Charge ordered kagome lattices have been demonstrated to be intriguing platforms for studying the intertwining of topology, correlation, and magnetism. The recently discovered charge ordered kagome material ScV_6Sn_6 does not feature a magnetic groundstate or excitations, thus it is often regarded as a conventional paramagnet. Here, using advanced muon-spin rotation spectroscopy, we uncover an unexpected hidden magnetism of the charge order. We observe a striking enhancement of the internal field width sensed by the muon ensemble, which takes place within the charge ordered state. More remarkably, the muon spin relaxation rate below the charge ordering temperature is substantially enhanced by applying an external magnetic field. Taken together with the hidden magnetism found in AV_3Sb_5 (A = K, Rb, Cs) and FeGe kagome systems, our results suggest ubiqitous time-reversal symmetry-breaking in charge ordered kagome lattices.

Abstract:
First principles density functional theory (DFT) simulations of antiferroelectric (AFE) PbZrO$_3$ and PbHfO$_3$ reveal a dynamical instability in the phonon spectra of their purported low temperature $Pbam$ ground states. This instability doubles the $c$-axis of $Pbam$ and condenses five new small amplitude phonon modes giving rise to an 80-atom $Pnam$ structure. Compared with $Pbam$, the stabilit…

Compared with $Pbam$, the stability of this structure is slightly enhanced and highly reproducible as demonstrated through using different DFT codes and different treatments of electronic exchange & correlation interactions. This suggests that $Pnam$ is a new candidate for the low temperature ground state of both materials. With this finding, we bring parity between the AFE archetypes and recent observations of a very similar AFE phase in doped or electrostatically engineered BiFeO$_3$.

We perform detailed muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) measurements in the classic antiferromagnet Fe$_2$O$_3$ and explain the spectra by considering dynamic population and dissociation of charge-neutral muon-polaron complexes. We show that charge-neutral muon states in Fe$_2$O$_3$, despite lacking the signatures typical of charge-neutral muonium centers in nonmagnetic materials, have a significant impact on the measured $μ$SR frequencies and relaxation rates. Our identification of such polaronic muon centers in Fe$_2$O$_3$ suggests that isolated hydrogen (H) impurities form analogous complexes, and that H interstitials may be a source of charge carrier density in Fe$_2$O$_3$.

We report a comprehensive muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) study of the prototypical magnetoelectric antiferromagnet Cr$_2$O$_3$. We find the positively charged muon ($μ^+$) occupies several distinct interstitial sites, and displays a rich dynamic behavior involving local hop**, thermally activated site transitions and the formation of a charge-neutral complex composed of a muon and an electron polaron. The discovery of such a complex has implications for the interpretation of $μ$SR spectra in a wide range of magnetic oxides, and opens a route to study the dopant characteristics of interstitial hydrogen impurities in such materials. We address implications arising from implanting a $μ^+$ into a linear magnetoelectric, and discuss the challenges of observing a local magnetoelectric effect generated by the charge of the muon.

Ferroelectric-based photovoltaics have shown great promise as a source of renewable energy, thanks to their in-built charge separation capability, yet their efficiency is often limited by low charge carrier mobilities. In this work, we compare the photovoltaic prospects of various phases of the multiferroic material BiFeO$_3$ by evaluating their charge carrier effective masses using first-principles simulations. We identify a tetragonal phase with the promising combination of a large spontaneous polarisation and relatively light charge carriers. From a systematic study of the octahedral distortions present in BiFeO$_3$, we explain the relationship between structure and effective masses in terms of the changes to the orbital character and overlap at the band edges that result from changes in the geometry. The findings in this study provide some design principles to engineer desired effective masses in BiFeO$_3$ and similar materials through manipulation of their crystal structures in experimentally accessible ways.

First principles studies of multiferroic materials, such as bismuth ferrite (BFO), require methods that extend beyond standard density functional theory (DFT). The DFT+U method is one such extension that is widely used in the study of BFO. We present a systematic study of the effects of the U parameter on the structural, ferroelectric and electronic properties of BFO. We find that the structural and ferroelectric properties change negligibly in the range of U typically considered for BFO (3-5 eV). In contrast, the electronic structure varies significantly with U. In particular, we see large changes to the character and curvature of the valence band maximum and conduction band minimum, in addition to the expected increase in band gap, as U increases. Most significantly, we find that the $t_{2g}$/$e_{g}$ ordering, expected from crystal field theory, is inverted for U values larger than 4 eV. We therefore recommend a U value of at most 4 eV to be applied to the Fe $d$ orbitals in BFO. More generally, this study emphasises the need for systematic investigations of the effects of the U parameter not merely on band gaps but on the electronic structure as a whole, especially for strongly correlated materials.
