We report the impact of cap** layers on vanadate based transparent conductive oxides (TCOs) to prolong the thermal stability with a minimal loss of resistivity during heat treatment in ambient environment. In the present study, various protecting layers (amorphous Al2O3, LaAlO3 (LAO), TiO2 grown in base pressure and TiO2 deposited under oxygen partial pressure) are grown in-situ on polycrystalline perovskite SrVO3 (SVO) thin films using Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD). The results show that amorphous LaAlO3 is the most promising protection layer among the oxide layers, to preserve both electrical and optical properties of perovskite SVO films from natural as well as artificial aging. Our present approach for a cap** layer on SVO may address the long-term stability issues of correlated TCOs and would open an opportunity for the future oxide electronics applications.

Nickel oxide superconductors offer an alternative playground for understanding the formation of Cooper pairs in correlated materials such as the famous cuprates. By studying the La$_{n+1}$Ni$_n$O$_{2n+2}$ phase diagram on the basis of hybrid and spin-polarized density functional theory simulations, we reveal the existence of charge and bond ordered (CBO) insulating phases that are quenched by do** effects, ultimately resulting in a metallic phase at the $n=5$ member. Nevertheless, the phonons associated with the CBO identified in the phase diagram remain sufficiently large to mediate Cooper pairs in La$_6$Ni$_5$O$_{12}$, yielding a computed critical temperature between $T_c=11-19$ K consistent with the 13 K observed experimentally in Nd$_6$Ni$_5$O$_{12}$. Thus, in order to identify the superconducting mechanism, extracting the relevant instabilities in the do** phase diagram of superconductors appears critical.

SrVO3 (SVO) is a prospective candidate to replace the conventional indium-tin-oxide (ITO) among the new transparent conducting oxide (TCO) generation. In this study, the structural, electrical, and optical properties of SVO thin films, both epitaxial and polycrystalline, are determined during and after heat treatments in the 150-250 °C range and under ambient environment in order to explore the chemical stability of this material. The use of these relatively low temperatures speeds up the natural ageing of the films, and allows to follow the evolution of their related properties. The combination of techniques rather sensitive to the film surface and of techniques sampling the film volume will emphasize the presence of a surface oxidation evolving in time at low annealing temperatures, whereas the perovskite phase is destroyed throughout the film for treatments above 200 °C. The present study is designed to understand the thermal degradation and long-term stability issues of vanadate-based TCOs, and to identify technologically viable solutions for the application of this group as new TCOs.

Superconductivity is one of the most intriguing properties of matter described by an attractive interaction that bounds electrons into Cooper pairs. To date, the highest critical temperature at ambient conditions is achieved in copper oxides. While layered nickel oxides were long proposed to be analogous to cuprates, superconductivity was only demonstrated in 2019 albeit without clarifying the pairing mechanism. Here we use Density Functional Theory (DFT) to show that superconductivity in nickelates is driven by an electron-phonon coupling originating from a charge ordering. Due to an intrinsic electronic instability in half-doped compounds, Ni$^{1.5+}$ cations dismutate into more stable Ni$^+$ and Ni$^{2+}$ cations, which is accompanied by a bond disproportionation of NiO$_4$ complexes producing an insulating charge ordered state. Once do** suppresses the instability, the bond disproportionation vibration is sufficient to reproduce the key characteristic of nickelates observed experimentally, notably the dome of T$_c$ as a function of do** content. These phenomena are identified if relevant degrees of freedom as well as an exchange correlation functional that sufficiently amends self-interaction errors are involved in the simulations. Finally, despite the presence of correlation effects inherent to $3d$ elements, nickelates superconductors appear similar to non-magnetic bismuth oxide superconductors.

Rare-earth nickelates RNiO$_2$ adopting an infinite-layer phase show superconductivity once La, Pr or Nd are substituted by a divalent cation. Either in the pristine or doped form, these materials are reported to adopt a high symmetry, perfectly symmetric, P4/mmm tetragonal cell. Nevertheless, bulk compounds are scarce, hindering a full understanding of the role of chemical pressure or strain on lattice distortions that in turn could alter magnetic and electronic properties of the 2D nickelates. Here, by performing a full analysis of the prototypical YNiO$_2$ compound with first-principles simulations, we identify that these materials are prone to exhibit O$_4$ group rotations whose type and amplitude are governed by the usual R-to-Ni cation size mismatch. We further show that these rotations can be easily tuned by external stimuli modifying lattice parameters such as pressure or strain. Finally, we reveal that H intercalation is favored for any infinite-layer nickelate member and pushes the propensity of the compounds to exhibit octahedra rotations.

Combining multiple degrees of freedom in strongly-correlated materials such as transition-metal oxides would lead to fascinating magnetic and magnetocaloric features. Herein, the strain effects are used to markedly tailor the magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of PrVO3 thin films. The selection of appropriate thickness and substrate enables us to dramatically decrease the coercive magnetic field from 2.4 T previously observed in sintered PVO3 bulk to 0.05 T for compressive thin films making from the PrVO3 compound a nearly soft magnet. This is associated with a marked enhancement of the magnetic moment and the magnetocaloric effect that reach unusual maximum values of roughly 4.86 uB and 56.8 J/kg K in the magnetic field change of 6 T applied in the sample plane at the cryogenic temperature range (3 K), respectively. This work strongly suggests that taking advantage of different degrees of freedom and the exploitation of multiple instabilities in a nanoscale regime is a promising strategy for unveiling unexpected phases accompanied by a large magnetocaloric effect in oxides.

We present a temperature and do** dependent resonant inelastic X-ray scattering experiment at the V L$_{2,3}$ and O K edges in La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$VO$_3$ for $x=0$ and $x=0.1$. This material is a canonical example of a compound that exhibits a filling control metal-insulator transition and undergoes orbital ordering and antiferromagnetic transitions at low temperature. Temperature dependent measurements at the V L$_{3}$ edge reveal an intra-t$_{2g}$ excitation that blueshifts by 40 meV from room temperature to 30 K at a rate that differs between the para- and antiferromagnetic phases. The lineshape can be partially explained by a purely local model using crystal field theory calculations. At $x=0.1$ the do** is shown to affect the local electronic structure primarily on the O sites, which is in disagreement with a simple Mott-Hubbard picture. We reveal the presence of phonon overtone features at the O K edge, which evidences that the low energy part of the spectrum is dominated by phonon response.

Understanding of the metal-insulator transition (MIT) in correlated transition-metal oxides is a fascinating topic in condensed matter physics and a precise control of such transitions plays a key role in develo** novel electronic devices. Here we report an effective tuning of the MIT in epitaxial SrVO3 (SVO) films by expanding the out-of-plane lattice constant without changing in-plane lattice parameters, through helium ion irradiation. Upon increase of the ion fluence, we observe a MIT with a crossover from metallic to insulating state in SVO films. A combination of transport and magnetoresistance measurements in SVO at low temperatures reveals that the observed MIT is mainly ascribed to electron-electron interactions rather than disorder-induced localization. Moreover, these results are well supported by the combination of density functional theory and dynamical mean field theory (DFT+DMFT) calculations, further confirming the decrease of the bandwidth and the enhanced electron-electron interactions resulting from the expansion of out-of-plane lattice constant. These findings provide new insights into the understanding of MIT in correlated oxides and perspectives for the design of unexpected functional devices based on strongly correlated electrons.

Transition-metal oxides with an ABO$_3$ perovskite structure exhibit strongly entangled structural and electronic degrees of freedom and thus, one expects to unveil exotic phases and properties by acting on the lattice through various external stimuli. Using the Jahn-Teller active praseodymium vanadate Pr$^{3+}$V$^{3+}$O$_3$ compound as a model system, we show that PrVO$_3$ Néel temperature T$_N$ can be raised by 40 K with respect to the bulk when grown as thin films. Using advanced experimental techniques, this enhancement is unambiguously ascribed to a tetragonality resulting from the epitaxial compressive strain experienced by the films. First-principles simulations not only confirm experimental results, but they also reveal that the strain promotes an unprecedented orbital-ordering of the V$^{3+}$ d electrons, strongly favouring antiferromagnetic interactions. These results show that an accurate control of structural aspects is the key for unveiling unexpected phases in oxides.

Transition metal oxide thin films show versatile electrical, magnetic, and thermal properties which can be tailored by deliberately introducing macroscopic grain boundaries via polycrystalline solids. In this study, we focus on the modification of the magnetic and thermal transport properties by fabricating single- and polycrystalline epitaxial SrRuO3 thin films using pulsed laser epitaxy. Using epitaxial stabilization technique with atomically flat polycrystalline SrTiO3 substrate, epitaxial polycrystalline SrRuO3 thin film with crystalline quality of each grain comparable to that of single-crystalline counterpart is realized. In particular, alleviated compressive strain near the grain boundaries due to coalescence is evidenced structurally, which induced enhancement of ferromagnetic ordering of the polycrystalline epitaxial thin film. The structural variations associated with the grain boundaries further reduce the thermal conductivity without deteriorating the electronic transport, and lead to enhanced thermoelectric efficiency in the epitaxial polycrystalline thin films, compared with their single-crystalline counterpart.

We show that the electronic conduction occurs in the metallic LVO layers with a galvanomagnetism typical of a 2D Fermi surface. In addition, a Kondo-like component appears in both the thermal variation of resistivity and the magnetoresistance. Surprisingly, in this system where the STO interface does not contribute to the measured conduction, the Kondo correction is strongly anisotropic. We show that the growth temperature allows a direct control of this contribution. Finally, the key role of vanadium mixed valency stabilized by oxygen vacancies is enlightened.

A high-throughput investigation of local epitaxy (called combinatorial substrate epitaxy) was carried out on Ca$_2$MnO$_4$ Ruddlesden-Popper thin films of six thicknesses (from 20 to 400 nm), all deposited on isostructural polycrystalline Sr$_2$TiO$_4$ substrates. Electron backscatter diffraction revealed grain-over-grain local epitaxial growth for all films, resulting in a single orientation relationship ($OR$) for each substrate-film grain pair. Two preferred epitaxial $ORs$ accounted for more than 90 \% of all ORs on 300 different microcrystals, based on analyzing 50 grain pairs for each thickness. The unit cell over unit cell $OR$ ([100][001]$_{film}$ $\parallel$ [100][001]$_{substrate}$, or $OR1$) accounted for approximately 30 \% of each film. The $OR$ that accounted for 60 \% of each film ([100][001]$_{film}$ $\parallel$ [100][010]$_{substrate}$, or $OR2$) corresponds to a rotation from $OR1$ by 90$^{\circ}$ about the a-axis. $OR2$ is strongly favored for substrate orientations in the center of the stereographic triangle, and $OR1$ is observed for orientations very close to (001) or to those near the edge connecting (100) and (110). While $OR1$ should be lower in energy, the majority observation of $OR2$ implies kinetic hindrances decrease the frequency of $OR1$. Persistent grain over grain growth and the absence of variations of the $OR$ frequencies with thickness implies that the growth competition is finished within the first few \si{\nano\meter}, and local epitaxy persists thereafter during growth.

Comparison between single- and the poly-crystalline structures provides essential information on the role of long-range translational symmetry and grain boundaries. In particular, by comparing single- and poly-crystalline transition metal oxides (TMOs), one can study intriguing physical phenomena such as electronic and ionic conduction at the grain boundaries, phonon propagation, and various domain properties. In order to make an accurate comparison, however, both single- and poly-crystalline samples should have the same quality, e.g., stoichiometry, crystallinity, thickness, etc. Here, by studying the surface properties of atomically flat poly-crystalline SrTiO3 (STO), we propose an approach to simultaneously fabricate both single- and poly-crystalline epitaxial TMO thin films on STO substrates. In order to grow TMOs epitaxially with atomic precision, an atomically flat, single-terminated surface of the substrate is a prerequisite. We first examined (100), (110), and (111) oriented single-crystalline STO surfaces, which required different annealing conditions to achieve atomically flat surfaces, depending on the surface energy. A poly-crystalline STO surface was then prepared at the optimum condition for which all the domains with different crystallographic orientations could be successfully flattened. Based on our atomically flat poly-crystalline STO substrates, we envision expansion of the studies regarding theTMOdomains and grain boundaries.

The local epitaxial growth of pulsed laser deposited Ca$_2$MnO$_4$ films on polycrystalline spark plasma sintered Sr$_2$TiO$_4$ substrates was investigated to determine phase formation and preferred epitaxial orientation relationships ($ORs$) for isostructural Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) heteroepitaxy, further develo** the high-throughput synthetic approach called Combinatorial Substrate Epitaxy (CSE). Both grazing incidence X-ray diffraction and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) patterns of the film and substrate were indexable as single-phase RP-structured compounds. The optimal growth temperature (between 650 $^{\circ}$C and 800 $^{\circ}$C) was found to be 750 $^{\circ}$C using the maximum value of the average image quality (IQ) of the backscattered diffraction patterns. Films grew in a grain-over-grain pattern such that each Ca$_2$MnO$_4$ grain had a single $OR$ with the Sr$_2$TiO$_4$ grain on which it grew. Three primary $ORs$ described 47 out of 49 grain pairs that covered nearly all of RP orientation space. The first $OR$, found for 20 of the 49, was the expected RP unit-cell over RP unit-cell $OR$, expressed as [100][001]$_{film}$||[100][001]$_{sub}$. The other two $ORs$ were essentially rotated from the first by 90$^{\circ}$, with one (observed for 17 of 49 pairs) being rotated about the [100] and the other (observed for 10 of 49 pairs) being rotated about the [110] (and not exactly by 90$^{\circ}$). These results indicate that only a small number of $ORs$ are needed to describe isostructural RP heteroepitaxy and further demonstrate the potential of CSE in the design and growth of a wide range of complex functional oxides.

A series of 100 nm LaVO3 thin films have been synthesized on (001)-oriented SrTiO3 substrates using the pulsed laser deposition technique, and the effects of growth temperature are analyzed. Transport properties reveal a large electronic mobility and a non-linear Hall effect at low temperature. In addition, a cross-over from a semiconducting state at high-temperature to a metallic state at low-temperature is observed, with a clear enhancement of the metallic character as the growth temperature increases. Optical absorption measurements combined with the two-bands analysis of the Hall effect show that the metallicity is induced by the diffusion of oxygen vacancies in the SrTiO3 substrate. These results allow to understand that the film/substrate heterostructure behaves as an original semiconducting-metallic parallel resistor, and electronic transport properties are consistently explained.

Rare earth perovskite oxides constitute a wide family of materials presenting functional proper- ties strongly coupled to their crystalline structure. Here, we report on the experimental results on epitaxial PrVO3 deposited on SrTiO3 single crystal substrates by pulsed laser deposition. By com- bining advanced structural characterization tools, we have observed that the PVO unrelaxed film structure grown on STO, is characterized by two kinds of oriented domains whose epitaxial relations are: (i) PrVO3[110]o//SrTiO3[001]c and PrVO3[001]o//SrTiO3[100]c, (ii) PrVO3[110]o//SrTiO3[001]c and PrVO3[001]o//SrTiO3[010]c. We have also measured reciprocal space maps. From these results, we have determined that the PVO film epitaxy on STO imposes a lowering of the PVO structure symmetry from orthorhombic (Pbnm) to monoclinic (P21/m). We show, the nominal strain induced by the substrate being constant, that the obtained film structure depends on both growth oxygen and temperature. Thus, by finely controlling the deposition conditions, we could tune the strain experienced by PrVO3 thin film. These results show an alternative to substrate mismatch as a path to control the strain and structure of PVO films.

While structure refinement is routinely achieved for simple bulk materials, the accurate structural determination still poses challenges for thin films due on the one hand to the small amount of material deposited on the thicker substrate and, on the other hand, to the intricate epitaxial relationships that substantially complicate standard X-ray diffraction analysis. Using a combined approach, we analyze the crystal structure of epitaxial LaVO$_3$ thin films grown on (100)-oriented SrTiO$_3$. Transmission electron microscopy study reveals that the thin films are epitaxially grown on SrTiO$_3$ and points to the presence of 90$^{\circ}$ oriented domains. The map** of the reciprocal space obtained by high resolution X-ray diffraction permits refinement of the lattice parameters. We finally deduce that strain accommodation imposes a monoclinic structure onto the LaVO$_3$ film. The reciprocal space maps are numerically processed and the extracted data computed to refine the atomic positions, which are compared to those obtained using precession electron diffraction tomography. We discuss the obtained results and our methodological approach as a promising thin film structure determination for complex systems.

Multiferroic BiFeO3 (BFO) / La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 heterostructured thin films were grown by pulsed laser deposition on polished spark plasma sintered LaAlO3 (LAO) polycrystalline substrates. Both polycrystalline LAO substrates and BFO films were locally characterized using electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD), which confirmed the high-quality local epitaxial growth on each substrate grain. Piezoforce microscopy was used to image and switch the piezo-domains, and the results are consistent with the relative orientation of the ferroelectric variants with the surface normal. This high-throughput synthesis process opens the routes towards wide survey of electronic properties as a function of crystalline orientation in complex oxide thin film synthesis.

A \ce{(LaVO_3)_6/(SrVO_3)_3} superlattice is studied with a combination of sub-Å resolved scanning transmission electron microscopy and monochromated electron energy-loss spectroscopy. The V oxidation state is mapped with atomic spatial resolution enabling to investigate electronic reconstruction at the \ce{LaVO_3}/\ce{SrVO_3} interfaces. Surprisingly, asymmetric charge distribution is found at adjacent chemically symmetric interfaces. The local structure is proposed and simulated with double channeling calculation which agrees qualitatively with our experiment. We demonstrate that local strain asymmetry is the likely cause of the electronic asymmetry of the interfaces. The electronic reconstruction at the interfaces extends much further than the chemical composition, varying from 0.5 to 1.2 nm. This distance corresponds to the length of charge transfer previously found in the \ce{(LaVO_3)_m}/\ce{(SrVO_3)_n} metal/insulating and the \ce{(LaAlO_3)_m}/\ce{(SrTiO_3)_n} insulating/insulating interfaces.

Properties of complex oxide thin films can be tuned over a range of values as a function of mismatch, composition, orientation, and structure. Here, we report a strategy for growing structured epitaxial thermoelectric thin films leading to improved Seebeck coefficient. Instead of using single-crystal sapphire substrates to support epitaxial growth, Ca$_3$Co$_4$O$_9$ films are deposited, using the Pulsed Laser Deposition technique, onto Al$_2$O$_3$ polycrystalline substrates textured by Spark Plasma Sintering. The structural quality of the 2000 Åthin film was investigated by Transmission Electron Microscopy, while the crystallographic orientation of the grains and the epitaxial relationships were determined by Electron Back Scatter Diffraction. The use of a polycrystalline ceramic template leads to structured films that are in good local epitaxial registry. The Seebeck coefficient is about 170 $μ$V/K at 300 K, a typical value of misfit material with low carrier density. This high-throughput process, called combinatorial substrate epitaxy, appears to facilitate the rational tuning of functional oxide films, opening a route to the epitaxial synthesis of high quality complex oxides.

(CaCuO2)m/(La0.7Sr0.3MnO3)n superlattices, consisting of the infinite layers cuprate CaCuO2 and the optimally doped manganite La1-xSrxMnO3, were grown by pulsed laser deposition. The transport properties are dominated by the manganite block. X-Ray Absorption spectroscopy measurements show a clear evidence of an orbital reconstruction at the interface, ascribed to the hybridization between the Cu 3d3z2-r2 and the Mn 3d3z2-r2 orbitals via interface apical oxygen ions. Such a mechanism localizes holes at the interfaces, thus preventing charge transfer to the CaCuO2 block. Some charge (holes) transfer occurs toward the La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 block in strongly oxidized superlattices, contributing to the suppression of the magnetotransport properties.

Electronic structure and optical band gap of CoFe2O4 thin films grown on (001) oriented LaAlO3 have been investigated. Surprisingly, these films show additional Raman modes at room temperature as compared to a bulk spinel structure. The splitting of Raman modes is explained by considering the short-range ordering of Co and Fe cations in octahedral site of spinel structure. In addition, an expansion of band-gap is observed with the reduction of film thickness, which is explained by the quantum size effect and misfit dislocation. Such results provide interesting insights for the growth of spinel phases.

Interestingly, three structural variants are simultaneously stabilized within the film. While txo of them are consistent with the existing phases in the bulk-below and above the 420 K structural transition, a different phase is identified. The existence of various structures has been attributed to the inhomogeneous distribution of local strains and oxygens resulting from a minimization of the strain-energy at the interface. These findings will open the route to a better understanding of Bi-based perovskites and metastable phases.

Based on the Hubbard model of strongly correlated systems, a reduction in the bandwidth of the electrons can yield a substantial change in the properties of the material. One method to modify the bandwidth is geometrically confined do**, i.e. the introduction of a (thin) dopant layer in a material. In this paper, the magnetic properties of LaVO$_3$/SrVO$_3$ superlattices, in which the geometrically confined do** is produced by a one monolayer thick SrVO$_3$ film, are presented. In contrast to the solid solution La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$VO$_3$, such superlattices have a finite magnetization up to room temperature. Furthermore, the total magnetization of the superlattice depends on the thickness of the LaVO$_3$ layer, indicating an indirect coupling of the magnetization that emerges at adjacent dopant layers. Our results show that geometrically confined do**, like it can be achieved in superlattices, reveals a way to induce otherwise unaccessible phases, possibly even with a large temperature scale.

Using first principle calculations we showed that the Curie temperature of manganites thin films can be increased by far more than an order of magnitude by applying appropriate strains. Our main breakthrough is that the control of the orbital ordering responsible for the spectacular $T_C$ increase cannot be imposed by the substrate only. Indeed, the strains, first applied by the substrate, need to be maintained over the growth direction by the alternation of the manganite layers with another appropriate material. Following these theoretical findings, we synthesized such super-lattices and verified our theoretical predictions.

Eu1-xYxMnO3 exhibits, unlike other magnetoelectric systems, very distinctive features. Its magnetoelectric properties is driven by the magnetic spin of the Mn3+ ion, but they can be drastically changed by varying the content of Y3+, which it does not carry any magnetic moment. Though the x = 0.40 composition has been studied extensively, some basic questions still remain to be thoroughly understood. Thus, this work is aimed at studying some of its polar properties and their magnetic field dependence as well. The experimental results here reported have shown that this material is very easily polarisable under external electric fields, and so, whenever the polarization is obtained from time integration of the displacement currents, an induced polarization is superposed to the spontaneous one, eventually masking the occurrence of ferroelectricity. We have found clear evidence for the influence of a magnetic field in the polar properties of Eu0.6Y0.4MnO3. The study of electric polarization of Eu0.6Y0.4MnO3 under an external magnetic field yields a value with the same order of magnitude of the remanent polarization determined from polarization reversal experiments. The comparison of the magnetic induced changes on the polarization obtained in polycrystalline samples and single crystals confirms the threshold magnetic field value for the polarization rotation from the a- to the c-direction, and evidencing the importance of the granular nature of the samples in the polar response to magnetic field.

Temperature and fluence dependence of the transient photoinduced reflectivity and the magnetooptical Kerr angle was measured in two Pr0.6Ca0.4MnO3 thin films subject to tensile and compressive substrate-induced strain. A photoinduced transient ferromagnetic metallic (TFM) phase is found to form below ~60K and ~40K in the substrate-strained and substrate-compressed film, respectively.
From the hysteresis loops a difference in the TFM cluster sizes and amount of photomodulation is observed at low temperatures and low excitation fluences in the films with different strain. Surprisingly, the characteristic timescale for the TFM phase photomodulation is virtually strain independent. At high excitation fluences, the cluster sizes and amount of photomodulation are independent on the substrate-induced strain.

The time resolved Magnetooptical Kerr effect in the substrate-strain-induced insulating ferromagnetic phase in (Pr$_{0.6}$Ca$_{0.4}$)MnO$_3$ thin films on two different substrates was measured in a magnetic field up to 1.1T. The photoinduced Kerr rotation and ellipticity show remarkably different magnetic-field dependence. From the comparison of the magnetic field dependencies of the photoinduced and static Kerr rotation and ellipticity we conclude that a transient ferromagnetic metallic phase, embedded within the insulating ferromagnetic phase, is created upon the photoexcitation at low temperatures. A comparison of temporal dependence of the photoinduced Kerr signals with the photoinduced reflectivity indicates the change of the fractions of the phases takes place on a timescale of ten picoseconds independent of the substrate.

The structure and microstructure of this metastable cobaltite is further discussed and compared to related bulk materials based on our transmission electron microscopy investigations

The variation of leakage current and macroscopic polarization with periodicity was studied. Piezo force microscopy studies revealed the presence of large ferroelectric domains in the case of BiFeO3 thin films while a size reduction in ferroelectric domains was observed in the case of superlattice structures. The results show that the modification of ferroelectric domains through superlattice, could provide an additional control on engineering the domain wall mediated functional properties.

The local structure measured by the temperature dependent polarized Ni K-edge EXAFS shows significant distortions in the NiO2 planes. These local distortions could be reasonable cause of high dielectric permittivity of the title system (e=100 at 5K) with the charge ordering in this system being a ferroelectric-like second order transition.

The surface texture, structural, electrical, and magnetic properties of the LaRh1/2Mn1/2O3 films was examined as a function of the oxygen concentration during deposition. While an elevated oxygen concentration yields thin films with optimal magnetic properties, slightly lower oxygen concentrations result in films with improved texture and crystallinity.

The temporal evolution of the resistance shows the out-of-equilibrium nature of this hysteresis with a very slow relaxation. Partial cycles reveal not only a behavior consistent with phase coexistence, but also the presence of spinodal temperatures which are largely separated. The temperature spreading of phase coexistence is consistent with the bulk phase diagram in the pressure-temperature plane, confirming that the film is effectively under an effective pressure induced by the substrate.

The temperature dependent resistivity of two Pr1-xCaxMnO3 (x=0.5 and 0.4) thin films grown on LaAlO3 has been studied as a function of hydrostatic pressure (up to 2.5 GPa) and magnetic field (up to 9T). Both samples show a monotonic decrease in the resistivity with an increase in pressure, corresponding to a change of -35% at 2.5 GPa. No pressure induced metal-to-insulator transition was observed in the temperature-dependent resistivity. The non-trivial interaction between high pressure and magnetic field reveals that the effect of pressure cannot be simply rescaled to that of a specific field, as has been reported for the corresponding bulk material. We propose an interpretation of the data based on phase separation, where two different insulating phases coexist: the charge ordered phase, which is sensitive to both magnetic field and pressure, and a second insulating phase that can be tuned by magnetic field. Such a result demonstrates that phase separation can be manipulated in thin films by independent application of magnetic field and/or external pressure.

The spectacular metal-to-insulator transition of V2O3 can be progressively suppressed in thin film samples. Evidence for phase separation was observed using microbridges as a mesoscopic probe of transport properties where the same film possesses domains that exhibit a metal-to-insulator transition with clear first order features or remain metallic down to low temperatures. A simple model consisting of two parallel resistors can be used to quantify a phase coexistence scenario explaining the measured macroscopic transport properties. The interaction between film and substrate is the most plausible candidate to explain this extended phase coexistence as shown by a correlation between the transport properties and the structural data.

Bulk magnetization in Pr_{0.6}Ca_{0.4}MnO_3 thin films with tensile (SrTiO_3) and compressive (LaAlO_3) substrate-induced strain is compared to the magnetooptical Kerr effect (MOKE) measurements. In the absence of an external magnetic field, in both films, a stable ferromagnetic insulating majority phase coexists with an antiferromagnetic insulating phase below ~120K. MOKE measurements indicate that at 5K a metastable ferromagnetic metallic (FM) phase is formed at the surface of the stretched film in a magnetic field below 1.1T already, while in the bulk the FM phase starts to form in the field above ~4T in both films.
