Due to the large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy originating from spin-orbit coupling, magnetoelastic coupling is generally reported in easy-plane magnets with rectangular lattice where the easy magnetization is coupled with the lattice direction, while the acquisition of a novel coupling, beyond the easy-plane ferromagnets, in two-dimensional (2D) materials remains unknown. Here, by employing the density functional theory calculations, we demonstrate this feasibility with the discovery of long-range ferromagnetic ordering and elastic strain-mediated chiral-like atomic distortions behavior in a newly tetragonal As-Fe-As trilayer (t-FeAs monolayer), which shows large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, robust ferromagnetic ordering, and in-plane ferroelasticity. We firstly point out that obvious limits exist when using the four magnetic configurations to determine the magnetic ground state for a rectangular spin lattice even if more exchange interaction parameters are included. A four-state map** analysis is carefully examined for t-FeAs, where the calculated Curie temperature, Tc, is 435 K, which is higher than most reported 2D magnets, and can be further tuned by appropriate strains. Intriguingly, the chiral-like atomic distortion behavior of the Fe sub-layer is scanning tunneling microscopy characterizable, which can switch the magnetization axis between the out-of-plane and in-plane direction. This unusual finding of ferroelastic manipulation of both the atomic displacement and spin properties makes t-FeAs a promising candidate for future spintronics and also provides the possibility for exploring unprecedented coupling physics.

We propose a dissipative implementation of a variety of Kondo models by means of strong two-body losses localized on a few impurity sites of a fermionic lattice--a setup which is suited to experiments with ultracold atomic gases. We study in detail the simplest scenario of just one dissipated site, showing that it is effectively described by the Anderson impurity model with infinite repulsion, perturbed by a small residual dissipation. We compute a number of signatures of the Kondo effect in transport across the impurity, finding a competition between the Kondo resonance and the residual dissipation. Our dissipative setup can be generalized to two or more sites subject to losses--realizing an impurity with spin 1 or higher--and more reservoirs, opening up the possibility of simulating several kinds of Kondo-like models with ultracold atoms.

We develop a non-Gaussian variational approach that enables us to study both equilibrium and far-from-equilibrium physics of the two-dimensional Fermi polaron. This method provides an unbiased analysis of the polaron-to-molecule phase transition without relying on truncations in the total number of particle-hole excitations. Our results -- which include the ground state energy and quasiparticle residue -- are in qualitative agreement with the known Monte Carlo calculations. The main advantage of the non-Gaussian states compared to conventional numerical methods is that they enable us to explore long-time polaron evolution and, in particular, study various spectral properties accessible to both solid-state and ultracold atom experiments. We design two types of radiofrequency spectroscopies to measure polaronic and molecular spectral functions. Depending on the parameter regime, we find that these spectral functions and fermionic density profiles near the impurity display either long-lived oscillations between the repulsive and attractive polaron branches or exhibit fast relaxational dynamics to the molecular state.

An isogeometric Galerkin approach for analysing the free vibrations of piezoelectric shells is presented. The shell kinematics is specialised to infinitesimal deformations and follow the Kirchhoff-Love hypothesis. Both the geometry and physical fields are discretised using Catmull-Clark subdivision bases. It provides the required C1 continuous discretisation for the Kirchhoff-Love theory. The crystalline structure of piezoelectric materials is described using an anisotropic constitutive relation. Hamilton's variational principle is applied to the dynamic analysis to derive the weak form of the governing equations. The coupled eigenvalue problem is formulated by considering the problem of harmonic vibration in the absence of external load. The formulation for the purely elastic case is verified using a spherical thin shell benchmark. Thereafter, the piezoelectric effect and vibration modes of a transverse isotropic curved plate are analysed and evaluated for the Scordelis-Lo roof problem. Finally, the eigenvalue analysis of a CAD model of a piezoelectric speaker shell structure showcases the ability of the proposed method to handle complex geometries.

The Fermi-polaron problem of a mobile impurity interacting with fermionic medium emerges in various contexts, ranging from the foundations of Landau's Fermi-liquid theory to electron-exciton interaction in semiconductors, to unusual properties of high-temperature superconductors. While classically the medium provides only a dissipative environment to the impurity, quantum picture of polaronic dressing is more intricate and arises from the interplay of few- and many-body aspects of the problem. The conventional expectation for the dynamics of Fermi polarons is that it is dissipative in character, and any excess energy is rapidly emitted away from the impurity as particle-hole excitations. Here we report a strikingly different type of polaron dynamics in a one-dimensional system of the impurity interacting repulsively with the fermions. When the total momentum of the system equals the Fermi momentum, there emerges a sharp collective mode corresponding to long-lived oscillations of the polaronic cloud surrounding the impurity. This mode can be observed experimentally with ultracold atoms using Ramsey interferometry and radio-frequency spectroscopy.

Using the ultrafast pump-probe transient absorption spectroscopy, the femtosecond-resolved plasmon-exciton interaction of graphene-Ag nanowire hybrids is experimentally investigated, in the VIS-NIR region. The plasmonic lifetime of Ag nanowire is about 150 femtosecond (fs). For a single layer of graphene, the fast dynamic process at 275 fs is due to the excitation of graphene excitons, and the slow process at 1.4 picosecond (ps) is due to the plasmonic hot electron interaction with phonons of graphene. For the graphene-Ag nanowire hybrids, the time scale of the plasmon-induced hot electron transferring to graphene is 534 fs, and the metal plasmon enhanced graphene plasmon is about 3.2 ps in the VIS region. The graphene-Ag nanowire hybrids can be used for plasmon-driven chemical reactions. This graphene-mediated surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrate significantly increases the probability and efficiency of surface catalytic reactions co-driven by graphene-Ag nanowire hybridization, in comparison with reactions individually driven by monolayer graphene or single Ag nanowire. This implies that the graphene-Ag nanowire hybrids can not only lead to a significant accumulation of high-density hot electrons, but also significantly increase the plasmon-to-electron conversion efficiency, due to strong plasmon-exciton coupling.

Defects arise when nematic liquid crystals are under topological constraints at the boundary. Recently the study of defects has drawn a lot of attention. In this paper, we investigate the relationship between two-dimensional defects and three-dimensional defects within nematic liquid crystals confined in a shell under the Landau-de Gennes model. We use a highly accurate spectral method to numerically solve the Landau- de Gennes model to get the detailed static structures of defects. Interestingly, the solution is radial-invariant when the thickness of the shell is sufficiently small. As the shell thickness increase, the solution undergo symmetry break to reconfigure the disclination lines. We study this three-dimensional reconfiguration of disclination lines in detail under different boundary conditions. We also discuss the topological charge of defects in two- and three-dimensional spaces within the tensor model.

Defects in liquid crystals are of great practical importance and theoretical interest. Despite tremendous efforts, predicting the location and transition of defects under various topological constraint and external field remains to be a challenge. We investigate defect patterns of nematic liquid crystals confined in three-dimensional spherical droplet and two-dimensional disk under different boundary conditions, within the Landau-de Gennes model. We implement a spectral method that numerically solves the Landau-de Gennes model with high accuracy, which allows us to study the detailed static structure of defects. We observe five types of defect structures. Among them the 1/2-disclination lines are the most stable structure at low temperature. Inspired by numerical results, we obtain the profile of disclination lines analytically. Moreover, the connection and difference between defect patterns under the Landau-de Gennes model and the Oseen-Frank model are discussed. Finally, four conjectures are made to summarize some important characteristics of defects in the Landau-de Gennes theory. This work is a continuing effort to deepen our understanding on defect patterns in nematic liquid crystals.

Crystalline Bi5NbO10 nanoparticles have been achieved through a modified sol-gel process using a mixture of ethylenediamine and ethanolamine as a solvent. The Bi5NbO10 nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry/thermogravimetry, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Raman spectroscopy. The results showed that well-dispersed 5-60 nm Bi5NbO10 nanoparticles were prepared through heat-treating the precursor at 650C and the high density pellets were obtained at temperatures lower than those commonly employed. The frequency and temperature dependence of the dielectric constant and the electrical conductivity of the Bi5NbO10 solid solutions were investigated in the 0.1 Hz - 1 MHz frequency range. Two distinct relaxation mechanisms were observed in the plots of dielectric loss and the imaginary part of impedance versus frequency in the temperature range of 200-350oC. The dielectric constant and the loss in the low frequency regime were electrode dependent. The ionic conductivity of Bi5NbO10 solid solutions at 700oC is 2.86(ohm m)-1 which is in same order of magnitude for Y2O3-stabilized ZrO2 ceramics at same temperature. These results suggest that Bi5NbO10 is a promising material for an oxygen-ion conductor.

We report a systematic investigation of both three-photon absorption (3PA)spectra and wavelength dispersions of Kerr-type nonlinear refraction in wide-gap semiconductors. The Z-scan measurements are recorded for both ZnO and ZnS with femtosecond laser pulses. While the wavelength dispersions of the Kerr nonlinearity are in agreement with a two-band model, the wavelength dependences of the 3PA are found to be given by (3Ephoton/Eg-1)5/2(3Ephoton/Eg)-9. We also evaluate higher-order nonlinear optical effects including the fifth-order instantaneous nonlinear refraction associated with virtual three-photon transitions, and effectively seventh-order nonlinear processes induced by three-photon-excited free charge carriers. These higher-order nonlinear effects are insignificant with laser excitation irradiances up to 40 GW/cm2. Both pump-probe measurements and three-photon figures of merits demonstrate that ZnO and ZnS should be a promising candidate for optical switching applications at telecommunication wavelengths.
