We study the imaginary-time relaxation critical dynamics of the Neel-paramagnetic quantum phase transition in the two-dimensional (2D) dimerized S = 1/2 Heisenberg model. We focus on the scaling correction in the short-time region. A unified scaling form including both short-time and finite-size corrections is proposed. According to this full scaling form, improved short-imaginary-time scaling relations are obtained. We numerically verify the scaling form and the improved short-time scaling relations for different initial states using projector quantum Monte Carlo algorithm.

A recent focus of quantum spin liquid (QSL) studies is how disorder/randomness in a QSL candidate affects its true magnetic ground state. The ultimate question is whether the QSL survives disorder or the disorder leads to a "spin-liquid-like" state, such as the proposed random-singlet (RS) state. Since disorder is a standard feature of most QSL candidates, this question represents a major challenge for QSL candidates. YbMgGaO$_4$, a triangular lattice antiferromagnet with effective spin-1/2 Yb$^{3+}$ ions, is an ideal system to address this question, since it shows no long-range magnetic ordering with Mg/Ga site disorder. Despite the intensive study, it remains unresolved as to whether YbMgGaO$_4$ is a QSL or in the RS state. Here, through ultralow-temperature thermal conductivity and magnetic torque measurements, plus specific heat and DC magnetization data, we observed a residual $κ_0/T$ term and series of quantum spin state transitions in the zero temperature limit for YbMgGaO$_4$. These observations strongly suggest that a QSL state with itinerant excitations and quantum spin fluctuations survives disorder in YbMgGaO$_4$.

We carried out inelastic neutron scattering to study the spin-orbital (SO) exciton in a single crystal sample of CoTiO$_3$ as a function of temperature. CoTiO$_3$ is a honeycomb magnet with dominant XY-type magnetic interaction and an A-type antiferromagnetic order below $\mathrm{T_N} \approx 38$~K. We found that the SO exciton becomes softer, but acquires a larger bandwidth in the paramagnetic phase, compared to that in the magnetically ordered phase. Moreover, an additional mode is only observed in the intermediate temperature range, as the sample is warmed up above the lowest accessible temperature below $\mathrm{T_N}$. Such an unusual temperature dependence observed in this material suggests that its ground states (an $S_{\mathrm{eff}}=\frac{1}{2}$ doublet) and excited states multiplets are strongly coupled, and therefore cannot be treated independently, as often done in a pseudo-spin model. Our observations can be explained by a multi-level theory within random phase approximation that explicitly takes into account both the ground and excited multiplets. The success of our theory, which is originally developed to explain temperature dependence of magnetic excitations in the rare-earth magnets, highlight the similarity between the magnetic excitations in rare-earth systems and those in transition metal systems with strong spin orbit coupling.

Rare-earth pyrochlores are known to exhibit exotic magnetic phenomena. We report a study of crystal growth and characterizations of a new rare-earth compound Er$_2$AlSbO$_7$, in which Al$^{3+}$ and Sb$^{5+}$ ions share the same positions with a random distribution. The magnetism are studied by magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and thermal conductivity measurements at low temperatures down to several tens of milli-kelvin. Different from the other reported Er-based pyrochlores exhibiting distinct magnetically ordered states, a spin-freezing transition is detected in Er$_2$AlSbO$_7$ below 0.37 K, which is primarily ascribed to the inherent structural disorder. A cluster spin-glass state is proposed in view of the frequency dependence of the peak position in the ac susceptibility. In addition, the temperature and field dependence of thermal conductivity indicates rather strong spin fluctuations which is probably due to the phase competition.

Kagomé-staircase compound Ni$_3$V$_2$O$_8$ is an attractive multiferroic material exhibiting rich phase diagrams. However, the magnetic properties and magnetic transitions have been studied only above 1.3 K. In this work, we study the thermal conductivity ($κ$) of Ni$_3$V$_2$O$_8$ single crystals at low temperatures down to 0.3 K and in magnetic fields up to 14 T. In zero field, the magnetic transitions from the low-temperature incommensurate (LTI) phase to the commensurate phase (C) and then to a second commensurate phase (C') yield anomalies in $κ(T)$ curves at $T\rm_{LC}$ = 3.7 K and $T\rm_{CC'}$ = 2.0 K, respectively, which indicates a significant phonon scattering by the critical spin fluctuations. When the field is applied along the $a$ axis, the field dependence of $κ$ displays four anomalies associated with different magnetic transitions and reveals an undetected magnetic state at subKelvin temperatures. In addition, the $κ(B)$ curves are found to depend not only on the history but also on the magnitude of applying field. When the field is applied along the $b$ axis, a high-field phase locating above the LTI and high-temperature incommensurate (HTI) phases is revealed.

We report a study of thermal conductivity and resistivity at ultra-low temperatures and in high magnetic fields for semi-metal materials TaAs$_2$ and NbAs$_2$ by using single crystal samples. The thermal conductivity is strongly suppressed in magnetic fields, having good correspondence with the large positive magnetoresistance, which indicates a dominant electronic contribution to thermal conductivity. In addition, not only the resistivity but also the thermal conductivity display clear quantum oscillations behavior at subKelvin temperatures and in magnetic fields up to 14 T. The most striking phenomenon is that the thermal conductivity show a $T^4$ behavior at very low temperatures, while the resistivity show a $T$-independent behavior. This indicates a strong violation of the Weidemann-Franz law and points to a non-Feimi liquid state of these materials.

Here we report a study of the magnetism, specific heat, and thermal conductivity on Ni[SC(NH$_2$)$_2$]$_6$Br$_2$ (DHN) single crystals. Ni$^{2+}$ ions feature an $S$ = 1 rectangular lattice in the $bc$ plane, which can be viewed as an unfrustrated spatially anisotropic square lattice. A long-range antiferromagnetic order is developed at $T \rm_N =$ 2.23 K. Below $T\rm_N$, an upturn is observed in the $b$-axis magnetic susceptibility and the resultant minimum might be an indication for the $XY$ anisotropy in the ordered state. A gapped spin-wave dispersion is confirmed from the temperature dependence of the magnetic specific heat. Anisotropic temperature-field phase diagrams are mapped out and possible magnetic structures are proposed.

The DC and AC magnetic susceptibilities display anomalies with characteristic of the spin freezing. The crystals show ferroelectric transition at 40 K and 35 K ($T_{FE}$) for $x =$ 0.72 and 0.26, respectively, with a large value of 1400 $μ$C/m$^2$ at 8 K for electric polarization ($P_c$) along the spin-chain ($c$-axis) direction. Interestingly, the electric polarization perpendicular to the chain direction ($P_{ab}$) can also be detected and has value of 450 and 500 $μ$C/m$^2$ at 8 K for the $x =$ 0.72 and 0.26 samples, respectively. The specific heat and magnetic susceptibility show no anomaly around $T_{FE}$, which means that the electric polarization of these samples has no direct relationship with the magnetism. The X-ray diffraction and the Raman spectroscopy indicate that these samples may undergo Jahn-Teller distortions that could be the reason of electric polarization.

Our results demonstrate that subwavelength resolution can be achieved by realistic LHM slabs with finite absorption and dimension. We present the dynamic feature of the imaging process and the dependence of physical parameters on the performance of the superlens. These results help to clarify the diversed FDTD results reported previously. We also show that the achievable resolution is limited by the absorption and thickness of the LHM slabs, which introduces difficulties in practical applications of the superlens.

We have done a dc field hysteresis measurement of R_{s} to study the effects of vortex penetration on the anomalous effect. It is shown that the anomaly happens at a field level far below the low critical field, H_{c1,strip}, of the superconducting microstrip and vortex (Abrikosov) penetration would eliminate the anomalous effect observed at low field. This implies that the anomalous effect is not contributed by vortices.

We have studied an anomalous microwave (mw) response of superconducting YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-delta} (YBCO) microstrip resonators in the presence of a weak dc magnetic field, H_{dc}. The surface resistance (R_{s}) and reactance (X_{s}) show a correlated non-monotonic behaviour as a function of H_{dc}. R_{s} and X_{s} were found to initially decrease with elevated H_{dc} and then increase after H_{dc} reaches a crossover field, H_{c}, which is independent of the amplitude and frequency of the input mw signal within the measurements. The frequency dependence of R_{s} is almost linear at fixed H_{dc} with different magnitudes (<H_{c}, =H_{c} and >H_{c}). The impedance plane analysis demonstrates that r_{H}, which is defined as the ratio of the change in R_{s}(H_{dc}) and that in X_{s}(H_{dc}), is about 0.6 at H_{dc}<H_{c} and 0.1 at H_{dc}>H_{c}. The H_{dc} dependence of the surface impedance is qualitatively independent of the orientation of H_{dc}.

We have studied the exciton states in two coupled conjugated polymer chains which are modeled individually by the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger Hamiltonian and coupled by an interchain electron-transfer term. Both the intra- and inter-chain long range Coulomb interactions are taken into account. The properties of the lowest symmetric and antisymmetric exciton states are extensively discussed for both the parallel and anti-parallel ordering between these two chains. It is found that, for these two kinds of ordering, the features of excitons are quite different. Possible implications for the experiment of luminescent polymers are also addressed.
