The interplay of electric charge, spin, and orbital polarizations, coherently driven by picosecond long oscillations of light fields in spin-orbit coupled systems, is the foundation of emerging terahertz spintronics and orbitronics. The essential rules for how terahertz light interacts with these systems in a nonlinear way are still not understood. In this work, we demonstrate a universally applicable electronic nonlinearity originating from spin-orbit interactions in conducting materials, wherein the interplay of light-induced spin and orbital textures manifests. We utilized terahertz harmonic generation spectroscopy to investigate the nonlinear dynamics over picosecond timescales in various transition metal films. We found that the terahertz harmonic generation efficiency scales with the spin Hall conductivity in the studied films, while the phase takes two possible values (shifted by π), depending on the d-shell filling. These findings elucidate the fundamental mechanisms governing non-equilibrium spin and orbital polarization dynamics at terahertz frequencies, which is relevant for potential applications of terahertz spin- and orbital-based devices.

The nonlinear Hall effect (NLHE) with time-reversal symmetry constitutes the appearance of a transverse voltage quadratic in the applied electric field. It is a second-order electronic transport phenomenon that induces frequency doubling and occurs in non-centrosymmetric crystals with large Berry curvature -- an emergent magnetic field encoding the geometric properties of electronic wavefunctions. The design of (opto)electronic devices based on the NLHE is however hindered by the fact that this nonlinear effect typically appears at low temperatures and in complex compounds characterized by Dirac or Weyl electrons. Here, we show a strong room temperature NLHE in the centrosymmetric elemental material bismuth synthesized in the form of technologically relevant polycrystalline thin films. The ($1\,1\,1$) surface electrons of this material are equipped with a Berry curvature triple that activates side jumps and skew scatterings generating nonlinear transverse currents. We also report a boost of the zero field nonlinear transverse voltage in arc-shaped bismuth stripes due to an extrinsic geometric classical counterpart of the NLHE. This electrical frequency doubling in curved geometries is then extended to optical second harmonic generation in the terahertz (THz) spectral range. The strong nonlinear electrodynamical responses of the surface states are further demonstrated by a concomitant highly efficient THz third harmonic generation which we achieve in a broad range of frequencies in Bi and Bi-based heterostructures. Combined with the possibility of growth on CMOS-compatible and mechanically flexible substrates, these results highlight the potential of Bi thin films for THz (opto)electronic applications.

Understanding spin-lattice interactions in antiferromagnets is one of the most fundamental issues at the core of the recently emerging and booming fields of antiferromagnetic spintronics and magnonics. Recently, coherent nonlinear spin-lattice coupling was discovered in an antiferromagnet which opened the possibility to control the nonlinear coupling strength and thus showing a novel pathway to coherently control magnon-phonon dynamics. Here, utilizing intense narrow band terahertz (THz) pulses and tunable magnetic fields up to 7 T, we experimentally realize the conditions of the Fermi magnon-phonon resonance in antiferromagnetic $CoF_{2}$. These conditions imply that both the spin and the lattice anharmonicities harvest energy transfer between the subsystems, if the magnon eigenfrequency $f_{m}$ is twice lower than the frequency of the phonon $2f_{m}=f_{ph}$. Performing THz pump-infrared probe spectroscopy in conjunction with simulations, we explore the coupled magnon-phonon dynamics in the vicinity of the Fermi-resonance and reveal the corresponding fingerprints of an impulsive THz-induced response. This study focuses on the role of nonlinearity in spin-lattice interactions, providing insights into the control of coherent magnon-phonon energy exchange.

Ultrafast optical control of quantum systems is an emerging field of physics. In particular, the possibility of light-driven superconductivity with ultrashort laser pulses has attracted much of attention. To identify non-equilibrium superconductivity, it is necessary to measure fingerprints of superconductivity on ultrafast timescales. Recently non-linear THz third harmonic generation (THG) was shown to directly probe the collective degrees of freedoms of the superconducting condensate including particularly the Higgs mode. Here we extend this idea to light-driven non-equilibrium states in superconducting La2-xSrxCuO4 establishing a protocol to access the transient superconducting (SC) order-parameter fluctuations. We perform an optical pump-THz-THG drive experiment and use a two-dimensional spectroscopy approach to disentangle the driven third-harmonic response of optically excited quasiparticles and the pure condensate response. In this way, 2D spectroscopy separately probes both the ultrafast pair breaking dynamics and transient pairing amplitude of the condensate.

2H-NbSe2 is an archetypal system in which superconductivity and charge-density-wave (CDW) coexist and compete macroscopically with each other. In particular, this interplay also manifests in their dynamical fluctuations. As a result, the superconducting amplitude fluctuations (i.e. Higgs mode) is pushed below the quasiparticle continuum, allowing it to become a coherent excitation observable by Raman scattering. In the present study, we coherently drive the collective oscillations of the two orders and visualize their interplay in the driven states in the time domain. We find that both collective modes contribute to terahertz third harmonic generation (THG) and the THG signals interfere below Tc, leading to an anti-resonance of the integrated THG signal. The dynamical Ginzburg-Landau model suggests that around the anti-resonance a periodic energy transfer between the driven Higgs oscillations and the driven CDW oscillations is possible. In addition to 2H-NbSe2, we also studied an underdoped La2-xSrxCuO4 (x ~ 0.12) driven beyond the perturbative regime of THG. A similar interference between two sources of THG is observed below Tc. While there might be additional sources of THG in these experiments, our results illustrate the roles of coupled modes in the terahertz THG process and the tantalizing possibility of coherent control via such couplings.

The observation of spinon excitations in the $S=\frac{1}{2}$ triangular antiferromagnet Ca$_3$ReO$_5$Cl$_2$ reveals a quasi-one-dimensional (1D) nature of magnetic correlations, in spite of the nominally 2D magnetic structure. This phenomenon is known as frustration-induced dimensional reduction. Here, we present high-field electron spin resonance spectroscopy and magnetization studies of Ca$_3$ReO$_5$Cl$_2$, allowing us not only to refine spin-Hamiltonian parameters, but also to investigate peculiarities of its low-energy spin dynamics. We argue that the presence of the uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) shifts the spinon continuum in momentum space and, as a result, opens a zero-field gap at the $Γ$ point. We observed this gap directly. The shift is found to be consistent with the structural modulation in the ordered state, suggesting this material as a perfect model triangular-lattice system, where a pure DMI-spiral ground state can be realized.

We report on high-order harmonic generation in the two-band superconductor MgB$_2$ driven by intense terahertz electromagnetic pulses. Third- and fifth-order harmonics are resolved in time domain and investigated as a function of temperature and in applied magnetic fields crossing the superconducting phase boundary. The high-order harmonics in the superconducting phase reflects nonequilibrium dynamics of the superconducting order parameter in MgB$_2$, which is probed via nonlinear coupling to the terahertz field. The observed temperature and field dependence of the nonlinear response allows to establish the superconducting phase diagram.

Despite decades of search for the pairing boson in cuprate high-Tc superconductors, its identity still remains debated to date. For this reason, spectroscopic signatures of electron-boson interactions in cuprates have always been a center of attention. For example, the kinks in the quasiparticle dispersion observed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies have motivated a decade-long investigation of electron-phonon as well as electron-paramagnon interactions in cuprates. On the other hand, the overlap between the charge-order correlations and the pseudogap in the cuprate phase diagram has also generated discussions about the potential link between them. In the present study, we provide a fresh perspective on these intertwined interactions using the novel approach of Higgs spectroscopy, i.e. an investigation of the amplitude oscillations of the superconducting order parameter driven by a terahertz radiation. Uniquely for cuprates, we observe a Fano interference of its dynamically driven Higgs mode with another collective mode, which we reveal to be charge density wave fluctuations from an extensive do**- and magnetic field-dependent study. This finding is further corroborated by a mean field model in which we describe the microscopic mechanism underlying the interaction between the two orders. Our work demonstrates Higgs spectroscopy as a novel and powerful technique for investigating intertwined orders and microscopic processes in unconventional superconductors.

For magnetic fields applied along the easy magnetic axis, the excitation gap softens and vanishes at the spin-flop field of BSF = 32 T before hardening again at higher fields. In addition, for B smaller than BSF we observe a resonance mode assigned to excitations due to Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM)-interactions, thereby evidencing sizable DM interaction of approx 150 micro eV in LiFePO4. Both the magnetisation and the excitations up to high magnetic fields are described in terms of a mean-field theory model which extends recent zero field inelastic neutron scattering results. Our results imply that magnetic interactions as well as magnetic anisotropy have a sizable quadratic field dependence which we attribute to significant magnetostriction.

In zero field, the Cu$^{2+}$-moments in the antiferromagnetic chains are oriented along the $c$-axis with a small off-axis tilt. For a field applied parallel to the $c$-axis, the magnetization shows a spin-flop-like transition at $B^*=12.2~$T at $1.5~$K. Neutron diffraction experiments show a smooth behavior in the intensities of the magnetic reflections without any change in the periodicity of the magnetic structure. Bulk and microscopic observations are well described by a model of ferromagnetically coupled antiferromagnetic $XXZ$ spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ chains, taking into account a change of the local easy-axis direction. We demonstrate that the magnetic structure evolves smoothly from a deformed Néel state at low fields to a deformed spin-flop state in a high field via a strong crossover around $B^*$. The results are generalized for different values of interchain coupling and spin anisotropy.

Nonlinear optics is an increasingly important field for scientific and technological applications, owing to its relevance and potential for optical and optoelectronic technologies. Currently, there is an active search for suitable nonlinear material systems with efficient conversion and small material footprint. Ideally, the material system should allow for chip-integration and room-temperature operation. Two-dimensional materials are highly interesting in this regard. Particularly promising is graphene, which has demonstrated an exceptionally large nonlinearity in the terahertz regime. Yet, the light-matter interaction length in two-dimensional materials is inherently minimal, thus limiting the overall nonlinear-optical conversion efficiency. Here we overcome this challenge using a metamaterial platform that combines graphene with a photonic grating structure providing field enhancement. We measure terahertz third-harmonic generation in this metamaterial and obtain an effective third-order nonlinear susceptibility with a magnitude as large as 3$\cdot$10$^{-8}$m$^2$/V$^2$, or 21 esu, for a fundamental frequency of 0.7 THz. This nonlinearity is 50 times larger than what we obtain for graphene without grating. Such an enhancement corresponds to third-harmonic signal with an intensity that is three orders of magnitude larger due to the grating. Moreover, we demonstrate a field conversion efficiency for the third harmonic of up to $\sim$1% using a moderate field strength of $\sim$30 kV/cm. Finally we show that harmonics beyond the third are enhanced even more strongly, allowing us to observe signatures of up to the 9$^{\rm th}$ harmonic. Grating-graphene metamaterials thus constitute an outstanding platform for commercially viable, CMOS compatible, room temperature, chip-integrated, THz nonlinear conversion applications.

Topologically-protected surface states present rich physics and promising spintronic, optoelectronic and photonic applications that require a proper understanding of their ultrafast carrier dynamics. Here, we investigate these dynamics in topological insulators (TIs) of the bismuth and antimony chalcogenide family, where we isolate the response of Dirac fermions at the surface from the response of bulk carriers by combining photoexcitation with below-bandgap terahertz (THz) photons with TI samples with varying Fermi level, including one sample with the Fermi level located within the bandgap. We identify distinctly faster relaxation of charge carriers in the topologically-protected Dirac surface states (few hundred femtoseconds), compared to bulk carriers (few picoseconds). In agreement with such fast cooling dynamics, we observe THz harmonic generation without any saturation effects for increasing incident fields, unlike graphene which exhibits strong saturation. This opens up promising avenues for increased THz nonlinear conversion efficiencies, and high-bandwidth optoelectronic and spintronic information and communication applications.

From a comparison of theoretical modeling to results of bulk magnetometry, specific heat, $μ^+$SR, ESR, and NMR spectroscopy, this material is determined as an excellent realization of the 2D square-lattice $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with a moderate intraplane nearest-neighbor exchange coupling of $J/k_\mathrm{B} = 6.80(5)$ K, and an extremely small interlayer interaction of about 1 mK. At zero field, the bulk magnetometry reveals a temperature-driven crossover of spin correlations from isotropic to $XY$ type, caused by the presence of a weak intrinsic easy-plane anisotropy. A transition to long-range order, driven by the low-temperature $XY$ anisotropy under the influence of the interlayer coupling, occurs at $T_\mathrm{N} = 1.38(2)$ K, as revealed by $μ^+$SR. In applied magnetic fields, our $^1$H-NMR data reveal a strong increase of the magnetic anisotropy, manifested by a pronounced enhancement of the transition temperature to commensurate long-range order at $T_\mathrm{N} =2.8$ K and 7 T.

We report detailed magnetometry and high-frequency electron spin resonance (HF-ESR) measurements which allow detailed investigation on Li-Fe antisite disorder in single-crystalline LiFePO$_4$, i.e., exchange of Fe$^{2+}$- and Li$^+$-ions. The data imply that magnetic moments of Fe$^{2+}$-ions at Li-positions do not participate in long-range antiferromagnetic order in LiFePO$_4$ but form quasi-free moments. Anisotropy axes of the magnetic moments at antisite defects are attached to the main crystallographic directions. The local character of these moments is confirmed by associated linear resonance branches detected by HF-ESR studies. Magnetic anisotropy shows up in significant zero-field splittings of $Δ= 220(3)$~GHz, $Δ'\sim50$~GHz and a highly anisotropic $g$-factor, i.e., $g_\mathrm{a} = 1.4$, $g_\mathrm{b} = 2.0$, and $g_\mathrm{c} = 6.3$. We demonstrate a general method to precisely determine Fe-antisite disorder in LiFePO$_4$ from magnetic studies which implies a density of paramagnetic Fe$^{2+}$-ions at Li-positions of 0.53\%.

Recently, a Verwey-type transition in the mixed-valence alkali sesquioxide Cs$_4$O$_6$ was deduced from the charge ordering of molecular peroxide O$_2^{2-}$ and superoxide O$_2^-$ anions accompanied by the structural transformation and a dramatic change in electronic conductivity [Adler et al, Sci. Adv 4, eaap7581 (2018)]. Here, we report that in the sister compound Rb$_4$O$_6$ a similar Verwey-type charge ordering transition is strongly linked to O$_2^-$ orbital and spin dynamics. On cooling, a powder neutron diffraction experiment reveals a charge ordering and a cubic-to-tetragonal transition at $T_{\rm CO}=290$ K, which is followed by a further structural instability at $T_{\rm s}=92$ K that involves an additional reorientation of magnetic O$_2^-$ anions. Magnetic resonance techniques supported by density functional theory computations suggest the emergence of a peculiar type of $π^*$-orbital ordering of the magnetically active O$_2^-$ units, which promotes the formation of a quantum spin state composed of weakly coupled spin dimers. These results reveal that similarly as in 3$d$ transition metal compounds, also in in the $π^*$ open-shell alkali sesquioxides the interplay between Jahn-Teller-like electron-lattice coupling and Kugel-Khomskii-type superexchange determines the nature of orbital ordering and the magnetic ground state.

We report on low-temperature heat-transport properties of the spin-1/2 triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$. Broad maxima in the thermal conductivity along the three principal axes, observed at about 5 K, are interpreted in terms of the Debye model, including the phonon Umklapp scattering. For thermal transport along the $b$ axis, we observed a pronounced field-dependent anomaly, close to the transition into the three-dimensional long-range-ordered state. No such anomalies were found for the transport along the $a$ and $c$ directions. We argue that this anisotropic behavior is related to an additional heat-transport channel through magnetic excitations, that can best propagate along the direction of the largest exchange interaction. Besides, peculiarities of the heat transport of Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$ in magnetic fields up to the saturation field and above are discussed.

We report the synthesis and characterization of a new quantum magnet [2-[Bis(2-hydroxybenzyl)aminomethyl]pyridine]Ni(II)-trimer (BHAP-Ni3) in single-crystalline form. Our combined experimental and theoretical investigations reveal an exotic spin state that stabilizes a robust 2/3 magnetization plateau between 7 and 20 T in an external magnetic field. AC-susceptibility measurements show the absence of any magnetic order/glassy state down to 60 mK. The magnetic ground state is disordered and specific-heat measurements reveal the gapped nature of the spin excitations. Most interestingly, our theoretical modeling suggests that the 2/3 magnetization plateau emerges due to the interplay between antiferromagnetic Heisenberg and biquadratic exchange interactions within nearly isolated spin $S$ = 1 triangles.

Single crystal samples of the frustrated quasi one-dimensional quantum magnet Rb$_{2}$Cu$_{2}$Mo$_{3}$O$_{12}$ are investigated by magnetic, thermodynamic, and electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements. Quantum phase transitions between the gapped, magnetically ordered and fully saturated phases are observed. Surprisingly, the former has a distinctive three-dimensional character, while the latter is dominated by one-dimensional quantum spin fluctuations. The entire $H$-$T$ phase diagram is mapped out and found to be substantially anisotropic. In particular, the lower critical fields differ by over 50\% depending on the direction of applied field, while the upper ones are almost isotropic, as is the magnetization above saturation. The ESR spectra are strongly dependent on field orientation and point to a helical structure with a rigidly defined spin rotation plane.

Formation of the clusters with non-zero net magnetization is confirmed; the cluster-cluster interaction is evidenced by the concentration dependence of ESR absorption. High-temperature spin-relaxation time was found to increase with non-magnetic dilution. The ESR linewidth analysis proves that the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction remains the dominant spin-relaxation channel in diluted DIMPY. Experimental data indicate that the dilution results in the weakening of the effective DM interaction, which can be interpreted as total suppression of DM interaction in the close vicinity of impurity atom.

The observed excitation spectrum is found to be inconsistent with a simple square lattice model previously proposed for this material. At least four distinct exchange coupling constants are required to reproduce the measured spin wave dispersion. The degree of magnetic frustration is correspondingly revised and found to be substantially smaller than in all previous estimates.

We present high-field electron spin resonance (ESR) studies of the honeycomb-lattice material $α$-RuCl$_3$, a prime candidate to exhibit Kitaev physics. Two modes of antiferromagnetic resonance were detected in the zigzag ordered phase, with magnetic field applied in the $ab$ plane. A very rich excitation spectrum was observed in the field-induced quantum paramagnetic phase. The obtained data are compared with results of recent numerical calculations, strongly suggesting a very unconventional multiparticle character of the spin dynamics in $α$-RuCl$_3$. The frequency-field diagram of the lowest-energy ESR mode is found consistent with the behavior of the field-induced energy gap, revealed by thermodynamic measurements.

Elucidating the interaction between magnetic moments and itinerant carriers is an important step to spintronic applications. Here, we investigate magnetic and transport properties in d0 ferromagnetic SiC single crystals prepared by postimplantation pulsed laser annealing. Magnetic moments are contributed by the p states of carbon atoms, but their magnetic circular dichroism is different from that in semi-insulating SiC samples. The anomalous Hall effect and negative magnetoresistance indicate the influence of d0 spin order on free carriers. The ferromagnetism is relatively weak in N-implanted SiC compared with that in Al-implanted SiC after annealing. The results suggest that d0 magnetic moments and itinerant carriers can interact with each other, which will facilitate the development of SiC spintronic devices with d0 ferromagnetism.

Zero-field muon spin rotation and electron spin resonance probes disclose a successive crossover from a paramagnetic through a spin-liquid-like into a magnetically ordered state with decreasing temperature. More significantly, the two-magnon Raman response obeys a T-linear scaling relation in its peak energy, linewidth and intensity. This critical scaling behavior presents an experimental signature of proximity to a quantum critical point from an ordered side in Ba2CuTeO6.

The material copper pyrimidine dinitrate (Cu-PM) is a quasi-one-dimensional spin system described by the spin-1/2 XXZ Heisenberg antiferromagnet with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. Based on numerical results obtained by the density-matrix renormalization group, exact diagonalization, and accompanying electron spin resonance (ESR) experiments we revisit the spin dynamics of this compound in an applied magnetic field. Our calculations for momentum and frequency-resolved dynamical quantities give direct access to the intensity of the elementary excitations at both zero and finite temperature. This allows us to study the system beyond the low-energy description by the quantum sine-Gordon model. We find a deviation from the Lorentz invariant dispersion for the single-soliton resonance. Furthermore, our calculations only confirm the presence of the strongest boundary bound state previously derived from a boundary sine-Gordon field theory, while composite boundary-bulk excitations have too low intensities to be observable. Upon increasing the temperature, we find a temperature-induced crossover of the soliton and the emergence of new features, such as interbreather transitions. The latter observation is confirmed by our ESR experiments on Cu-PM over a wide range of the applied field.

The temperature dependence of the ESR linewidth is analyzed in the quantum field theory framework, suggesting that the anisotropy of magnetic interactions plays a crucial role, determining the peculiar low-temperature ESR linewidth behavior. In particular, it is argued that the uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (which is allowed on the bonds along the ladder legs) can be the source of this behavior in Cu(C$_8$H$_6$N$_2$)Cl$_2$.

The experiments were performed employing luminescence method and activation spectroscopy techniques - spectrally resolved thermally stimulated luminescence TSL and thermally stimulated exoelectron emission. To discriminate radiation-induced processes in the bulk and at the surface the samples were probed in depth by varying electron energy. Desorption of excited N2* (C3Πu) molecule was detected for the first time. The mechanism of this phenomenon based on recombination of electron with intrinsic charged center N4+ was proposed. The key role of N3+ center dissociative recombination in generation of N radicals is suggested.

The spin dynamics and magnetic excitations of the slightly distorted triangular s = 3/2 system alpha-CaCr2O4 are investigated by means of Raman spectroscopy and electron spin resonance (ESR) to elucidate its peculiar magnetic properties. Two-magnon excitations in circular RL symmetry show a multi-maximum structure with a dominant spectral weight at low energies. The temperature dependence of the ESR linewidth is described by a critical broadening DeltaHpp(T) ~ (T - T_N)^{-p} with the exponent p = 0.30(3) - 0.38(5) for temperatures above T_N = 42.6 K. The exponent is much smaller than that of other s = 3/2 triangular lattices. This is ascribed to soft roton-like modes, indicative of the instability of a helical 120° phase. As an origin we discuss a complex spin topology formed by four inequivalent nearest neighbor and sizable next-nearest neighbor interactions.

Desorption of vibrationally excited argon molecules Ar2^*(v) from the surface of pre-irradiated solid Ar was observed for the first time. It was shown that desorption of 'hot' Ar2^*(v) molecules is caused by recombination of self-trapped holes with electrons released from traps by visible range photons. The possibility of optical stimulation of the phenomenon is evidenced.
