The layered honeycomb magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$ is the most promising candidate for a Kitaev quantum spin liquid (KQSL) that can host charge-neutral Majorana fermions. Recent studies have shown significant sample dependence of thermal transport properties, which are a key probe of Majorana quasiparticles in the KQSL state, highlighting the importance of preparing high-quality single crystals of $α$-RuCl$_3$. Here, we present a relatively simple and reliable method to grow high-quality single crystals of $α$-RuCl$_3$. We use a two-step crystal growth method consisting of a purification process by chemical vapor transport (CVT) and a main crystal growth process by sublimation. The obtained crystals exhibit a distinct first-order structural phase transition from the monoclinic ($C2/m$) to the rhombohedral ($R\bar{3}$) structure at $\sim150$ K, which is confirmed by the nuclear quadrupole resonance spectra with much sharper widths than previously reported. The Raman spectra show the absence of defect-induced modes, supporting the good crystallinity of our samples. The jumps in the thermal expansion coefficient and specific heat at the antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition at 7.6-7.7 K are larger and sharper than those of previous samples grown by the CVT and Bridgman methods and do not show any additional AFM transitions at 10-14 K due to stacking faults. The longitudinal thermal conductivity in the AFM phase is significantly larger than previously reported, indicating a very long mean free path of heat carriers. All the results indicate that our single crystals are of superior quality with good crystallinity and few stacking faults, which provides a suitable platform for studying the Kitaev physics.

We present results of the coefficient of thermal expansion for the frustrated quasi-two-dimensional molecular conductor $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$RbZn(SCN)$_4$ for temperatures 1.5 K $\leq T \leq$ 290 K. A pronounced first-order phase transition anomaly is observed at the combined charge-order/structural transition at 215 K. Furthermore, clear evidence is found for two separate glasslike transitions at $T_{\mathrm{g}}$ = 90-100 K and $T_{\mathrm{g}}^\dagger$ = 120-130 K, similar to previous findings for $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$CsZn(SCN)$_4$ and $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$CsCo(SCN)$_4$, reported in T. Thomas et al., Phys. Rev. B 105, L041114 (2022), both of which lack the charge-order/structural transition. Our findings indicate that these glasslike transitions are common features for the $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2MM^\prime$(SCN)$_4$ family with $M$ = (Rb, Cs) and $M^\prime$ = (Co, Zn), irrespective of the presence or absence of charge order. These results are consistent with our model calculations on the glasslike dynamics associated with the flexible ethylene endgroups of the BEDT-TTF molecules for various $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2MM^\prime$(SCN)$_4$ salts, predicting two different conformational glass transitions. Moreover, calculations of the hop** integrals show a substantial degree of dependence on the endgroups' conformation, suggesting a significant coupling to the electronic degrees of freedom. Our findings support the possibility that the glassy freezing of the ethylene endgroups could drive or enhance glassy charge dynamics.

PbCuTe$_2$O$_6$ is considered as one of the rare candidate materials for a three-dimensional quantum spin liquid (QSL). This assessment was based on the results of various magnetic experiments, performed mainly on polycrystalline material. More recent measurements on single crystals revealed an even more exotic behavior, yielding ferroelectric order below $T_{\text{FE}}\approx 1\,\text{K}$, accompanied by distinct lattice distortions, and a somewhat modified magnetic response which is still consistent with a QSL. Here we report on low-temperature measurements of various thermodynamic, magnetic and dielectric properties of single crystalline PbCuTe$_2$O$_6$ in magnetic fields $B\leq 14.5\,\text{T}$. The combination of these various probes allows us to construct a detailed $B$-$T$ phase diagram including a ferroelectric phase for $B \leq$ $8\,\text{T}$ and a $B$-induced magnetic phase at $B \geq$ $11\,\text{T}$. These phases are preceded by or coincide with a structural transition from a cubic high-temperature phase into a distorted non-cubic low-temperature state. The phase diagram discloses two quantum critical points (QCPs) in the accessible field range, a ferroelectric QCP at $B_{c1}$ = $7.9\,\text{T}$ and a magnetic QCP at $B_{c2}$ = $11\,\text{T}$. Field-induced lattice distortions, observed in the state at $T>$ $1\,\text{K}$ and which are assigned to the effect of spin-orbit interaction of the Cu$^{2+}$-ions, are considered as the key mechanism by which the magnetic field couples to the dielectric degrees of freedom in this material.

Almost regular hexagonal arrays of a few micrometers tall and wide micropyramids consisting of soot nano-particles are formed on the surface of graphitized hollow filaments, which are resistively heated to ~1800$^\circ$C-2400$^\circ$C in an Ar atmosphere containing trace amounts of oxygen (~300 p.p.m.). At the higher temperatures (T>2300$^\circ$C, approximately) the soot particles are represented mainly by multi-shell carbon nano-onions. The height and the width of the pyramids is strongly dependent on the temperature of the resistive heating, diminishing from 5-10mkm at T=1800$^\circ$C to 1mkm at 2300-2400$^\circ$C. Quasi-hexagonal arrays of the micropyramids are organized in the convex ``craters'' on the surface of the microtubes, which grow with the time of the thermal treatment. The pyramids are pointing always normally to the surface of the craters, except at the boundaries between the craters, where the normal direction is not well defined. The pyramids are soft and can be easy destroyed by touching them, but can be hardened by heating them in the oxygen-free atmosphere. The pyramids are observed only on the exterior surface of the microtubes, but not on their inner surface. This suggests that the thermophoretic force generated by a strong temperature gradient near the external surface of the tubes may be the cause of the micropyramids formation. Electrostatic charging of the soot nanoparticles due to thermionic emission may also be relevant to this phenomenon. The micropyramids can function as field emission point sources, as demonstrated with the use of a micro-nanoprobing station, mounted in a scanning electron microscope.

The organic system, $κ$-[(BEDT-TTF)$_{1-x}$(BEDT-STF)$_x$]$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$, showing the Mott transition between a nonmagnetic Mott insulating (NMI) state and a Fermi liquid (FL), is systematically studied by calorimetric measurements. An increase of the electronic heat capacity at the transition from the NMI state to the FL state which keeps the triangular dimer lattice demonstrates that the charge sector lost in the Mott insulating state is recovered in the FL state. We observed that the remaining low-energy spin excitations in the Mott insulating state show unique temperature dependence, and that the NMI state has a larger lattice entropy originating from the frustrated lattice, which leads to the Pomeranchuk-like effect on the electron localization. Near the Mott boundary, an unexpected enhancement and magnetic-field dependence of heat capacity are observed. This anomalous heat capacity is different from the behavior in the typical first-order Mott transition and shows similarities with quantum critical behavior. To reconcile our results with previously reported scenarios about a spin gap and the first-order Mott transition, further studies are desired.

The THz emission mode was estimated by a simple polarization measurement, and a simulation study was conducted to examine the validity of the polarization analysis. The refractive index of whisker crystals revealed through the polarization analyses was greater than that of bulk single crystals and agreed well with our previous THz emission report. The simulation study suggested the complex plasma excitation mode of the THz emission, and an interpretation of the refractive index obtained in this study is provided.

We report a detailed experimental and theoretical study on the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the structural and magnetic aspects of the layered honeycomb antiferromagent $α$-RuCl$_{3}$. Magnetic susceptibility measurements performed under almost ideal hydrostatic-pressure conditions yield that the phase transition to zigzag-type antiferromagnetic order at $T_N$ = 7.3 K can be rapidly suppressed to about 6.1 K. A further suppression with increasing pressure is impeded due to the occurrence of a pressure-induced structural transition at $p \geq$ 104 MPa, accompanied by a strong dimerization of Ru-Ru bonds, which gives rise to a collapse of the magnetic susceptibility. Whereas the dimerization transition is strongly first order, as reflected by large discontinuous changes in $χ$ and pronounced hysteresis effects, the magnetic transition under varying pressure and magnetic field also reveals indications for a weakly first-order transition. We assign this observation to a strong magnetoelastic coupling in this system. Measurements of $χ$ under varying pressure in the paramagnetic regime ($T > T_N$) and before dimerization ($p <$ 100 MPa) reveal a considerable increase of $χ$ with pressure. These experimental observations are consistent with the results of ab-initio Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations on the pressure-dependent structure and the corresponding pressure-dependent magnetic model. Comparative susceptibility measurements on a second crystal showing two consecutive magnetic transitions instead of one, indicating the influence of stacking faults. Using different temperature-pressure protocols the effect of these stacking faults can be temporarily overcome, transforming the magnetic state from a multiple-$T_N$ into a single-$T_N$ state.

Even when a femtosecond pulsed laser was used, which generally induces fewer heat accumulation effects than the case for a CW laser, tellurium segregation was observed in coherent phonon spectra with increasing excitation density, while no structural phase transition among polymorphs of $\mathrm{MoTe_2}$ was observed. The use of higher photon-energy excitation, however, was found to suppress tellurium segregation.

The band structure and magnetic properties of organic charge-transfer salt $λ$-(BEDSe-TTF)$_2$GaCl$_4$ (BEDSe-TTF: bis(ethylenediseleno)tetrathiafulvalene; abbreviated as $λ$-BEDSe) are investigated. The reported crystal structure is confirmed using X-ray diffraction measurements, and the transfer integrals are calculated. The degree of electron correlation $U/W$ ($U$: on-site Coulomb repulsion, $W$: bandwidth) of $λ$-BEDSe is larger than one and comparable to that of the isostructural Mott insulator $λ$-(ET)$_2$GaCl$_4$ (ET: bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene, abbreviated as $λ$-ET), whereas the $U/W$ of the superconducting salt $λ$-(BETS)$_2$GaCl$_4$ (BETS: bis(ethylenedithio)tetraselenafulvalene) is smaller than one. $^{13}$C-NMR and $μ$SR measurements revealed that $λ$-BEDSe undergoes an antiferromagnetic (AF) ordering below $T_{\rm N} = 22$~K. In the AF state, discrete $^{13}$C-NMR spectra with a remaining central peak are observed, indicating the commensurate AF spin structure also observed in $λ$-ET. The similarity between the structural and magnetic properties of $λ$-BEDSe and $λ$-ET suggests that both salts are in the same electronic phase, i.e., the physical properties of $λ$-BEDSe can be understood by the universal phase diagram of bandwidth-controlled $λ$-type organic conductors obtained by donor molecule substitution.

We report the observation of spin-polarized superconductivity in Bernal bilayer graphene when doped to a saddle-point van Hove singularity generated by large applied perpendicular electric field. We observe a cascade of electrostatic gate-tuned transitions between electronic phases distinguished by their polarization within the isospin space defined by the combination of the spin and momentum-space valley degrees of freedom. While all of these phases are metallic at zero magnetic field, we observe a transition to a superconducting state at finite $B_\parallel\approx 150$mT applied parallel to the two dimensional sheet. Superconductivity occurs near a symmetry breaking transition, and exists exclusively above the $B_\parallel$-limit expected of a paramagnetic superconductor with the observed $T_C\approx 30$mK, implying a spin-triplet order parameter.

Infrared spectroscopy reveals only minor splitting in the vibrational features of the latter compound, common to other strongly dimerized $κ$-salts. When the organic molecules are arranged in the $λ$-pattern, however, a strong vibrational $ν_{27}(b_{1u})$ mode is present, that forms a narrow doublet. %indicating static charge imbalance of about 2\%. Most important, when cooling $λ$-(BETS)$_2$GaCl$_4$ below 150~K, two weak side modes appear due to charge disproportionation that amounts to $2δ=0.14e$. In analogy to the $β^{\prime\prime}$-type organic conductors, we propose that charge fluctuations play an important role in emerging of unconventional superconductivity in ł at $T_c=4.7$~K. We discuss the possibility of a charge-density-wave that coexists with the proposed spin-density-wave state.

We present a combined study of thermal expansion and resistance fluctuation spectroscopy measurements exploring the static and dynamic aspects of the charge-glass formation in the quasi-two-dimensional organic conductors $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$$MM^\prime$(SCN)$_4$ with $M$ = Cs and $M^\prime$ = Co,Zn. In these materials, the emergence of a novel charge-glass state so far has been interpreted in purely electronic terms by considering the strong frustration of the Coulomb interactions on a triangular lattice. Contrary to this view, we provide comprehensive evidence for the involvement of a \textit{structural} glass-like transition at $T_{\text{g}} \sim 90-100\,$K. This glassy transition can be assigned to the freezing of structural conformations of the ethylene endgroups in the donor molecule with an activation energy of $E_{\rm{a}}\approx 0.32\,$eV, and the concomitant slowing down of the charge carrier dynamics is well described by a model of non-exponential kinetics. These findings discolse an important aspect of the phase diagram and renders the current understanding of the charge-glass state in the whole family of $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2MM^\prime$(SCN)$_4$ incomplete. Our results suggest that the entanglement of slow structural and charge-cluster dynamics due to the intimate coupling of lattice and electronic degrees of freedom determine the charge-glass formation under geometric frustration.

Recent works have demonstrated a cold-atom analog of a mesoscopic conductor by engineering a narrow conducting channel with optical potentials, which opens the door for a wealth of research of atomtronics emulating mesoscopic electronic devices and beyond. Here we realize an alternative scheme of the quantum transport experiment with ytterbium atoms in a two-orbital optical lattice system. Our system consists of a multi-component Fermi gas and a localized impurity, where the current can be created in the spin space by introducing the spin-dependent interaction with the impurity. We demonstrate a rich variety of localized-impurity-induced quantum transports, which paves the way for atomtronics exploiting spin degrees of freedom.

Geometrical frustration among interacting spins combined with strong quantum fluctuations destabilize long-range magnetic order in favour of more exotic states such as spin liquids. By following this guiding principle, a number of spin liquid candidate systems were identified in quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) systems. For 3D, however, the situation is less favourable as quantum fluctuations are reduced and competing states become more relevant. Here we report a comprehensive study of thermodynamic, magnetic and dielectric properties on single crystalline and pressed-powder samples of PbCuTe$_2$O$_6$, a candidate material for a 3D frustrated quantum spin liquid featuring a hyperkagome lattice. Whereas the low-temperature properties of the powder samples are consistent with the recently proposed quantum spin liquid state, an even more exotic behaviour is revealed for the single crystals. These crystals show ferroelectric order at $T_{\text{FE}} \approx 1\,\text{K}$, accompanied by strong lattice distortions, and a modified magnetic response -- still consistent with a quantum spin liquid -- but with clear indications for quantum critical behaviour.

We investigate ultrafast phonon dynamics in the Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_{x}$ alloy system for various compositions $x$ using a reflective femtosecond pump-probe technique. The coherent optical phonons corresponding to the A$_{1g}$ local vibrational modes of Bi-Bi, Bi-Sb, and Sb-Sb are generated and observed in the time domain with a few picoseconds dephasing time. The frequencies of the coherent optical phonons were found to change as the Sb composition $x$ was varied, and more importantly, the relaxation time of those phonon modes was dramatically reduced for $x$ values in the range 0.5--0.8. We argue that the phonon relaxation dynamics are not simply governed by alloy scattering, but are significantly modified by anharmonic phonon-phonon scattering with implied minor contributions from electron-phonon scattering in a Weyl-semimetal phase.

Landau suggested that the low-temperature properties of metals can be understood in terms of long-lived quasiparticles with all complex interactions included in Fermi-liquid parameters, such as the effective mass $m^{\star}$. Despite its wide applicability, electronic transport in bad or strange metals and unconventional superconductors is controversially discussed towards a possible collapse of the quasiparticle concept. Here we explore the electrodynamic response of correlated metals at half filling for varying correlation strength upon approaching a Mott insulator. We reveal persistent Fermi-liquid behavior with pronounced quadratic dependences of the optical scattering rate on temperature and frequency, along with a puzzling elastic contribution to relaxation. The strong increase of the resistivity beyond the Ioffe-Regel-Mott limit is accompanied by a `displaced Drude peak' in the optical conductivity. Our results, supported by a theoretical model for the optical response, demonstrate the emergence of a bad metal from resilient quasiparticles that are subject to dynamical localization and dissolve near the Mott transition.

We report on the observation of the spin-exchange dynamics of $^{171}\mathrm{Yb}$ atoms in the ground state $^1\mathrm{S}_0$ and in the metastable state $^3\mathrm{P}_0$. We implement the mixed-dimensional two-orbital system using a near-resonant and magic-wavelength optical lattices, where the $^1\mathrm{S}_0$ and $^3\mathrm{P}_0$ atoms are itinerant in a one-dimensional tube and localized in three dimensions, respectively. By exploiting an optical Stern-Gerlach method, we observe the spin depolarization of the $^1\mathrm{S}_0$ atoms induced by the spin-exchange interaction with the $^3\mathrm{P}_0$ atom. Our work could open the way to the quantum simulation of the Kondo effect.

We found out that Gd enters stoichiometrically and randomly into the Ho site, leading to a Vegard-type structural change. The addition of spherical S$^{7/2}$ Gd$^{3+}$ moments prompts an enhancement in Curie temperature, a reduction in peak value of the magnetic entropy change while still being relatively high, and a broadening of the magnetic entropy change curves. The overall influence is a relatively high refrigerant capacity and relative cooling power, and an extension of the thermal working range to higher temperatures; thus, electing Ho$_{1-x}$Gd$_{x}$B$_{2}$(as potential candidates for cryogenic refrigeration applications.

The dephasing of coherent longitudinal optical (LO) phonons in ion-irradiated GaP has been investigated with a femtosecond pump-probe technique based on electro-optic sampling. The dephasing time of the coherent LO phonon is found to be dramatically prolonged by the introduction of a small amount of defects by means of Ga-ion irradiation. The maximum dephasing time observed at room temperature is 9.1 ps at a Ga$^{+}$ ion dose of 10$^{13}$/cm$^{2}$, which is significantly longer than the value of 8.3 ps for GaP before ion irradiation. The longer dephasing time is explained in terms of the suppression of electron-LO-phonon scattering by the presence of defect-induced deep levels.

In condensed matter systems, higher temperatures typically disfavors ordered phases leading to an upper critical temperature for magnetism, superconductivity, and other phenomena. A notable exception is the Pomeranchuk effect in 3He, in which the liquid ground state freezes upon increasing the temperature due to the large entropy of the paramagnetic solid phase. Here we show that a similar mechanism describes the finite temperature dynamics of spin and valley-isospins in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene. Most strikingly a resistivity peak appears at high temperatures near superlattice filling factor nu = -1, despite no signs of a commensurate correlated phase appearing in the low-temperature limit. Tilted field magnetotransport and thermodynamic measurements of the inplane magnetic moment show that the resistivity peak is adiabatically connected to a finite-field magnetic phase transition at which the system develops finite isospin polarization. These data are suggestive of a Pomeranchuk-type mechanism, in which the entropy of disordered isospin moments in the ferromagnetic phase stabilizes it relative to an isospin unpolarized Fermi liquid phase at elevated temperatures. Measurements of the entropy, S/kB indeed find it to be of order unity per unit cell area, with a measurable fraction that is suppressed by an in-plane magnetic field consistent with a contribution from disordered physical spins. In contrast to 3He, however, no discontinuities are observed in the thermodynamic quantities across this transition. Our findings imply a small isospin stiffness, with implications for the nature of finite temperature transport as well as the mechanisms underlying isospin ordering and superconductivity in twisted bilayer graphene and related systems.

In bilayer graphene rotationally faulted to theta=1.1 degrees, interlayer tunneling and rotational misalignment conspire to create a pair of low energy flat band that have been found to host various correlated phenomena at partial filling. Most work to date has focused on the zero magnetic field phase diagram, with magnetic field (B) used as a probe of the B=0 band structure. Here, we show that twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) in a B as low as 2T hosts a cascade of ferromagnetic Chern insulators with Chern number |C|=1,2 and 3. We argue that the emergence of the Chern insulators is driven by the interplay of the moire superlattice with the B, which endow the flat bands with a substructure of topologically nontrivial subbands characteristic of the Hofstadter butterfly. The new phases can be accounted for in a Stoner picture in which exchange interactions favor polarization into one or more spin- and valley-isospin flavors; in contrast to conventional quantum Hall ferromagnets, however, electrons polarize into between one and four copies of a single Hofstadter subband with Chern number C=-1. In the case of the C=\pm3 insulators in particular, B catalyzes a first order phase transition from the spin- and valley-unpolarized B=0 state into the ferromagnetic state. Distinct from other moire heterostructures, tBLG realizes the strong-lattice limit of the Hofstadter problem and hosts Coulomb interactions that are comparable to the full bandwidth W and are consequently much stronger than the width of the individual Hofstadter subbands. In our experimental data, the dominance of Coulomb interactions manifests through the appearance of Chern insulating states with spontaneously broken superlattice symmetry at half filling of a C=-2 subband. Our experiments show that that tBLG may be an ideal venue to explore the strong interaction limit within partially filled Hofstadter bands.

In this paper, we report transport properties and a dynamical phase diagram at zero magnetic field in ion-gated MoS2. In addition to the universal jump in the current-voltage characteristic showing unambiguous evidence of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition, we observed multiple peaks in the temperature- and current-derivative of the electrical resistance, based on which a dynamical phase diagram in the current-temperature plane was constructed. We found current-induced dynamical states of vortex-antivortex pairs, containing that with the phase slip line. Also, we present a global phase diagram of vortices in gated MoS2 which captures the nature of vortex matter of clean 2D superconductors.

Here we investigate the effects of Dy substitution in the magnetocaloric properties of Ho$_{1-x}$Dy$_{x}$B$_{2}$ alloys ($\textit{x}$ = 0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 1.0). Due to the presence of two magnetic transitions in these alloys, despite the change in the peak magnitude of |$Δ\textit{S}_{M}$|, the refrigerant capacity ($\textit{RC}$) and refrigerant cooling power ($\textit{RCP}$) remains almost constant in all do** range, which as large as 5.5 J cm$^{-3}$ and 7.0 J cm$^{-3}$ for a field change of 5 T. Magnetic refrigeration exploits the magnetocaloric effect which is the entropy change upon application and removal of magnetic fields in materials, providing an alternate path for refrigeration other than the conventional gas cycles. While intensive research has uncovered a vast number of magnetic materials which exhibits large magnetocaloric effect, these properties for a large number of compounds still remain unknown. To explore new functional materials in this unknown space, machine learning is used as a guide for selecting materials which could exhibit large magnetocaloric effect. By this approach, HoB$_{2}$ is singled out, synthesized and its magnetocaloric properties are evaluated, leading to the experimental discovery of gigantic magnetic entropy change 40.1 J kg$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$ (0.35 J cm$^{-3}$ K$^{-1}$) for a field change of 5 T in the vicinity of a ferromagnetic second-order phase transition with a Curie temperature of 15 K. This is the highest value reported so far, to our knowledge, near the hydrogen liquefaction temperature thus it is a highly suitable material for hydrogen liquefaction and low temperature magnetic cooling applications.

We report on the dynamics of coherent phonons in semimetal 1T'-MoTe2 using femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy. On an ultrafast sub-picosecond time scale at room temperature, a low frequency and long-lifetime shear phonon mode was observed at 0.39 THz, which was previously reported in the form of a characteristic phonon only in the low temperature Td-MoTe2 phase. Unlike the other optical phonon modes, the shear phonon mode was found to strongly couple with photoexcited carriers. Moreover, the amplitude of the shear mode surprisingly decreased with increasing excitation density, a phenomenon which can be attributed to be a consequence of the lattice temperature rising after excitation. These results provide useful physical information on ultrafast lattice symmetry switching between the normal semimetal 1T' and the lattice inversion symmetry breaking Type-II Weyl semimetal Td phases.

When bilayer graphene is rotationally faulted to an angle $θ\approx 1.1^\circ$, theory predicts the formation of a flat electronic band and correlated insulating, superconducting, and ferromagnetic states have all been observed at partial band filling. The proximity of superconductivity to correlated insulators has suggested a close relationship between these states, reminiscent of the cuprates where superconductivity arises by do** a Mott insulator. Here, we show that superconductivity can appear without correlated insulating states. While both superconductivity and correlated insulating behavior are strongest near the flat band condition, superconductivity survives to larger detuning of the angle. Our observations are consistent with a "competing phases" picture, in which insulators and superconductivity arise from disparate mechanisms.

The electronic properties of molecular conductors can be readily varied via physical or chemical pressure as it increases the bandwidth W; this enables crossing the Mott insulator-to-metal phase transition by reducing electronic correlations U/W. Here we introduce an alternative path by increasing the molecular orbitals when partially replacing sulfur by selenium in the constituting bis-(ethylenedithio)-tetrathiafulvalene (BEDT-TTF) molecules of the title compound. We characterize the tuning of the insulating quantum spin liquid state via a Mott transition to the metallic Fermi-liquid state by transport, dielectric, and optical measurements. At this first-order phase transition, metallic regions coexist in the insulating matrix leading to pronounced percolative effects most obvious in a strong enhancement of the dielectric constant at low temperatures.

Utilizing site-selective NMR for a quasi-two dimensional organic conductor $λ$-(STF)$_2$GaCl$_4$, we investigate the non-magnetic insulating phase of the stripe lattice system consisting of triangular and square tilings. We found development of AF spin fluctuations with decreasing temperature. Regardless of large enhancement of spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ owing to critical slowing down below 10 K, no long-range magnetic ordering was observed down to 1.63 K two orders of magnitude less than the exchange interaction $J/k_{\rm B} \simeq$ 194 K. Moreover, $1/T_1$ saturated below 3.5 K. These results are in stark contrast to observed behaviors so far in other non-magnetic ground states discussed in terms of spin liquids, demonstrating realization of an exotic quantum state accompanying quantum criticality.

Here we explore the periodic structure of chalcogenide SL by observing coherent folded longitudinal acoustic (FLA) phonons excited by femtosecond laser pulse irradiation. The peak frequency of the FLA modes was observed to change upon variation of the thickness of the GeTe layer, which was well reproduced by means of an elastic continuum model. In addition, a new SL structure is unveiled for a sample consisting of thin GeTe and Sb$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ layers, which suggests intermixing of Ge atoms. This all-optical technique based on observation of coherent FLA modes offers a non-destructive characterization of superlattice structures at atomic resolution.

Chalcogenide superlattices (SL), formed by the alternate stacking of GeTe and Sb$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ layers, also referred to as interfacial phase change memory (iPCM), are a leading candidate for spin based memory device applications. Theoretically, the iPCM structure it has been predicted to form a 3D topological insulator or Dirac semimetal depending on the constituent layer thicknesses. Here, we experimentally investigate the topological insulating nature of chalcogenide SLs using a helicity dependent time-resolved Kerr measurement. The helicity dependent Kerr signal is observed to exhibit a four cycle oscillation with $π$/2 periodicity suggesting the existence of a Dirac-like cone in some chalcogenide SLs. Furthermore, we found that increasing the thickness of the GeTe layer dramatically changes the periodicity, indicating a phase transition from a Dirac semimetal into a trivial insulator. Our results demonstrate that thickness-tuned chalcogenide SLs can play an important role in the manipulation of topological states, which may open up new possibilities for spintronic devices based on chalcogenide SLs.

The Kerr rotation signal consists of the specular Inverse Faraday effect (SIFE) and the specular optical Kerr effect (SOKE), both of which are found to monotonically increase with decreasing photon energy over a sub-eV energy range. Although the dependence of the SIFE can be attributed to a response function of direct third-order nonlinear susceptibility, the magnitude of the SOKE reflects cascading second-order nonlinear susceptibility resulting from electronic transitions from bulk valence band to interface-originating Dirac states of the superlattice.

The correlation-driven Mott transition is commonly characterized by a drop in resistivity across the insulator-metal phase boundary; yet, the complex permittivity provides a deeper insight into the microscopic nature. We investigate the frequency- and temperature-dependent dielectric response of the Mott insulator $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$-Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$ when tuning from a quantum spin liquid into the Fermi-liquid state by applying external pressure and chemical substitution of the donor molecules. At low temperatures the coexistence region at the first-order transition leads to a strong enhancement of the quasi-static dielectric constant $ε_1$ when the effective correlations are tuned through the critical value. Several dynamical regimes are identified around the Mott point and vividly mapped through pronounced permittivity crossovers. All experimental trends are captured by dynamical mean-field theory of the single-band Hubbard model supplemented by percolation theory.

We have successfully synthesized the c-axis oriented YBa2Cu4O8 (Y-124) film on a SrTiO3 (1 0 0) substrate via a coprecipitation and a dip-coating method. The precipitations including Y, Ba and Cu ions were obtained using their metal nitrates solution and the aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide and oxalic acid. Superconducting transition of the synthesized film was observed at 64-70 K corresponding to bulk Y-124 in the magnetization and resistance measurement. The developed method is suitable to synthesize superconducting Y-124 films for technological applications.

Dynamical behavior of vortices plays central roles in the quantum phenomena of two-dimensional (2D) superconductors. Quantum metallic state, for example, showing an anomalous temperature-independent resistive state down to low-temperatures, has been a common subject in recently developed 2D crystalline superconductors, whose microscopic origin is still under debate. Here, we unveil a new aspect of the vortex dynamics in a noncentrosymmetric 2D crystalline superconductor of MoS$_{2}$ through the nonreciprocal transport measurement. The second harmonic resistance $R^{2w}$ at low temperature with high current indicates the classical vortex flow accompanying the ratchet motion. Furthermore, we found that $R^{2w}$ is substantially suppressed in the quantum metallic state with low current region, allowing identification of the quantum and classical ratchet motions of vortices by the magnitude of the second harmonic generation. This suggests that nonreciprocal transport measurement can be a powerful tool to probe the vortex dynamics in noncentrosymmetric 2D superconductors.

Candidates compounds for new thermoelectric and superconducting materials, which have narrow band gap and flat bands near band edges, were exhaustively searched by a high-throughput first-principles calculation from an inorganic materials database named AtomWork. We focused on AgIn$_{5}$Se$_{8}$ which has high density of state near the Fermi level. AgIn$_{5}$Se$_{8}$ was successfully synthesized as single crystals using a melt and slow cooling method. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the obtained crystal is high quality without deficiencies. The valence states in AgIn$_{5}$Se$_{8}$ were determined to be Ag1+, In3+ and Se2- in accordance with a formal charge by the core level X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. The electrical resistance was evaluated under high pressure using a diamond anvil cell with boron-doped diamond electrodes. Although the sample was insulator with a resistance of above 40 MΩ at ambient pressure, the resistance markedly decreased with increase of the pressure, and a pressure-induced superconducting transition was discovered at 3.4 K under 52.5 GPa. The transition temperature increased up to 3.7 K under further pressure of 74.0 GPa.

We have systematically investigated the spatial and temporal dynamics of crystallization that occurs in the phase-change material Ge2Sb2Te5 upon irradiation with an intense THz pulse. THz pump and optical probe spectroscopy revealed that Zener tunneling induces a nonlinear increase in the conductivity of the crystalline phase. This result indicates that the large electric field associated with the THz pulses causes a nonlinear increase only at the edge of the crystallized area. The electric field concentrating in this area causes a temperature increase via Joule heating, which in turn leads to nanometer scale crystal growth parallel to the field and the formation of filamentary conductive domains across the sample.

Superconductivity mostly appears in high carrier density systems and sometimes exhibits common phase diagrams in which the critical temperature Tc continuously develops with carrier density. Superconductivity enhanced in lightly doped regime has seldom been reported, although it is an ideal direction towards the crossover between Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) and Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) limits, where the behavior of Cooper pairs changes dramatically. Here we report transport properties and superconducting gaps in single-crystalline lithium-intercalated layered nitrides (LixHfNCl and LixZrNCl) down to the low-do** regime, enabled by a combination of ionic gating device and tunneling spectroscopy. Upon the reduction of do**, both systems display the increase of Tc, up to 24.9 K especially in LixHfNCl, with the concomitant enhancement of two-dimensionality leading to a pseudogap state below 35.5 K as well as the increase of superconducting coupling strengths 2D/kBTc reaching 5.9. Such behavior in the carrier density region as low as 10^20 cm-3 indicates that lightly doped two-dimensional superconductors exhibit the unprecedented nature that is distinct from that in conventional superconductors, and offer a new route to access BCS-BEC crossover.

Time-domain femtosecond laser spectroscopic measurements of the ultrafast lattice dynamics in 2H-MoTe2 bulk crystals were carried out to understand the carrier-phonon interactions that govern electronic transport properties. An unusually long lifetime coherent A1g phonon mode was observed even in the presence of very large density of photo-excited carriers at room temperature. The decay rate was observed to decrease with increasing excitation laser fluence. Based on the laser fluence dependence including the inducement of significant phonon softening and a peculiar decrease in phonon decay rate, we attribute the long lifetime lattice dynamics to weak anharmonic phonon-phonon coupling and a carrier-density-dependent deformation potential electron-phonon coupling.

We explore the ultrafast reflectivity response from photo-generated coupled phonon-surface Dirac plasmons in Sb$_2$Te$_3$ topological insulators several quintuple layers thick. The transient coherent phonon spectra obtained at different time frames exhibit a Fano-like asymmetric line shape of the $A^2_{1g}$ mode, which is attributed to quantum interference between continuum-like coherent Dirac-plasmons and phonons. By analyzing the time-dependent asymmetric line shape using the two-temperature model (TTM), it was determined that a Fano-like resonance persisted up to $\approx$1 ps after photo-excitation with a relaxation profile dominated by Gaussian decay at $\leq$200 fs. The asymmetry parameter could be well described by the TTM for $\geq$200 fs, therefore suggesting the coherence time of the Dirac plasmon is $\approx$200 fs.

Superconductor-insulator transition is one of the remarkable phenomena driven by quantum fluctuation in two-dimensional (2D) systems. Such a quantum phase transition (QPT) was investigated predominantly on highly disordered thin films with amorphous or granular structures using scaling law with constant exponents. Here, we provide a totally different view of QPT in highly crystalline 2D superconductors. According to the magneto-transport measurements in 2D superconducting ZrNCl and MoS2, we found that the quantum metallic state commonly observed at low magnetic fields is converted via the quantum Griffiths state to the weakly localized metal at high magnetic fields. The scaling behavior, characterized by the diverging dynamical critical exponent (Griffiths singularity), indicates that the quantum fluctuation manifests itself as superconducting puddles, in marked contrast with the thermal fluctuation. We suggest that an evolution from the quantum metallic to the quantum Griffiths state is generic nature in highly crystalline 2D superconductors with weak pinning potentials.

The electrodynamic response of organic spin liquids with highly-frustrated triangular lattices has been measured in a wide energy range. While the overall optical spectra of these Mott insulators are governed by transitions between the Hubbard bands, distinct in-gap excitations can be identified at low temperatures and frequencies which we attribute to the quantum spin liquid state. For the strongly correlated $β^{\prime}$-EtMe$_3$\-Sb\-[Pd(dmit)$_2$]$_2$, we discover enhanced conductivity below $175~{\rm cm}^{-1}$, comparable to the energy of the magnetic coupling $J\approx 250$ K. For $ω\rightarrow 0$ these low-frequency excitations vanish faster than the charge-carrier response subject to Mott-Hubbard correlations, resulting in a dome-shape band peaked at 100~\cm. Possible relations to spinons, magnons and disorder are discussed.

Topological insulators (TIs) are characterized by possessing metallic (gapless) surface states and a finite band-gap state in the bulk. As the thickness of a TI layer decreases down to a few nanometer, hybridization between the top and bottom surfaces takes place due to quantum tunneling, consequently at a critical thickness a crossover from a 3D-TI to a 2D insulator occurs. Although such a crossover is generally accessible by scanning tunneling microscopy, or by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, such measurements require clean surfaces. Here, we demonstrate that a cascading nonlinear magneto-optical effect induced via strong spin-orbit coupling can examine such crossovers. The helicity dependence of the time-resolved Kerr rotation exhibits a robust change in periodicity at a critical thickness, from which it is possible to predict the formation of a Dirac cone in a film several quintuple layers thick. This method enables prediction of a Dirac cone using a fundamental nonlinear optical effect that can be applied to a wide range of TIs and related 2D materials.
