Hybrid elastic and spin waves hold promises for energy-efficient and versatile generation and detection of magnetic signals, with potentially long coherence times. Here we report on the combined elastic and magnetic dynamics in a one-dimensional magneto-mechanical crystal composed of an array of magnetic nanowires. Phononic and magnonic modes are impulsively excited by an optical ultrafast trigger and their decay is monitored by time resolved Magneto Optical Kerr Effect, with complementary Brillouin Light Scattering measurements and micromagnetic simulations. The strength and degree of mixing of coherent and dissipative coupling of the quasi-particles is determined quantitatively.

Despite the huge recent interest towards chiral magnetism related to the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii Moriya interaction (iDMI) in layered systems, there is a lack of experimental data on the effect of iDMI on the spin waves eigenmodes of laterally confined nanostructures. Here we exploit Brillouin Light Scattering (BLS) to analyze the spin wave eigenmodes of non-interacting circular and elliptical dots, as well as of long stripes, patterned starting from a Pt(3.4 nm)/CoFeB(0.8 nm) bilayer, with lateral dimensions ranging from 100 nm to 400 nm. Our experimental results, corroborated by micromagnetic simulations based on the GPU-accelerated MuMax3 software package, provide evidence for a strong suppression of the frequency asymmetry between counter-propagating spin waves (corresponding to either Stokes or anti-Stokes peaks in BLS spectra), when the lateral confinement is reduced from 400 nm to 100 nm, i.e. when it becomes lower than the light wavelength. Such an evolution reflects the modification of the spin wave character from propagating to stationary and indicates that the BLS based method of quantifying the i-DMI strength from the frequency difference of counter propagating spin waves is not applicable in the case of magnetic elements with lateral dimension below about 400 nm.

The presence of interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) may lead to the appearance of Néel skyrmions in ferromagnetic films. These topologically protected structures, whose diameter is as small as a few nanometers, can be nowadays stabilized at room temperature and have been proposed for the realization of artificial magnonic crystals and new spintronic devices, such as racetrack memories. In this perspective, it is of utmost importance to analyze their dynamical properties in the GHz range, i.e. in the operation range of current communication devices. Here we exploited the software MuMax3 to calculate the dynamics of Néel skyrmions in the range between 1 and 30 GHz, considering first the eigenmodes of an isolated skyrmion, then the case of two interacting skyrmions and finally a linear chain, representing a one-dimensional magnonic crystal, whose magnonic band structure has been calculated as a function of the strength of both the DMI- and the exchange-constants, namely D and A. The magnonic bands can be interpreted as derived from the eigenmodes of isolated skyrmions, even if hybridization and anti-crossing phenomena occur for specific ranges of values of D and A. Therefore, varying the latter parameters, for instance by a proper choice of the materials and thicknesses, may enable one to fine-tune the permitted and forbidden frequency interval of the corresponding magnonic crystal.

Integrated optically-inspired wave-based processing is envisioned to outperform digital architectures in specific tasks, such as image processing and speech recognition. In this view, spin-waves represent a promising route due to their nanoscale wavelength in the GHz frequency range and rich phenomenology. Here, we realize a versatile optically-inspired platform using spin-waves, demonstrating the wavefront engineering, focusing, and robust interference of spin-waves with nanoscale wavelength. In particular, we use magnonic nanoantennas based on tailored spin-textures for launching spatially shaped coherent wavefronts, diffraction-limited spin-wave beams, and generating robust multi-beam interference patterns, which spatially extend for several times the spin-wave wavelength. Furthermore, we show that intriguing features, such as resilience to back-reflection, naturally arise from the spin-wave nonreciprocity in synthetic antiferromagnets, preserving the high quality of the interference patterns from spurious counterpropagating modes. This work represents a fundamental step towards the realization of nanoscale optically-inspired devices based on spin-waves.

Magnonics is gaining momentum as an emerging technology for information processing. The wave character and Joule heating-free propagation of spin-waves hold promises for highly efficient analog computing platforms, based on integrated magnonic circuits. Miniaturization is a key issue but, so far, only few examples of manipulation of spin-waves in nanostructures have been demonstrated, due to the difficulty of tailoring the nanoscopic magnetic properties with conventional fabrication techniques. In this Letter, we demonstrate an unprecedented degree of control in the manipulation of spin-waves at the nanoscale by using patterned reconfigurable spin-textures. By space and time-resolved scanning transmission X-ray microscopy imaging, we provide direct evidence for the channeling and steering of propagating spin-waves in arbitrarily shaped nanomagnonic waveguides based on patterned domain walls, with no need for external magnetic fields or currents. Furthermore, we demonstrate a prototypic nanomagnonic circuit based on two converging waveguides, allowing for the tunable spatial superposition and interaction of confined spin-waves modes.
