that both the overall interfacial roughness and vertical correlations of the roughness of different interfaces are lower for heterostructures deposited on Al$_2$O$_3$(1$\bar{1}$02) substrates than for those deposited on Si(111). Mutual inductance experiments were then used to study the influence of the interfacial roughness on the superconducting transition temperature, $T_C$. These measurements revealed a $\sim$ 4% higher $T_C$ in heterostructures deposited on Al$_2$O$_3$, compared to those on Si. We attribute this effect to a higher mean-free path of electrons in the S layer, caused by a suppression of diffusive scattering at the interfaces. However, the dependence of the $T_C$ on the thickness of the ferromagnetic layer is not significantly different in the two systems, indicating a weak influence of the interfacial roughness on the transparency for Cooper pairs.

Depth-sensitive magnetic, structural and chemical characterization is important in the understanding and optimization of novel physical phenomena emerging at interfaces of transition metal oxide heterostructures. In a simultaneous approach we have used polarized neutron and resonant X-ray reflectometry to determine the magnetic profile across atomically sharp interfaces of ferromagnetic La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 / multiferroic BiFeO3 bi-layers with sub-nanometer resolution. In particular, the X-ray resonant magnetic reflectivity measurements at the Fe and Mn resonance edges allowed us to determine the element specific depth profile of the ferromagnetic moments in both the La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 and BiFeO3 layers. Our measurements indicate a magnetically diluted interface layer within the La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 layer, in contrast to previous observations on inversely deposited layers. Additional resonant X-ray reflection measurements indicate a region of an altered Mn- and O-content at the interface, with a thickness matching that of the magnetic diluted layer, as origin of the reduction of the magnetic moment.

Epitaxial La1.85Sr0.15CuO4/La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 superlattices on (001)-oriented LaSrAlO4 substrates have been grown with pulsed laser deposition technique. Their structural, magnetic and superconducting properties have been determined with in-situ reflection high energy electron diffraction, x-ray diffraction, specular neutron reflectometry, scanning transmission electron microscopy, electric transport, and magnetization measurements. We find that despite the large mismatch between the in-plane lattice parameters of LSCO and LCMO these superlattices can be grown epitaxially and with a high crystalline quality. While the first LSCO layer remains clamped to the LSAO substrate, a sizeable strain relaxation occurs already in the first LCMO layer. The following LSCO and LCMO layers adopt a nearly balanced state in which the tensile and compressive strain effects yield alternating in-plane lattice parameters with an almost constant average value. No major defects are observed in the LSCO layers, while a significant number of vertical antiphase boundaries are found in the LCMO layers. The LSCO layers remain superconducting with a relatively high superconducting onset temperature of about 36 K. The macroscopic superconducting response is also evident in the magnetization data due to a weak diamagnetic signal below 10 K for H || ab and a sizeable paramagnetic shift for H || c that can be explained in terms of a vortex-pinning-induced flux compression. The LCMO layers maintain a strongly ferromagnetic state with a Curie temperature of about 190 K and a large low-temperature saturation moment of about 3.5(1) muB. These results suggest that the LSCO/LCMO superlattices can be used to study the interaction between the antagonistic ferromagnetic and superconducting orders and, in combination with previous studies on YBCO/LCMO superlattices, may allow one to identify the relevant mechanisms.
