Optical anisotropy and nonlinearity are two tantalizingly important and enticing properties of an optical crystal. Combining these two features will have a miraculous effect. The up conversion can extend solid state laser sources to the ultraviolet and deep ultraviolet (DUV) ranges through harmonic generation and for down conversion needed for quantum information technology, but only a few suitable materials are known as the medium because of the combination of properties that are required. These include suitable band gaps, moderate optical anisotropy for phase matching and strong nonlinear optical (NLO) response. Fluorooxoborates are a new ideal platform for this effect in DUV. Here we demonstrate that fluorooxoborate is the optimal framework for DUV NLO material and show that the significance of the incorporation of fluorine in borates. The NLO performance of fluorooxoborates is strongly improved in terms of local crystal structure and distribution of electronic states. Importantly, the role of fluorine is to control the structure, while maintaining high band gaps but does not directly provide large contributions to birefringence and the second harmonic generation as the conventional assumptions. This is a consequence of the microscopic electron distribution and the energy position of the fluorine states well below the valence band maxima. Based on our understandings, we constructed two artificial structure and they all behave as anticipated.

Half-Heusler (HH) phases have garnered much attention as thermally stable and non-toxic thermoelectric materials for power conversion. The most studied alloys to date utilize Hf, Zr, and Ti as the base components. These alloys can achieve a moderate dimensionless figure of merit, ZT, near 1. Recent studies have advanced the thermoelectric performance of HH alloys by employing nanostructures and novel compositions to achieve larger ZT, reaching as high as 1.5. Herein, we report that traditional alloying techniques applied to the conventional HfZr-based half-Heusler alloys can also lead to exceptional ZT. Specifically, we present the well-studied p-type Hf0.3Zr0.7CoSn0.3Sb0.7, previously reported to have a ZT~0.8, resonantly doped with less than 1 at. % metallic Al on the Sn/Sb site, touting a remarkable ZT near 1.5 at 980 K. This is achieved through a significant increase in power factor, by ~65%, and a notable but smaller decrease in thermal conductivity, by ~13%, at high temperatures. These favorable thermoelectric properties are discussed in terms of a local anomaly in the density of states near the Fermi energy designed to enhance the Seebeck coefficient, as revealed by first-principles calculations, as well as the emergence of a highly heterogeneous grain structure that can scatter phonons across different length scales, effectively suppressing the thermal conductivity. Consequently, the effective mass is significantly enhanced from ~ 7 to 10me within a single parabolic band model, consistent with the result from first-principles calculations. The discovery of high ZT in a commonly studied half-Heusler alloy through a conventional and non-complex approach opens a new path for further discoveries in similar types of alloys. Furthermore, it is reasonable to believe that the study will reinvigorate effort in exploring high thermoelectric performance in conventional alloy systems.

Majorana zero modes form as intrinsic defects in an odd-orbital one-dimensional superconductor thus motivating the search for such materials in the pursuit of Majorana physics. Here, we present combined experimental results and first principles calculations which suggest that quasi-one-dimensional K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ may be such a superconductor. Using inelastic neutron scattering we probe the dynamic spin-susceptibilities of K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ and K$_2$Mo$_3$As$_3$ and show the presence of antiferromagnetic spin-fluctuations in both compounds. Below the superconducting transition, these fluctuations gap in K$_2$Mo$_3$As$_3$ but not in K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$. Using first principles calculations, we show that these fluctuations likely arise from nesting on one dimensional features of the Fermi surface. Considering these results we propose that while K$_2$Mo$_3$As$_3$ is a conventional superconductor, K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ is likely a spin-triplet, and consequently, topological superconductor.

The emergence of unconventional superconductivity in proximity to intertwined electronic orders is especially relevant in the case of iron-based superconductors. Such order consists of an electronic nematic order and a spin density wave in these systems. BaNi$_2$As$_2$, like its well-known iron-based analog BaFe$_2$As$_2$, also hosts a symmetry-breaking structural transition that is coupled to a unidirectional charge density wave (CDW), providing a novel platform to study intertwined orders. Here, through a systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study combined with a detwinning $B_1g$ uniaxial strain, we identify distinct spectral evidence of band evolution due to the structural transition as well as CDW-induced band folding. In contrast to the nematicity and spin density wave in BaFe$_2$As$_2$, the structural and CDW order parameters in BaNi$_2$As$_2$ are observed to be strongly coupled and do not separate in the presence of uniaxial strain. Our measurements point to a likely lattice origin of the CDW in BaNi$_2$As$_2$.

Ternary iron nitrides are of considerable interest due to their diverse magnetic properties. We find, based on first principles calculations, that the relatively minor structural distortion from the cubic antiperovskite structure in Fe$_3$GeN leads to unusual magnetic behavior. In particular, there is a separation into Fe sites with very different magnetic behaviors, specifically a site with Fe atoms having a stable local moment and a site where the Fe shows characteristics of much more itinerant behavior. This shows a remarkable flexibility of the Fe magnetic behavior in these nitrides and points towards the possibility of systems where minor structural and chemical changes can lead to dramatic changes in magnetic properties. The results suggest that, analogously to oxide perovskite materials, modulation of magnetic properties via chemical or strain control of octahedral rotation may be feasible. This may then lead to approaches for tuning magnetism to realize properties of interest, for example tuning magnetic transitions to quantum critical regimes or to proximity to metamagnetic transitions of interest for devices.

We show based on first principles calculations that in fact there are two distinct competing structures. These structures are very different from electronic, transport and bonding points of view but are close in energy. These arise due to complex As bonding patterns and drive distortions of the Ni layers. This is supported by photoemission experiments. This leads to an interplay of electronic and structural behavior including induced anisotropic of the electronic transport. The competition between these distortions is associated with the complex behavior observed in BaNi2As2 samples.

High-quality single crystals of KCo$_2$As$_2$ with the body-centered tetragonal ThCr$_2$Si$_2$ structure were grown using KAs self flux. Structural, magnetic, thermal, and electrical transport were investigated. No clear evidence for any phase transitions was found in the temperature range 2 to 300 K. The in-plane electrical resistivity $ρ$ versus temperature $T$ is highly unusual, showing a $T^4$ behavior below 30 K and an anomalous positive curvature up to 300 K which is different from the linear behavior expected from the Bloch-Grüneisen theory for electron scattering by acoustic phonons. This positive curvature has been previously observed in the in-plane resistivity of high-conductivity layered delafossites such as PdCoO$_2$ and PtCoO$_2$. The in-plane $ρ(T\to0) = 0.36~μΩ$ cm of KCo$_2$As$_2$ is exceptionally small for this class of compounds. The material also exhibits a nearly linear magnetoresistance at low $T$ which attains a value of about 40% at $T=2$K and magnetic field $H= 80$ kOe. The magnetic susceptibility $χ$ of KCo$_2$As$_2$ is isotropic and about an order of magnitude smaller than the values for the related compounds SrCo$_2$As$_2$ and BaCo$_2$As$_2$. The $χ$ increases above 100 K which is found from our first-principles calculations to arise from a sharp peak in the electronic density of states just above the Fermi energy $E_{\rm F}$. Heat capacity $C_{\rm p}(T)$ data at low $T$ yield an electronic density of states $N(E_{\rm F})$ that is about 36% larger than predicted by the first-principles theory. The $C_{\rm p}(T)$ data near room temperature suggest the presence of excited optic vibration modes which may also be the source of the positive curvature in $ρ(T)$. Our results show that KCo$_2$As$_2$ provides a new avenue for investigating the physics of high-purity metals.

Elucidating the polymorphism of transition metal dichalcogenide layers and the interplay between structure and properties is a key challenge for the application of these materials. We identify a novel low energy metastable phase of monolayer VSe$_2$ and elucidate its magnetic and electronic properties. This structure is distinct from the previously identified charge density wave (CDW) phase. However, while having rather distinct properties it is very close in energy to the CDW phase and is likely to be realized in experiments. Importantly, local bonding instabilities, as characterized by reconstruction of the electronic structure over a wide energy range, are important for this distortion, which includes both V off-centering in the octahedral coordination cages and a partial disproportionation into two distinct types of V. The phase does not have a ferromagnetic ground state. The results show that the physics of 1$T$ VSe$_2$ are richer than previously known with an interplay of Fermi surface instabilities and local bonding effects.

Topological superconductors, characterized by topologically nontrivial states residing in a superconducting gap, are a recently discovered class of materials having Majorana Fermions. The interplay of superconductivity and topological states give rise to opportunities for achieving such topological superconductors in condensed matter systems. Up to now, several single-material topological superconductors in this form have been theoretically predicted and experimentally confirmed. Here, using the first-principles calculations, we study the superconducting single-layer $β$-Bi$_{2}$Pd. The electronic density of states near Fermi level of this monolayer are dominated by the Bi-p and Pd-d orbitals, forming a two-band Fermi surface with multi-class sheets. The presence of soft phonon bands, in cooperation with the electron susceptibility, account for electron-phonon superconductivity of single-layer $β$-Bi$_{2}$Pd. With the centrosymmetric structure, single-layer $β$-Bi$_{2}$Pd possesses a continuous gap over the whole Brillouin zone and topological Dirac-like states at its one-dimensional boundary. The present findings would lead to the expectation of one-dimensional topological superconductivity and Majorana bound states in monolayer candidate of $β$-Bi$_{2}$Pd with intrinsic full-gap superconductivity.

These predict a ferromagnetic ground state in contrast to the experimentally observed paramagnetism, raising the question of competing magnetic states and associated fluctuations that may suppress magnetic order. We did a search to identify such low energy antiferromagnetically ordered metastable states. We find that the lowest energy antiferromagnetic state has a striped order. This corresponds to the E-type order that has been shown to be induced by Mn alloying. We also note significant transport anisotropy in this E-type ordered state. Several recent studies have shown that SCAN, a functional belonging to the meta-generalized gradient approximation (MGGA) family, leads to significantly overestimated magnetic moments in itinerant ferromagnetic metals. However, this behavior is not inherent to the MGGA level of approximation since TPSS, for instance, does not lead to such severe overestimations. In order to provide a broader view of the accuracy of MGGA functionals for magnetism, we extend the assessment to more functionals, but also to antiferromagnetic solids. The results show that to describe magnetism there is overall no real advantage in using a MGGA functional compared to GGAs. For both types of approximation, an improvement in ferromagnetic metals is necessarily accompanied by a deterioration (underestimation) in antiferromagnetic insulators, and vice-versa. We also provide some analysis in order to understand in more detail the relation between the mathematical form of the functionals and the results.

We find that chemical do** brings strong screening effects to ionized impurities, grain boundary, and polar optical phonon scattering, but has negligible influence on lattice thermal conductivity. Furthermore, it is possible to establish a carrier scattering phase diagram, which can be used to select reasonable strategies for optimization of the thermoelectric performance.

The factors that affect the thermal conductivity of semiconductors is a topic of great scientific interest, especially in relation to thermoelectrics. Key developments have been the concept of the phonon-glass-electron-crystal (PGEC) and the related idea of rattling to achieve this. We use first principles phonon and thermal conductivity calculations in order to explore the concept of rattling for stoichiometric ordered half-Heusler compounds. These compounds can be regarded as filled zinc blende materials, and the filling atom could be viewed as a rattler if it is weakly bound. We use two simple metrics, one related to the frequency and the other to bond frustration and anharmonicity. We find that both measures correlate with thermal conductivity. This suggests that both may be useful in screening materials for low thermal conductivity.

Here we investigate the Co and Ni selenite and tellurite compounds, CoSeO$_3$, CoTeO$_3$, NiSeO$_3$ and NiTeO$_3$ using first principles calculations. We find an interplay of crystal field and Jahn-Teller distortions that underpin the electronic and magnetic properties. While all compounds are predicted to show an insulating G-type antiferromagnetic ground state, there is a considerable difference in the anisotropy of the exchange interactions between the Ni and Co compounds. This is related to the Jahn-Teller distortion. Finally, we observe that these four compounds show characteristics generally associated with Mott insulators, even when described at the level of standard density functional theory. These are then dense bulk band or Slater, Mott-type insulators.

We present a detailed analysis of the structure dependence of the lattice thermal conductivity of SrTiO3. We have used both ab initio Molecular Dynamic simulations and Density Functional Theory calculations to decouple the effect of different structural distortions on the thermal conductivity. We have identified two main mechanisms for tuning the thermal conductivity when a distortion is applied. First, the modification of the acoustic-modes energy dispersion when a change in the lattice parameters is imposed and second, the low energy polar modes. In particular and counterintuitively, we have found that an increase in the angle of the oxygen octahedral rotations increases the thermal conductivity due to its coupling to these polar modes.

Dielectric screening plays an important role in reducing the strength of carrier scattering and trap** by point defects for many semiconductors such as the halide perovskite solar materials. However, it was rarely considered as a screen to find new electronic semiconductors. We performed a material search study using the dielectric properties as a screen to identify potential electronic materials in the class of metal-pnictide ternary sulfosalts, containing Bi or Sb. These salts are basically ionic due to the electronegativity difference between the S and both the metal and pnictogen elements. However, we do find significant cross-gap hybridization between the S p-derived valence bands and pnictogen p-derived conduction bands in many of the materials. This leads to enhanced Born effective charges, and in several cases, highly enhanced dielectric constants. We find a chemical rule for high dielectric constants in terms of the bond connectivity of the pnictogen-chalcogen part of the crystal structure. We additionally find a series of compounds with low effective mass, high dielectric constant and other properties that suggest good performance as electronic materials and also several potential thermoelectric compounds. Experimental optical data and solar conversion efficiency are reported for Sn-Sb-S samples, and results in accord with predicted good performance are found. The results illustrate the utility of dielectric properties as a screen for identifying complex semiconductors.

We report tests of various density functionals for ferromagnetic, Fe, Co and Ni with a focus on characterizing the behavior of the so-called strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) functional. It is found that SCAN is closer in behavior to functionals that yield localized behavior, such as hybrid functionals, than other semilocal functionals that are tested. The results are understood in terms of a tendency to differentiate orbitals, favoring integer occupation, which is necessary for a correct description of atomic systems, but inappropriate for the open shell metallic ferromagnetic metals studied here.

Covalent-polar semiconductors that show intrinsic two-dimensional (2D) vertical polarization present new device opportunities. These materials differ from ordinary ferroelectrics in that they are able to maintain polarization normal to a surface even with an unscreened depolarization field. Identifying phases that exhibit intrinsic 2D vertical polarization is an ongoing challenge. Here we report via computational material design the discovery of a new promising phase, specifically 2D LiAlTe$_2$. The design idea is developed from the physical understanding of three-dimensional hyperferroelectric covalent polar semiconductors. We used the structure determination method combining swarm intelligence algorithm and first-principles calculations to identify energetically stable structures. In addition to the expected layered version of bulk LiAlTe$_2$, $β$-LiAlTe$_2$, we find a novel 2D structure, $γ$-LiAlTe$_2$. In this phase, the vertical dipole can be switched between 0.07 and -0.11 e$\cdot$angstrom. This switching is triggered by the movement of Li atom between two local energy minima. The associated asymmetric double-well energy profile can be continuously tuned by the applied electric field as well as strain. There is, therefore, a reversible transition between two polar states. This discovered off-plane switchability provides an opportunity for the 2D $γ$-LiAlTe$_2$ based interfacial phase change memory device for example by growing $γ$-LiAlTe$_2$/GeTe heterostructures.

Nano-structuring is an extremely promising path to high performance thermoelectrics. Favorable improvements in thermal conductivity are attainable in many material systems, and theoretical work points to large improvements in electronic properties. However, realization of the electronic benefits in practical materials has been elusive experimentally. A key challenge is that experimental identification of the quantum confinement length, below which the thermoelectric power factor is significantly enhanced, remains elusive due to lack of simultaneous control of size and carrier density. Here we investigate gate tunable and temperature-dependent thermoelectric transport in $γ$ phase indium selenide ($γ$ InSe, n type semiconductor) samples with thickness varying from 7 to 29 nm. This allows us to properly map out dimension and do** space. Combining theoretical and experimental studies, we reveal that the sharper pre-edge of the conduction-band density of states arising from quantum confinement gives rise to an enhancement of the Seebeck coefficient and the power factor in the thinner InSe samples. Most importantly, we experimentally identify the role of the competition between quantum confinement length and thermal de Broglie wavelength in the enhancement of power factor. Our results provide an important and general experimental guideline for optimizing the power factor and improving the thermoelectric performance of two-dimensional layered semiconductors.

The low thermal conductivity of piezoelectric perovskites is a challenge for high power transducer applications. We report first principles calculations of the thermal conductivity of ferroelectric PbTiO$_3$ and the cubic nearly ferroelectric perovskite KTaO$_3$. The calculated thermal conductivity of PbTiO$_3$ is much lower than that of KTaO$_3$ in accord with experiment. Analysis of the results shows that the reason for the low thermal conductivity of PbTiO$_3$ is the presence of low frequency optical phonons associated with the polar modes. These are less dispersive in PbTiO$_3$, leading to a large three phonon scattering phase space. These differences between the two materials are associated with the $A$-site driven ferroelectricity of PbTiO$_3$ in contrast to the $B$-site driven near ferroelectricity of KTaO$_3$. The results are discussed in the context of modification of the thermal conductivity of electroactive materials.

Here we assess a series of bismuth/antimony oxyhalides and chalcohalides using consistent first principles methods to ascertain their properties and obtain trends. The quantum spin continuum and classical spin freezing, associated with a glassy state, represent two opposite extremes of a correlated electronic material. Here, we report the coexistence of a quantum spin continuum with a weak spin glass order in Co-doped CaRuO$_{3}$ perovskite near the chemical do** dependent metal-insulator transition boundary. Inelastic neutron measurements on Ca(Co$_{0.15}$Ru$_{0.85}$)O$_{3}$ at low temperature, $T$ = 1.5 K, reveal a continuum spectrum in the $Q-E$ space due to uncorrelated spin fluctuations. This persists across the glass transition at $T_G \simeq$23 K. Furthermore, scaling of the dynamic susceptibility yields a very small scaling coefficient $α$ $\simeq$ 0.1, suggesting extreme locality of the dynamic properties. The experimental results indicate the realization of a narrow regime where the distinction between continuum dynamic behavior and glass-like regimes is reduced.

Transition metal perovskite chalcogenides (TMPCs) are explored as stable, environmentally friendly semiconductors for solar energy conversion. They can be viewed as the inorganic alternatives to hybrid halide perovskites, and chalcogenide counterparts of perovskite oxides with desirable optoelectronic properties in the visible and infrared part of the electromagnetic spectrum. Past theoretical studies have predicted large absorption coefficient, desirable defect characteristics, and bulk photovoltaic effect in TMPCs. Despite recent progresses in polycrystalline synthesis and measurements of their optical properties, it is necessary to grow these materials in high crystalline quality to develop a fundamental understanding of their optical properties and evaluate their suitability for photovoltaic application. Here, we report the growth of single crystals of a two-dimensional (2D) perovskite chalcogenide, Ba3Zr2S7, with a natural superlattice-like structure of alternating double-layer perovskite blocks and single-layer rock salt structure. The material demonstrated a bright photoluminescence peak at 1.28 eV with a large external luminescence efficiency of up to 0.15%. We performed time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy on these crystals and obtained an effective recombination time of ~65 ns. These results clearly show that 2D Ruddlesden-Popper phases of perovskite chalcogenides are promising materials to achieve single-junction solar cells.

We present neutron total scattering and density functional theory studies on quasi-one-dimensional superconducting K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ revealing a frustrated structural instability. Our first principles calculations find a significant phonon instability which, under energy minimization, corresponds to a frustrated orthorhombic distortion. In diffraction studies we find large and temperature independent atomic displacement parameters which pair distribution analyses confirms and shows as resulting from highly localized orthorhombic distortions of the CrAs sublattice and coupled K displacements. These results suggest a far more complex phase diagram than previously assumed for this unusual superconductor with the likelihood of subtle interplays of structure, electron-phonon and magnetic interactions.

Transition metal perovskite chalcogenides (TMPC) are a new class of semiconductor materials with broad tunability of physical properties due to their chemical and structural flexibility. Theoretical calculations show that band gaps of TMPCs are tunable from Far IR to UV spectrum. Amongst these materials, more than a handful of materials have energy gap and very high absorption coefficients, which are appropriate for optoelectronic applications, especially solar energy conversion. Despite several promising theoretical predictions, very little experimental studies on their physical properties are currently available, especially optical properties. We report a new synthetic route towards high quality bulk ceramic TMPCs and systematic study of three phases, SrZrS3 in two different room temperature stabilized phases and one of BaZrS3. All three materials were synthesized with a catalyzed solid-state reaction process in sealed ampoules. Structural and chemical characterizations establish high quality of the samples, which is confirmed by the intense room temperature photoluminescence (PL) spectra showing direct band gaps around 1.53eV, 2.13eV and 1.81eV respectively. The potential of these materials for solar energy conversion was evaluated by measurement of PL quantum efficiency and estimate of quasi Fermi level splitting.

Motivated by RIXS experiments on a wide range of complex heavy oxides, including rhenates, osmates, and iridates, we discuss the theory of RIXS for site-localized $t_{2g}$ orbital systems with strong spin-orbit coupling. For such systems, we present exact diagonalization results for the spectrum at different electron fillings, showing that it accesses "single-particle" and "multi-particle" excitations. This leads to a simple picture for the energies and intensities of the RIXS spectra in Mott insulators such as double perovskites which feature highly localized electrons, and yields estimates of the spin-orbit coupling and Hund's coupling in correlated $5d$ oxides. We present new higher resolution RIXS data at the Re-L$_3$ edge in Ba$_2$YReO$_6$ which finds a previously unresolved peak splitting, providing further confirmation of our theoretical predictions. Using ab initio electronic structure calculations on Ba$_2$${\cal M}$ReO$_6$ (with ${\cal M}$=Re, Os, Ir) we show that while the atomic limit yields a reasonable effective Hamiltonian description of the experimental observations, effects such as $t_{2g}$-$e_g$ interactions and hybridization with oxygen are important. Our ab initio estimate for the strength of the intersite exchange coupling shows that, compared to the osmates, the exchange is one or two orders of magnitude weaker in the rhenates and iridates, which may partly explain the suppression of long-range magnetic order in the latter compounds. As a way to interpolate between the site-localized picture and our electronic structure band calculations, we discuss the spin-orbital levels of the ${\cal M}$O$_6$ cluster. This suggests a possible role for non-dispersive intra-cluster excitons in Ba$_2$YIrO$_6$ which may lead to a weak breakdown of the atomic $J_{\rm eff}=0$ picture and to small magnetic moments.

We report properties of the reported transparent conductor CuI, including the effect of heavy $p$-type do**. The results, based on first principles calculations, include analysis of the electronic structure and calculations of optical and dielectric properties. We find that the origin of the favorable transparent conducting behavior lies in the absence in the visible of strong interband transitions between deeper valence bands and states at the valence band maximum that become empty with $p$-type do**. Instead, strong interband transitions to the valence band maximum are concentrated in the infrared with energies below 1.3 eV. This is contrast to the valence bands of many wide band gap materials. Turning to the mobility we find that the states at the valence band maximum are relatively dispersive. This originates from their antibonding Cu $d$ - I $p$ character. We find a modest enhancement of the Born effective charges relative to nominal values, leading to a dielectric constant $\varepsilon(0)$=6.3. This is sufficiently large to reduce ionized impurity scattering, leading to the expectation that the properties of CuI can be still can be significantly improved through sample quality.

Through inelastic neutron scattering and density functional theory we investigate the magnetic interactions and probe how the magnetism is influenced by the change in hierarchy of interactions as we move from Ca3LiOsO6 (5d3) to Ca3LiRuO6 (4d3). An alteration of the spin-gap and ordered local moment is observed, however the magnetic structure, Neel temperature and exchange interactions are unaltered. To explain this behavior it is necessary to include both spin-orbit coupling and hybridization, indicating the importance of an intermediate coupling approach when describing 5$d$ oxides.

The pressure-induced reemergence of the second high-Tc superconducting phase (SC-II) in the alkali-metal intercalated AxFe2-ySe2 (A = K, Rb, Cs, Tl) remains an enigma and proper characterizations on the superconducting- and normal-state properties of the SC-II phase were hampered by the intrinsic inhomogeneity and phase separation. To elucidate this intriguing problem, we performed a detailed high-pressure magnetotransport study on the recently discovered (Li1-xFex)OHFe1-ySe single crystals, which have high Tc~40 K and share similar Fermi surface topology as AxFe2-ySe2, but are free from the sample complications. We found that the ambient-pressure Tc~41 K is suppressed gradually to below 2 K upon increasing pressure to Pc ~5 GPa, above which a SC-II phase with higher Tc emerges and the Tc increases progressively to above 50 K up to 12.5 GPa. Interestingly, our high-precision resistivity data enable us to uncover the sharp transition of the normal state from a Fermi liquid for SC-I phase (0 < P < 5 GPa) to a non-Fermi-liquid for SC-II phase (P > 5GPa). In addition, the reemergence of high-Tc SC-II phase is found to accompany with a concurrent enhancement of electron carrier density. Since high-pressure structural study based on the synchrotron X-ray diffraction rules out the structural transition below 10 GPa, the observed SC-II phase with enhanced carrier density should be ascribed to an electronic origin associated with a pressure-induced Fermi surface reconstruction.

The interplay of BCS superconductivity and nontrivial band topology is expected to give rise to opportunities for creating topological superconductors, achieved through pairing spin-filtered boundary modes via superconducting proximity effects. The thus-engineered topological superconductivity can, for example, facilitate the search for Majorana fermion quasiparticles in condensed matter systems. Here we report a first-principles study of Mg$_2$Pb and predict that it should be a superconducting topological material. The band topology of Mg$_2$Pb is identical to that of the archetypal quantum spin Hall insulator HgTe, while isostructural and isoelectronic Mg$_2$Sn is topologically trivial; a trivial to topological transition is predicted for Mg$_2$Sn$_{1-x}$Pb$_x$ for x~0.77. We propose that Mg$_2$Pb-Mg$_2$Sn quantum wells should generate robust spin-filtered edge currents in analogy to HgTe/CdTe quantum wells. In addition, our calculations predict that Mg$_2$Pb should become superconducting upon electron do**. Therefore, Mg$_2$Pb is expected to provide a practical material platform for studying emergent phenomena arising from the interplay of superconductivity and band topology.

NaSbS2 is a semiconductor that was recently shown to have remarkable efficacy as a solar absorber indicating efficient charge collection even in defected material. We report first principles calculations of properties that show (1) an indirect gap only slightly smaller than the direct gap, which may impede recombination of photoexcited carriers, (2) highly anisotropic electronic and optical properties reflecting a layered crystal structure, (3) a pushed up valence band maximum due to repulsion from the Sb 5s states and (4) cross-gap hybridization between the S p derived valence bands and the Sb 5p states. This latter feature leads to enhanced Born effective charges that can provide local screening and therefore defect tolerance. These features are discussed in relation to the performance of the compound as a semiconductor with efficient charge collection.

We focus on known prototype materials Sn$_n$P$_2$O$_{5+n}$ (n=2, 3, 4, 5) and a previously unreported compound, SnP$_2$O$_6$ (n=1), which we find using global optimization structure prediction. The electronic structure calculations indicate that these compounds all have large band gaps above 3.2 eV, meaning their transparency to visible light. Several of these compounds show relatively low hole effective masses ($\sim$2-3 m$_0$), comparable the electron masses. This suggests potential bipolar conductivity depending on do**. The dispersive valence band-edges underlying the low hole masses, originate from the anti-bonding hybridization between the Sn 5s orbitals and the phosphate groups. Analysis of structure-property relationships for the metastable structures generated during structure search shows considerable variation in combinations of band gap and carrier effective masses, implying chemical tunability of these properties. The unusual combinations of relatively high band gap, low carrier masses and high chemical stability suggests possible optoelectronic applications of these Sn(II) phosphates, including p-type transparent conductors. Related to this, calculations for doped material indicate low visible light absorption, combined with high plasma frequencies.

The importance of electron-hole interband interactions is widely acknowledged for iron-pnictide superconductors with high transition temperatures (Tc). However, high-Tc superconductivity without hole carriers has been suggested in FeSe single-layer films and intercalated iron-selenides, raising a fundamental question whether iron pnictides and chalcogenides have different pairing mechanisms. Here, we study the properties of electronic structure in the high-Tc phase induced by pressure in bulk FeSe from magneto-transport measurements and first-principles calculations. With increasing pressure, the low-Tc superconducting phase transforms into high-Tc phase, where we find the normal-state Hall resistivity changes sign from negative to positive, demonstrating dominant hole carriers in striking contrast to other FeSe-derived high-Tc systems. Moreover, the Hall coefficient is remarkably enlarged and the magnetoresistance exhibits anomalous scaling behaviors, evidencing strongly enhanced interband spin fluctuations in the high-Tc phase. These results in FeSe highlight similarities with high-Tc phases of iron pnictides, constituting a step toward a unified understanding of iron-based superconductivity.

The pentatellurides, ZrTe5 and HfTe5 are layered compounds with one dimensional transition-metal chains that show a never understood temperature dependent transition in transport properties as well as recently discovered properties suggesting topological semimetallic behavior. Here we show that these materials are semiconductors and that the electronic transition is due to a combination of bipolar effects and different anisotropies for electrons and holes. We report magneto-transport properties for two kinds of ZrTe5 single crystals grown with the chemical vapor transport (S1) and the flux method (S2), respectively. These have distinct transport properties at zero field: the S1 displays a metallic behavior with a pronounced resistance peak and a sudden sign reversal in thermopower at approximately 130 K, consistent with previous observations of the electronic transition; in strikingly contrast, the S2 exhibits a semiconducting-like behavior at low temperatures and a positive thermopower over the whole temperature range. Refinements on the single-crystal X-ray diffraction and the energy dispersive spectroscopy analysis revealed the presence of noticeable Te-vacancies in the sample S1, confirming that the widely observed anomalous transport behaviors in pentatellurides actually take place in the Te-deficient samples. Electronic structure calculations show narrow gap semiconducting behavior, with different transport anisotropies for holes and electrons. For the degenerately doped n-type samples, our transport calculations can result in a resistivity peak and crossover in thermopower from negative to positive at temperatures close to that observed experimentally. Our present work resolves the longstanding puzzle regarding the anomalous transport behaviors of pentatellurides, and also resolves the electronic structure in favor of a semiconducting state.

We report systematic Angle Resolved Photoemission (ARPES) experiments using different photon polarizations and experimental geometries and find that the do** evolution of the normal state of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 deviates significantly from the predictions of a rigid band model. The data reveal a non-monotonic dependence upon do** of key quantities such as band filling, bandwidth of the electron pocket, and quasiparticle coherence. Our analysis suggests that the observed phenomenology and the inapplicability of the rigid band model in Co-doped Ba122 are due to electronic correlations, and not to either the size of the impurity potential, or self-energy effects due to impurity scattering. Our findings indicate that the effects of do** in pnictides are much more complicated than currently believed. More generally, they indicate that a deep understanding of the evolution of the electronic properties of the normal state, which requires an understanding of the do** process, remains elusive even for the 122 iron-pnictides, which are viewed as the least correlated of the high-TC unconventional superconductors.

The structural properties of LaCu$_{6-x}$Au$_x$ have been studied using neutron diffraction, x-ray diffraction, and heat capacity measurements. The continuous orthorhombic-monoclinic structural phase transition in LaCu$_{6}$ is suppressed linearly with Au substitution until a complete suppression of the structural phase transition occurs at the critical composition, $x_{c}$ = 0.3. Heat capacity measurements at low temperatures indicate residual structural instability at $x_c$ that extends well into the orthorhombic phase. The instability is ferroelastic in nature, with density functional theory (DFT) calculations showing negligible coupling to electronic states near the Fermi level. The data and calculations presented here are consistent with the zero temperature termination of a continuous structural phase transition suggesting that the LaCu$_{6-x}$Au$_x$ series hosts an elastic quantum critical point.

We present a first-principles framework to investigate the electron scattering channels and transport properties for polar material by combining the exact solution of linearized electron-phonon (e-ph) Boltzmann transport equation in its integral-differential form associated with the e-ph coupling matrices obtained from polar Wannier interpolation scheme. No ad hoc parameter is required throughout this calculation, and GaAs, a well-studied polar material, is used as an example to demonstrate this method. In this work, the long-range and short-range contributions as well as the intravalley and intervalley transitions in the e-ph interactions (EPIs) have been quantitatively addressed. Promoted by such mode-by-mode analysis, we find that in GaAs, the piezoelectric scattering is comparable to deformation-potential scattering for electron scatterings by acoustic phonons in EPI even at room temperature and makes a significant contribution to mobility. Furthermore, we achieved good agreements with experimental data for the mobility, and identified that electrons with mean free paths between 130 and 210 nm contribute dominantly to the electron transport at 300 K. Such information provides deeper understandings on the electron transport in GaAs, and the presented framework can be readily applied to other polar materials.

We report a structural study of the Weyl semimetals TaAs and TaP, utilizing diffraction and imaging techniques, where we show that they contain a high density of defects, leading to non-stoichiometric single crystals of both semimetals. Despite the observed defects and non-stoichiometry on samples grown using techniques already reported in the literature, de Haas-van Alphen measurements on TaP reveal quantum oscillations and a high carrier mobility, an indication that the crystals are of quality comparable to those reported elsewhere. Electronic structure calculations on TaAs reveal that the position of the Weyl points relative to the Fermi level shift with the introduction of vacancies and stacking faults. In the case of vacancies the Fermi surface becomes considerably altered, while the effect of stacking faults on the electronic structure is to allow the Weyl pockets to remain close to the Fermi surface. The observation of quantum oscillations in a non-stoichiometric crystal and the persistence of Weyl fermion pockets near the Fermi surface in a crystal with stacking faults point to the robustness of these quantum phenomena in these materials.

The influence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) on the physical properties of the 5d2 system Sr2MgOsO6 is probed via a combination of magnetometry, specific heat measurements, elastic and inelastic neutron scattering, and density functional theory calculations. Although a significant degree of frustration is expected, we find that Sr2MgOsO6 orders in a type I antiferromagnetic structure at the remarkably high temperature of 108 K. The measurements presented allow for the first accurate quantification of the size of the magnetic moment in a 5d2 system of 0.60(2) muB - a significantly reduced moment from the expected value for such a system. Furthermore, significant anisotropy is identified via a spin excitation gap, and we confirm by first principles calculations that SOC not only provides the magnetocrystalline anisotropy, but also plays a crucial role in determining both the ground state magnetic order and the size of the local moment in this compound. Through comparison to Sr2ScOsO6, it is demonstrated that SOC-induced anisotropy has the ability to relieve frustration in 5d2 systems relative to their 5d3 counterparts, providing an explanation of the high TN found in Sr2MgOsO6.

Oxides with good p-type conductivity have been long sought after to achieve high performance all-oxide optoelectronic devices. Divalent Sn(II) based oxides are promising candidates because of their rather dispersive upper valence bands caused by the Sn-5s/O-2p anti-bonding hybridization. There are so far few known Sn(II) oxides being p-type conductive suitable for device applications. Here, we present via first-principles global optimization structure searches a material design study for a hitherto unexplored Sn(II)-based system, ternary alkaline-earth metal Sn(II) oxides in the stoichiometry of MSn2O3 (M = Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba). We identify two stable compounds of SrSn2O3 and BaSn2O3, which can be stabilized by Sn-rich conditions in phase stability diagrams. Their structures follow the Zintl behaviour and consist of basic structural motifs of SnO3 tetrahedra. Unexpectedly they show distinct electronic properties with band gaps ranging from 1.90 (BaSn2O3) to 3.15 (SrSn2O3) eV, and hole effective masses ranging from 0.87 (BaSn2O3) to above 6.0 (SrSn2O3) m0. Further exploration of metastable phases indicates a wide tunability of electronic properties controlled by the details of the bonding between the basic structural motifs. This suggests further exploration of alkaline-earth metal Sn(II) oxides for potential applications requiring good p-type conductivity such as transparent conductors and photovoltaic absorbers.

We present an investigation of the thermoelectric properties of cubic perovskite SrTiO3. The results are derived from a combination of calculated transport functions obtained from Boltzmann transport theory in the constant scattering time approximation based on the electronic structure and existing experimental data for La-doped SrTiO3. The figure of merit ZT is modeled with respect to carrier concentration and temperature. The model predicts a relatively high $ZT$ at optimized do**, and suggests that the $ZT$ value can reach 0.7 at T = 1400 K. Thus $ZT$ can be improved from the current experimental values by carrier concentration optimization.
