With the growing number of qubits of quantum information processing devices, the task of fully characterizing these processors becomes increasingly unfeasible. From a practical perspective, one wants to find possible errors in the functioning of the device as quickly as possible, or otherwise establish its correct functioning with high confidence. In response to these challenges, we propose a pattern-based approach inspired by classical memory testing algorithms to evaluate the functionality of a quantum memory, based on plausible failure mechanisms. We demonstrate the method's capability to extract pattern dependencies of important qubit characteristics, such as $T_1$ and $T_2$ times, and to identify and analyze interactions between adjacent qubits. Additionally, our approach enables the detection of different types of crosstalk effects and of signatures indicating non-Markovian dynamics in individual qubits.

World-wide efforts aim at the realization of advanced quantum simulators and processors. However, despite the development of intricate hardware and pulse control systems, it may still not be generally known which effective quantum dynamics, or channels, are implemented on these devices. To systematically infer those, we propose a neural-network algorithm approximating generic discrete-time dynamics through the repeated action of an effective quantum channel. We test our approach considering time-periodic Lindblad dynamics as well as non-unitary subsystem dynamics in many-body unitary circuits. Moreover, we exploit it to investigate cross-talk effects on the ibmq_ehningen quantum processor, which showcases our method as a practically applicable tool for inferring quantum channels when the exact nature of the underlying dynamics on the physical device is not known a priori. While the present approach is tailored for learning Markovian dynamics, we discuss how it can be adapted to also capture generic non-Markovian discrete-time evolutions.

Carreras, Dobson and colleagues have studied empirical data on the sizes of the blackouts in real grids and modeled them by computer simulations using the direct current approximation. They have found that the resulting blackout sizes are distributed as a power law and suggested that this is because the grids are driven to the self-organized critical state. In contrast, more recent studies found that the distribution of cascades is bimodal as in a first order phase transition, resulting in either a very small blackout or a very large blackout, engulfing a finite fraction of the system. Here we reconcile the two approaches and investigate how the distribution of the blackouts change with model parameters, including the tolerance criteria and the dynamic rules of failure of the overloaded lines during the cascade. In addition, we study the same problem for the Motter and Lai model and find similar results, suggesting that the physical laws of flow on the network are not as important as network topology, overload conditions, and dynamic rules of failure.

We report a large persistent photoconductivity (PPC) in oxygen reduced PLD grown YBa2Cu3O7-δ/La2/3Ca1/3MnO3-y (YBCO/LCMO) superlattices scaling with the oxygen deficiency and being similar to that observed in single layer YBa2Cu3O7-δ films. These results contradict previous observations where in sputtered bilayer samples only a transient photoconductivity (TPC) was found. We argue that the PPC effect in superlattices is caused by the PPC effect due to the YBa2Cu3O7-x layers with limited charge transfer to La2/3Ca1/3MnO3-y. The discrepancy arises from the different permeability of charges across the interface and shed light on the sensitivity of oxide interface properties on details of their preparation.

The electron-phonon interaction is of central importance for the electrical and thermal properties of solids, and its influence on superconductivity, colossal magnetoresistance, and other many-body phenomena in correlated-electron materials is currently the subject of intense research. However, the non-local nature of the interactions between valence electrons and lattice ions, often compounded by a plethora of vibrational modes, present formidable challenges for attempts to experimentally control and theoretically describe the physical properties of complex materials. Here we report a Raman scattering study of the lattice dynamics in superlattices of the high-temperature superconductor $\bf YBa_2 Cu_3 O_7$ and the colossal-magnetoresistance compound $\bf La_{2/3}Ca_{1/3}MnO_{3}$ that suggests a new approach to this problem. We find that a rotational mode of the MnO$_6$ octahedra in $\bf La_{2/3}Ca_{1/3}MnO_{3}$ experiences pronounced superconductivity-induced lineshape anomalies, which scale linearly with the thickness of the $\bf YBa_2 Cu_3 O_7$ layers over a remarkably long range of several tens of nanometers. The transfer of the electron-phonon coupling between superlattice layers can be understood as a consequence of long-range Coulomb forces in conjunction with an orbital reconstruction at the interface. The superlattice geometry thus provides new opportunities for controlled modification of the electron-phonon interaction in complex materials.

The Manganese magnetization profile across the FM layer has been determined with high spatial resolution at low temperatures by X-ray resonant magnetic reflectivity (XRMR). It is found that not only the adjacent superconductor but also the substrate underneath influences the magnetization of the LCMO film at the interfaces at low temperatures. Both effects can be investigated individually by XRMR.

The saturation magnetization is about half of that in bulk La(2/3)Ca(1/3)MnO(3). A massive reduction of the magnetization previously inferred from sputter-deposited La(2/3)Ca(1/3)MnO(3)-YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7) heterostructures can be ruled out. HRTEM image analysis, combined with image simulation and a focus series reconstruction, revealed atomically sharp epitaxial structures with stacking sequences -(La,Ca)O-CuO2- and -BaO-MnO- at the top and bottom interface.

The results show a drop in the ab-plane resistance Rab (T) in the case of injection along the c-axis that is discussed to be related to the opening of a pseudogap.

Using the HM--CMR layer as an electrode for spin polarized electrons, we discuss the role of spin polarized self injection into the HTSC layer. The experimental results are in good agreement with a presented theoretical estimation, where the spin diffusion length $ξ_{\mathrm {FM}}$ is found to be in the range of $ξ_{\mathrm{FM}} \approx$ 10 nm.

We report on a systematic study of strain effects on the transport properties and the ferromagnetic transition temperature $T_{c}$ of high-quality La$_{0.9}$Sr$_{0.1}$MnO$_{3}$ thin films epitaxially grown on (100) SrTiO$_{3}$ substrates. Both the magnetization and the resistivity are critically dependent on the film thickness. $T_{c}$ is enhanced with decreasing the film thickness due to the compressive stain produced by lattice mismatch. The resistivity above 165 K of the films with various thicknesses is consistent with small polaronic hop** conductivity. The polaronic formation energy $E_{P}$ is reduced with the decrease of film thickness. We found that the strain dependence of $T_{c}$ mainly results from the strain-induced electron-phonon coupling. The strain effect on $E_{P}$ is in good agreement with the theoretical predictions.
